Ross Howatson

Naturalist, Geologist, Glaciologist Lecturer and Zodiac Driver

Naturalist

An experienced earth scientist and professor, Brent has conducted research-based fieldwork in regions from Alaska to Antarctica, and others in between. He is interested in landscape histories, volcanism, paleo-environmental change and human origins. His diverse interests are reflected in the authorship and publication of several international articles, including in the prestigious Nature. Responsible for overseeing the monitoring and surveillance of New Zealand’s volcanoes as the country’s Chief Volcanologist (1998-2003), he received the McKay Hammer Award for his contribution to NZ geology. Retired from teaching, Brent is still connected with earth science research and enjoys the opportunities to share his knowledge during expedition cruises.

A sailor at heart, Ross has accumulated thousands of blue-water miles in smaller sail boats across the Pacific Ocean and in expedition vessels in the Polar regions. His connection with the ocean goes way back, as some of his very first travelling experiences were through the remote islands of Oceania. This New Zealander carries a personal fascination with the Polynesian mariners and migration, along with a broad range of naturalist’s knowledge from years of working in the field, which ignites his focus and dedication to the opportunities awaiting guests in the most pristine and wild destinations on our planet – “I’m truly grateful to be able to lead adventurous travellers into awe-inspiring environments”.

Adriaan Olivier Naturalist & Paddleboard Guide Adriaan has in depth experience sailing the Kimberley region and exploring the diverse wildlife it has to offer. From the seas to the sky, he is fascinated by the encounters with dolphins, birds and everything in between. For him, being surrounded by some of the oldest rocks on Earth in a region that is, until this day, being taken care of by its native people presents you with a unique feeling. Alexander Selkirk Island Renamed in honour of the castaway, this nearby smaller island was previously known as Isla Más Afuera. Recognized as an important bird habitat, it supports populations of Stejneger’s and Juan Fernandez petrels and the rare Masafuera rayadito. With a jagged coastline of steep cliffs, often cloaked in mist, the island also served as a penal colony in the early 1900s. Today, fewer than 60 people live here.

Pitcairn Island

This British overseas territory was the notorious haven of mutineers from Captain Bligh’s HMS Bounty. Astonishingly, all of the 50 residents are direct descendants of those first Europeans who settled on the tiny island in 1790. Aside from its scandalous history, Pitcairn is an untouched oasis of pristine waters and beautiful flora, bird and marine life. With only 5 square kilometres, this half-crater lies at the heart of the world’s largest protected expanse of sea. Fiji The far reaches of the Pacific reveal the islands of your dreams, the Yasawas. As the idyllic setting for the Tom Hanks film, ‘Castaway’, these deserted white-sand beaches and turquoise waters are just as stunning in real life. New Caledonia Nicknamed l’île la plus proche du paradis (“the closest island to Paradise”), Isle of Pines (L’Îledes-Pins) was settled by Melanesian people about 2,000 years ago, but seized by France in the 1850s becoming a penal colony.

Today, the indigenous Kanak population strives to preserve its cultural authenticity and spiritual side, while seeking greater autonomy. See them fishing on hand-built dugout canoes with sails, living in huts, and cooking food wrapped in coconut leaves over hot rocks. Arnhem Land and Cape York Australia’s rarely visited northern coastline, known as the Top End, is home to some of the most remote Aboriginal communities. With special permission to visit this isolated region, we have the opportunity to meet the Elders of the Yolngu people and discover more about their connection to ‘country’. Uncover the real Australia in Arnhem Land, roughly the same size as Iceland. Spanning almost 100,000 square kilometres and bound by the Arafura Sea, this unspoiled corner is defined by its red rock, white sand, turquoise water, gorges and rivers. Discover deserted beaches and rockpools, hike through woodlands and caves, and find ancient bark paintings and ‘x-ray art’ of animals and human figures. Hunter River > Mitchell Falls Located in Prince Regent National Park, the Hunter River is flanked by pockets of rainforest, vast swathes of mangroves and soaring red cliffs. Explore this magical waterway, which is said to have the highest proportion of saltwater crocodiles in the Kimberley. Later, you’ll have the opportunity to venture further into the outback to Mitchell Falls, a dramatic four-tiered waterfall that has been carved out over millennia. Its deep emerald pools contrast with the rugged red sandstone of the Mitchell Plateau, creating a mesmerising oasis. Meals: B.L.D

King George River, Australia

At 112 kilometres long and with a sheer drop of 100 metres, the thundering twin falls of King George River is an unforgettable experience. The tranquil waters and towering gorges are home to Brahminy kites, egrets, and kingfishers. The river is of high cultural significance to the Balangagarra people, with the falls representing the male and female Wunkurr rainbow serpent.

Montgomery Reef > Raft Point

Magically rising out of the sea at low tide, Montgomery Reef is a transient landscape of coral reef and waterfalls rich with marine life. Green turtles often swim in the narrow corridors of coral around the edge of the reef, so keep your eyes peeled. Discovery: Take a Zodiac cruise with your expert Discovery Team around the waterfalls and try to spot manta rays, dolphins, black-tipped reef sharks or dugongs. You will also visit Raft Point, an imposing bluff in the middle of Doubtful Bay, home to an impressive indigenous rock art gallery. Meals: B.L.D
