THE RIVER THAT
Winds
From the Hundred Years’ War, to leading the way for the Impressionist movement, a journey along the Seine tells a diverse and intriguing tale. Rivers have long played a part in how we see the world and the Seine is no different. It is described as having an infectious influence on the communities that call it home, inspired by the contrasting relationship of the motionless and the ever-changing.
As the Seine flows right through the heart of Paris, it captures the essence of the capital, before continuing through many of the country’s most spectacular locations, made famous as the muse for numerous creatives, from novelists to painters and composers. Continuing towards Normandy and the English Channel, the river’s connection with its country is palpable, a reflection of how a waterway can be the

lifeblood of a community. Follow its path and you won’t be disappointed. The arts are synonymous with France, whether that’s for being the birthplace of the founder of Impressionist art, Monet, classical composer Debussy, or writer and philosopher Voltaire. While plentiful museums, such as the Museum of Modern Arts, provide the opportunity to view such work in one place, a journey along the Seine with Scenic does, in fact, encourage you to venture beyond the typical museum environment to enjoy a more intimate exploration into these iconic artists.

War Graves
France has seen more conflict than any nation in the world, with a military history stretching back over 2,000 years. Many of the battle sites have since been transformed into visitor destinations or landmarks where tourists can gain a first-hand perspective. From the 800-year-old ruins of Château Gaillard, showcasing fine military architecture, to the ever-present homage to ‘The Maid of Orléans’ Joan of Arc in Rouen, and the juxtaposition of the serenity of the Normandy beaches, most commonly known as the D-Day landing sites.
Auvers-sur-Oise
French architecture adopts many different styles. From ancient fortresses, built to dissuade invasions, to wine-producing châteaux, home of some of the most sought-after wines in the world, and the half-timbered homes populating quaint traditional villages, reminiscent of a piece of art themselves. This is a trip though the France only ever read about in the history books, and whether you’re an art-lover, historian or architect, there’s something to surprise and delight around every bend.

Richard the Lionheart died from a crossbow wound, obtained from a peasant. His heart was embalmed and entombed in a sarcophagus baring his image, separate from his body, in Rouen Cathedral. His body is buried in a grave next to his father’s, at Fontevraud Abbey.

ART Born in Paris, Claude Monet was a pioneer of the Impressionist art movement. His focus was on capturing the perceptions of his surroundings, famously his own residence in Giverny. As part of Scenic Freechoice, you’ll have the opportunity to peruse these spectacular surrounds for yourself. Vincent van Gogh, an adopted Frenchman, lived in France for many years leading up to his death. His bedroom, in Auvers-sur-Oise, has been left untouched since 1890 and is now a popular tourist attraction, open to
Scenic guests seeking an insight into how this influential artist lived. It wasn’t just painters who were captivated by this remarkable region, classical music’s role in the country’s iconic culture can be traced back to the 19th century and Claude Debussy, recognised for composing one of the most famous piano songs of all time, ‘Clair de Lune’. The esteemed settings of ancient châteaux often open their doors to showcase their musical feats, much like Château de la Roche-Guyon, where you’ll enjoy the dulcet tones while trying a glass or two of fine wine.
Such estates were also frequented by writers and philosophers who found equal inspiration from the close proximity of the Seine. Voltaire for one, is known to have been a regular guest at the spectacular 15th century Gothic mansion, Chateau d’Ételan. Here, you’ll be invited to enjoy a Scenic Sundowners drinks reception as the sun disappears behind the hills. You’ll see exactly what it was about this magnificent property that left him so inspired.
Monet’s Garden, Giverny
HISTORY In Normandy, the 800-year-old ruins of Château-Gaillard stand proudly overlooking Les Andelys and the picturesque beauty of the river Seine. Built by King Richard I, this fine example of military architecture, translated as ‘Strong Castle’, was constructed to guard his possessions from the grasp of the King of France, Philippe Auguste. Embark on a Scenic Freechoice hike to see the remains for yourself, taking time to imagine it how it stood eight decades ago.
Joan of Arc, Rouen 10
Rouen presents the opportunity to retrace the steps of military leader and saint, Joan of Arc. Born in 1412 while France was involved in the Hundred Years’ War with England, she became a seamstress, before receiving ‘visions’ telling her to join the on-going military operation. As a result, she was convicted of heresy and burned at the stake. On 16 May 1920, she was canonized and is now recognised as the Patron Saint of France.
Normandy’s modern military history can be explored in depth during a Scenic Freechoice walk along its beaches, commonly known as the D-Day landing sites, where the British troops began their invasion in 1944. Then, visit the Museum at Arromanches and the sombre surrounds of the cemetery at Omaha Beach, where 9,387 members of the U.S. military are buried, as part of an insightful included excursion.

Stained Glass Window, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Rouen
The capital of northern Normandy, Rouen, is alive with reminders of the past, represented by magnificent architecture, like that of its 2,000 half-timbered houses, half of which have been lovingly restored. Many of the city’s houses have been listed as historical monuments, rating it high on the list of architectural richness in the country. And, Victor Hugo once described it as ‘the city of one hundred bells’ because of its many churches, namely the magnificent 12th century Notre-Dame Cathedral of Rouen, depicted in many of Monet’s works. Decorated with ornate stained glass and housing the tombs of many a celebrated individual, its impressive spire and two towers have given it the recognition of the ‘tallest church in France’. Fécamp, the only place in the world to produce Bénédictine, is home to the truly magnificent Palais Bénédictine, an ornate 19th century structure housing a distillery and museum explaining the history of the liqueur and the process of making it. The Gothic and Renaissance inspired building is a work of art both inside and out. Often used to hold exhibitions, the Gothic room contains the library with over a thousand books, while the Renaissance room boasts a collection of keys dating back to the 14th century.
Enjoy an afternoon aperitif as the sun sets over the Renaissance-style building, which once entertained Voltaire.

INTRODUCING
Susy Atkins
We’re delighted to be welcoming wine expert, TV columnist and author, Susy Atkins, on board one of our Scenic Space-Ships in France this summer and, to whet your appetite, we’ve enlisted her expertise as we seek to discover her favourite French wines and where they originate. “I often feel that France isn’t just one wine country, it is many! Each French region has its own grapes, traditions and styles of wine making. Add the fact that more northerly areas like the Loire or Champagne have much cooler climates than the baking hot regions of the deep south and you get an idea why French wines offer so much diversity.
You’ll be able to taste the wines of the region you are cruising through on a Scenic river cruise. There are several on the list and plenty more from other parts of the country will be poured with meals throughout the trip. So it’s a great chance to brush up your wine knowledge whether you begin your holiday as a novice or a connoisseur.
I’ve travelled through all corners of this wine country and each region feels very distinctive. The grand Chateaux of Bordeaux and Champagne are impressively glamorous... while Burgundy and Beaujolais are much more rural in feel, with smaller wineries and patches of vineyard dotted about here and there.
When I host a master class on board I try to focus on showing wines from the region we’re in, though - it’s great to sail past the area where the wine is actually made while we sample a few whites, rosés or reds. And I really enjoy taking guests to a winery in, say Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Tasting in the region with some of the people who make wine there really does bring the experience of drinking wine vividly to life.
Your French hidden gem? I love the Alsace’s gewürztraminer. This grape variety delivers a scent of lychees and roses, like Turkish Delight! Your top tips for summer? There are some exciting crisp whites around such as picpoul, pecorino and vermentino - and some lighter reds like Spain’s Mencia that work really well chilled. Do you have any gift inspiration that won’t break the bank? Anyone would be delighted to receive a sweet Bordeaux golden dessert wine. What is the rule for pork and duck? I’d go straight for a pinot noir, usually from Burgundy but also made in Alsace and the deep south.
HOW TO TASTE WINE Wine merchant Tom Munro learned his craft working in the winery and vineyards of the 14th century Château de Roquetaillade, a port of call on Scenic’s Bordeaux cruise itinerary. Tom explains his approach to wine tasting. 14
STEP ONE
STEP TWO
Tasting a wine is a voyage of discovery that starts with its colour. Is the wine vibrantly coloured (typical of a wine in its youth) or is it an older vintage showing a hint of orange around the edge? Wine is beautiful to look at, hold your glass up to the light and be dazzled.
What does a wine make you think of when you smell it? Is it intensely perfumed or delicately scented? The sense of smell is connected to the memory too and a wine’s aromas can make us think of experiences from the past. Smelling a wine can take you on a journey through time, go with it.
What is your favourite French wine? I’m highly tempted to say Champagne or Sancerre, arguably the best sauvignon blanc in the world. But, I’m going to plump for red Burgundy instead, one of the most versatile reds in the world. Made with pinot noir grapes, it’s delicious with red meats, cheeses, mushrooms, chicken, roast turkey, and even richer fish like salmon. It can age very well too.” What is the best glass of Champagne you’ve ever had? My favourite Champagne ‘moment’ was at my wedding when we opened six magnums of gorgeous vintage Champagne Lanson for the toast. Enjoying wine is about the occasion as well as the quality!
Where’s best to start learning about wine? In wine columns and books. The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (www.wsetglobal.com) runs excellent courses throughout the UK. Best of all - come on a river cruise through France’s wine regions. What was your favourite wine on board Scenic Sapphire? I had a delicious glass of Champagne Drappier one evening - a biscuity, lightly toasty fine fizz. And I really liked a buttery Mâcon chardonnay from southern Burgundy with a fish dish at dinner.
STEP THREE
STEP FOUR
STEP FIVE
The way the wine tastes in the mouth is the most complex experience of all. Is it dry or sweet? Is it sour or rounded? Does it have a tannic bite or a silky smooth texture? I think the main thing to look for here is how much one sip makes you want to take another. If you like the way the wine tastes in your mouth you’ll find yourself naturally going back for more.
Wine is an integral part of a meal or a moment shared with friends, or perhaps alone in the company of a beautiful view. If you discovered a wine when you were away on holiday, you can look forward to reliving the experience when you return home simply by pulling the cork on another bottle.
Above all, whether you like a wine or not is totally up to you. So when you find a wine you like, take a photo of the bottle label to help you remember the vineyard name and vintage, and find out what grape varieties the wine was made from. This will help you to find more of the kinds of wines you like in future. A free smart phone app like Wine-Searcher can provide a lot of helpful background information too. 15

As more châteaux choose to open their doors to the public, the Bordeaux wine region is vastly becoming an idyllic getaway for wine connoisseurs and novices alike. Saint-Emilion Vineyard
Château Wine Cellar
On either side of the Gironde estuary, where the Garonne and Dordogne rivers merge, a host of working vineyards, all distinctive in their own way, have been producing wines since Roman times. But it wasn’t until the 18th century that the Bordeaux name spread to the wider world and the classification system came into action, as a method of ranking the best château-produced wines. The region is divided into 36 districts by the Bordeaux wine classification and, sequentially, into communes which all play host to individual châteaux, producing some of the finest wines. All bottled and labelled on site, those which meet the highest specification are rewarded with the prestigious Cru class title. On the Right Bank, within the Saint Émilion and Pomerol appellations, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec grapes are farmed in preparation for the production of what are considered some of the best wines in the world. This area is also home to one of the region’s most famous estates, Château Franc Mayne. This 18th century property is set upon a clay and limestone plateau with two hectares of underground space,

Award-winning Saint Émilion and vineyards
LIBOURNE Near to Libourne, Saint Émilion, the ‘jewel of this ancient wine-growing region’, promises much in the way of history, whether that’s in terms of oenology, architecture or culture. Awarded World Heritage status in 1999, much of the town is underground, its fascinating catacombs awaiting your curious eye. And, the Château Franc Mayne estate, nestled within seven hectares of vineyards, boasts underground galleries, dug into the rock to create the perfect storage conditions for its Grand Cru Classé wine, and is open to the public for tastings of these esteemed wares. This ‘Maison girondine’ is also dominated by the Merlot grape, in keeping with the wines produced by other châteaux in the area.
Médoc is home to a dozen communes known for their production of light bodied reds with a strong flavour and, out of the 61 receiving cru classe status in 1855, all but one was from here. beautiful halls. Another celebrated château in the region, the Château Gruaud-Larose estate, has a long history of family ownership, having been succeeded by four families in a row. It is considered one of the Médoc’s greatest vineyards, having introduced sustainable viticultural practices, like the banning of pesticides. Their ‘powerful’ Bordeaux wine is traditionally produced and best enjoyed aged by at least 12 years.

As for the wine, the continental climate of the north welcomes hot summers and cold winters, and the region’s terraced vineyards are recognised for the production of Shiraz. A fascinating journey to the hilly ‘Golden Stone’ area of the Beaujolais, often compared to Tuscany, promises charming villages and the opportunity to sample its famous wines. The southern ‘Provençal’ regions adopt a Mediterranean influence. Taste some of the area’s most celebrated tipples at a Côtes du Rhône vineyard or in Châteauneuf-duPape, enjoying a picturesque guided hike or cycle through the vines.

It’s certainly no secret that a lot of European culture has been shaped by its river banks in some way or another, with many artistic types influenced by the waterways. Provence proved to be a huge inspiration to Van Gogh who, during his time as a patient in an Arles asylum, produced his piece, ‘Café Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles’. His wish to accurately portray the effects of time was also evident as he turned his attention to the Rhône, producing ‘Starry Night Over the Rhône’, depicting his view from his room.
