The Spice Merchant - a true taste sensation

T

The Spice Merchant in Deeping St James has got the right recipe of personal service, relaxed surroundings and perfectly delicious Indian cuisine.

The presentation is beautiful and the menu has a balance of traditional dishes you would expect to see as well as an exciting array of new dishes to tempt you. The food ranges from all regions of India from the far north to Goa in the South. Head chef Suman Khatree and co owner Badri Khadka have vast experience cooking in many restaurants in London as well as Michelin Star Indian restaurants, all of which have excellent reputations for being innovative and ‘on trend’.

with chutney and sheek kebab, tandoori king prawn and chicken marinated in coriander and spices. Every element was obviously freshly prepared and cooked to order, the taste was amazing. It was one of those moments where you knew you should stop eating as you still had your main course to arrive, but everything was so tasty it was hard to stop!

It has to be one of the best Indian meals I have had, and I thought I had eaten in some of the best Indian restaurants. The food is cooked without and added colouring and all dishes are prepared in house with attention to detail and cooked to perfection. As we wanted to sample a selection of dishes on offer and also try something different, we asked Badri to create a varied selection of starters for us – with 8 veggie options and 10 meat dishes on offer, it was going to be a tough choice. ….and WOW, we were given a taste sensation! With beetroot delight, almond rolls and onion bhaji served

All in all, it was a lovely experience from start to finish. s a m t s i r h C SPICE UP YOUR

How about cooking a Christmas dinner with a twist this year? You’ll be surprised what a few spices can do!

I

t’s not too difficult to ‘spice up your life’ and no, I’m not talking about trying to buy tickets for The Spice Girls reunion tour (which was quite stressful actually!). I’m talking about just adding a little spice to your food - a touch of turmeric, a sprinkle of cinnamon and a cheeky pinch of chilli powder. In the east, spics have been used for centuries. Their main job was to preserve ingredients in hot temperatures as well enhance the flavour of food. Well, here in the west, we don’t have the hot climate but we can still use spices to enhance flavours. I love to mix things up and often use Indian spices to add flavour to what would usually be classed as a quintessential British meal even Christmas dinner! On Christmas day, I serve a dinner with all the trimmings but by adding a little spice here and there,

I often use Indian spices to add flavour to what would usually be classed as a quintessential British meal. I think it adds more Christmas cheer and I am all for that... I usually make a tandoori turkey with turmeric, and cumin roast potatoes, and I even add a few chilli flakes to my sprouts. And let’s not forget about the pudding! I have such a sweet tooth and love a good pudding. I like to use cinnamon, which I also use in my savoury dishes. Simply add a teaspoon of cinnamon to whipped cream - this wonderfully aromatic, subtle spice lifts the flavour of the cream making it taste almost warm. Give it a go, use my top tips for Christmas and spice up your life!

Tandoori Turkey Marinade 2 tbsp oil, 2 tbsp plain yogurt, 1 tsp sea salt (or to taste) 2 tsp paprika or tandoori powder, 1 tsp mild chilli powder, 2 tbsp lemon juice. Add all the ingredients in a bowl and mix. Apply to the turkey and cook as you would usually do.

Turmeric & Cumin Roast Potatoes Just add 2 tsp of cumin and 1 tsp turmeric to 1 kg of potatoes when you roast them. For more recipes and Parveen’s cook book, log onto www.ParveenTheSpiceQueen.com

10 tips for a healthy Christmas and kick start to 2019 from DSA Fitness

F

irst things first, I’m not saying, nor will I ever say, that you should totally de-construct your Christmas dinner and start again and replace all the tried and tested favourites with these ‘super foods’ or low-fat equivalents. Christmas dinner is about tradition and I one for, love tradition and I don’t think it should be meddled with! It’s a great once a year meal – yes, I said it ONCE A YEAR. What I do take exception to and where people can make things better is in the following areas:

1

The fact the month says December, does not mean a free licence to eat and drink with reckless abandon. Some people use December as the excuse and try and justify the over-eating / drinking by saying “I’ll be starting my new diet in January”. An approach like this can easily lead to starting January 1/2 - 1 stone heavier than you were at start of December. I know weight on scales is not everything, but I’m using this as an example to prove a point!

Try and do some sort of exercise each day, even if you can only manage 15 minutes.

2

If you are intending setting a New Year’s Resolution, think about this NOW and make it SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time Bound).

3

Make an emotional connection with your goal – why is this important to you and how will you feel when (not if) you achieve your goals?

4

The reason steps 2 and 3 are important is that once done, you can start to build the habits that will get you from point A to point B ready for the New Year, and the fact you are thinking about this makes it much more likely that you will make some smarter choices in December.

5 6

Embrace the fresh air and start going out for walks and bike rides with friends and family.

Try and do some sort of exercise each day, even if this means walking to the shops or walking to the bus stop – even if you can only manage 15 minutes, it’s still a little win and those little wins add up in the long term.

7

Don’t food shop when hungry as it’s all too easy to buy all sorts of stuff you don’t need and we don’t always make the best choices when we are hungry. What happens if there’s all sorts of biscuits, cakes and pastries in the house? Yep, you’ll eat them!

8

It’s inevitable you will have work do’s and meals out. Don’t stress about it, it’s part of the time of year. Remember you don’t have to say yes to all of them and you don’t need to drink at all of them. If you know you’re eating out at night, make provisions to have lighter intake during the day. December 2018 | E: info@scenepublishing.co.uk | T: 01778 382762

17

9

If you decide you’re going to keep off the alcohol for a few events, good on you! Just be wary of the sugar content in fizzy drinks.

10

Get enough sleep. Yes it’s a busy time of year but you should always aim for 7 hours sleep a night so make provisions to get this done. The above isn’t fool proof but hopefully gets you thinking a little bit. It’s a time to spend with loved ones and friends so enjoy this – you can do this without going overboard and without going on a ‘fad diet’. Start thinking about your goals for next year and make a head start, especially from a mindset perspective. Positive mindset and taking any action is more likely to lead to better decisions and focus – not only now, but in the longer term to achieve and maintain goals. Have an enjoyable, safe, fruitful and healthy(ish!) festive period with friends and families and I wish you all a prosperous 2019. Dave Get in touch! DSA Fitness, 07740 362324, dsaustin@sky.com

Right way! F E E D Y O U R B O DY T H E

Don’t take the feast or famine approach, make some simple dietary changes. Fiona tells us how.

I

n the course of the last month I’ve received some great questions about health and diet. So, I thought it would be helpful to address these issues to help you take control of your life to achieve the results you would like to see in the New Year, and many years thereafter. Whilst eating an ‘optimum nutrition’ diet will have the greatest effect upon your health, there’s no need for an ‘all or nothing’ approach. Doctors or healthcare professionals may provide some guidance on how to adapt your diet to improve conditions such as indigestion or diabetes, especially with the increasing interest in lifestyle medicine, but if you want to take greater control of your own health and learn how to be your own ‘food doctor’ then there are simple dietary changes that need to be made. For over fifty years removing fat from our diets has become a real buzzword. Dietary recommendations to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease have focused on reducing saturated fat intake. But in reality, not all fats are bad: eating more fish and foods rich in polyunsaturated fats, such as nuts, and mono-unsaturated fats, such as olive oil or avocado, is actually linked with reduced cardiovascular risk. Saturated fats and trans fats make cell membranes

rigid, therefore reducing the elasticity of artery walls and making them more at risk of damage. So, finding the right balance with what you eat is the goal. If you regularly eat a food high in fat, consider the types of fat it contains. Including foods that contain healthy saturated fat will help to give the right nutrition and feed your body effectively. Recent research has found that it makes sense to include eggs, fresh meat, and organic dairy foods. Foods to limit and watch out for containing saturated fat are cured and smoked meats. Confectionary such as cakes, pastries, biscuits, ice cream and chocolate are cheap and easy to find but are the hardest items to limit. They also have additional health risks associated with them.

Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food” Greek physician Hippocrates the father of Western medicine A great resource to help give the right guidance to improve your diet is a book entitled, ’Food for Health’ by Sara Kirkham available in January 2019 from Need2Know Books. Visit www.need2knowbooks. co.uk to learn more. Wishing you all an incredible Christmas and New Year, thank you for reading my articles over the past year

Well-being DO WONDERS FOR YOUR

To help battle the season of runny noses and sluggishness, here is a guide to how vitamins and minerals can help to protect and stimulate your body, keeping you healthy and energised this winter.

With a healthy balanced diet, you can achieve your recommended daily allowance of vitamins, however a little help along the way can do wonders for your well-being. Here’s how:

Vitamin A - aids your body’s natural defence against illness and infection

Vitamin C - acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals

Vitamin B6 – helps to form haemoglobin, the substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body and allows the body to use and 22/11/2018 08:49 store energy from protein and carbohydrates in food

Vitamin E - helps to maintain healthy skin and eyes, SceneDec18_Serenity_FOR_APPROVAL.pdf and strengthen the body’s natural defence against illness and infection

New housing developments in Oakham and Spalding

L

ocal builders Larkfleet Homes and Allison Homes have a range of developments across the Scene’s publishing area. Two of the most recent to be launched are at opposite edges of our ‘territory’. At the western end of the Scene’s circulation area, Larkfleet Homes is offering a new range of contemporary styled, energyefficient homes at Farriers Reach in Oakham. All of them are fitted with solar panels to generate electricity from sunlight, cutting carbon emissions and owners’ power bills! There are two, three, four and five-bedroom properties to choose from on this edge-of-town site within the Oakham Heights ‘urban extension’. In addition to new housing, the plans include parks and open spaces, children’s play areas, allotments and a new local centre. There will also be enhancements to the ecology of Barleythorpe Brook which runs through the site, and improved transport links

with new cycle, footpath and bus routes. Meanwhile, right over on the eastern edge of the scheme’s area, there are new houses being built in the popular village of Pinchbeck on the outskirts of Spalding. Allison Homes has chosen this setting for its Pinchbeck Fields development of modern new homes with traditional styling and craftsmanship. Pinchbeck Fields offers two, three, four and five-bedroom homes, including two-bedroom bungalows and four-bedroom chalet bungalows, in a mix of nineteen different property types. They are all centred around an attractive open space, with a pond and outside leisure and

recreational areas. Traditionally, bungalows have been associated with older people and some of those at Pinchbeck Fields would certainly suit discerning mature buyers looking for a quality home. But there are also bungalows at Pinchbeck Fields designed with families in mind. Apparently, psychologists say that communication and family life benefit from everyone living on the same level!

The housing mix at Pinchbeck Fields also includes a number of shared-ownership properties aimed at first-time buyers where you buy part of the house and rent the rest until you can afford to buy it. Pinchbeck Fields is therefore ideal whether you want a starter home, a family house or somewhere to retire in comfort. It offers all the relaxing aspects of village life with the benefits of its close proximity to Spalding, some of the best schools in Lincolnshire, and good transport links by road and rail to nearby Peterborough. In both Oakham and Spalding, all the new homes come with a ten-year insurance-backed guarantee to give buyers complete peace of mind about their new purchase. www.larkfleethomes.co.uk

Stay merry, not miserable in the run up to Christmas A must read - consumer advice from Safe Local Trades ‘Tis the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit. With many of us starting the Christmas shopping earlier, there is a fair chance that shop purchases and online orders are beginning to pile up. So, with gifts galore adding to the decorations, tree, food and drink - December is a time when many of us let our guard down, among the excitement leading up to the big day. For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage are rich pickings which can turn your Christmas from being merry into miserable! Equally, flaws in home security while out and about visiting friends and family are a beacon to thieves – so always remember to check your alarm and never

For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree and car boots full of shopping are rich pickings! leave doors, windows or garages unlocked. Some tips for a safe and happy festive season: • Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or in the back seat of the car. • Shorter days mean longer time for thieves to be in operation – always lock your car and front door when entering your home. • Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family. • It may be an idea to fit some

motion detector security lighting – it won’t just be carol singers who come calling. • Keep your personal data safe – and securely dispose of receipts. • If you are expecting parcels or deliveries whilst you are away from home, try and arrange for them to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden by the bins! • If buying bikes and / or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode. • If using outdoor festive lighting, ensure cables aren’t passed through windows, leaving enough of a gap for burglars to make use of. • Away over Christmas? Plan ahead. If you’re going away at Christmas be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Arrange for a neighbour to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is home. Do not to leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like “we’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays” or post your plans on social media. For any home security improvements, we have locksmiths, alarm and CCTV installers, electricians and many other traders who can help. Visit www.safelocaltrades.com or call free on 0800 014 1832.

Glad Rags Ready GET YOUR

Christmas might bring some new stain and clothing dilemmas, but Peters’ Cleaners is on hand to help.

Whoops! Enjoy your Christmas dinner and don’t panic if you drop a bit of Christmas pudding! It is a complex stain to shift due to its wide range of ingredients so if you get it on your tablecloth or clothing, DO NOT RUB as this can set the stain in and damage the fibres of the fabric resulting in permanent damage. Dry cleaning is the most effective method of removing grease or fat so take treasured items to a professional. To treat at home use a special stain remover, although this may not be as effective on grease. Before treating any mark or stain on your cloths or fabrics check the care label. If in any doubt, seek professional advice. It is not advisable to apply water to dry clean only fabrics as water may shrink, distort and discolour some fabrics.

Get ready to party! Time to inspect those party clothes. Don’t be caught short and discover food stains on your Dinner Jacket or Evening Dress the day of your do – get them cleaned and pressed now. Steam out the creases Don’t damage delicate party outfits by ironing them, hang them in your bathroom or shower room for a couple of days and let the steam from the shower or bath encourage the creases to fall out.

Ask Peters’ Cleaners Q - Why will some cleaners not clean my beaded dress? A - Beads can be made of many different materials including plastic and glass. Dry cleaning exposes the item to heat so beads may melt and P symbol meaning it is suitable disappear, even though the item has a beads and sequins on glue ers manufactur for dry cleaning. Some which can disintegrate during dry cleaning. Poorly secured cotton can come undone meaning beads or sequins fall off. If beads or sequins are attached as a ‘string’ the whole row can come off. A professional cleaner will know how best to clean the item and be able to give advice.

This may not work for all items, but it is inexpensive, easy and unlikely to cause any damage. If you are still not happy with the appearance of your clothes, take them to be professionally pressed. Something different We love this rather large penguin that has been cleaned up ready for Christmas! National Recognition for Will and Probate Services at the British Wills and Probate Awards

T

he British Wills and Probate Awards awards are the Oscars of our industry and we were delighted to be nominated alongside national names such as the Co-op Legal Services and Irwin Mitchell Solicitors. We had been entered in three categories and made the final three in one. At a glitzy awards ceremony at Ardencote Hall near Coventry, Kloë Davis, our probate team leader and Kate Jacobs, our development manager, were on hand to pick up our highly commended award as we came a close second to a national firm of solicitors.

To be recognised on a national stage, especially when the recognition came in the wake of being finalists at the National Entrepreneurs Awards, is humbling. Our ambition has always been for Will and Probate Services to be one of the best known and most respected legal brands in the country. Speaking of the event Kloë said “It was a fantastic night. To be amongst the most influential people in our industry was an affirmation of just how far we have come and gives me huge confidence in our vision for Will and Probate Services”. Coming so close to bringing

home the trophies only increases our determination to be there next year and to go one better. If you would like to speak to Will and Probate Services, a local firm making an impact on a national stage, about any aspect pf your planning give us a call on 01778 382723 and book your initial consultation today.

Deeping history

K

ing George III had been Kings of the independent counties of Great Britain and Ireland since 25th October 1760 and now it was the last days of the 1700s and the beginning of the 1800s. However, today - 1st January 1801 - the two countries became one as the King of the United Kingdom, of Great Britain and Ireland took formal control– a commitment he would hold until his death in 1820.

We all know what can happen over Christmas and the New Year now – but what was it like around 1800 with the communities of the Deepings and the water of the Welland? In the late 18th century the Welland had been ‘troublesome’ with situations in 1774 and 1794 coping with the needs for ‘improved conditions’. None-the-less the Welland gave way again in 1798. This led to the Enclosure Act of 1801 that planned that the land was to be drained, divided and allotted in the common Deeping fenland places – with Market Deeping and

Words by Brian Jones Deeping St James Common becoming two of the sites. Unfortunately, the plan didn’t work and was still ‘failing’ way into the future! While all of this was happening, other things were taking place. For instance - on 12th January 1791 a local posting told Market Deeping that: Bull Inn, Market Deeping. Assembly – same Time and Place – Room provided for Cards. A new landlord has entered upon this inn. During 1790 the late landlord Mr. William Plummer, Publican and Maltster, having died’. By 1799 the Bull was not the only Brewery as the following notice showed: John Voken, after thanking his numerous friends for their liberal encouragement of his Liquer Trade, takes the liberty of acquainting them that he has opened a Common Brewery, where they will be supplied with an article which he trusts will prove good and sound. Ale being the most serviceable beverage to all useful parts of mankind, they may depend on being served with that which is the most truly wholesome.

Welland waters in the late 18th century There were also very different happenings as well such as when a 13 year old boy from Deeping St. James was remanded in prison and ordered to be publicly whipped in the town of Market Deeping in 1805 – for stealing a silver watch. The whipping post stood on the opposite side to the New Inn and was also used in connection with the weighing of goods brought barge to the market – hogsheads of sugar being quite common! On a very different story – that of the French Revolution that had ‘erupted’ in 1789. Britain had a concern of invasion by Napoleon and Market Deeping called a meeting regarding National Defence. It met at the Bull and £89 5s was subscribed for defence. On June 11th 1802 it was reported that the new Ness Troop of Yeoman Cavalry met for their last time and afterwards received a farewell dinner from their Captain, Sir John Trollope, who entertained them at Market Deeping in a most handsome manner – on the same occasion the Ness Troop unanimously voted an elegant silver cup for Sir John!

The Market Deeping / Deeping St James bridge constructed in 1691 and ‘updated’ in the early 1800’s

he Liberty Partnership Mission Statement states: “We are driven by traditional values based on outstanding client service, building long term relationships, delivering highly qualified advice and essentially from the first point of contact through to ongoing service, putting our clients mind at ease.” Feedback from our clients allows us to reflect on this simple statement and this example suggests we’re on track: What were the circumstances that caused you to look for an adviser? to the monies I had accrued in the event of my death and what could be done to ‘ring fence’ those monies. How did your adviser help you? He explained thoroughly what my dependants would, and more importantly would not, receive from my pensions. After much consultation and weighing up the pros and cons of coming out of the final salary pensions, I took the decision to move those monies into an investment fund, and in doing so, take the tax-free lump sum that was available. Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for? I am in the process of receiving my tax-free lump sums and it’s still early days for the investment fund,

however everything has gone very smoothly and I’ve no reason to believe it won’t continue to do so. What could they have done better? In all honesty I do not believe I could have received any better help and advice than that offered to me by the adviser - extremely RATING thorough and clear. Peterborough Technical education in Peterborough during the early to mid-1900s

efore 1945 education in the administrative county of the Soke of Peterborough (established in 1888) was in the hands of two local authorities – the Soke of Peterborough County Council (responsible for elementary education in rural areas and for higher education in the urban and rural areas) and Peterborough City Council (responsible for elementary education only, in the city area).

Technical education in Peterborough between 1903 – 1945 indicated more ups and downs than in other industrial centres with only 0.9% of students taking advantage of technical education. Of note is that in 1909 H M Inspectors (Ministry of Education) reported that ‘The whole question of accommodation requires the urgent consideration of the Committee.’ In 1914 commercial classes

On the 1st April 1945 the Peterborough Joint Education Board took over from both the Soke and City authorities. At that time the Joint Education Board was the only education authority of its kind in the country. Its first Chairman was Colonel A Mellows MA TD who was accidentally killed in 1948. He was succeeded by Alderman John Mansfield JP whose leadership ensured the development of the Technical College (now the Regional College).

A 1929 report by H M Inspectors detailed that out of the 205 students of all ages enrolled in technical education.…’The provision of evening industrial instruction in Peterborough is at present much inferior to that in other even less populated centres throughout England. The two essential reforms are the organisation of the instruction of properly graded and wellbalanced group courses and the development of a much closer relationship between the work of the school and the industries from which most often students are drawn.’ A ‘temporary’ Technical College was introduced in 1946 (prefabricated buildings located in Garton End Road), and Mr C Vinten Fenton MSc was appointed Principal of Peterborough Technical College. The first Ordinary National Certificates were awarded to students in 1946-7. The following year saw

The temporary premises did not have enough facilities for practical instruction so local engineering firms stepped in, as did Oundle School and Rugby College of Technology. With their help and co-operation this enabled the first Higher National Certificates (HNC) to be gained in 1949. When the Education Act 1944 was introduced it required a development plan for further education by every local authority. The so-called Peterborough Plan was the first in the country to be approved by the Ministry of Education. The plan provided for the development of Glinton Village College (opened in 1949) and for a permanent Technical College. The Joint Education Board acquired additional land in Eastfield Road for the building of a new and permanent Technical College to supplement the 12 acres it owned already. The design submitted by architect David Jenkin with associates Peter Burberry, Robert Henley and Peter Stewart was approved and structural consultants Ove Arupe & Partners were employed along with quantity surveyors Davis Belfield & Everest. Work started in May 1949.

The official opening of the £75,000 second phase took place on 6 April 1959 by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Education - Sir Edward Boyle MP. Psychotastic’s first production proves to be a big hit! With a standing ovation, KES was a huge success in Stamford recently, and there are big plans on the horizon.

S

teven and Zoe’s new venture proved a big hit with people from all over the country who travelled to support their first production. Numerous local businesses supported the souvenir programme and with ticket sales, a donation of £1500 towards The Phoebe Research Fund was made. Overwhelmed with support and fabulous feedback, they want to carry on the success next year with another well-known play. The Stamford Corn Exchange have been an integral part of this and the staff have been exceptional and could not have been more supportive. Director David Crowley and young Billy Casper played by

Daniel Maley, were extremely happy with the reaction from the audience and sponsors. Zoe went on to say “Seeing the audience give both Steven and Daniel a standing ovation was amazing, I didn’t expect that, and we are so excited at what we can do next time. It was my first time producing a theatre show and I really enjoyed seeing it come together. They worked so hard during rehearsals, and I am proud to be part it.” Steven commented “From an actor’s point of view, to play 10 characters in one show is a dream come true, especially playing alongside an extremely talented young actor.” Steven and Zoe aim to bring

more quality productions to the area, and will once again be donating 25% towards The Phoebe Research Fund. For more information contact Zoe Crowson Email info@ psychotasticproductions.co.uk Photography Lee Hellwing

Festive F ilms!

Wondering which Christmas films to feast on this year? Richard gives us his top picks!

C

hristmas is the best time of year for adults and children alike; not only is it totally acceptable to play Christmas songs after Bonfire Night, but you can totally binge on all of those old classic films! Now, with so many to choose from, it’s always the beginning of an argument when it comes to the BEST Christmas film (obviously it’s Die Hard!) but let me give you some ideas of what to watch this festive season: Santa Claus The Movie: Dudley Moore as Patch, an elf on a mission to show Santa what a mistake he made by sacking him, and David Huddleston as the first ever Santa I saw trying to show him he still cares and misses him. With John Lithgow as the conniving BZ, this is a classic amongst classics.

Elf: Do I really need to say anything about this film? Apart from it being a real feel good, funny and entertaining delight,

the score music is utterly enthralling and, I’ll be honest here, brings a bit of a tear to my eye at the end. That climbing pitch right to the crescendo of the music... just wow! Home Alone: This is a given! Child gets left behind to fend off 2 of the most hilarious criminals the world has ever seen! Cue assaults that would kill any normal person, as well as an assault on your stomach through pure laughter! National Lampoons Christmas Vacation: Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold just gets me every year! This is an hilarious film, full of clichés and one liners that have stayed with me for the past 25 years. You just cannot beat this film!

The Polar Express: My second favourite Christmas film, this has everything from a magnificent score, excellent graphics and animation, a strong, heartwarming story and some exciting,

exhilarating action sequences. Plus, it has Tom Hanks and THAT bell... Jingle All The Way: Arnie as a self-centred Dad whose only task is to get a Turbo Man. With the stress of last minute shopping on Christmas Eve, you can imagine the hilarity of what’s to come! With pithy one liners, action and surprises, this is a fantastic film for all the family to enjoy. Die Hard: The best Christmas film...EVER. Not even a contest! Now I know there will be people reading this and seething that I have forgotten this film or that film, and that’s fair. So, I would welcome anyone else’s thoughts on their own top list for Christmas Films. Tweet us @TheFTVShow.

Richard S hosts the Film & TV Show on Hereward Radio and the show is in podcast form on iTunes, Stitcher and Podbean.

Showcasing our cultural community New exhibition explores immigration and integration through art

A

new exhibition at Peterborough Museum explores themes of immigration and integration through traditional textile pieces created by local women from various communities in the city. ‘The Fabric of Society’ project, funded by Arts Council England, brings Peterborough women together to create, weave and sew individual and collective pieces from their own traditional fabrics, using techniques from their individual cultures to celebrate the vibrant diversity of Peterborough and the way communities have integrated over the years. The artwork explores the different journeys of immigration

and integration, both physical and emotional, that the participants have experienced throughout their lives. Nationalities already represented include Lithuania, Portugal, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, England and Angola. Sheena Carman, Arts Programme Manager at Vivacity, spoke about what drove the exhibition’s creation: “The use of sewing techniques is an integral source of pride for so many cultures and communities around the world. Our Fabric of Society exhibition seeks to show how proud we are to have so many of these different cultures and communities present in Peterborough; bringing them together to meet, share and create.”

The artwork is set to grow over the coming weeks, with a number of opportunities to contribute through different workshops as well as a community piece of artwork being created by visitors. New communities are also being invited to contribute once the exhibition is open. www.vivacity.org
