In the Polar regions , the difference is in the details

Jason Flesher, Director of Discovery Operations, explains how Scenic Eclipse has been designed to deliver the ultimate guest experience in Antarctica, the Arctic and Fjords.

How does Scenic Eclipse differ from other ships?

As a Polar Class 6 classified ship, Scenic Eclipse’s design and state-of-the-art technology allows us to take our guests further into Antarctica such as the Weddell Sea or the Ross Sea, and even have the potential for walks on sea ice. Our sustainability features also help to reduce our impact and protect these pristine environments.

Unwavering peace of mind

Comfort Class 1 notation - lowest noise and vibration throughout the ship

Strengthened hull, forward bow thrusters and electronic Azipod propulsion system

Safe Return to Port and multiple redundant systems

Advanced sonar technology to detect underwater obstacles

Advanced Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system for 100% fresh air

Flights on board our two helicopters, helicopter and submersible experiences are at additional cost, subject to availability and regulatory approval, weight restrictions, medical approval, weather and ice conditions. Helicopters are unable to operate in South Georgia and Svalbard. Submersible is unable to operate in Svalbard.

Scenic Eclipse, International waters

Why do small guest numbers enhance the cruise experience?

With only up to 200 guests in Antarctica, and 228 in the Arctic and Fjords, our guests can enjoy more daily excursions, longer time onshore and more personal interactions with the Polar Discovery Team. This is particularly important in Antarctica, where IAATO limits guests on shore to 100 at a time as well as ships over 200 guests from reaching a number of pristine sites in South Georgia.

Weather and conditions permitting, we run two excursions a day for all guests, with the option of both landings and Zodiac cruises, so each guest has more opportunities to enjoy discovery experiences.

How efficiently can guests set out on Discovery excursions?

With the GPS Dynamic Positioning System, we can quickly stabilise the ship without dropping anchor and deploy all Discovery equipment, including Zodiacs, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, helicopter ^ and submersible ^. Guests can disembark within 30 minutes of arriving at a location. This is at least 15-45 minutes faster than other ships.

Our commitment to a sustainable future

At Scenic, we are committed to ensuring the pristine destinations and communities we visit retain their wonder. We’ve invested in state-of-the-art technology and sustainable initiatives to leave as small a footprint as possible.

State-of-the-art technology: The GPS Dynamic Positioning system allows the ship to maintain location without dropping anchor onto the sensitive seabed. Our highly efficient engines reduce noise and vibrations for minimal disturbance to the wildlife.

The Arctic or Antarctica :

To which extraordinary destination next?

Here are the three questions you need to answer before choosing your polar destination:

First-timer or expedition expert?

If this is your first expedition cruise, Antarctica is the dream of many travellers. At the other Polar region, cruising the Arctic and Fjords is a chance to explore off the beaten path.

Solitude or society?

Aside from millions of penguins, the only residents in Antarctica are a handful of scientists, in research posts for a few months at a time. In the north, around four million people live permanently inside the Arctic Circle.

Penguins or polar bears?

We’re talking wildlife superlatives in both extremes. The search for rare views of the polar bear is a highlight in itself. Paired with roaming Arctic foxes, reindeer, walruses, seals, and sea lions lazing about, they complete the fantastic Arctic wildlife. In Antarctica, penguins are the star of the show. They are joined by seals, whales, and diverse birds.

Hike at Signehamna, Svalbard
Emperor penguins, Weddell Sea, Antarctica

Hear from the expedition cruising expert

Jason Flesher, Director of Discovery Operations, shares his insights into these fascinating regions.

What’s a standout experience you had in the Arctic?

Every time you spot any wildlife it is so magical. Interactions with Arctic foxes and watching young polar bear cubs frolicking and playing without a care in the world as their mum hunts and protects them is so precious.

And what surprises you the most in Antarctica?

How the wildlife doesn’t fear humans and are just as curious of us as we are of them. The countless interactions with whales that

come towards the Zodiacs to see who and what we are, spending time with us, is simply remarkable.

Is there a type of traveller to suit each of the Polar regions?

Anyone with a sense of wonder and discovery is well-suited for both. You’ll have an ultra-luxury ship as your base, guided by the world’s top polar Discovery Team.

Discovery experiences

The key distinction between the North and South Polar region is visiting Arctic communities and added polar bear precautions. Some Arctic cruises are in Discovery Voyage mode which also include Scenic Freechoice and Enrich options to explore onshore.

Seasonal guide

Guarding their secrets in an icy grip for most of the year, Antarctica and the Arctic are a spectacle waiting to be revealed.

To help you decide what time of the year is best for you, here are some seasonal highlights to look forward to:

Antarctica

November – December

Penguins court, nest, and incubate eggs. Chicks hatch in mid to late December, while whales, like Minkes and Humpbacks, arrive for feeding under almost 24-hour daylight. In South Georgia, King penguins balance eggs on their feet, and albatross reveal their gawky, gorgeous chicks.

January – Early February

Peak season on the Antarctic Peninsula presents bustling penguin rookeries and lounging seals. Ice retreats, opening up the Antarctic Circle and the Weddell Sea. Adolescent chicks fledge and are curious, often approaching visitors. The days are long, and temperatures rise above 5°C, the warmest of year.

Almost entirely covered in thick, permanent ice, East Antarctica and the Ross Sea are only accessible during mid-December to January, with just three departures each season. The coasts of East Antarctica and the Ross Sea are home to seabirds, penguins, and seals, which feed in the surrounding ocean, including the Emperor penguin.

King penguins, South Georgia

The Arctic

June – Early July

Puffins, gannets, and guillemots feed their chicks on dramatic cliffs. Humpback whales migrate along Norway’s coast and migratory birds gather in snow-free areas. Polar bears emerge with their adorable cubs under nearly 24 hours of daylight.

Mid-July – Early August

Millions of migratory birds fill the skies, while seabird cliffs echo with the sounds of growing chicks. Seals gather at algal blooms and polar bears impart crucial hunting skills to their cubs. Arctic wildflowers burst into bloom, painting the tundra with vibrant colours.

Mid-August – Early September

This is a time of transition, with whales feeding off continental coasts and Arctic foxes searching for late-season chicks. Glacier fronts calve dramatically, reshaping the landscape. Tundra walks reveal ripe berries, and the evening sky comes alive with stunning sunsets. With the receding ice, it’s the only time to visit the remote Svalbard archipelago.

What’s involved in preparing for a polar voyage?

We plan six to eight months in advance. Antarctica is especially challenging because it’s at the end of the world, with only wildlife and ice. I need to be extremely organised and accurate with my orders, but also have to be flexible because there will always be surprises.

What inspires you when creating these ultra-luxury dining experiences?

A lot of people say cruise ships aren’t as good as restaurants on land. So, I want to prove them all wrong, and that comes down to the crew - we truly believe we can make a change here. We’ve done it in many aspects already, like elevating street food to luxury at the Night Market experience.

How do you ensure a diverse dining experience in such remote locations?

The ship itself gives us a huge advantage here. A regular cruise ship only has a handful of dining venues, and one is usually a buffet. So, it’s easy to get bored. With up to 10 dining experiences, we have many more options.

Did you know?

Scenic Eclipse is the only cruise ship growing its own micro-herbs, supporting our sustainability efforts. Using a hydroponic system with recycled water and light, we yield around 60kg annually, avoiding waste from ordering produce.
