THIS
O
h no! Is it goodbye to the t-shirts and dresses and hello to thick tights and jeans? Some of us cannot wait for those cosy evenings in front of the fire and wrapping up in fleeces when going for a country walk – I for one, am not one of those. I am in love with sunshine and long, light evenings, but I will grudgingly have to drag out my woolies. For those that are looking forward to it, we have some superb autumn home accessories to enhance and warm up any home. Plus of course it is the month of Halloween and there are many events locally you can attend as well as the Peterborough Firework Fiesta on the 3rd November – The Scene has two family tickets to give away, see page 51. We went along to the Cock Inn to taste some of the new dishes on offer at this newly renovated pub in Werrington. It is really worth a visit as it is fabulous value for money and the food is absolutely delicious. We have a review on a new hair care product called Monat and also an update on a stunning bridal boutique that has just opened in Stamford, as well as all your favourite features including local history and what’s on. Wrap up and have a wonderful October!

fter two years of running the local Newsagents and Convenience Store in the heart of Werrington Village, Marie and Mitch (proprietors) came to the decision to change the premises into what now has become the ‘hub of the community’. At Last Tearooms grand opening was the 1st March 2017. It now seats 22 in its 1940s Great Britain themed front main room in the styles and nostalgia of a bygone era with a modern-day retro twist. Follow the yellow brick road to the Green Room and step into a 1950’s American Diner and fully licensed bar where you can find seating for a further 16 people. With the emphasis on a completely relaxed atmosphere, this family run business is a real home from home.

Review by Dee Kennedy sprinkles - a creamy chocolaty treat! For dessert, the traditional Knickerbocker Glory with a twist of Baileys for the adult in me! This consisted of fresh strawberries, chocolate and strawberry ice cream, meringue pieces, fresh cream and a chocolate flake and like all good desserts, a cherry on top! (£4.99)
The styles and nostalgia of a bygone era with a modernday retro twist At Last specialise in their delicious High Tea at £27.90 For two. They also serve a Full English Breakfast menu from 8am until 12 noon Monday to Saturday. A little gem in Werrington, and certainly worth a visit, they are currently refurbishing the outside space for events, so watch this space!
I enjoyed the 8oz Cheeseburger accompanied by a small salad and crisps (£6.80). A succulent beef burger, served with gherkin pinned to the top of the bun. Amazing taste, seasoned well and very filling! I also tried the chocolate Ice Cream Milkshake (£3.25) complete with chocolate syrup, fresh cream and

September’s Scene included a write up about the incredible transformation of the well-known local hostelry the Cock Inn, Werrington. This month, we sampled some of the delicious food on offer.
T
his sympathetically restored, Grade ll listed building has character and charisma. It blends the old with the new beautifully, with a fresh, modern feel. The welcome is warm and friendly and the smiling staff make you feel right at home. Everything on the menu is cooked fresh to order and there are varied dishes to suit tastes and moods. Their speciality is the tantalising tapas selection and sharing platters – this includes deep fried halloumi, battered pork belly,
potatas bravas, chorizo, garlic mushrooms, pulled chicken and falafel, as well as meat, cheese or mixed sharing platters. You can include additional sides such as fries, humus and their superb home-made jalapeno slaw.
The welcome is warm and friendly and the smiling staff make you feel right at home.
If tapas is not your thing, or you fancy a dish all to yourself, then there are some succulent home made burgers on offer. The Cock Inn burger is of course their very own recipe and is served with fries and salad, plus there is the deliciously superb chorizo burger, that really is the perfect meal for the more than peckish. If you have any room, the desserts are a perfect finale! Nutella cheesecake, chocolate cookie stack and sticky toffee pudding – what’s not to love! Tapas prices start from £4.95 each – however these really are decent

It’s that time of year… With the seasons changing, many people experience a significant change in mood. Could it be SAD?
S
easonal affective disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that people experience at a particular time of year or during a particular season. It is a recognised mental health disorder. Most of us are affected by the change in seasons, however, if you experience SAD, the change in seasons will have a much greater effect on your mood and energy levels, and lead to symptoms of depression that may have a significant impact on your day-today life. SAD has many different symptoms. You do not need all of them to be experiencing SAD. If a doctor gives you a diagnosis of SAD, it is likely to be because you have been experiencing a number of these symptoms in the same season for at least two or three years: • Lack of energy for everyday tasks, such as studying or going to work
Get outdoors around midday, on bright days, forego the sunglasses, or reflect light within the home with pale colours.
• Lack of concentration
• Sleeping for longer than usual or not being able to get to sleep • Feeling low, tearful, guilty, sometimes feeling hopeless • Mood swings • Being more prone to illness – some people with SAD may have a lowered immune system during the winter How can I help myself cope with SAD? Many people with SAD develop self-help strategies that enable
them to manage the condition themselves, either on their own or with other treatment. You may find these suggestions helpful: Make the most of natural light - We know that being outdoors throughout the winter doesn’t cure SAD because people who work outside also experience SAD symptoms. However, it is still worth taking the opportunity to be exposed to natural light when possible. Small changes – like going outdoors around midday or on bright days, wearing sunglasses a bit less (if it is safe to do so) and having pale colours within the home to reflect light – can all be useful. Exercise and eat well - Try to keep physically active during the winter. While you may not feel like it at the time, physical activity can be very effective in lifting your mood and increasing your energy levels. Consider using a light box – This is a specialist device containing very bright fluorescent tubes that has been found to be an effective treatment for SAD because it increases your exposure to light during the winter months. Many people find that it is useful to use one every day but it is best to experiment to find a routine that works for you. Occasionally people report side effects from using a light box, such as headaches, irritability or, in very rare cases, nausea. Changing your position may help but if problems persist, you should stop using it. www.mind.org.uk

Your body transformation is not just for Christmas……
A
fter yo yo dieting for years, busy working Mum Lisa Weston was struggling to maintain a healthy weight and was gaining weight year on year. After giving birth to her first child, the stubborn weight would simply not budge. Despite doing all she could to improve her nutrition, eating sensibly and regularly exercising,
incorporating a simple convenient system of nutrition products into my daily diet. I noticed a difference immediately. Within 3 days I was sleeping through the night, within a week my bloated tummy was no more and over a period of 8 weeks I lost a whopping 10kg - all without a diet! I haven’t felt this energised since I was a teenager and I even
Within 3 days I was sleeping through the night, within a week my bloated tummy was no more and over a period of 8 weeks I lost a whopping 10kg Lisa could still not shift her weight. She was then introduced to the concept of nutritional cleansing and lost 10kgs in just two months. “The concept of nutritional cleansing is that you start to feed your body with superfood balanced nutrition so it starts to perform at its best. When combined with a healthy balanced diet, the results for weight loss are incredible. It was September 2017, and like anybody else, I was thinking ahead… the chance of wearing that size 10 bikini had already passed so I was focused on feeling and looking good in my Christmas party dress! A friend introduced me to Isagenix and the concept of nutritional cleansing by
fitted into my Christmas party dress! I transformed my body and my lifestyle with ease and the best part is, that change is for good. Most people struggle with modern diet and take their nutrition and health for granted, not realising the massive impact this has on their overall wellbeing. Figures from the World Health Organisation show that more than 42% of the global population is overweight. We have a culture of consuming convenience foods which are over processed and provide us with high calories and few of the nutrients we need. Add that to a stressful lifestyle
and we have a recipe for disaster. The concept of nutritional cleansing with Isagenix is that we combine no compromise quality ingredients with perfectly balanced nutrition in a convenient form to suit all ages and lifestyles, making nutrition and healthy living easy for immediate and lasting results.” Lisa is passionate about helping as many people as possible to take control of their health and enjoy a balanced lifestyle so they can enjoy the food they love! She offers one-2-one coaching, online support groups and monthly Wellness Labs at various locations in the Peterborough area. e r u C n a h T PREVENTION IS BETTER
With colder days upon us and the heating being switched on, it’s even more important to look after your skin
W
e all know the saying ‘prevention is better than cure’ so what can we do to keep our skin, the largest, living, breathing organ of our body, healthy, protected and moisturised? Cellular cleansing is by far the healthiest way to eliminate all those toxins and
chemicals that are absorbed into the body, not only by food, but also by all the pollution in the air. The build up of these toxins and chemicals start to overload the system, however, we can help our skin by understanding the ingredients labelled on the back of our products.
Knowing the source of ingredients will also act as a deterrent to topically applying them and will ring warning bells to avoid them at all cost.
So here are the top 2 ‘scary avoid at all costs’ ingredients: 1. Parabens - a synthetic preservative that enhances the shelf life of a product for up to seven years and mimics oestrogen, being linked to breast and ovarian cancer. Parabens will be listed at the bottom of the ingredient list (such as methylparaben or propylparaben). My advice would be to go to your bathroom cabinet, look at all the ingredients in your products and if you find any containing parabens, throw them in the bin as they are to be avoided at all cost. 2. Mineral oil - a by-product from the petro-chemical industry, wraps around your skin like clingfilm and is the no. 2 ageing ingredient for your skin, after the sun. Mineral oil is molecularly too large for the skin to absorb – it’s like fat and doesn’t have a function, but acts as a barrier, stopping your skin from naturally detoxifying. There are many different words used to describe mineral oil, such as petroleum, liquid paraffin and paraffinumliquidum and is usually high up on the ingredient list. The good news is, you do get to make a choice - so what will it be ‘trick or treat’? Have a wonderful October

had not heard of Monat Products until I had the chance to go along to a brief meeting about them with Julian Bright of Bright Insight, and Louise Moore of Beauty by Louise.

Monat Hair Product Review by Dee Kennedy
the Monat Intense Repair Shampoo and Conditioner. The products are made from natural ingredients, hence the name Monat (Modern Nature).
Included in the Intense Repair Products are: REJUVENIQE® A blend of 13+ Natural Plant and Essential Oils rich in omega fatty acids, antioxidants and nutrients highly compatible with the skin and hair. PROCATALINE™ Featuring Pea Extract, this high-tech blend supports healthy, younger-looking hair by helping to protect your tresses from UV damage and environmental factors. CAPIXYL™ An emollient blend that helps to protect the scalp, strengthen and thicken hair while supporting natural growth. CRODASORB™ A powerful ingredient that helps protect against the sun’s damaging UV rays, preserving hair’s natural pigmentation and keeping strands protected and strong.
Definitely worth that little extra - they last longer and your hair will thank you! The Intense repair has a peppermint base, which you can tell from both the smell and the fresh feel whilst using the product. I used it for 4 weeks, and noticed a difference after just 1. My hair was sleeker, felt denser, and looked shinier and healthier.
Monat products are more expensive than the buyone-get-one-free offers in most supermarkets, but definitely worth that little extra as they last longer and your hair will thank you! There are of course other products available for different hair types. To enquire about Monat hair products contact Julian or Louise and begin your hair transformation. Insight DESIGNER
The opening of the Anna Couture Brides bridal boutique was met with great celebration from friends, family and fans of talented owner/ designer, Anna D'Amato.
A
nna, a costume design graduate with years of experience in film and TV, opened her first boutique on Cheyne Lane in Stamford just 18 months ago, building a sound reputation amongst the area’s styleconscious ladies for being the go-to destination for gorgeous gowns, vintage pieces and couture corsetry. A handful of thoughtfully selected wedding dresses were sold in the boutique too, including a number from Chanticleer, a British bridalwear designer and manufacturer very much
influenced by historical dress design, much like Anna’s own designs. When the timely opportunity arose for Anna to buy the Chanticleer label, she did so without hesitation. With the need for more space, Anna went on the hunt for bigger premises, discovering a gorgeous property opposite The George Hotel on High Street, St Martins; surrounded by the town’s celebrated architecture, it’s a fitting location for a design house which draws so much inspiration from centuries of design. Anna and her team of highlyskilled seamstresses are already hard at work on their first Chanticleer capsule collection; finding inspiration everywhere, Anna’s designs are influenced by designers worldwide, rather than what is trendy here. The collection promises individuality, chic silhouettes, with urban and theatrical touches. Anna has a natural eye for what looks right, and is able to understand a bride’s vision for their wedding dress. With work rooms and acres of fabric on the premises, Anna and her team are able to offer brides an exciting couture experience, bringing a dress design to life in front of you, or altering a gown to fit you
perfectly. With an infectiously warm and genuine demeanour, and a thoughtful and honest approach, you will walk away from The House of Anna Couture, feeling confident that your needs and wants will be met, and that your dress will have you feeling like a leading lady.

Championing consumers for a decade Peterborough’s Safe Local Trades celebrate 10 years in business
F
or the past 10 years, the Safe Local Trades online service has been providing thousands of customers within the PE area with easy access to reliable and reputable tradespeople. 1st October 2018 sees the business set up by SLT director Eileen Le Voi celebrate its official 10th anniversary as a live service – having grown from a handful of members locally in 2008 to now having over 200 across 68 different trades with over 13,000 reviews on the website. Consumer confidence and working tirelessly to force out rogue and cowboy traders across the Peterborough area, Safe Local Trades and Eileen have received a number of awards for the community-focussed service over the years. Among those members to reap the benefits of being a SLT member is Tony Bogusz from Style Home Improvements. He said: “Safe Local Trades has been a vital building block for our company over the last 10 years. We have found it helps reassure customers that we are a reputable,
extremely proud of what we have achieved, and look forward to going from strength to strength.” trustworthy company, and with the help of reviews and photos, customers can decide if we are the company for them before contacting us.” To celebrate the achievements so far, and looking ahead to the ongoing future success of the service, a number of members who share 10 years of Safe Local Trades membership are pictured here with Eileen. Eileen said: “The success of Safe Local Trades is due in the main to the fantastic members we have on board, all reliable, professional and recommended to offer customers peace of mind. “As well as our work with the trades, much effort is placed on safeguarding the more vulnerable people in our communities, with working with the relevant agencies to offer advice on avoiding rogue traders, reporting doorstep crime and how to get involved with your local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.” She added: “It is hard to believe that SLT is 10 years old, and I am
And the story doesn’t end there … Since Safe Local Trades was established in 2008, Eileen has been asked for recommendations on dozens of different services outside the remit of tradespeople and Safe Local Services was launched in December 2017. “The aim is again to provide consumers with vetted professionals – ranging from accountants to dentists, beauty therapists to a wide range of business support services - by offering peace of mind when instructing a service. “Each service has been vetted, has their own profile, and offers consumers the chance to leave their own feedback and reviews. Customers have told us over the past 10 years that they trust and rely on our recommendations.” To access any local recommended trades and services, visit www. safelocaltrades.com / www. safelocalservices.com or call us on 01733 530019.

Some top tips from Peters’ Cleaners for October find a moth hole in an expensive item of clothing, you may want to consider having the item invisibly repaired which involves re-weaving the fabric. Light it up! We love this lampshade which is similar to a pair we cleaned last month. They came in dirty and were returned fresh and clean!
We are coming to the end of berry season and if you have juice on any items, here are some top tips for removing a raspberry stain:
1
Use an Oxy powder. Dilute some in water and soak prior to washing. Be careful about washing if the stain has not ‘moved’ as washing it could make it ‘set in’.
2
For items unsuitable for a washing machine (e.g. upholstery), spray the raspberry stain with white vinegar then lightly dab with a cloth. Keep repeating until the stain has gone. Before using vinegar, be sure to test for colour loss on an area of the fabric that is not visible (such as under the seat). Before treating any stain on your clothes or fabrics, please check the care label. Bleaches and other chemicals can shrink, distort and discolour some fabrics, as can water. If in any doubt, seek professional advice.
Keep moths at bay Take advantage of the fresh October breeze and sun to air all your natural fabrics, especially woollen sweaters, wool based suits, silks and cashmere - the favourites of moths. Moths love dark (and dirty) clothes so regularly giving them an airing and ensuring they are clean gives you a better chance of avoiding moth holes this winter. If you do
Ask Peters’ Cleaners Q - Why do I find it hard to find someone that cleans suede? A - Suede clothing is likely to be made from the skins of more than one animal. Once the item has been assembled it is coloured, which is commonly done by spraying. Like humans, the oil content of skin in animals varies meaning when it is cleaned it loses colour at different rates so the item can appear patchy. To clean effectively, a dry cleaner needs specialist equipment and solutions which is why we send our items away.

The perfect meal, with a personal touch Rob Devonshire, Head Chef at Clayburn Court Care Home in Peterborough has won the prestigious Chef of the Year competition.
R
ob defeated seven fellow chefs in a special cook-off at the University of Birmingham. Michelin star chef Tom Shepherd judged the entries and said how impressed he was with the overall standard. “This has really opened my eyes into what care homes provide for their residents, and how difficult this was for me to pick a winner. As far as I am concerned, they were all winners, but I have to say Rob’s rack of lamb was cooked to perfection and his beautiful French pudding, Mille-Feuille, complimented it perfectly. Congratulations to Rob. Anchor’s Clayburn Court care home in Peterborough take
great pride in the range of high quality, seasonally focused and nutritionally balanced meals Rob makes available to residents on a daily basis. He is committed to making mealtimes a sociable and pleasurable part of the day and this award is testament to that philosophy. The meals are created, not just with a deep understanding of each resident’s specific needs, but with an awareness of the important personal role food plays in all our lives. After all, we all know that when it comes to food, individual tastes and preferences are everything. That’s why at Clayburn Court the catering team get out of the kitchen and speak
to the people they cook for every day, finding out about their likes and dislikes and discovering more about the people they cook for. We all have strong memories associated with certain recipes, foods or specific meals and for Clayburn Court care home, it’s vital that the food they serve reflects this.

Cashing in on Grief
37
If your will was made through the bank, here’s why you should consider updating it
A
recent report from the Daily Mail shows that grieving families face paying thousands of pounds to banks because their loved ones were sold rip-off wills. Up to 1.5million customers are believed to have signed up for the service in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Wills were typically offered for as little as £75, or even free. However, as a condition of the low cost, the banks appointed themselves as executor – and can grab up to 2.5% from an estate in legal fees. The inheritors of £500,000 of wealth risk paying out £12,500 – around five times the typical cost of £2,500. It is thought that high street banks can expect
a combined £9billion windfall from will-writing services. ‘Families are in for a huge shock when their loved one dies and they face having to hand a bank eye- watering amounts from their inheritance,’ said James Daley of the consumer website Fairer Finance. ‘These small percentages may seem reasonable at the time, but they can add up to tens of thousands of pounds on a customer’s death.’ An estimated 1.5million wills have been written by banks over the past 20 years. Banks offered the will-writing service as a perk for signing up for insurance or feecharging current accounts.
Customers would typically be visited at home by bank staff or lawyers who would record their wishes. When customers signed up for wills with banks they may not have understood the consequences of assigning executorship, and the percentage charge may have appeared modest. However, house prices, which have soared 23% in a decade, mean even the estates of those on modest incomes can attract hefty fees. If your Wills appoint the bank as executors, you would be well advised to update them as soon as possible. Call us today to book an appointment on 01778 382723.

The River A LO N G
A
Words by Brian Jones
The Navigation Act, repairing of locks and the arrival of railways
s times on the Welland River moved on, the use of the Welland Canal changed. Although Queen Elizabeth I had signed the ‘Navigation Act’ in 1571 the request of the creation was not granted until 1620 and finally opened in 1670! 1809 saw the idea of a canal from Stamford to Oakham with plans for a link from Stamford to the Nene at Peterborough. It also planned a connection from Market Deeping northwards to Boston! A bill was put before Parliament in 1811, again in 1815 and 1828, but no further action was taken. One may ask why it all fell through – and many will respond – ‘Railways’. With the arrival of the railways, the river trade declined. Carriages of coal on the canal stopped as the railways brought cheaper coal from the Midlands. The locks quickly deteriorated, and there were problems with leakage. By April 1863, all the canal traffic had ceased, and Stamford Corporation tried to sell the line at auction. They failed because their ownership of it was disputed!
So what was happening to the businesses along the Welland? Not a lot on the face of it. In November 1810 the Mercury reported that ‘The King’s Mill’ had been blown down during a storm. It was rebuilt and in August 1828 the Mercury ran the following advert: ‘To be sold by Auction – a well-built Water Corn Mill and Bone Mill lately erected upon the newest construction with a dwelling house situate on the River Welland nearly adjoin the town of Stamford.’ Near-by was ‘Hudd’s Water Corn Mill’ that, in September 1824, was advertised to be let and in August 1825 the Corporation granted a lease for 21 years to Messrs Munton, Clifton & Co. An interesting report in the Stamford Mercury of 18th July 1821 relating to the River Welland stated that: ‘the navigation will be laid dry during the first week of August for repairs of Locks between Deeping St. James and Stamford.’ In due time the river continued to flow but communication and
use of shipping changed. A Spalding Wharf newspaper advert on 7th March 1838 described: Old shipping contract, Spalding – John Moats, Wharfinger and Ship Agent, begs to inform the Shippers of Goods from London and Hull to Spalding, Deeping, Stamford, Oakham, Uppingham, and all places adjacent to the river Welland, that in consequence of the greatly improved state of that river Goods of every description will now be delivered with the greatest possible dispatch at the following rate, which will clearly show the fallacy of ant competitor pretending to deliver goods by a parallel line to Stamford and places adjacent at from 1s to 2s per cwt; less than any other conveyance; for the following Tariff will clearly show that the whole charge of transit upon Goods from London and Hull to Stamford by this, the legitimate line to these places, does not exceed 2s., and for many heavy goods not more than 1s 6d per cwt.

Time for a mortgage review!
39
With an increase in the Bank of England base rate, Liberty Partnership look at how mortgages can be affected
L
ooking back at our article in the October 2017 issue, we speculated that we would see an increase in the Bank of England base rate from 0.25% to 0.50%. However, at the beginning of August, there was a further increase from 0.50% to 0.75% - the highest it has been for almost a decade. But what does this mean to your mortgage? The biggest impact will be seen by those of you who are currently on standard variable rate mortgages. With no certainty in your mortgage payments, you will likely see a small increase in your monthly outgoings. However, this small increase could end up costing
large amounts over the term of your mortgage if you stay where you are and make no changes to the deal you currently have. For example, with an outstanding mortgage of £100,000, you could potentially see an increase in total interest cost over the full term of around £3,600. If you’re on a fixed term mortgage then you may think you don’t have anything to worry about – and though this might be true for the short term, have you considered your longterm repayment strategy? There is a great chance the interest rate rise will have an impact on this. Whether you’re on a variable

he Anglia Co-operative, one of the largest retail cooperatives in the country, goes back to 1876 with the formation of the Peterborough Society. Just 32 years after, the first successful retail co-operative society was formed in Rochdale by a group of Lancashire weavers in 1844. It was Peterborough man William Carter (born in 1840) who worked as a railway fitter – carrying out the practical work needed to keep railway machinery and equipment running smoothly and safely by undertaking repairs and routine maintenance - who started the local co-operative movement by selling cut-price tea

to give rail workers a better deal. Carter was also involved in the creation of unionism among the railway workers.
A 1698 statute provided that in England lotteries were by default illegal unless specifically authorised.
It was in 1876 (a year before the founding of the Greater Peterborough Co-operative Society) that William Carter donated 5% of his one day’s worth of tea sales (1,400Ibs) to a rail worker’s widow. However, his charitable gift of 12Ibs of tea got him into hot water as he was charged with an infringement of the lottery law. A 1698 statute provided that in England lotteries were by default illegal unless specifically authorised. These lotteries were part of a series of financial experiments to raise capital available to the state. Carter was charged and fined for this charitable gesture. Subsequently, he urged his

supporters to form a society where they could trade in essential food and other products at prices they could afford, just as the Rochdale weavers had done. In consequence, William Carter became the first President of the Greater Peterborough Co-operative Society’s (holding dividend number 001), and he held this post from 1877 to 1884. Carter was a man who deeply cared for other people and always had their welfare at heart. He died aged 91 in 1931. The local society prospered and became the Greater Peterborough and Anglia Co-operative societies. Co-operatives continue to serve and reward their members and today, Anglia Co-operative has 189,000 active members. Just like our local Co-operative today, the Rochdale Pioneers sold food at reasonable prices from a shop in the town, introducing a dividend that meant its customers became members and received a reward based on their purchases. At the time William Carter was President – the Manager and later Secretary of the Peterborough Equitable Industrial Co-operative Society Ltd was William Bavin Parrott who for 21 years served the society from 1877. Parrott lived in Cromwell Road and was born on 30 May 1845 but sadly died aged 53 on 12 March 1899 predeceasing Carter. A bygone era: Here’s a postcard of a Peterborough Co-operative Society delivery van c.1920s getting ready to be oiled and on its way to its various delivery rounds. These two men presumably having survived the Great War stand proud aside their vehicle. The Roads Act 1920 required Councils to register all vehicles at the time of licensing and to

allocate a separate number to each vehicle so here is the Cooperatives van No.2 with No. 67 a furniture removals van in the background. Another image from our private collection of original postcards and photographs include the shield won by the Peterborough Co-operative Choir in 1906/7. This Co-operative National Festival Excelsior Shield was awarded to Co-op Hall (now Beales), Park Road, every Monday. The Co-op Hall was the Area Headquarters of the Trades & Labour Council, as well as The Unionist Club before the latter moved to 77 Broadway. After the Second World War the Co-op hall was converted to a restaurant. Next Issue: Chasing dreams and fauna – Hill style! March for Men Peterborough woman organises March for Men for Prostate Cancer UK
Camille started fundraising for the charity in 2018 and her aim is to raise £200,000. She has now formed a team ‘Uniting4theguys’. She hopes that the money raised at the March for Men event will help towards vital research into better and earlier diagnosis, treatment and support to men and their families affected by prostate cancer.
C
amille Rhodes of Peterborough is organising her very own March for Men at the beautiful and popular Ferry Meadows, part of the Nene Park Trust – to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, and awareness of the disease. The event takes place on Sunday 7th October and attendees can take on either the short 2.5km route around the Wildflower trail or the 5km route walk around Wildflower and The Ham Mere trail. Camille was inspired to fundraise for Prostate Cancer UK after her husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 43. Camille’s uncle was also diagnosed with the disease and was the first person she knew to have prostate cancer that sadly passed away.
Deaths from prostate cancer are set to soar over the next decade. You can help stop prostate cancer Camille said: “I am really looking forward to the March for Men in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. We have received a huge amount of support from local businesses that have donated some amazing raffle prizes such as meals out,
vouchers, experiences and a lap top. The main support has come from BGL who not only donated a brand-new iPad to the raffle, but also arranged marshalls for the event and have spoken to many of their local contacts at POSH, ITV and Heart FM, to gain awareness and exposure for the event and more importantly, the charity itself. “Currently one man dies every 45 minutes from prostate cancer in the UK. That’s more than 11,000 men a year, and by 2030, prostate cancer is set to become the most commonly diagnosed cancer of all in the UK. So whatever you do, whether it’s a local walk or huge challenge, you’ll be helping us push for real change, from more effective testing to better treatments.” To sponsor Camille please call 07984 948157 or to join her at her March for Men, register at www.eventbrite.co.uk and search for march-for-menpeterborough.
About Prostate Cancer UK Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition – to stop men dying from prostate cancer. As the number of men diagnosed with prostate cancer continues to rise (making it the most common of all cancers by 2030), now is the time to take control. Through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support, we will stop prostate cancer being a killer. Ignoring prostate cancer won’t beat it, so join the fight. Visit prostatecanceruk.org now to help beat this disease.

The Winter Caravan Checklist
45
Your caravan holidays might be over until the warmer months, but your caravan still needs some TLC! Crowland Caravans and Camping highlight the things to think about when putting your caravan away for the winter months: • Drain down the hot water tank and ensure taps are left open in the middle (if not, the water will expand and split the fittings or seal when it freezes). • Drain the toilet tank. • Clean tyres, look for any blemishes and use tyre covers and tyre savers to help keep the frost off the tyre. • Use moisture catchers. If you don’t have condensation boards, remove cushions completely, or at least move them away from the walls. • Always ensure the fridge is empty and open. • Remember to check your van during the winter period to make sure no damp issues are visible, the unit is secure and that everything is still in good order. • Make sure all drain points are closed and any open areas are covered.
• If you have a security system it’s worth checking the levels in your battery otherwise as it drops over the winter the security company will be calling to alert you unnecessarily. Horror Films
Grab a cushion to hide behind for these Halloween classics!
A
s a kid, Halloween was always the most anticipated time of year, behind Christmas. All of those sweets and scary costumes were amazing! Adults, on the other hand, love Halloween for the horror films that grace our cinema screens. Horror has taken a bit of a dive bomb of late, with most large film companies preferring to milk a popular series of films (Saw, The Purge, Paranormal Activity…) as opposed to bringing out anything original and actually offering up something that can really terrify the audience. In my honest opinion, they do not make films like they used to anymore. It is all about instant gratification and getting to the punch without that building of anticipation and suspense before the kicker. When I think back to the Horror films of my youth (even though they were well before my time) I still feel the spinetingling chill whenever I watch them. Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Scream (this one not before my time, obviously!) are some of the most amazing films to watch on All Hallows Eve to really get the fear back into you. The suspense, the anticipation, the punch were
all executed with perfection. Modern ‘Hollywood Horrors’ lack this in spades, which not only disappoints true horror fans, but also deprives them of that rush, that feeling of leaving a cinema in the dark fearing for what may be lurking in the dark corners! Thankfully, Indie movies are leading the way with this. There are some seriously sinister, sickening and downright gruesome indie films out there that would give anything Hollywood regurgitates badly a run for their money. A good friend of mine, Kate Davies-Speak is a very well known Horror Actress and is kick ass in her roles! Her films The Barge People and Cannibal Farm will leave you feeling shell-shocked, just like the classic horrors and the original Saw did. Another of my friends, Charlie Bond, has similar films such as Patient Seven, Slumber and Curse of the Witching Tree. None of these films are readily available but can be brought if you look hard enough! And trust me, they are well worth it! If you struggle to find any of those, I have some excellent suggestions opposite to bring the fear factor back to your All Hallows Eve.
