oney, fame, charm – he’s got it all, and Simon Cowell shows no sign of leaving the music or television industry any time soon. The 51-year-old erupted on to our television screen nearly a decade ago as a talent show judge and has since made his name as being brutally honest – if at times controversial – on shows like Pop Idol, X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. With the launch of America’s version of the X Factor this month (September), Cowell just seems to be unstoppable and infectious in the world of television talent. Who would have thought a multimillionaire like Cowell started off working in the post room? Yes, believe it or not, the pearly white-teethed, bronzed man was once on the bottom of the food chain working in the mail room at EMI Music Publishing. He worked his way up the greasy pole and was eventually promoted to music publishing but then the free-spirited guy broke off in the early 1980s to form E & S Music. He lived the high life in the 1980s, signing numerous acts to a number of record labels, including Fanfare and BMG, acquainting himself with the likes of 5ive and Westlife along the way. He also played a major role in the success of 80s popstar, Sinitta, with whom he is still close friends today. But like any great man he had his falling – and when he fell, it was from a great height. During his early 30s Cowell lost it all and returned home to his parents’ house until he got back up on his feet again. And that he did. By the early ‘noughties’ he had set up Syco Music, which later became part of Columbia Records and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, and took to our screens as one of the most honest – but maybe harshest – critics in the industry. Many a Saturday night, millions of British television viewers would sit at home and prepare themselves for the entertainment that came with a television singing competition.

In his high-waisted trousers, bland selection of grey, black or white t-shirts and brilliant white teeth Simon Cowell would have people cringing, crying and laughing with his honesty. Sitting alongside other industry front-runners, he would always be the one to take the direct route, give brutal comments but also be the one judge that every contestant wanted to impress. Viewers and wannabe superstars were drawn to him in a love-hate relationship. He was the judge contestants would stand on the stage and wait with baited breath to hear what he had to say, from: “It wasn’t your best performance...” to: “Wow, that blew me away.” Worth millions of pounds, Cowell has signed dozens of artists in his time and in recent years many have included the likes of television talent show contestants Leona Lewis, Gareth Gates and other X Factor winners, and all are released on Syco, propelling them into the industry. He has worked with the likes of Sharon Osborne, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole and continues to nurture some of the greatest stars the industry has seen in the last decade – Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle to name but a few. With his fingers in many different pies there are numerous shows Cowell has been involved in behind the scenes in both the UK and America including ITV’s Grease is the Word and American Inventor. You name it, he’s done it.

Cowell has maintained an aura about him throughout his “public-private” life, keeping the media at a comfortable distance and whether in the UK or America, Cowell always seems to be working. Although an international superstar in his own right, his priorities always lie with his work and the industry. But underneath that hard exterior the public have often seen a softer side to Cowell. A number of times he’s been reduced to tears by moving music and a famous interview with Piers Morgan saw him talk frankly and honestly about his life growing up, the death of his father and his love for his beautiful fiancée Mezhgan Hussainy. We know very little about the love life of Cowell – other than he has thousands of female followers – and it appears he is determined to keep it that way. Aside from his red-carpet lifestyle, Cowell is often seen at some of the year’s most star-studded charity events and has been closely associated with The Association of Children’s Hospices and animal rights charity, PETA. So with houses around the world, a beautiful girl on his arm and a string of television shows under his belt, what does this man not have? He may have left an absent seat on the new series of the UK X Factor but Cowell will be hitting America’s screens next month for the US version of the show in a deal with broadcaster Fox that I am sure will have the nation screaming for more.

It had been 6 years since my last trip to the barbers, mainly because amongst leading a busy lifestyle, I had not actually found a barber who really understood what I wanted my hair to look like, so I had decided to invest in some clippers and just make do. I told all this to Jack and his response was simple, “Don’t worry, just leave me something to work with”. Approaching The Barber Club, I was a little nervous, mainly because I was also trying out a hot towel shave for the first time in my life, but also because it had been a long time since I’d had someone else cut my hair! I walked in to be greeted immediately by Jack, he sat me down and asked how I wanted my hair cut. Having worked in a ladie’s hair salon for many years before opening The Barber Club, Jack, is capable of a lot more than ‘short back & sides’. I explained to him a very rough idea of what I was after, and he cracked on. After some snipping and combing, he asked me to make sure I was happy with the length. “perfect” I said, and

Before I had even realised he had finished and given me the exact cut I wanted. “Time for your shave he said”. off he went to heat up a towel, as I sat in the chair anticipating his return. Returning, towel in hand he placed it over my face and lightly pressed it to my skin. “This opens up all the pores” he explains, “and makes it a much smoother shave”. He proceeded to apply the necessary gel to my face and got straight to it. I was amazed at both how gentle and precise he was with the blade, speaking as a man who did not know what to expect, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and, as I will be going back there when my hair needs cutting again, I think I can consider my self a member of The Barber Club. THE ToP FIvE qUESTIoNS ASKED BY BRIDES To BE: 1. What will suit me? We always tell brides the best way to find your dream dress is just to try all styles, from fishtail to fairy tale. our years of experience has let us believe that the question will answer itself, but the most important bit; you will have loads of fun! 2. Do I make a choice to suit my venue or location? Some women will have an idea of what they want, other won’t. Some people have been thinking about this dress for 10 years, others for less than 10 hour. A wedding is a massive thing to plan but one thing we believe in is that it should be the dress of your dreams everything else will follow. 3. Do I wear a veil? Every wedding is different; every dress is different. When it comes to veils, you will only know if a veil is right after you have chosen your dress. It also has to be right and appropriate for your style of wedding.

4. What am I going to do about my bridesmaids – they are all different sizes and personalities? We work very hard to accommodate both these criteria. We have a lovely choice of dresses in different styles and colours and by the time we’ve worked through all the options the end result is always exactly what the bride wanted. 5. Where do I start with colours? Ivory is suitable for most complexions, although white is still an option. Every bride is different and often you don’t know what will suit you best until you have a try on. The colour you choose for your bridesmaids should reflect you as a couple and be a joint decision amongst the main party members. We have about 70 colours to choose from so having a general idea is a good way to start but if not, we can always give a bit of inspiration. Ultimately it is the bride who will have the final say!

Planning and project management What Kitchen Designs of Sevenoaks specialise in is a concept-to-completion service potentially project managing the entire operation from kitchen design, through to building and structural work including associated electrics, gas and water. They are happy to work in tandem with customers’ architects and builders to ensure a complete and totally satisfactory project bringing the expertise of their stonemason in Eynsford, floor and wall tile supplier in Dunton Green. The aim being to achieve a full understanding of the customer’s ideas and aspirations before beginning the project partnership. Listening to customers. After all, after buying a house, the

kitchen is often the next biggest investment a customer will make. “A new client needs to have total confidence that we can provide a truly outstanding end result without hassle and this is where recommendations by existing clients proves to be so strong and valuable” explains Gary. “It doesn’t end when the project has been completed though. Customer service should continue, we look to support our customers and do our best to ensure that any issues that arise in the future are dealt with quickly and efficiently.” The majority of new kitchen buyers are unaware of the complexity of planning a kitchen that will not only look good and endure, but prove to be a pleasure to be in and work in – the kitchen is very often

THE OPTIOnS FOR SPLASHBACKS ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1. Painted - This is the cheapest of the options and probably the least resistant to marking but easy to change. You should use a specialist finish suitable for kitchens. 2. Tiles –More popular in traditional kitchens this is a very tough resistant material. There are a great number of different types and colours you can choose from for a very individual looking kitchen. 3. Stainless steel – Usually only used behind a hob it is very heat resistant and matches well with stainless steel appliances. Can be difficult to look after as it marks easily. 4. Glass – A very popular choice at the moment and comes in any colour you want. You can even get it made with your own picture or design on it. Glass isn’t the cheapest option but is the most resistant and will last a long time. It is very easy to look after and can be backlit for dramatic effect 5. Stone/composite- If you have a stone or composite worktop you may want your splashback to match for a nice seamless look. Also very robust and easy to look after but expensive when used in large areas.

6. Acrylic – Being one of the fairly new and more adaptable finishes available, it comes in a huge range of colours and can even have objects of a suitable thickness suspended within it at the production stage. Some examples of this are leaves, reeds, string, wood and metal, anything is possible. It can also be backlit. Arthaus Union Developments’ new scheme on the Richmond Road is soon to be the home of New zealander Camille Sanson, a high-end fashion photographer and her husband Sohail, a marketing professional. The couple were seduced by the developments’ modern art gallery, loft-style architecture and intriguing history, so they decided to buy a two-bedroom penthouse apartment. Arthaus, built within the framework of the former Flowers East Gallery which nurtured the British artists of the 90s, comprises 97 apartments. The development also includes a 2,000foot modern art gallery, GALERIE8, in its central atrium, to which residents have access. Camille, 32, comments: “I used to drive past the building when it was empty and wish I lived there. When I saw they had started to restore it, I enquired, and fell in love with the concept. The architecture is unique and the location is fantastically central.” Camille and Sohail have bought a penthouse with access to the roof garden and are excited about living in an art gallery. “I love the idea of

being surrounded by art, and having everything I need in one place. The building even has studio space so I could work here too. Because the development is in an old art gallery it has the perfect mix of character and modern living. The building reminds me of a New York warehouse.”

originally from New zealand, Camille is now a fully fledged Hackney-phile. “I love the markets, the pubs and the cafes here. Hackney has everything I need and more. There is always something new popping up, from yoga classes to gluten free bakeries. Hackney is my perfect London village.” Arthaus combines art with everyday living. Flooded with natural light, the permanent gallery will provide a space for established and up and coming artists to display their work. A restaurant and coffee shop are part of the gallery space providing a stylish and convenient area for residents and visitors to enjoy the atmosphere. Along with a permanent curator, GALERIE8 has a webzine which will allow residents to take part in the curation of the gallery in which they live. SCENE 49

A groundbreaking new show home at Arthaus features over £100,000 worth of original modern art by thirteen celebrated artists, including Andy Warhol. The show home merges a functional and stylish living space with an artistic gallery, and is the first of its kind. Using painting, photography, sculpture, installations and videos, the show house art exhibition, named Intimate Spaces, infuses the unoccupied show home with a sense of sentimental remembrance. The work, which alludes to both intimacy and domesticity, is displayed throughout the five bedroom house. Andy Warhol’s Polaroids of famous artists take larger than life personalities and intimately present them with all their vulnerability laid bare. Other artists featured in the show home include the award winning Roland Hicks, who monumentalises ordinary household items and Jemma Appleby, whose admired charcoal drawings combine architectural elements with landscape forms. David Pollock, Director of Union Developments, comments: “Arthaus is a revolutionary development and we wanted to create a show home which reflected that. 50  SCENE

Visitors will be able to view £100,000 worth of thought provoking artwork set against a domestic backdrop while viewing the home, which is something that has never been done before.” Each Arthaus property is built to a high specification, including under floor heating throughout, Starck design bathrooms, and porcelain tiles. The Pronom by Poggenpohl kitchens include granite worktops and contemporary appliances and there is also an exclusive 24-hour concierge service. Residents will also have access to a large communal roof terrace and entertainment room. The superbly designed apartments, town houses and working studios have been built within the framework of the famous Flowers East gallery. The industrial chic red brick building is in the heart of cultural Hackney, near the popular London Fields and Broadway Market. Prices start from £300,000 for one bedroom apartments, £390,000 for two bedroom apartments and £480,000 for three bedroom apartments. Diners can expect to nosh sumptuously on oysters, prawns, monkfish, sea bass, caviar, skate, Dover sole, halibut and much more. But fear not the sea-shy customer, as the menu will always provide an equally envious and classy menu of premium sourced steak and poultry dinners to suit your taste. Dishes to envy are the Fisherman’s Soup with Pernod: pure excellence and the Neptune Symphony, a glorious, heady mix of monkfish, salmon and mussels in a creamy Martini and orange sauce. very salubrious and a neat munch without overfilling. LA TORRE GOLF RESORT IS ARGUABLY THE MOST COMPLETE RESORT IN SOUTHERN SPAIN. CARVED INTO THE STUNNING MURCIA REGION, SCENE MAGAZINE SPENT THE WEEKEND DISCOVERING THE DELIGHTS OF ONE OF POLARIS WORLD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL ATTRACTIONS.

Words by Luke Harman

orget anything that is etched into the collective consciousness about Spanish developers. Forget about low quality construction, high density, unfinished developments and, most of all, the dreaded land grab. Instead, understand Polaris World, perhaps the most remarkable development company in the world. Part of Polaris World’s portfolio of resorts that stretch across Southeastern Spain, the resort at La Torre is dominated by an impressive 18-hole Nicklaus Design golf course.

With a dream to create the most spectacular collection of golf courses possible, it was always clear that the handprints of Nicklaus Design, and, in particular, Jack Nicklaus himself, would be an integral part of the Polaris experience. “of course, the name Nicklaus has long been associated with greatness on the golf course,” explains Polaris World CEo, José Luis Hernandez. “The 20 major championships, the electrifying finishes and the sheer will to win.” Jack’s achievements are legendary.

“Today, Nicklaus also stands for outstanding course design, a result of more than three decades as a renowned golf course designer. We believe that Nicklaus Design has elevated the standards of golf course design worldwide, which is why we were determined to secure the company as our partner.” Featuring over five hectares of elaborately sculpted bunkers, long grasses which create a windswept look and three large lakes, the La Torre golf course’s lush landscaping complements both the golf experience

SCENE 57

as well as the extended views from the surrounding development. The shorter length of the course makes it more playable for the average to higher-handicap players who will appreciate the four sets of tees and wide fairways. Similarly, La Torre Golf Resort incorporates a great deal of strategy making it an interesting challenge to the better players when played from the back tees. Complete with a full-feature practice facility, La Torre Golf Resort is sure to be a pleasant stop for golfers along the Nicklaus Golf Trail. For visitors less interested in golf, La Torre still has plenty to offer. Set around a wonderful lake, the town centre has a stunning variety of attractions: from an ice cream terrace to a speciality wine retailer, from a 2,000 sq metre supermarket to a juice and smoothie bar and from a beauty salon to a gymnasium – there is plenty to keep guests busy. For entertainment, residents can choose from a spike bar, an Irish Tavern, the residents’ clubhouse and 58  SCENE

sophisticated restaurants offering everything from up-market Italian to speciality pizzas. Bamboo is a fabulous cocktail bar overlooking the water and there is also a specialist rice restaurant called Limonero. Central to the resort is the InterContinental Hotel which boasts a covered pool and 14 treatment and relaxation rooms as part of its spa and is a further facility to explore for guests and visitors. Having opened in late 2008 it is the finest hotel in the region. Conscious of the demands of modern developments, such as the one at La Torre, Polaris is also working to secure water stocks for the area - as well as researching grasses for the golf courses and sport facilities, a feature of the developments that require less water than normal. On behalf of SCENE Magazine, our thanks are extended to Luke who moved out to Spain with his family from the UK to start a new life in 2006. He ended up as Sales Manager for both Golf and InterContinental Hotel, where he has been for the last 4 years, and his wonderful efforts helped make our stay a truly memorable experience.

THE NEW PORSCHE CAYMAN S BLACK EDITION COMBINES PERFORMANCE AND STYLE, WITH A 3.4-LITRE FLAT-SIX ENGINE TUNED TO DELIVER 330 HP, DISTINCTIVE 19” ALLOY WHEELS FINISHED IN BLACK AND A LUXURIOUS INTERIOR. PRODUCTION IS LIMITED TO 500 EXAMPLES WORLDWIDE, AND UK SALES BEGIN IN SEPTEMBER.

The extra power is produced at 7,400 rpm (an additional 200 rpm vs the standard car), while the maximum torque remains unchanged at 370Nm at 4,750 rpm. This extra horsepower feeds directly through into the performance of the all-black midengined two--seater. Acceleration from 0-62 mph is improved by a tenth of a second to 5.1 seconds with the six-speed manual transmission, and to 5.0 seconds with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) respectively. With the Launch Control activated on the PDK Sport Chrono package option, acceleration improves further to 4.8 seconds. The top speed of the Cayman S Black Edition is just over one mph faster than that of the Cayman S – 173 mph with the manual transmission and 172 mph with PDK. In line with the Porsche Intelligent Performance principles, fuel consumption of the Cayman S Black Edition remains identical to that of the standard car, despite the increase in horsepower. The Cayman S Black Edition with manual transmission returns 29.7mpg Combined, and 30.1mpg Combined with PDK. Likewise, Co2 remains 223g/km for the manual and 221g/km for the PDK. Helping the dynamic performance of the Cayman S Black Edition further still are the lightweight Boxster Spyder wheels finished in black which, with SCENE 63

a diameter of 19 inches, are one inch bigger than the standard Cayman S wheels and also half an inch wider than the optional 19 inch wheels offered on the Cayman S. The tyre sizes fitted are 235/35 zR 19s on the front axle and 265/35 zR 19s on the rear axle. The Cayman S Black Edition features as standard Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and LED daytime running lights, together with automatic anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor. 64 SCENE

The front seats are trimmed in black partial leather with a Porsche crest on the headrests, as well as a Sport Design steering wheel. Climate control and cruise control add to the overall comfort. A further highlight of the Black Edition interior is the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) incorporating satellite navigation. This is combined with the universal audio interface that allows MP3 player connectivity and also Bluetooth mobile phone compatibility. The colour scheme of the Cayman S Black Edition is consistent throughout:

the dashboard trim is black as are the gear lever/selector trim and the dials in the instrument cluster. The door entry guards feature “Black Edition” lettering and are made of stainless steel; the glove compartment lid bears a badge highlighting the limited edition status. The Cayman S Black Edition costs from £50,420 and is on sale in the UK from September 2011. Customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

MY SCEnE GETS THE CHAnCE TO HAvE A BIT OF PILLOW TALK WITH BROMELY’S BED EXPERT, nEIL HEnMAn, OWnER OF JOHn HEnMAn BEDS. neil, you’ve inherited the name, so tell us a bit about the family business... My father John set up the company 42 years ago, selling quality beds and mattresses and I guess it was almost born into me. I’ve been working here most of my adult life – 29 years – and have taken over the family business. We specialise in top end quality beds and we’re not a discount setup. So you’ve been around a while, what’s the secret to the company’s success? Customer service is the key to our success; we treat our clients like proper people and not just whizzing them through the door. We spend a lot of time with people, finding out what they want and how to get the best out of beds etc. It’s quite a private subject, speaking to people about their sleeping habits, so it’s really important we find time to make sure customers are at ease and comfortable. That way we can understand what they want from a bed and in turn match them with the right product. You obviously know a lot about beds then? Working with them day in day out, it becomes a skill. We’ve got a small team of three staff here so everyone is experienced and knows about the industry. It’s important to find out what people want from a bed; hard, soft, natural filling or

manmade. And if they don’t know then we can explain the different options. People want different things then? oh yes definitely. These days people do a lot of research online and a lot have a rough idea what they’re looking for. You find as people get older they are more

particular about the bed they choose. I’ve had some people who come in who won’t even lie on the bed – but it’s so important to try it out. Some people just want something to lie on for seven or eight hours and they don’t care what it is but we really try to stress the importance of choosing a good quality bed.

work here full time and often take the paperwork home with me. When you own a family firm like this it becomes an obsession and you just have to put everything into it. If I have any time then I enjoy going to football matches. I take my 12-yearold son, we’re both football mad! And it has to be Palace. My wife and 14-yearold daughter are not so much into the football... If we go out together for dinner it’ll be somewhere for pizza, nice and easy.

What are your three top tips when buying a bed? 1) Spend as much money as you can afford – it will be worth it. 2) Listen when people are explaining things – the number of times someone will buy a bed because of the colour! Listen to the important features. 3) Buy from a reputable dealer – like us! So that’s enough about work, what do you do in your spare time? Spare time? I don’t have much of it. I
