WHAT DECANTER? Wine is wonderful, but sitting around waiting for it to breathe can be a right pain in the pinots. And that’s why you need Breathable Wine Glasses. These revolutionary crystal glasses aerate wine 30 times faster than regular glasses, so you can enjoy your vino almost immediately. No decanters, feather-spitting small talk or olive fiddling required. Simply pour your wine into a Breathable Wine Glass and in just two to four minutes it will show the same signs of aeration as wine that has been decanted for one to two hours. Amazing! But how does it work? Well apparently each lead-free crystal glass undergoes an innovative oxygenising treatment that…look, it’s all very scientific and yawn-worthy but by Bacchus, it works. £26.49 from Firebox.com 10 SCENE

Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of

the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meetsBritish cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter-before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land. Out 13/01/2012

Trade-in and start 2012 in style and in pocket Simply trade-in any working television – no matter the age, brand or model – and receive a minimum of £1,000 towards BeoVision 7, £700 against BeoVision 10-40 and 10-46, or £400 off BeoVision 10-32. Those who are hoping to enjoy the ultimate viewing experience at the best possible price in 2012 – including 3D – will be able to achieve their new year’s resolution thanks to a superb trade-in promotion from Bang & Olufsen retailers in Bexleyheath, Bromley and Tunbridge Wells. Until January 31st 2012, the long-established Bang & Olufsen showrooms are inviting customers to trade-in any television for superb reductions on selected BeoVision sets. Available in 32”, 40” and 55” screen sizes – the larger sizes in both 2D and 3D, the BeoVision 7 LCD ‘family’ of televisions are a pleasure to watch thanks to patented VisionClear technologies that provide amazing colour and contrast and Automatic Picture Control that continually adjusts picture brightness to compensate for your room’s changing conditions. Larger BeoVision 7 models come with built-in, Blu-ray DVD players, while a DVD player can be specified as an option on the conveniently-sized BeoVision 7-32. At the touch of a button, all BeoVision 7 can be rotated up to 70 degrees on motorised floor stands to provide the perfect viewing angle. A ‘perfect 10’ in every sense, the BeoVision 10 ‘family’ of televisions raises the bar when it comes to fusing eye-catching design with impeccable performance. Amazingly, the Full High Definition LED/LCD television has actually been designed to be hung on a wall with other artwork and its ability to blend into any environment is enhanced through its interchangeable speaker grille being available in a variety of colours, its

slender frame finished in silver or black finishes, and an ultra-slim depth of only 6cm. Of course, the beauty of BeoVision 10 is far from skin deep and customers will find it really is a ‘natural’ choice due to its use of 200/240Hz technology for superior picture performance and motion compensation for the life-like display of sporting and fast-moving action sequences. Viewers who choose BeoVision 10 in its 32”, 40” and 46” sizes also enjoy phenomenal sound from an active two-way stereo loudspeaker and edge-lit LED backlighting to optimise contrast. Paul Blake, Dealer Principal, believes that the trade-in opportunities could not have come at a better time. “Many people want to start the new year afresh and these offers mean that they can apply the old adage of “out with the old and in with the new” to their television and also be safe in the knowledge that they’re upgrading their audio-visual experience at the best possible price, said Paul. “What’s more, in many cases we can add to the increased affordability of these sets with the availability of 0 per cent interest-free credit, while there is also the possibility of a free home demonstration before purchase too.” For further information on the trade-in offers, or any other products in the comprehensive Bang & Olufsen range, please call the retailers below.

HAVE YOU SUFFERED AN Injury? DO YOU HAVE A CLAIM?

FURTHER STEPS TO TAKE

f you have suffered an injury, perhaps a road traffic accident, an accident at work or elsewhere, or if you have a work related disease, you may have a claim. Generally to pursue a claim the injury must have occurred within the last three years. However, there are exceptions, for instances for children or where the consequences were not immediately apparent.

• Ask any witnesses to write down their version of events straightaway whilst the incident is still fresh in their minds. • Keep receipts for any expenditure resulting from injury, including all prescriptions. Record details of any mileage for travel by vehicle to the doctor, or hospital or elsewhere. • Keep a note of any loss of earnings and any state benefits received. • Keep a note of people caring for you, especially those needed to take time off work to do so. Record the number of hours and days and if possible their pay rate. • Keep a note of any activities or work you are unable to do as a result of the injury. • Keep a note of your feelings and symptoms and how the injury progresses.

I

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO FIRST • Obtain the details of the other party, the potential defendant, including their address. • Photograph the scene of the accident if it is a public place, particularly any important features, for example defects. • Draw a sketch plan of the scene of the accident marking the accident spot and any direction of travel. • For a tripping accident, measure the height of the step and photograph it. Include another item to demonstrate scale, e.g. a ruler. • Obtain a copy of any accident report book. • Obtain a copy of the police report if it was a motor accident. • If you were assaulted, ensure that you have immediately reported the matter to the police and obtained a crime number. • Write down your own statement while it is still fresh in your mind. • Write down the names and address of any witnesses. • Give details of any injury sustained, the treatment received and your current condition. • Provide details of your GP and any hospital attended. Photograph your injuries.

ARE YOU COVERED BY INSURANCE? • Gather together any motor, household and legal expenses insurance policies you have. • If you were the passenger in a motor accident ask the driver for a copy of his/her motor insurance policy, if possible. We will need to check the policies to see if you have the benefit of any legal expenses insurance cover. • Providing this information will help us to progress your case as quickly as possible.

YOUR FUNDING OPTIONS If you wish to go ahead, we will discuss funding with you. This can be on a private basis or under legal expenses insurance that you may already have.

Public funding (Legal Aid) may be available, or you might use a conditional fee agreement with conditional fee insurance (“no win, no fee”). Please speak to us about the possible funding options that may be available to you

Dancing on Words by Louise Prew

2012 sees the return of hit TV show, Dancing on Ice, to our screens this Spring. There are big changes to the show but its inspiration remains stoic, that of Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, Skating stars. Scene takes a look at the phenomenon that is Torvill and Dean and their dramatic rise to fame. 16  SCENE

Let me take you back to a bygone era, when sweaty wrestling ‘twixt beefy men in leotards, Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy, ruled the airwaves on Saturday afternoons. Mum cooked dinner, while Dad watched telly and the kids played on BMX’s outside. When it was time to come in, we skidded our bikes to a halt and came in to watch. But on this Saturday, us girls (myself, my mum and my two sisters) were in for a treat. In 1984, one year prior to sitting around the telly transfixed by Madonna on Live Aid, we were treated to the Winter Olympics and the performance of a lifetime from Torvill and Dean. A show-stopper that would have us awestruck and make them stars. As I write this, I have Ravel’s Bolero building its musical momentum through the Bose for inspiration, but it’s not needed. The score evokes a memory so powerful, I have shivers all down my spine. The TV event is crystal clear, depicting a stunning love story told through swan-like graceful skating and, it goes like this..... Jayne and Christopher take to the ice in their matching chiffon dip-dye lilac. Chris stands blonde and statuesque, all Romantic and billowing sleeves while Jayne shimmers under his manliness, Medievally bodiced and full of longing. They kneel on the ice, entwined as they begin the dance of tortured lovers who cannot be together. The music is in one movement, expertly cut down to four minutes and eighteen seconds for their tragic love tale. The instruments build slowly with delicate momentum which in turn builds our own anticipation between the two love birds. Torvill and Dean skate their hearts out as they axel spin and catch foot camel position to perfection. The whole time, Jayne’s perfect wedge never falters. Their faces meanwhile, are snapshots of desire, torture and undying love and sorrow. Did we secretly want them to be passionate lovers in real life? Yes, yes yes!

SCENE 17

The music builds its intensity and triumphs to a crescendo-ous finale. The pair swoon to the ground tragically. It’s at this moment that every family across Great Britain is up on their slipper-clad feet clapping and whooping in admiration for the nation’s new heros and Torvill and Dean’s hand-clasping is snapped for all the papers all over the world, depicting the realisation that they’d smashed it. For that performance they were the highest scoring figure skaters ever, receiving twelve perfect 6.0’s and six 5.9’s. Kudos. The dynamic duo were now professionals and became deserved millionaires overnight. T&D, as I would like to refer to them here on in, have actually practised together to date for a staggering thirty-six years and had huge accolades and success all over the world. But, in 1998, they hung up their skates and, in Jayne’s case, she binned the fleshcoloured tights only to bring it all out again to tour for the last time with the show, ‘Ice Adventures’ and, later, ‘Stars on Ice’. Dean moved to Colorado with his then wife and two sons and Torvill moved to Surrey with her husband, son and daughter. A 23-year long partnership that had made them huge stars was laid to rest. In 2009, the couple were enticed to come out of retirement and head up, new show, Dancing on Ice and the rest is history. For those like me, who have an admiration for the skaters but have never watched the show, its the same as Strictly but on ice whereby T&D mentor the stars, providing encouragement, creative input and artistic advice to help them perform to the best of their ability. Fan or not, the show is watched by millions and the dedication and talent needed to skate gracefully, energetically

and competitively is second to none. each week the competition level is upped and, like Strictly, if the celebrity is not cutting it on the ice, they are voted off. The finalists are left to perform T&D’s 1984, Gold medal performance of Bolero and the winner is chosen by the public. It’s not all about DOI though. Recently T&D have been turning their talents toward the Rhythmic Gymnasts, a group of teenage girls testing for competition in the London 2012 Olympic Games. It’s a sport that’s not been accepted by the games before but if successful will go through to competition. The skill needed is not dissimilar to what’s required in skating. In other words, competitors need to connect with the public and, like actors, they need to make eye contact, smile, hold their head high and believe in their performance to win. Christopher Dean says, “This is the same as our sport, skating. It’s subjective and what one person sees or likes, the other might not. What you have to do is win over the majority, and the judges”. This year is looking pretty smokin’...with the likes of 90’s ‘itgirl’ actress, Sadie Frost, Sugababe, heidi Range and eightie’s Goonie dweeb, Corey Feldman, all vying for the trophy. And, now say-it-as-it-is Jason Gardiner has been replaced by Pineapple’s Louie Spence and baby Spice, emma Bunton, relieved by former skating champion Katarina Witt, we can expect some fresh and lively input. With Christine Brinkley (everyone’s favourite WAG) co-presenting alongside Philip Schofield this year, there is every hope that David Beckham could be tempted to star in the series. Beckham has received the offer and is considering. We will just have to wait and see. Bring it on ITV!

Cleansing

NEW YEAR Too many mince pies, too much mulled wine - we all like to overindulge during the festive season… January is the time to be tired, bloated and have skin the colour of bread sauce!

With the New Year already upon us, thoughts of a New You and the endless detox and fad products being advertised can leave you confused and overwhelmed. Just when you thought there was no hope, Radiance and Oolong have joined forces to not only make your cleansing experience an easy one, but dare I say it, an enjoyable one! What started out as a business relationship has now turned into a wonderful friendship, which makes their collaboration even more special and the outcome even more effective. Editor’s diary I selected the Radiance 3 day Signature Cleanse and a Bespoke yoga and Thai massage package from Oolong. I was able to fit the cleanse around my working life, which was fantastic! Abi, the founder of Oolong, suggested I did the yoga classes in the morning to complement my cleanse. So my day began with an invigorating juice, followed by an hour of yoga. My 20 SCENE

juices were delivered to my home for the whole cleanse, along with supplements and lots of information to keep me on track. Day one seemed to fly by. No hunger, no headaches and feeling on top form from my yoga session. Day two was slightly more challenging. I woke up feeling a bit tired and a headache developed during the day. Clare, co-founder of Radiance, confirmed this was normal and suggested I kept up my fluid intake and that the Thai massage that evening would help to ease the symptoms. On my final day I woke up with no headache and felt more energetic and excited for my final yoga session with Oolong.

The day after my detox I had the recommended breakfast of a fresh fruit salad and one of Oolong’s specialist green teas. Delicious. How you eat after the cleanse is really important, and helps you maintain the benefits. I really felt amazing, had dropped a couple of pounds and my skin looked clearer and brighter. Not to mention that my core stomach muscles felt stronger from the yoga sessions. Overall it was a fantastic experience and has changed the way I look at food and exercise. I’m now signed up for yoga classes with Abi and will be doing another cleanse later in the year.

I’m certain these are real solutions rather than the normal resolutions. Top tips for boosting your cleanse from Abi and Clare: • Do your cleanse and classes with a friend. It helps keep you motivated. • Start your day with hot water and a slice of lemon – it kick starts your system. • Dry skin body brushing is stimulating and gets rid of dead skin. Or if you fancy a treat try the Peach Buff treatment with Oolong. • Herbal teas are great throughout your cleanse. Clare: “we are delighted to collaborate with Oolong and build a programme that will really help clients get phenomenal results”. To discuss your options for a combined Oolong and Radiance programme please contact either Oolong on 07951 101 049 or Radiance on 07780 001 432. It’s January and, if you, like me have indulged over the festive period with mince pie coffee mornings, hot chocolate brunches, fast-food stops with the children, a glass of red here and a glass of champagne there. That’s before the turkey and those crispy, devilish potatoes have even been devoured. You will relate to the postChristmas bloat. The face is rounder, the hips are wider, the arms are tight in the dresses, underwear feels uncomfortable and zips that wont budge. Deep sigh...what to do? I dislike gyms, I’ve lost the will to run especially when its 1 degree outside. I need to do something invigorating and I need to

22 SCENE

do it with someone who understands my fitness needs and goals. Most of all I want to have fun, lose weight and get back on track with like-minded people. Time to call Penelope Fitstar. Louise Whyte, founder of the company completely empathises with women’s body issues which is why she set up the company. You’ll be inspired... Louise, how did Penelope Fitstar come about? I’ve always been into fitness but found a lot of exercise on offer is very masculine and technical which can be off-putting to some women. I wanted a company that provides fitness specifically for women. All of our classes / personal training sessions are designed to work all those bits women have trouble with i.e. upper arms, bra overhang, muffin tops, bloated tummies etc. We are all approachable, friendly trainers that understand and empathise with our clients. We’re also

the only company in the area to have all trainers qualified to teach pregnant and post natal mums. And, its really taken off hasn’t it? We have about 500 plus clients. Our clients are all lovely and once on board tend to stick with us. What does the company offer the client? We have 9 trainers and offer personal training, running classes, bootcamps, fitbox, pregnancy and post natal training and our new dance based Stiletto class. What’s the USP of Penelope Fitstar? Our USP is our pink, retro branding and the fact we are the only fitness company for women with all women trainers in the area. Our classes

are unique too, i.e. our Bootox weekend (diet and assault courses in the woods), our Fitbox Classes (combination of kickboxing and boxing with cardio drills) and our latest launch Stiletto a dance class to tone your legs and core and teach you how to move in style in your high heels. This is a great feel good class. We are constantly bringing new workouts to our client base. Our strapline is “sophisticated fitness for women” and that’s exactly what we try to bring, a bit of glam and lipgloss to compliment the hardwork! Does it work? Our clients can and do get results from our packages. We are really committed to our clients and don’t just teach classes and switch off, we send a weekly motivating newsletter full of tips and also offer dietary advice to ensure they get the most from their sessions. Personal training is very popular too as there is no driving to and from the gym, we turn up and train you for 1 hour so it is a great time saver. What are the benefits of outdoor exercise? The benefits of running, particularly outside are, Uneven terrain works your core, you burn more calories

than on a treadmill, you top up your vitamin D levels, vital for mental wellbeing, we have great camaraderie in our classes, we constantly change the format of the classes to challenge our clients, our classes are very sociable and research has proven you are more likely to stick to exercise if there is a social element, we cater for all levels and always give easier/ harder options What if one falls off of the wagon?! We have a realistic approach to training – we are firm believers that you need to train regularly and correctly to achieve results but likewise you have to have a life and we all enjoy eating out and socialising too.

SPA FROM THE MADDING

30  SCENE

IT’S SOMETIMES GOOD TO STRAY OFF THE WELL-BEATEN TRACK, NOT FOLLOW THE CROWD AND FIND AN ISLAND FEW ENGLISH VISITORS HAVE EVER SEEN NOR BEEN. SCENE MAGAZINE DID JUST THAT AND DISCOVERED A BEAUTIFUL TOURIST FREE ZONE IN THE NORTH WEST OF SPAIN WITHIN GALICIA, CALLED ISLA DE LA TOJA.

Words by Jo Fraser

F

orget about places overrun with tourists and the typical trappings of a Mediterranean resort. Forget too, a Spain where everyone speaks English and the bloke next to you comes from Birmingham or Bournemouth. This is the REAL Spain and even to the Spanish, The Galician region is something different. Galicia borders Portugal to the south and is in the epicentre of the Spanish fishing and seafood industries. The Galician’s have their own language and culture which impacts what they eat and drink; it’s Spanish but with a twist.

Connected to Galicia on the North West of the Spanish mainland by a 19th Century bridge lays the tiny island of Isla de la Toja, pronounced “tocka” or to the locals “A Toxa” (“tosha”). The island is known throughout Spain for its healthy climate, and spas have been created here for centuries – the finest is probably to be found at the Hesperia Isla de la Toja hotel where SCENE Magazine had the pleasure of staying. With just 104 bedrooms, the Hesperia Isla de la Toja is a modern, comfortable and sophisticated spa hotel. Staff are typically laid back, friendly and

efficient and the rooms large and airy, many with sea views. The hotel features three swimming pools, an endless array of spa treatments and is the ideal destination for relaxation and rejuvenation. Their exclusive Spa and Thermal Club offers an expansive indoor and outdoor facility for health and wellness with panoramic sea views, a state-of the-art fitness centre and a full menu of spa services. The Swiss-style spa offers a vast range of treatments including mineral baths, massages, wraps and aromatherapy treatments. The famous island spring water is used in their mineral baths,

SCENE 31

showers and the numerous pools and Jacuzzis, creating a wholly unique and ultra-luxurious experience for the discerning traveller. The Hesperia Isla de la Toja hotel combines gourmet dining on the finest local produce with its fantastic spa and wellness centre with restaurants to suit every whim. El Acueducto offers a gastronomic tour of Galician cuisine – much of it based on combinations of rice and seafood. La Lanzada offers a simpler menu while still retaining the themes of local produce and seafood with a fixed price buffet-style. An inviting bar across from the hotel offers locally produced wine, beer and tapas in a more casual setting. It’s not just the hotel that should make you want to visit Isla de la Toja though. The island itself is a gem. There are golf courses, a marina, tennis facilities and even a casino opposite the hotel which opens late. The most famous symbol of the island is the must-see tiny chapel, built in the 12th Century and covered entirely with scallop shells. Opposite this is a small soap museum and shop which harnesses the mineral rich 32  SCENE

waters of the island. Slightly further afield from Isla de la Toja are local towns and villages well worth exploring, including the quaint fishing town of Combarro and the old town of Cambados. As well as seafood, wine features strongly in this region; the local Rias Baixas region is renowned for its white wines made from the Albariño grape variety. Visitors can take a tour of the nearby vineyards and indulge in one of the many wine-tastings on offer. Given its location, the transfer from airports is a little longer than in the tourist hot spots – but Isla de la Toja offers a very different experience for the traveller determined to find something a little more rewarding and a little more authentic from the norm. Low-cost Spanish airline Vueling flies from London Heathrow to La Coruna and transfers are available to Isla de la Toja. SCENE Magazine would like to thank Mason Williams PR and all at the Hesperia de la Toja hotel for their kind hospitality during our stay. For more details please visit www.hesperia.com

DESIGN WITH SLIMLINE WINDOWS For 16 years, The Heritage Window Company has manufactured and installed its Benenden™ Slimline Aluminium windows and doors all over the South of England. Originally conceived as a replacement alternative to traditional steel windows, Benenden™ are increasingly specified by architects for new-build projects because of their attractive sightlines, superior thermal efficiency and low maintenance characteristics. Strong aluminium frames combined with a tough powder coated finish ensure they will not warp, discolour or ever need repainting. The frames fit into timber sub-frames or direct to brick or stone and are available in a range of colours, styles and glazing options. VISUAL MASTERPIECE Sergei Tchoban has now designed a bathroom range for Duravit: Esplanade – luxurious, spacious and visually impressive. Tchoban deliberately plays with the splendour of times gone by paired with a touch of irony. So it is no coincidence that the floorstanding toilet resembles an ancient chair, the washbasin a chest of drawers and the bathtub a chaise longue. The Esplanade furniture is available in two completely different styles. Either in exquisite silk or comfortable oak wood panelling, blending the bathroom beautifully with the living area. ALL FIRED UP I f there is one object every home should have, it’s a fireplace. No longer is the fire there just as a source of heat; it’s a statement piece, a thing of beauty to complete a home. It’s easy to forget such an everyday object but you are reminded when you visit a friend’s home after a refurb and fireplace envy kicks in! You wonder how you ever lived without one before! How can a fireplace create such a focal point and look so elegant? It transforms a room completely! Fireplaces and their surrounds have moved on hugely and it’s worth every penny to investigate revamping your own tired space or sad little fire into something special. Welcome then to The Kent Fireplace Company, an independently owned fireplace and stove retailer, established for over 30 years in the heart of Shortlands. Whether moving to a new home, beginning a refurbishment or new to the idea of a fireplace, it can be a minefield. What to buy? What style? Where will it go,? Gas, electric or a real fire? Do I even have a chimney?! When choosing such a central focus for your home, it’s essential to get every detail down to a fine art. For that you need sterling advice, from individuals who tailor your needs and fine tune your choice for your home’s personality. It’s easy to walk into a studio and say, ‘I want that one’ but there are many 44 SCENE

questions you need to ask yourself first, such as, do you want a fireplace for decorative purposes or do you want to heat your home?

The Kent Fireplace Company is run by friendly and welcoming sales staff with a keen knowledge from choice to installation. Did you know that London and its suburbs are smoke-controlled areas, so having a log burning fire requires very specific Smoke Control Exempt appliances that have DEFRA approval in order to burn efficiently and safely? (potentially avoiding a £1000 fine!)

Recently refurbished, the shop boasts an extended showroom with exquisite show-home fireplaces in every shape and size, affordable and high-end. On offer are minimalist, contemporary designs and stunning nothing-therebut-the-flames pieces in addition to traditional, classic styles. There is a vast array of choice and the design concept is inspiring even to a novice. To have a fireplace nowadays is a savvy option, and with energy bills rising, rethinking your fireplace could be the wisest decision you make. Most of the glassfronted fireplaces are in excess of 70% energy-efficient and can heat your home without the need of heating. And, with more people choosing to stay in, you can see why investing in a fireplace has never been more popular.

The showroom further reminds what’s on offer. As well as cast iron baskets, there are traditional log burning fires, marble and limestone surrounds and old fashioned Victorian chimney fires, which wouldn’t look out of place in a big country kitchen. But for this reviewer, the bespoke, made to measure pieces are the most interesting. It’s amazing to see how a fireplace can transform a space so impressively. If you want to place a plasma mega TV above your fireplace, they will steer you towards the fires you can do this with. If you want something unusual like a corner wall fire, no problem. They do the super high-tech work to traditional and classic designs. They have just opened their warehouse a few minutes away from the showroom, so if you need an off-the-peg fireplace quickly, there are an additional 40 fireplaces and stoves to choose from. With a knowledgeable, experienced and dedicated team of Gas Safe and Hetas fitters on hand for your every need, The Kent Fireplace Company offers the very best in choice, service and value for money. Go on, take a look, the snow’s on it’s way you know! For more information on Kent Fireplace Company call 0208 466 5910 or visit www.kentfireplace.co.uk

DELIGHTFUL Dining at Plaza Words by Louise Prew

PLAZA IS A PLUSH RESTAURANT NESTLED AT THE TOP END OF LOCKSBOTTOM PARADE, A FINE DINING HAVEN FILLED WITH WARMTH, CHARACTER AND STYLE. THE CHEF BEHIND THIS EATERY OF EXCELLENCE IS CYPRIOT-BORN AND BRED, NICK CONSTANTINE, A NO-MESS OR NO-ROOM-FOR-MISTAKES KINDA GUY WITH A BIG HEART FOR FOOD AND A DEEP RESPECT FOR HIS CUSTOMERS. SCENE CATCHES THE BUSY MAN BEFORE HE HEADS OFF TO BRAZIL....

IN THIS ERA OF PEOPLE EATING OUT LESS DUE TO THE RECESSION, WHY SHOULD DINERS CHOOSE PLAZA? JUST LOOK AT THE SUCCESS WE HAVE HAD SINCE WE CHANGED THE CONCEPT....THERE IS GREAT FOOD HERE AND A WARM AMBIENCE. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT FOOD AND SERVICE AND WE DON’T CUT CORNERS. OUR CUSTOMERS ARE ALWAYS VERY COMPLIMENTARY AND WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON THAT.

Tell us about Plaza Well, we are situated in a very affluent area with Farnborough Park and Keston Park on our doorstep, so we have a lot of local, friendly residents coming in regularly. Plaza is a buzzy, lively place serving good food always. What dining experience can the customer expect? Fine Mediterranean cuisine with influences from Italy, Greece and Cyprus. We create our own highquality dishes with flavour and influence from all of those countries. Wasn’t Plaza a different concept before? We used to be like Cafe Plaza in Petts Wood as we are affiliated with them but their fayre is more daytime, whereas we are fine dining. That is when the restaurant really took off. The locals needed an intimate, smaller fine dining place to eat and socialise.

SCENE 51

What is the most popular dish on the menu? The steaks! I think, because the meat is of a very high quality and is well-aged. Everything is fresh daily for full flavour. The skate wing is also very popular. Every care is taken before going to the grill. The skill is in the preparation. What inspires you about cooking? The fresh ingredients. The possibilities and the freedom to work with those ingredients is never-ending. So what are your favourite ingredients to work with? I love seasonal produce, fresh herbs and vegetables and whatever good meat is in season. Asparagus is lovely to work with and artichokes - real flavours and textures of the Mediterranean. I source all of the meat and fish myself. I am very fussy about it! Gurnard is probably my favourite fish, its funny and beautiful at the

concept and Plaza at Locksbottom. We have plans for Cafe Plaza, watch this space!

What is your favourite dish on the menu? For a starter, the seared scallops with panchetta and pea puree - an Italian influence and delicious. And, for the main, braised shoulder of lamb, it’s slow-cooked for three hours in red wine, herbs and tomatoes...exquisite. Why did you choose to become a chef? In the early stages, my brothers and I, we would come home from school and we would have to source our own food. Everybody had to work so we had to look after ourselves. We were always in the kitchen messing around. It inspired me to go to catering school when I was 14. I was further inspired working in 5* hotels practising as a chef. So, if you weren’t a chef, what would you be? Probably an interior designer. When you prepare food, you have to have a ‘design’ eye... So anything in that ilk, anything that requires a good eye, excellence, a strong interest. (I quip, is that why he has such savvy fashion sense?!)

same time and very, very tasty. I am looking for new ingredients all the time, I’m experimental. Tell us about your chef time line. I started cooking in Cyprus when I was 15. I came to the UK in 1980 to study at Westminster College. In 1985 I opened my first concept restaurant called Ferrari’s (Ferrari’s is now a large chain of restaurants in the Kent area). We sold those off after we felt we had gone as far as we could. Then we opened Cafe Plaza, the all day dining 52 SCENE

weekend we have a special menu and day-to-day is a set menu, always good, tasty, well-prepared food.

What is your management style like in the kitchen? We are a very small team and my chefs know me very well and they know what is expected. We have four chefs and one is my son who has been cooking for seven years. We talk, we discuss our dishes and they know what I want. I’m serious about food so I am firm. We have an open kitchen and all of the customers can see us so we work hard.

How often do you revise your menu? The a la carte menu is seasonal so three to four times a year. Every

What do you do in your spare time Nick? I work six days a week and so I like to spend time on the floor with our guests, getting to know them and persuading them to try something new - that’s important to me. In my spare time, I’m always looking for new Visit Plaza, 386 Crofton Road, Locksbottom, Kent, BR6 8NN Tel: 01689 859000 Visit Plaza online at www.plazalocksbottom.co.uk influences, new flavours. I like to go to Italy, to all the different regions to seek out new wines and produce. I like to learn innovative ways of doing things as each region has their own style of cooking and adding flavour. In this era of people eating out less due to the recession, why should diners choose Plaza? Just look at the success we have had since we changed the concept.... There is great food here and a warm ambience. We are passionate about food and service and we don’t cut corners. Our customers are always very complimentary and we pride ourselves on that.

EATING HEALTHY? IT’S A WHAT YOU’LL LOVE ABOUT THIS PLACE IS THE HOME-COOKED VIBE YOU GET FROM THE GET-GO AND THE FACT THAT THE CHEF IS SERVING YOU IS A TREAT TO BOOT. THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE FOOD IS SIMPLE: EVERYTHING IS FRESH AND COOKED ON THE DAY AND EASILY DIGESTIBLE, SO NO UNCOMFORTABLE FULL FEELING.

Words by Louise Prew, Photography by David Itzcovitz

You’ll get a good feeling when you step across the threshold of this place. Breeze yoga, is set on Albemarle Road in Beckenham and has a large cafe front of house which serves humble, healthy and delicious food for the soul. This bright, open space has a modern kitchen kind of feel and, flooded with natural daylight, sets you up for the rest of the day with its chilled and calm atmosphere. Big open ceilings reveal the workings of the building, providing a gym-like vibe, but there are no loud TV’s here to spoil your food. The clientele are a mixture of shoppers stopping in for a fix of Illy coffee or customers coming out from their yoga class, looking for nourishment and a bit of R&R. It’s the perfect setting to read the broadsheet, or take some time with your favourite book, while the wind blows outside and the rain pitter-patters down. What you’ll love about this place is the home-cooked vibe you get from the get-go and the fact that the chef is serving you is a treat to boot. The philosophy behind the food is simple: Everything is fresh and cooked on the day and easily digestible, so no uncomfortable full feeling. There are a delicious range of coffees and teas, as well as the celebrity juice that Gwyneth and Madonna 54 SCENE

rave about: the classic Vita Coco Water made from 100% coconut. Essentially vegetarian food, there is nothing here not to like or satisfy hungry tummies. From mouthwatering freshly squeezed juices to wraps and hearty soups, there is a smorgasbord of things to try. Nisha, a yoga practitioner at Breeze was the lovely lady who cooked and offered her specials today and we were in seventh heaven listening to all of the ingredients. I opted for the Cream of Celeriac Soup which came served with hunks of glorious fresh artisan bread with a satisfyingly seedy crunchy crust. Is there anything more heartwarming than a thick flavoursome soup served in cute Le Creusset pots for one on a rustic breadboard? That is my idea of winter and it reminds me of my mum and her Scottish soups. I cannot recommend this choice enough, it was incredibly delicious infused with garlic, onion and that familiar beautiful taste of celeriac. In these cold months ahead, soup is a winner. We also had on the table a juice of the day called the Breezy Cold Buster, served in a generous pint glass. This health-enhancing glass of sweet nectar had apples, kiwi and pineapple to stave off winter SCENE 55

snuffles and sneezes. We also went for the special of the day which was a beautifully presented Spicy Veggie Mince Wrap with Salsa and Sour Cream which, after being slowly and appreciatively devoured (in keeping with the calm atmosphere of the venue), was remarked upon as, “absolutely delicious, you would never know it was vegetarian!” In that tempting fridge were big round strawberry cheesecakes (baked by Celine) and deep brown hued chocolate cakes and massive cookies and cup cakes, but, alas, we were filled comfortably and did not feel the need for a sweet. The cafe is a place you can come to be quiet and think while wiling away half and hour or so to cogitate the day. For me, it was the perfect setting to read about the classes they hold here. It’s a comfortable, inviting destination for a spot of breakfast or a tasty sandwich. “hearty Porridge” Doesn’t that sound just wonderful? As I write this, I’m sat eating spicy pumpkin soup from a supermarket and it’s not a patch on what I had yesterday and my spotty mug does not compare to such delightful crockery at Breeze. Thank you Toni and Nisha and all of the team at Breeze for being so friendly and lovely, we will come again.

CHAMPIONWines I think its safe to say that these intimate teams of Chislehurst dwellers were very happy to be sat in Champion Wines on such a fine evening in late September. This is because Penny Champion, founder and owner of Champion Wines held another one of her exquisite wine tasting events at her shop. Penny, an Aussie who has been living in England with her husband and children for a number of years now has one of those lovely laid back personalities that make her delightfully approachable plus you could just sit and listen to that Aussie, Cockney twang all day.

The shop itself is one of pure quality, all rustic floors complete with lolling pooch and wooden shelves housing over 400 wines from around the world. What’s great about the shop is that you can see the wines easily and the shop is welcoming to everyone. Tonight is Australian Wine Tasting night. Penny’s customers sit jovially around the big wooden farmers table and munch on water biscuits, cheeses and olives while Penny gets stuck into introducing what the night is all about. Australia first planted grape vine over 200 years ago, but its fair to say that the country has only recently come into its own over the past 40 odd years and even more recently when Jacobs Creek was launched into the UK market in the early 1990’s. Before that in the early 1900’s, Australia was one of the largest exporters of 58 SCENE

its fortified wines in the UK market. Now, the wines are becoming more sophisticated and refined and mirroring the old world such as France. With a 160 different grape varieties being grown, Australia is not just famous for its Chardonnay and Shiraz with many other grape varieties coming into the UK such as Verdelho, Semillon, Vigonier, Grenache. It has become the fourth largest exporter of wine in the world.

At the table, I’m taking my direction from everyone else. There are some novices and some aficionados and though I’m in the former category, I very soon get the hang of it. One by one, Penny introduces 8 wines to the table like old friends she’s either missed terribly or fallen in and out of love with over the years. She’s such a straight talker that there is not one hint of inferiority from anyone who perhaps guzzles wine usually other than savouring it thoughtfully. Its safe to say though that everybody is here to learn and while there is a very light-hearted atmosphere in the room, people are really enjoying finding the ‘nose’ of the wine, or seeing the ‘legs’ appear on the glass of a Cabernet. Now, if you want to know what all of that malarkey means, you are going to have to book a ticket to one of Penny’s events. Suffice to say, I absolutely loved holding my glass up to my sheet of white paper to see the colour strength and rim of liquid forming

against the glass. I also loved hearing all the wonderful descriptions these wine connoisseurs use to describe the fragrance of a wine, such as herbal, elegance, finesse, oaky, the length of a wine, the spice, the pepper.... My favourite quotes from Penny tonight included her description of an early Australian Chardonnay as being the Dolly Parton of a wine “all up front” compared to the unoaked Omrah Chardonnay. Or what about, “This wine has a wonderful body made up of eucalyptus, cassis and blackcurranty flavours...its like a delicious meal in your mouth”. Superb descriptions! Penny is such a fountain of knowledge; you want to learn from her. She holds many wine tasting events but even if you just want to come in for a chat about a wine, she’ll help you decipher your grapes and your regions and with wines starting as low as 8 quid (as Penny would say), you can’t go wrong. The wines tonight included the Wilunga Grenache 2010 priced at £10.99 from the McLaren Vale region the Mitolo Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 priced at £14.99 and my favourite, the Dandelion Shiraz 2009 priced at £11.99 from the Barossa region. SCENE IN THE

CITY

HAVE YOUR CASH SAVINGS REACHED THE POINT OF NO RETURN? There has recently been a common theme of discussion with both my clients and prospects. Low interest rates! At the start of November 2011, the Consumer Prices Index was measured at 5.2% (the Retail Prices Index was 5.6%). With the Bank of England base rate at 0.5%, high inflation is becoming more and more of a danger for your cash savings. What a lot of my clients don’t realise is that even though the interest rates for their savings account is so low, it is still taxed 20% at source. Therefore, for every £100 of interest, you only receive £80. Furthermore, if you are higher or additional rate taxpayer, you still need to pay a further 20% or 30% on this gross amount via your annual self-assessment tax return. The concern is that it is likely that your savings are also failing to keep up with inflation. For example, a basicrate (20%) taxpayer needs to find an account paying 6.5% to keep pace with rising prices. 40% / 50% taxpayers need to find accounts paying 8.67% / 10.4% (source: Office for National Statistics, Nov 2011). Yet there are none that offer this rate, of course, all of which is why many savers are being forced to look farther afield to make the most of their money. If you have a Deposit Account or even a Cash ISA, ask yourself how much interest you are being paid. Of course, it will not match the above needed figures. Warren Buffet said “Inflation is a far more devastating tax than anything that has been enacted by our legislature”. With the cost of education, medicine and care homes rising and rising, can you afford to lose the purchasing power of your cash? Today there is a clear difference between a “saver” and an “investor”. Only the “investor” has a chance to overcome the dangerous impact of inflation.

AFFORDABLE PRIVATE COVER WITH SECUREHEALTH Healthcare provision in the UK is changing. The NHS is being reformed due to the controversial changes that the coalition government are implementing and there is increased pressure on the sort of new drugs and treatments that the state system can offer to patients. The private healthcare sector also needs to change to improve the efficiency and value of treatment and insurers are already looking at how they can improve the way their customers access the care they need. Making sure that private medical insurance products are cost effective, offer cover where it is really needed and give customers a real alternative to the NHS is vital. At SecureHealth we are working hard to ensure we have the right products and services to meet these challenges. We have brand new products available, aimed at people who would like some private cover but until now have been unable to afford it, or for customers who already have private medical insurance but are looking for a way to reduce the cost without necessarily sacrificing their cover. SecureHealth are specialist intermediaries and we pride ourselves on offering tailored, face to face advice and service. We are also owned by the AXA UK group of insurance businesses. Streetfighter Inspired by the Ducati Streetfighter 848, the “streetfighter yellow” colour of the SLK 55 AMG ensures an exciting appearance from all angles: the exceptional paint finish is guaranteed to provide a high level of appeal. If there is sufficient demand, the special colour variant could also be made available as an individual optional extra from the AMG Performance Studio.

60  SCENE

T

he overall look is also perfectly complemented by the interior of the SLK 55 AMG: the contrasting yellow stitching creates a striking effect against the black nappa leather appointments, and is to be found on the door centre panels, beltlines, armrests, leathercovered roll-over bars, dashboard, the shift lever gaiter and also the AMG Performance steering wheel. Yellow illuminated AMG door sill panels featuring LED technology round off the striking effect of the interior. The portfolio of the AMG Performance Studio ranges from special paintwork and leather appointments, through to technical solutions and extensive body modifications. The stylish vehicle upgrades are undertaken to a high level of hand-crafted perfection in accordance with individual customer requirements, while at the same time

also meeting the highest safety and quality standards typical of MercedesBenz. The Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG and the Ducati Streetfighter 848 complement each other not only visually but also technically. Both models are the perfect embodiment of distinctive driving dynamics, expressive design and intense driving pleasure. The SLK 55 AMG is the most powerful SLK of all time. Its newly developed AMG 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine with cylinder shut-off system combines ultimate performance with the lowest possible consumption levels. With a maximum output of 310 kW (422 hp) and maximum toque of 540 Nm, the SLK 55 AMG outperforms all of its direct competitors. Its fuel consumption of 8.4 litres per 100

kilometres (NEDC combined) and CO2 emissions of 195 grams per kilometre are some 30 percent lower than those of its predecessor. The SLK 55 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). High levels of driving dynamics are ensured thanks to the AMG sports suspension with DirectSteer system, Torque Vectoring Brakes and 3-stage ESP速, as well as the AMG high-performance braking system. Forming part of the third-generation of the SLK, the new top-of-the range AMG model already demonstrates its individuality even at first glance: distinctive AMG light-alloy wheels, specific AMG bodystyling with AMG spoiler lip and two chrome-plated twin tailpipes at the rear complement the classic roadster proportions, while adding a markedly athletic touch.

SCENE 61

The expressive design of the SLK 55 AMG is both eyecatching and unmistakable. Ducati Streetfighter 848: superior competitor – ultimate fighter The new Ducati Streetfighter 848 provides unbridled biking pleasure in its purest form, while combining innovative technology with an outstanding appearance: a revised 848 Testastretta 11° engine with 97 kW (132 hp) and an exciting 93.5 Nm of torque as well as a modified frame geometry help to guarantee safe, agile handling. This is supported by the smooth, easyto-manage power delivery of the engine, revised ergonomics and a specially tuned traction control (DTC) system. The features of the new Streetfighter are rounded off in visual terms by the unique Ducati styling. The Streetfighter 848 is guaranteed to cause a sensation, whether on the road or on the race track. It was no surprise therefore when, true to its name, the Ducati Streetfighter scored an immediate knock-out on entering the ring for the first time at the EICMA show in 2008 in Milan. The impression which it left among the international press and public on its first appearance meant it was not only able to win the show’s “Most Beautiful Bike” award, but it also raised the bar for powerful naked bikes even higher by becoming the new benchmark on the market. In addition to the colour variant in traditional red with red frame, the new Streetfighter 848 is also available in yellow with frame in Racing Black. The Dark Stealth colour variant, meanwhile, with frame in Racing Black underscores the fierce attitude of the Streetfighter. With the exciting new Streetfighter 848, Ducati has succeeded in combining state-of-the-art technology and skeletal styling in a contemporary design. 62 SCENE

THIS OPEN-TO-EVERYONE UTOPIA HOUSES TWO STUDIOS, ONE FOR YOGA AND THE OTHER FOR HOT YOGA. EACH ARE SOFT UNDER FOOT WITH CUSHIONED MATTING WHILE TEA LIGHT CANDLES AND INCENSE DOT THE PERIMETER TO CREATE AN EDEN OF TRANQUILITY AND PEACE. IT SETS THE SCENE TO REFLECT, TO BE QUIET AND TO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND EMPTY YOUR MIND. AN IDYLLIC WAY TO SPEND AN HOUR OR TWO IN OUR BUSY, RUSH-FILLED LIVES. SCENE TALKS WITH THE AMIABLE ENTREPRENEUR WHO CREATED THIS DREAMLAND.

Words by Louise Prew Claire, Breeze is amazing and so timely. What is the concept behind it? I wanted to create a yoga club with specific holistic activities in mind. I listened to what people wanted and they wanted the whole package...meditation, Pilates... A place to come and just be 100% holistic. We offer up to 80 classes a week based on all the yoga practises as well as good wholesome food and treatments to unwind and relax the body. It’s the kind of place you would see in Islington, North London. You were brave to do it here in Kent, has it been successful? Incredibly successful. Its a one off so far, but we have had so much interest from teachers that we are planning to roll out a franchise model. I’ve worked in managerial roles in health clubs for 20 years. I saw a gap in the market and went for it. People were always asking me for more holistic classes.

How does it compare to a gym? We are not the same, but we compliment the gym. People are set in their ways and often want to thrash it out in a Combat or Attack class but I found that more and more people were disgruntled, asking me for holistic classes, classes which looked after the body and had a discipline. They wanted classes which gave long-term benefits and results. There was a need to bring these classes to the people that wanted it and that number is growing. People reach a stage in their life when they just want to be calmer. Everybody is more educated now about the dangers of stress and most people know that meditation and being calm is going to have a beneficial effect long-term. They are coming over to the softer side! Tell us about hot yoga Hot yoga is a fantastic class . The room is heated to 42 degrees and you must hydrate your body before, during and after the class. You wear vests and leggings for comfort as you will sweat! This is a very popular class and a fantastic workout . It’s kind to your body. It deals with physical and mental needs and importantly, it can burn up to 1000 calories which is of course a massive benefit. For anyone new to yoga, how would you tempt them in? We offer two flows of yoga. Flow 1 is for beginners and flow 2 is for intermediates. There is no sense of competition here. It’s about education, yoga is a proven practice, it not only clears the mind and changes a person into a calmer individual, it works on the body internally and it’s safer and kinder to your muscles. I have a wonderful team of dedicated yoga teachers who are really clued up and very experienced. Anyone who comes to our classes will want to continue. It’s a very inspiring practice. Is there still that misconception about yoga being all about the stretch? Yes definitely! There is a lot of stretching, Pilates for instance really works the core muscles but

its not just for middle-aged people who want to take it easy. Yoga is popular with everyone. We have teenagers, young adults of 20+ as well as mums, dads and older clients. It is a great workout for the body and it enhances your whole life. Each position has proven results, massaging the internal and external organs. It helps with digestion, heart and lung function and sleep patterns. It changes the way you act in daily life; increases consciousness and ultimately helps you re-evaluate and re-address your life. How quickly will you see results? Yoga is a constant journey and its an exciting one, once you start looking at your life holistically and really listening to your body, you’ll immediately reap the benefits. Iyengar yoga is results-led and people find muscles they never knew they had. Its not all about yoga, tell us about the Namaste Therapy We are very lucky to have an Ayurvedic practitioner here and his treatments are amazing, he’s been featured in the Evening Standard for his ability. From balancing chakra’s and healing head massage, it has to be tried to be believed. We have an acupuncturist and an osteopath and the treatments we have for beauty are there for the purpose of relaxing clients and beautifying them. We want people to feel good. We also have philosophical talks whereby people can come along and listen to an uplifting speaker. You must be very proud of your achievement Thank you, yes I am. I have a great team. It’s been fifteen years of hard work in the face of adversity. But my father said to me, “Claire, when you go into business, everybody will have opinions, but not the facts, you’ve got to be prepared” That’s helped me a lot.
