Read... The Academy-Award-winning actress, Gwyneth Paltrow, is an icon of style and taste around the world. But for her, family comes above everything, and cooking and eating together are the key ingredients of a happy home. Now she has put her passion for food into her first cookbook which is full of 150 fresh, original and practical recipes (both healthy and indulgent) that all the family will love. Both accessible and inspiring, this beautifully illustrated and easy-to-use cookbook is full of lavish photographs, many featuring Gwyneth’s family and friends. This is Gwyneth Paltrow as you have never seen her before - a busy working mum who understands the time pressures on all of us as well as the desire to cook delicious and original food. Light... We just adore these wonderfully quirky pendant lights - a great statement of British eccentricity! Inspired by the classic Banker’s Bowler Hat, the Jeeves & Wooster Lights are made by hand from wool felt and reinforced with an aluminium lining in a gold (Jeeves) or silver (Wooster) finish. The lights are designed by Jake Phipps as a playful take on lighting with a real sense of cultural identity. Available from The French Bedroom Company £150.00
Play... Are you sitting down? Of course you are. No one surfs the interweb standing up – that’s like sneezing with your eyes open. Well if for some reason you happen to be standing, take a load off for a moment. Because we’re about to show you a flying toy so cool it makes standard RC helicopters look like paper aeroplanes. With four independently-powered leaf blowers – sorry, propellers – two built-in cameras and a smorgasborg of futuristic gadgetry packed into its carbon fibre frame, the Parrot AR Drone is the most intuitive remote controlled flyer we’ve ever seen. But the best part is that this high tech quadricopter is controlled entirely from your iPhone! Available from firebox.com £299.99
Listen... Born This Way is the highly anticipated forthcoming second studio album by American recording artist Lady Gaga. The album is scheduled for release on May 23rd. ENTER THE D ragon Words by Luke Harman
FOR ANY UNKNOWN, FLEDGLING ENTREPRENEUR, AN IMMENSELY HECTIC SCHEDULE COMES WITH THE TERRITORY WHEN LAUNCHING A NEW RETAIL BRAND, BUT UNKNOWN AND FLEDGLING ARE TWO WORDS A WORLD AWAY FROM THE LIFE OF RETAIL MAGNATE-COMETV STAR, THEO PAPHITIS.
18 SCENE
D
espite his outwardly, friendly nature and willingness to answer any question thrown at him, it is clear that Mr Paphitis’ time is precious, and understandably so. Coupled with the behind-the-scenes efforts of establishing a major new shopping experience has been a gruelling PR campaign for a man who is not only the brains behind the brand, but the increasingly popular and smiling face. A fifteen minute phone interview the night before the official launch party (in late March) is about as good as it’s going to get. Having built a well-respected retail empire over the last fifteen years, April 2011 marked a fresh chapter in the story of Theo’s business portfolio as he unveiled luxury lingerie brand, Boux Avenue. Representing his third foray into the lingerie market and what has arguably now become his specialist subject, the steely dragon is quietly confident in this his latest venture. “You know, anyone who is ever that arrogant that they never worry about something failing, is going to fail. But of course I’m confident Boux is going to succeed, and it’s going to succeed because of exactly that. I always worry that it’s going to fail so I make sure that it doesn’t,” explains the 51-year-old. Wise words of a man who has made his name and fortune from the success of various businesses which, without his intervention, were otherwise destined to fail. It could be suggested, however, that this is perhaps his most difficult task to date. With the residue of the recession still with us, as Theo so very aptly describes it, the launch of Boux Avenue could be deemed a bold and brave step as other struggling retail chains continue to post poor profit figures and even disappear off the face of our high streets. But Theo is unperturbed, “I’ve been involved in lingerie for many years, with La Senza and Contessa. It’s a subject I know a little bit about and felt there was a real big need in the market for where Boux has positioned itself.”
SCENE 19
“And on the basis that I had a willing team, we were able to secure some good sites and we had an image and a view of what Boux should be, we decided to go for it.” And go for it they have. Early April saw an initial six stores open in Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield, Bluewater, Cardiff and Lakeside with further plans in place to open an additional two stores around the country each month in the coming year. The residues of the recession clearly off the agenda for Mr Paphitis who has certainly signalled his intentions to regain his title as the King of British lingerie. Whether it’s selling bras and knickers at Boux Avenue or pens and pencils from what is Theo’s most synonymous association, Ryman, Paphitis is a self-confessed shopkeeper at heart. “I love what I do, I love retail,” he says with unmistakable passion. “I’m lucky enough to do what I love on a day-today basis. People ask me when I’m going to retire and my answer is always the same. The day I retire will be the day I die.” It is perhaps this drive, along with Theo’s unflinching desire to make money that has made him the successful entrepreneur he is today. Unsatisfied as Chairman of Ryman the stationers and co-owner of Red Letter Days, Theo’s desire to broaden his empire further is a simple illustration of a man with a thirst for success. At the end of 2008, he even explored the possibility of buying the now defunct Woolworths chain as it entered the doldrums of administration. But, recognising it was perhaps more trouble than it was worth, Woolworths was one project Theo had to eventually turn his back on. “It’s one of my biggest regrets,” he says with a pang of remorse. “I would have turned it into a profitable
business again but it was just too unrealistic.” It is this high standard of judgement and business acumen that made Theo an ideal resident expert on the hit show, Dragon’s Den. An excellent addition to the panel in 2005, his prolonged association with the BBC programme has endeared him to a British public who not only recognise his genuine passion for business, but appreciate his nononsense attitude to those without a clue. A Simon Cowell of the corporate world, perhaps. Theo Paphitis has come a long way from his humble roots in Cyprus it would seem. Born in Limassol in 1959, before immigrating to the UK with his family in 1966, Theo’s journey to success was far from plain sailing. Plagued by childhood dyslexia it was clear his skills lay outside the academic classroom, as was evident when establishing what he considers his first profitable retail outlet – the school tuck shop. Still mildly affected by his dyslexia today, Theo attributes the wonders of modern technology to overcoming his trouble with words. “I can’t spell,” he laughs. “I’m absolutely terrible at spelling. But the iPhone is great; it corrects words I’ve misspelt to stop me looking like an idiot.” “As a youngster, if I couldn’t spell a word I’d just find another one that meant the same thing. It didn’t help me with words I couldn’t spell but it definitely improved my vocabulary.” This refreshingly simple common sense and logical competency has enabled Theo to chance his arm in other areas of business. In 1997, he was encouraged to invest in a then, Division Two
20 SCENE
football team. Having initially turned down the chance to become financially involved with a sport he had admired for many years, Theo eventually gave in and became Chairman of Millwall Football Club, a position he held for eight seasons. Reminiscing on his time at the helm of the South London outfit, Theo has only fond memories. “It was the best time of my life,” he explains emphatically. “I was only meant to be there for three years but I ended up there for eight. We took Millwall to the FA Cup Final against Manchester United in 2004 and it was fantastic, truly wonderful.” Despite pleasant recollections of his time in football, Theo has no regrets about his decision to stand down from his position at the club. “It was the right time,” he says. “On top of my role at Millwall I was chief executive and chairman at Ryman, Partners, Contessa and La Senza.”
“It was getting to the point where I was doing something I had promised I would never do – allowing my business and other interests to detract from my family life.” Family is a value that resonates throughout a conversation with Theo Paphitis. With numerous references to the infamous ‘Mrs P’ on the telephone and, of course, on Dragons Den, it is no secret that ‘Mr P’ has a loyal and loving family supporting him. Though this is perhaps as far as Mrs P’s role extends when it comes to Theo’s work. “We make a great team,” explains Mr P, “Mrs P does a fantastic job looking after our home and raising our children. I do what I do and Mrs P does what she does and its always been that way. She’s the boss at home and I’m the boss at the office, it works for us.”

With some of the stress of launching an all-new retail brand abated for a while, there is perhaps a chance for Mr P to indulge in some of the finer things in life. Rarely seen without his custom-chrome Maybach (with the unmistakable RYM4N number plate), oft emblazoned with unsightly yet charitable Comic Relief promotion, the wealthy Cypriot has something of a soft spot for motoring. “I’ve got a lot of cars, too many to count. But the good news is,” he says, pausing for effect, “I only drive them one at a time.” It’s hard to dislike Theo Paphitis. With a reported wealth of £160m at his disposal he could perhaps be forgiven for any arrogance or lack of humility. But there is none of that. A conversation with him is light and pleasant and he appears willing not only to promote his brand but to speak candidly about any subject raised, well, nearly any subject. Asked if there is anything else he would like to achieve in the business world or in his personal life, Theo is uncharacteristically vague. “There are so many things I want to do before I die,” he says quite chirpily, “and the sad thing is I know I won’t be able to do all of them.” Any thought of gaining a weird and wonderful insight into Mr P’s bucket list is promptly quashed however. “But I can’t tell you what they are, they’re mine.” Despite his warm and honest nature it would appear that even this dragon has things lurking in the darkest dungeons of secrecy.
SCENE 23
THE Bickley
24 SCENE
Words by Luke Harman
L
ocated in a leafy corner of Chislehurst is a four-storey Victorian building brimming with excitement. Re-launched in February as a venue for food and wine lovers, The Bickley is more than just a restaurant. Encapsulating all that we British love about dining out, this impressive venue caters for one and all on any imagined scale. Whether it’s a romantic meal for two on a weekday evening, a family get together on a Sunday afternoon or an all day wedding for a hundred guests, The Bickley not only has the space, but the environment and spectacular quality to make your experience truly memorable. “The food, the service and the environment are all synergetic,” says owner and director Terry Pullen. “It’s a place to eat but we strive to provide a bespoke level of service and entertainment too.” “My vision has always been about the business of entertainment. People don’t just go out to eat because they’re starving hungry, but because they want an experience - that’s the inspiration behind The Bickley.”
A new and somewhat unique feature of the rejuvenated establishment is the fully-functional roof terrace restaurant. Offering a service on a par with the two indoor restaurant areas, al fresco dining has never been so civilised. Seated under a canopy overlooking the quaint walled garden, Wendy house and all, guests can order from a menu packed with dishes of the highest calibre. “Eclectic British is how I’d best describe our food,” explains Terry. “Eclectic because there are influences from all over the world and British because it’s presented not in a Michelin star fashion but in a simple, hearty British way.” “We believe in the best ingredients and putting them together creatively but without fuss. Great ingredients don’t really need too much doing to them; it’s all about the taste.” Despite undemanding appearances, the food at The Bickley is prepared by the hands of chefs with more than extensive experience. Executive Chef Kelvin Sturman was named Gastro Chef of the Year in 2005 whilst Head Chef, Simon Maynard, has worked in
such reputable kitchens as The Savoy and The Oxo Tower, before landing his most impressive role to date, Senior Sous at Roux at Parliament Square, under the watchful eye of culinary legend, Michel Roux Junior. Although a restaurant at heart, the management also encourages customers to pop in for a drink. With a newly refurbished wine bar serving a selection of beverages and food boards, all of which are made up freshly in front of you, and the flourishing walled garden as a delightful backdrop to a lazy afternoon glass of red, The Bickley endeavours to provide a service for even the most fleeting of visitors. Whether it’s lobster and chips or a 28oz chateaubriand steak that takes your fancy, or perhaps just a glass of wine accompanied by an artisan cheese board, The Bickley endeavours to cater for any mood. And with enduring warmer weather fast approaching, this once rundown pub is emerging as the ultimate venue for all your summer celebrations.

MINIMALIST DESIGN COMBINED WITH NEOBAROQUE DETAILS, TECHNOCRATIC DESIGN COMBINED WITH BRICK RED HIGHLIGHTS, A WHITE KITCHEN FEATURING A MIXTURE OF MATT GLASS AND WHITE CRYSTAL FRONTS, STYLISHLY SPOTLIGHTED BY THE MOODLIGHT LIGHTING SYSTEM, OR A KITCHEN IN BLACK OAK WITH A SILESTONE CHROME WORKTOP - THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE COLOURFUL MIXTURES OF STYLES FEATURED IN WARENDORF KITCHEN DESIGNS FOR 2011
A
new take on “Elegant Fascination”, the combined Warendorf and Starck by Warendorf kitchen, will be cleverly extending the imaginative Warendorf repertoire in 2011. The combination of two product lines has resulted in a fascinating mixture: the wall unit, the island and the tower have become one. The combination of high gloss lacquer and smooth lacquer in the wall unit and the black oak of the island creates a luxurious, elegant and stylishly exclusive effect. The kitchen is unexpectedly versatile with the wall unit, the island solution and the Hot Tower from the STARCK COLLECTION. The previous bronze glass version of the “Elegant Fascination” kitchen design has been awarded the Interior Innovation Award 2011 by the Design Council. The new version on show at the LivingKitchen stylishly combines a grey Silestone worktop with chrome effects and a black oak island. This combination of colour and nature inspires a very special fascination. SCENE 41
T
he Starck by Warendorf Duality kitchen is comprised of a free standing kitchen island that acts as a room divider with a practical pass-through and the trumpet table, the basis of haute cuisine. The latter also serves as an architectural element linking the living room and dining room. This version of Duality is a menu featuring class and personality. Duality gets its name from its two-faceted utilisation - living and cooking, design and functionality. This kitchen from the Starck by Warendorf product line is shown here in stainless steel coloured laminate, with shelves in pure white. The white niche is harmoniously highlighted by the surrounding niche frame with integrated grip handle that particularly accentuates the niche, which is designed as an open pass-through in this instance. This emphasises the visual contrast while at the same time spotlighting the practical interplay between the work and storage areas. The Duality kitchen is complemented by the trumpet table, which joins the preparation surface, sink area, hob and eating area and encourages hosts and guests to linger awhile.
DUALITY - ARCHITECTURAL ROOM DIVIDER WITH A TWO-FACETED APPEARANCE
P
rimary can be interpreted in many different ways: first class, elementary, or even original. The central working area with niche provides all the basic functions needed. Preparation and cooking area with sink, draining board and hob are made of stainless steel - the material used in professional kitchens: surfaces that reflect the light from the surrounding yellow mirror fronts in all of its nuances. From greenish lime to sunny orange to refreshing yellow – the mirror fronts capture the widest range of moods, depending on the angle of incidence and the brightness of the light from the recessed light rail in the shelf or the two unusual lamps in the living room, and transmit them to the room itself. Stocks and favourite items are stored and displayed in the open shelves at the side.

46 SCENE
DID YOU KNOW? • RHS Chelsea Flower Show was originally called the RHS Great Spring Show, and that name has never officially been changed. • Despite the First World War, the show was held in 1914 – 1916, but cancelled in 1917.
DID YOU KNOW? • Japanese dwarf trees, now known as bonsai, were first seen at the first show in 1913. • The show was cancelled during the Second World War, when the land was requisitioned by the War Office for an anti-aircraft site. • In 1937, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth celebrated their Coronation year, and an ‘Empire Exhibition’ was staged. It featured wattles from Australia, pines from Canada, gladioli from East Africa and even a prickly pear from Palestine.

FROM SURGERIES TOSplendour STEEPED IN HISTORY, THE OLD HOSPITAL IN MAIDSTONE, KENT, HAS BEEN LOVINGLY RESTORED AND CONVERTED INTO CONTEMPORARY, SPACIOUS APARTMENTS
H
iggins Homes, one of the UK’s most established house builders, has redesigned the listed building and retained many of its original features and character. Offering a collection of exceptional properties and a location in the heart of historical Maidstone, living at this development is fast becoming the envy of many. Michael Davies, a retired eye surgeon who worked at the former Ophthalmic and Aural Hospital for 20 years, has paid keen attention to the fate of the building since its closure in 2003. Michael comments: “When I initially heard that the eye unit was being relocated to Maidstone Hospital,
my first thought was whether the building would be torn down, as was the case with the West Kent Hospital which was also a listed building. With its wealth of period features and a magnificently grand façade, I believed that the building should be protected.” “The sales staff at The Old Hospital have been extremely accommodating and even invited me on a tour of the building, where I was able to see apartments which have been converted from my old operating theatre as well as another which was previously the hospital chapel. Higgins Homes have done an outstanding job and the apartments really do highlight all of the period features. My favourite part is the main foyer with the period staircase rising up to the apartments above.” SCENE 51

Jeremy Marcus, Sales and Marketing Director for Higgins Homes, comments: “Our aim at The Old Hospital was to enhance the building, showcasing its character and features.” “With the help of a conservation officer, we’ve retained its history and provided expertly designed and executed apartments which sit perfectly with their surroundings. We are extremely proud of the development and as a testament to its success, it was recently awarded the Best Apartment Kent and Best Apartment UK awards at the International Property Awards, sponsored by Bloomberg and Google. The Old Hospital is an elegant collection of Grade II listed buildings, which have been converted into 17 studio, one, two and three bedroom luxury apartments as well as newly built one and two bedroom apartments in the grounds which are ideally located just off Church Street in the heart of Maidstone. Original stone mullion windows still remain in many of the converted apartments which have been carved out of the existing building, keeping apartments light and spacious. Ceilings as high as 15.5ft are common place and the internal specifications are exceptionally high, considering the value for money these apartments offer. Higgins Homes have recently introduced their renowned ‘Step Up’ scheme to The Old Hospital development, which is aimed at assisting first time buyers with the purchase of their home. While most mortgage lenders require 25% deposits from first time buyers, the Step Up scheme allows purchasers to take advantage of up to a 20% equity deposit from Higgins Homes as a rent and interest free equity loan for up to ten years. The purchaser will require a minimum personal 5% deposit, and is then entitled to purchase the remaining 20% at any time, at the then current market price, over the next ten years. A 75% mortgage for the remainder of the property price would then be required. Maidstone town centre is superb, with a range of restaurants, bars and cafés, as well as high street and independent shops. Conveniently situated for commuters, Maidstone East Station is less than 500 metres away from the development and has regular direct trains to London Victoria, which take under an hour.
Prices currently range from £149,950 for a one-bedroom apartment, £159,950 for two bedrooms and £325,000 for a three-bedroom, ground floor apartment with private terrace. The sales and marketing suite and show apartment is open daily from 10am to 5pm and is contactable on telephone: 01622 661 511 or visit the website: www.higginshomes.co.uk SCENE 53

CAN YOU IDENTIFY THE MARKINGS OF THE PERFECT INDIAN EXPERIENCE? PERHAPS THE LOCAL CURRY HOUSE IS RENOWNED FOR THEIR SUPERIOR TIKKA MASALA, AN APPEALING PROSPECT, BUT YOU CRAVE A NIGHT OF FINE DINING WITH THE FRIENDS, LONDON IT IS. HOW DOES A LOCAL FUSION OF THE ABOVE SOUND? Words & Photos by Gary Verby
T
ake a public and critically acclaimed head Chef, directed by a famed Indian catering guru, a décor of real class and a service comparable to that of a michelin star restaurant. Does that sound like your fabled Indian experience? It sounds like Cinnamon Culture. When Manpreet Dhingra, the MD of the renowned Asian Catering company Saffron D’or, partnered with London’s Babur Brasserie’s Head Chef extraordinaire, Jiwan Lal, they began developing the pinnacle Indian restaurant. Expertise pours through the chic neon decoration; sophistication exudes from the team of servers and this is before being seated. Contemporary Asian cuisine is evidently the undertaking, and the dream team of modern minds and traditional hearts defines Cinnamon Culture’s hailed attention.
56 SCENE
Presentation is key with modern dining, an element that many current restaurants hold in high esteem. However, it is a single element, a puzzle piece of the fine cuisine experience that is always fresh in the owner’s mind. Rather than being consumed by this narrow mentality, Manpreet and Jiwan have formed an establishment that symbiotically delivers the finest dishes with the artistry of a genuine specialist. Take the ‘Samundari Ratan’, a starter which by most standards has the quality and love of the most elegant main course. For chef Jiwan, this is a dish of delicate showmanship, blending the finest fresh scallops and wrapping them in a crisp thin pastry, garnished with grapes and tamarind chutney. In every sense, delicious, and a real visual marvel to admire, relish in the presentation before the temptation consumes you to take a bite. If a unique, dairy alternative is what you crave then look no further than the ‘Panneer Tikka’. This perfectly chargrilled delight is a tender and rounded Indian cheese entrée, classily seasoned with ground spices, accompanied with raw Popaya chutney. It becomes clear from this point onwards that the exclusivity and praised dexterity of the chef is not merely a label, but a defining characteristic. Just when that final sip of Cobra is taken, charming waiter, Arvind, is ready to refuel moments before the mains arrive. Whilst never a rule of thumb to give hyperbole to any single area of a dining experience, your main course will bring the concept of striking presentation back into the picture. Allowing the food to do the mouth watering, it is simple to state that the ‘Chicken Chettinal’ will without question be SCENE 57
the most exclusive and distinctive dish you could order. Upon arrival, you may just double take the waiter for bringing one of the restaurants many ornaments to your table, but before sending it back to the mantle piece, know that this is classified as a fool’s cap. To be specific, the tanned pyramid is a rice dosa made structure, a triangular pancake texture encapsulating steaming South Indian style chicken. Any frequent diner will agree that an authentic high-class dish filters through all our bodily senses, none such as this delight. There is certain praise necessary when a dessert can represent a style and tone of the establishment it came from. The Choco Gulab Jamun feels apt at Cinnamon Culture. Lush, sweet and cool, this chocolate milk dumpling is all at once delectable and rich in flavour. There is an inimitable dynamism that displays real artistic care. Manpreet and Jiwan have not just created a culture, they have redefined the Indian Cuisine experience.

SCENE Wellbeing HOW TO PREVENT GARDEN RELATED INJURIES
AS WARMER WEATHER IS APPROACHING AND THE GARDENING SEASON BEGINS, THERE IS A GREAT TENDENCY FOR PEOPLE TO SPEND HOURS WORKING IN THE GARDEN WITHOUT RESTING OR HAVING REGULAR BREAKS. EVERY YEAR WE SEE MANY PATIENTS WITH BACK PAIN, SLIPPED DISCS, POSTURAL AND REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURIES OCCURRING DUE TO GARDENING. Below are some top tips to keep you injury free, allowing you to spend more time outside enjoying your garden: 1. If you have a history of low back problems, take extra care when bending and lifting. This is when your back is most vulnerable. Use the correct lifting techniques, even with lifting light objects – get into good habits! 2. Start off with easy tasks and progress onto more difficult ones (like warming up in exercise) 3. Vary your activity every 20 minutes – staying in the same position for long periods of time puts a lot of strain on your muscles. 4. Pace yourself; don’t try and do the whole garden in one weekend. Little and often is better, plan things in stages. 5. Digging and pulling out roots or bushes causes the most injuries. Loosen up the ground first, don’t dig when it is very dry and use leverage to assist you. HOW TO COMPENSATE FOR THOSE EASTER CALORIES
WITH EASTER NOW BEHIND US, AND SUMMER JUST AROUND THE CORNER, I HAVE DEVISED A FEW TIPS AND EXERCISES TO BURN OFF THE CHOCOLATE AND GET THE SUMMER BODY YOU REALLY DESIRE. SO NOW LETS BURN THOSE EXTRA CALORIES THAT WE’VE ALL CONSUMED . . .
When people say they want to lose weight for their summer holiday, what they actually mean is “I want to burn fat”. One of the most effective ways of burning this unwanted excess fat is a form of training known as peripheral heart action (PHA). This works by maintaining a high intensity of heart rate to burn fat and at the same time build muscle. It consists of backto-back exercises working your upper and lower body, followed by fast paced cardiovascular exercise. So here is how you can perform this at home . . . Equipment needed includes: Dumb Bells ranging between 2kg and 10kg. A five minute warm up should be done before any exercise. For this programme perform 2 minutes of gentle jogging on the spot gradually building into 2 minutes of jogging on the spot with high knees and then 1 minute of star jumps.
MAIN PROGRAM Exercise Press Ups Deep Squats Prone Fly
Equipment Dumb Bells Dumb Bells

Equipment Dumb Bells Dumb Bells Dumb Bells 1 minute rest
Repetitions 20 20 20

All exercises should be performed with perfect posture remembering to keep a nice flat spine and no arching of the back. Please consult your doctor if you suffer with any health issues at all and/ or are taking any medication. M600 INCREDINOBLE
THE NOBLE M600 IS A CAR PRODUCED NOT IN COMPETITION TO THE CURRENT SUPERCAR ESTABLISHMENT, BUT ONE, THAT OFFERS THOSE SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR DRIVING, AN ALTERNATIVE PHILOSOPHY AND A MORE REWARDING DRIVING EXPERIENCE. ONE OF THE MOST FREQUENT QUESTIONS ASKED IS ‘WHAT OF THE CURRENT SUPERCARS IS THE NOBLE’S COMPETITION?’ THE HONEST REPLY IS ‘NONE WHATSOEVER’.

IT’S GOT 650BHP, A BETTER POWERTO-WEIGHT THAN A VEYRON, AND A PRICE TAG OF £200,000
You’re probably thinking, ‘hang on a second, that’s not new, I remember seeing it in 2009’? Yes. You would have seen the M600 in 2009. But that, dear readers, was a prototype. This, according to Noble, is the final, production-ready supercar set to give the automotive aristocracy a kick up the splitter.
Quick stats - a 4.4-litre Volvo/Yamaha V8 produces three power outputs depending on how many Weetabix you’ve had that morning. The ‘Road’ setting gives you 450bhp, ‘Track’ bumps it up to 550bhp, and ‘Race’ commands 650bhp. Each increases the boost curve and throttle response. It weighs 1,250kgs, and with the Stig-switch applied (650bhp) gives
around 530bhp-per-tonne, prompting the inevitable headline-grabbing reference to something Bugattishaped and fast... Noble reckons it’ll hit 120mph from rest in 8.9 seconds and go on to an estimated 225mph, making it quite a handy bit of kit. SCENE 63
The tub is made from stainless sheet steel, it’s mid-engined and rear-wheeldrive and, though prices haven’t been confirmed, will probably cost something in the region of £200,000. Aesthetics are of course subjective, beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder. However there are certain engineering absolutes, particularly when creating a supercar featuring such massive power and performance, which dictate, in order to have full aerodynamic and cooling efficiency that certain design criteria must be met. It is Noble’s belief that form should always follow function, there is much in the philosophy, ‘if it looks right it probably is right’. Utilising extensive wind tunnel testing they have strived to maintain the form to be as minimalist as possible whilst providing the ultimate aerodynamic and cooling efficiency. Nothing is cosmetic; every element of the shape and design is intrinsic to performance efficacy.
64 SCENE
Noble take great pride in their reputation for the excellent ride and handling of their performance cars. They firmly believe that the chassis is the fundamental foundation of any performance car. This is particularly the case with cars which do not feature a great deal of computer technology. Computer assistance can often mask deficits in the chassis design and it is not until these electronic driver aids are turned off that the flaws are revealed. There is no engineering logic which dictates that precise and effective handling should be to the detriment of comfort and ride quality. Noble believe that an effectively designed and engineered chassis should be able to combine both high speed capability and driver comfort. Their engineering, based on a ‘back to basics’ ethos, devotes a huge amount of time and resources in ensuring that the chassis is as efficient and effective as possible. This is ably demonstrated by the M600, the high speed handling is superb and the ride is both comfortable and smooth.
