Taking the World by storm The fashion world may often be the subject of debate and controversy, but one thing you can’t question, is that Kate Moss has earned her place as a British Fashion Icon. Discovered aged 14 by the founder of Storm Model Agency, she has gone on to have a career featuring a who’s who of the fashion world. Words by Lauren John

B

orn in Croydon, Surrey in 1974, Kate Moss was one of the lucky ones who was talent spotted, not on the streets, but in an airport arrivals hall after a family holiday in 1988. This chance encounter with Sarah Dourkas from Storm changed her life, and changed the fashion world. One of her first assignments was a photoshoot for British Magazine The Face, and not long after she had a feature spread and cover in British Vogue, both in the same year. Her impact on the fashion world was immediate, with her look and style leading to work in catwalk shows, photo shoots, and advertising campaigns, working with some of the world’s foremost fashion designers and photographers. Her first big break came from Calvin Klein and since then her CV has gone from strength to strength, including work for the likes of Calvin Klein, Chanel, Burberry, Dior, Donna Karan, and other renowned designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and high street beauty brand Rimmel London. Kate’s effortless style has also attracted attention off the catwalk, which has had a positive impact on sales of anything from Ugg Boots and skinny jeans, to denim cut off shorts. The media have lapped up these off duty shots, and have dubbed her ‘The Queen Of Festival Fashion’. When she’s not on location, visiting Kent where her father-in-Law lives, or at one of her

16  SCENE

homes, Kate is often photographed at music festivals across the UK. She has enjoyed the VIP experience at Glastonbury and the V Festival in Chelmsford, and has often managed to combine her love of music with her work as well. Online biographies list vocal and co-writing credits for bands like Oasis, Babyshambles, and the Lemonheads, and Kate also appeared on Brian Ferry’s Olympia album cover. Her modelling career has also taken her on to the small screen, where she took the female lead in music videos with The White Stripes (I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself), and a small role in Elton John’s video for ‘Something About The Way You Look Tonight’. Although she was very much in the background for that video, you won’t miss her latest appearance, as she steals the spotlight from George Michael in the video for new single ‘White Light’ which was showcased online last month. It’s easy to see that being a fashion icon isn’t just about modelling on a catwalk or appearing in fashion spreads. Kate Moss has got to the top through making the most of the opportunities that have come her way and carefully choosing a mix of projects, whether they be music video appearances, or special episodes of Black Adder, Absolutely Fabulous, and Little Britain which audiences loved.

SCENE  17

Making full use of her experiences and contacts in the fashion world, she also continued a long association with luggage designer Longchamps, collaborating on a bag collection, and has drawn in the crowds with her fragrance launches. Kate knows her target market and the needs of the high street well, and while she has not always been known as a big high street shopper, she made a success of her partnership with Top Shop. The fashion retailer released collections she designed between 2007-2010, and the newspapers delightedly penned headlines detailing catfights over some of her popular items! If her modelling career and other business ventures combined doesn’t cement her position as a British Fashion Icon, then her position in 2007 as Forbes’ second highest earning model will strengthen the case. There has also been the small matter of a photographic exhibition by sought after fashion photographer Mario Testino, entitled ‘Kate Who?’ in 2010, and a £1.5 million hollow gold sculpture of Kate which appeared in the British Museum after being unveiled by creator Marc Quinn. She has also been immortalised in print in the respected Pirelli Calendar, a publication that has been celebrating the best and most beautiful fashion models for over 40 years. Kate’s appearance in the

18  SCENE

2012 calendar is one of several, add this to the British Fashion Award she won in 2006, and the prestigious CDFA Award for Fashion influence, and you get an insight into her achievements over the past 24 years. Kate Moss is a model in demand, and shows no signs of slowing down. She managed to find time to marry boyfriend Jamie Hince from band The Kills in July 2011, and has just been confirmed as one of the designers of Jockey silks for this year’s Magnolia Cup charity race at Glorious Goodwood. Kate will also make an appearance on coffee tables all over the country, as Rizzoli publish ‘Kate: The Kate Moss Book’, a photographic tribute to her career, in November. Before then however, there is another assignment that will claim her attention. With a worldwide TV audience, and the eyes of the crowd upon her, she will be modelling in what could be called the world’s biggest catwalk show. Kate Moss will join Naomi Campbell, Lily Cole, and other top British Models in a tribute to the best of British Fashion. This will form part of the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and given her status as a fashion icon, it seems only right that she should play her part in the celebrations.

That’s the milestone notched up this year by Webster’s Pen Shop, the family-owned company that specialises in luxury writing instruments and high-quality stationery products. And – to mark the occasion and demonstrate just how much the world can change in 40 years – the firm will shortly be decorating the entire frontage of its very first store in Petts Wood with a timeline of graphics from 1972 to 2012. The colourful window vinyls will illustrate many of the key events during those 40 years for Webster’s, the local area, the UK and the world. From Britain joining the Common Market in 1973 to world population hitting 7 billion in 2011 – via the Thatcher years, Live Aid, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rise of the Internet – the timeline promises to be a fascinating snapshot of the history of the past 40 years.

Instant hit Now a group of six stores across London and the Southeast, Webster’s Pen Shop began when husband-andwife team, Len and Jacqui Webster, opened their first store in Petts Wood in 1972. With the shop being an instant hit with the local community, the couple were able to build on its success, gradually involving other family members in the business as it grew and eventually opening further stores. The Webster’s brand appeared in the Glades shopping centre, Bromley, in 1993 and the Whitgift Centre, Croydon, in 1995. In 1999, the company cut the ribbon on its flagship store at Bluewater, which is managed by the Websters’ daughter, Jo. A shop in Brighton followed in 2004 and, in 2008, the company launched another store at Bluewater in partnership with US pen and accessories supplier, AT Cross. Along the way, the business also grasped the nettle of e-commerce, with its online store – www.websterspenshop.co.uk – going live in 2000 and, over the years, Webster’s has become renowned for its comprehensive ‘Back to School’ range.

company is investing in anniversary window graphics at its five other stores, featuring a specially designed 40-year logo and the slogan, ‘Celebrating 40 years of self expression’. Commented Andrew Webster, Len and Jacqui’s son and Managing Director of the business today: “We’re delighted that our 40-year anniversary coincides with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics, making this a summer of celebration for the whole country. As well as our new store decals, you may also spot our anniversary advertising on buses in London and the Southeast.” Webster’s will also be running a special ‘Super Doodle’ competition in all six stores during August. Sponsored by the leading German fountain pen manufacturer, Lamy, the competition aims to find the best ‘doodle’ and the winners will scoop some great prizes.

Personal service “So much has happened in these past 40 years,” said Andrew Webster, “that the world is very different now to how it was back in 1972. I’m pleased to say, however, that the demand for handcrafted, luxury products has not waned over the years. In fact,” he continued, “our company is weathering the storm of this latest recession remarkably well. I believe that the reason for our continued success is partly due to the quality of the brands we represent – such as Parker, Sheaffer, Waterman, Filofax, Cross, Lamy and Mont Blanc, to name but a few – but also to the level of personal service that we provide. People know that they can trust us to recommend the right product, retail it at a competitive price and provide any after-sales service that they might need.”

The Dukan Diet

Dr. Dukan’s guide to a healthier you With its ‘eat as much as you like’ promise and extensive online community, it is no wonder that the Dukan diet is France’s most popular and renowned diet, and is quickly becoming that of the UK’s too. Currently celebrating its second birthday in the UK, DukanDiet.co.uk is the interactive home of all things Dukan and, with over one million Dukan Diet books sold nationally, Dukan is a force to be reckoned with.

T

hrust into the world of nutrition when he was working as a GP in Paris, Dr Pierre was asked to solve a patient’s weight-loss after years of failure “‘Please doc, give me a diet, you can scrap anything you want but not the meat!’ So I said ‘eat meat, lean meat, as much as you want, drink water and return to me!’” Suffice to say the patient’s weightloss was phenomenal and so, 42 years of research later, the Dukan diet was born. The diet plan comprises of four phases: Attack; Cruise; Consolidation and Permanent Stabilization. The Attack phase consists of pure protein for a limited amount of time and works as a full-on kick-start into

32  SCENE

the diet, whilst the Cruise stage throws 32 varieties of veg into the mix and the Consolidation prevents the rebound effect suffered in so many diets by gradually reintroducing formerly ‘forbidden’ foods and easing you back into a rounded eating regime. Permanent Stabilization is the final phase and it’s for life, consisting of 3 un-negotiable rules: 1. Consume three tablespoons of oat-bran a day, 2. Take the stairs whenever possible and 3. Have one pure-protein day a week (i.e. the Attack phase). Full details of the diet can be found at dukandiet.co.uk. “The diet is really very, very simple. It is based upon certain protein-rich foods, and of these foods you can

eat as much as you want; that is a very, very important aspect of the diet, because in the mind of people who are obese they are not to calculate or to count, so my diet gives them freedom, they can make choices. And it’s all natural; meat, fish, seafood – they are natural foods and they form the structure of the diet, the plan.” All sounding pretty delectable so far, right? However, like most diets which receive an unprecedented amount of praise, it is not without its controversy. The high protein element of the diet has caused minor furore in the health world because of its link to heart and kidney problems, though Dukan is adamant to set the record straight: “I say that my diet is the healthiest in the world because too much sugar, fat and carbs cause heart attack but protein goes nowhere. We lived 190,000 years without carbs and without sugar so our body is not meant to have too much fat or carbs, so my diet is natural. There is no risk involved! The only risk, the biggest risk, is to be obese” – and with predictions that over half the UK population will be obese by 2030, Dr Dukan is discussing a very real risk. Despite controversies over its content, the diet was an overnight sensation in France before titillating the tastebuds of hopeful weight-loss inhabitants of Spain and Italy, though Dr Pierre was uncertain as to how it would take off in the UK, “I was afraid with English and the Americans because we have different ways of eating but I’ve noticed that the English are very disciplined – better than I imagined, so I am very glad because that opened a new way of communicating with people living in the commonwealth.” Communication; another essential in the make-up of the Dukan diet. Both a google-search and Dr. Dukan himself will symphoniously agree that the success of the diet lies just as much within its chuffed legion of followers as much as within the science behind it: “In France we have something like nearly 600 blogs, websites, forums, and they are full of the community exchanging recipes! And on our official website we have about 67 million page-views a year because people spend so much time speaking of their life, of their recipes, of their children, of their husbands and their vacations and they all help eachother!” With 19 books to his name, selling over 10 million copies, and ‘Dukan Diet’ being stocked and sold in over 50 countries (“I am very proud of that! And now I am a globetrotter!”), Dr Pierre Dukan is now the most widely read nutritionist in the world. And to whom does he attribute his success? “[my first patient] he was man who changed my life. If I’d never met him then maybe I’d be a neurologist and I would never have written book. Sometimes thing happen in your life and they change your life. He changed my life and now I try and change the lives of people!” For more information on the Dukan Diet or to create your free personal weight-loss plan please visit www.dukandiet.co.uk SCENE  33

“Having a beautiful smile gives you confidence, and this is reason enough to visit Dr”

Ask... Dr Jas

Have you any worries with your teeth or questions about non surgical solutions? Well Dr Jas is here to help with all your problems, all you need to do is ask! Q: I Hate The Amount Of Gum That Shows When I Smile A: Gum reshaping is becoming ever more popular at the moment. Depending on the amount of gum available, it is possible to get a very aesthetically pleasing result with no discomfort and in a relatively short appointment time. Most of the smile design treatments will include some form of gum reshaping as part of the treatment so that a perfect outcome is achieved. Before the treatment starts the gums are made numb so that there is no pain whatsoever. A special piece of equipment is used to reshape the gums and cauterise them at the same time. All that remains is for the gums to heal in their new position. The gums are speedily returned to normal with the aid of hot salt water rinses every few hours for about a week.

After

Q: Can I Have Fixed Teeth Without Waiting Months? A: Yes you can! There is a fantastic way of replacing missing teeth without having to wear a denture while implants heal. Sometimes this treatment is called ‘Same Day Teeth’. The first part of the treatment is a CT scan to enable our Implant Dentist to pin point the exact placement of the implants. This treatment allows implants to be placed on the same day that teeth are removed (six implants on the upper jaw and four on the lower). A temporary bridge is made in the laboratory and fitted to the implants straight away. Once full healing has taken place (about 3 months) a new and permanent bridge is made and fitted. During

the three month healing time care is needed on the temporary bridge and implants, for this reason the patient is asked to follow a special eating regime. After this the permanent teeth are placed and you can carry on with everyday life as normal.

After

3. I Would Love To Have A Full Smile Makeover But I’m Not Sure If My Budget Will Allow This? You don’t have to scrimp on your treatment just to fit it into a tight budget. We offer several finance options that can be tailored to your specific budget. So if you want the treatment that you have always dreamt of, it is now well within your reach. Our finance arrangements are very easy to put into place! There is only one form to fill in and we can usually tell you right away if you qualify for finance. We offer 0% finance. This means that a full smile makeover of say ten porcelain veneers could cost from as little as £151 a month! Or a clear Brace from £49 a month! What Could I Have For A Lower Budget? There are cheaper treatments which can also achieve a fantastic result, these are known as mini makeovers and involve perhaps four veneers and free whitening or cosmetic contouring and whitening, depending on what your desired outcome is.

A clients guide to travellaw

What Thomas Dunton can do for you

Our many areas of expertise include most types of claim brought by holiday clients against tour operators and travel agents. We will consider the latest case law in advising you whether to accept a settlement or to pursue your claim through the court system.

Despite competition, holidays are not cheap and some of us save for many years for that ‘once in a lifetime’ holiday or a special event such as a honeymoon. The most important factor that differentiates a holiday from any other product is that you cannot see it, experience it or inspect it before you buy it. If it all goes wrong you cannot take it back to the shop and exchange it for another one. Therefore, you can only rely on what you are told by a travel agent or what you see from a holiday brochure or over the internet.

What you should do when things go wrong Whatever the problem, it is important to bring it immediately to the tour operator’s notice or report it to the local representative. If you wait until you arrive home before you complain, you could technically be in breach of contract. If your complaint is acknowledged by the representative, obtain proof by getting a copy of the complaint form. Record dates and times and make a 40  SCENE

note of any person (hotel manager, staff and representatives) that you speak to.

Keep evidence of your problem Take photographs or a video. This is crucial if you feel you have a complaint. Retain receipts if you incur unnecessary expense. If you are ill or have an accident, try and obtain medical evidence. If you are too ill, try and get a friend or relative to get this information for you. Make sure you get names of any doctors who treat you and the address of any clinic or hospital.

What you must do when you arrive back in the U.K. You must immediately put your complaint in writing to your tour operator. The booking conditions usually specify a time limitation in which to register your complaint with them. It may be anything from 6-8 weeks from the date that you return to the UK.

Bringing in a claim Generally, if you wish to recover damages under the holiday contract then you can sue the tour operator for breach of contract. It is possible to bring a claim for what is known as “loss of bargain”. This means what you actually received

compared with what you contracted and paid for. In holiday contracts, the law has recognised a claim for loss of enjoyment. This may include anxiety, distress and inconvenience. This is especially important in respect of holidays involving honeymoons and anniversaries.

A fair solution You may also be able to claim out of pocket expenses. For example, the cost of a taxi fare when airport transfers have not been provided. In many situations it is a case of negotiating with your tour operator a level of compensation. Remember though, that a tour operator is a business and it will not pay any more than it has to. If you feel particularly aggrieved and feel that you are getting nowhere, you should have the choice of pursuing your case through the Court system. However, the standard booking conditions may include an “Arbitration Clause” in the contract. It is therefore advisable to always seek legal advice before issuing court proceedings.

Our areas of expertise include: *Damages & compensation for loss of enjoyment & diminution of value of holiday *Brochure misrepresentations *Booking conditions *Breach of Holiday Contract *Overseas Personal Injury Claims *Package Travel Regulations Information in this article is of a general nature and details are prone to change. Wines of the month

by Champion Wines

Whatever the weather there is always a place at home for a bottle or two of wine, so at Champion Wines we have put together a few of our top picks for summer that will go brilliantly with the Roast Rack of Lamb recipe. ALSACE HUGEL GENTIL 2010 - £11.99 Gentil “Hugel” allies the suave, spicy flavour of Gewurztraminer, the body of Pinot Gris, the finesse of Riesling, the grapiness of Muscat and the refreshing character of Sylvaner. The Hugel Gentil is a refreshingly dry on the palate, finishing on an agreeably fruity, spicy and perfumed note, both soft and suave with a wonderful textured mid palate. SPAIN: SALBIDE RIOJA 2009 - £10.99 Salbide Rioja has a pure, concentrated, red-fruit perfume which gives way to a cranberry and raspberry character on the palate. The fruit flavours are supported by a gentle spiciness and subtle tannins from the barrel ageing, as well as a lively acidity, which is characteristic of the region of Rioja Alavesa. SOUTH AFRICA: WARWICK ESTATE PINOTAGE 2010 - £13.99 The Pinotage grape is a uniquely South African variety and is particularly refined and full – bodied when grown on unsterilised ‘bush vines’. The wine displays red berry and liquorice flavours with a spicy backdrop and rich mocha aftertaste. The supple tannins are well balanced insuring a lovely long finish. SCENE  45

Vanquish the competition With Aston Martin’s new creation Aston Martin is today unveiling a stunning new luxury sports car – the Vanquish. Sitting proudly at the pinnacle of the luxury British car maker’s sports car line-up, this breath-taking new super grand tourer represents the zenith of current Aston Martin design and engineering. Vanquish points to an exciting and confident future for the historic brand.

speed, is a triumph of both design and technical ability.

The design represents the latest take on Aston Martin’s iconic visual language. Vanquish unquestionably sees the brand continue its enviable tradition of producing some of the most beautiful sports cars in the world. Styling cues such as the elegant new waist, elongated side strakes and LED rear light blades are derived from the One-77 supercar.

Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “Today’s Vanquish is the ultimate expression of Aston Martin design ethos, engineering innovation and technical ability. It offers luxurious, continentcrossing capability and pure driving excitement without compromise.

Unmistakably an Aston Martin, the design shows a clear and coherent lineage from its heritage while providing an equally clear pointer to the luxury car brand’s vibrant future. Closer inspection reveals details such as the stunning new Aero Duct on the rear boot lid. This elegantly devised passive engineering feature, which counteracts lift at the car’s rear when travelling at 46  SCENE

Performance, presence, style and great British craftsmanship – the new Vanquish has all these traits in abundance.

“Bearing the same name as the iconic original Vanquish that did so much to cement Aston Martin’s reputation as a maker of great GT cars in the modern era, I believe the car unveiled today once again puts this great British brand at the top of its class. “The new Vanquish mixes beautiful design with impressive technology such as the superb new

infotainment system. This is the latest incarnation of everything we know, informed and developed from One-77. It is the ultimate Super Grand Tourer – confident and assured – and is the newest representation of Power, Beauty and Soul.” As happy on the streets of a bustling city as it is carving through the countryside or long distance motorway touring, the Vanquish offers a thoroughbred British luxury sports car that’s also suited to everyday use. Powered by a significantly revised naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 petrol engine mated to the proven Touchtronic 2 six-speed automatic gearbox, the new car offers suitably impressive performance figures. The V12’s power peak of 565 bhp (573 PS) makes it Aston Martin’s most potent production model yet, outmuscled only by the strictly limited edition £1.2m One-77 supercar. The raw statistics speak for themselves: 573 PS at 6,750 rpm, 620 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm, 0-62 mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 183 mph place the Vanquish firmly into supercar territory. Yet the brand’s team of engineers have been working towards economy and emissions improvements, too. The latest engineering methods, innovative

technologies and typically understated classic British design come together to make the muscular new Vanquish a true super GT. For instance, each body panel on the car is constructed from carbon fibre because of its high strength-to-weight ratio and flexibility of form. Meanwhile torsional rigidity is improved by more than 25%. Practical improvements such as a newly designed and significantly more spacious cabin and a boot that, at 368 litres, is more than 60% larger than that of the DBS, ensure the new Vanquish can carry sufficient luggage for even the most ambitious grand tourist. Designed and hand-built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters at Gaydon in Warwickshire the new Vanquish, available as a 2+2 or 2+0, sits atop a broad line-up of world-class sports cars including the exquisite DB9, sporty V8 Vantage and luxurious fourdoor Rapide. Dr Bez said: “The Aston Martin range is stronger now than at any time in our 99-year history. The new Vanquish represents the perfect way to signal the beginning of our centenary celebrations next year.” Priced from £189,995 RRP first deliveries of the new sports car are expected to begin in the UK and Continental Europe late in 2012.
