Today, explore the different volcano spots of Martinique, stopping first at the ruins of Saint Pierre, the most famous of the island. Before the eruption, it was the cultural and economic capital so-called the ‘Paris of the Caribbean’. The town was destroyed by a volcano eruption in 1902, killing 30,000 people except a prisoner named ‘Cyparis’, who was in an underground jail. You’ll then visit the 1902 memorial to learn Pelee Volcano history and eruption. Exploration continues through the rainforest to one of the best distilleries. This distillery is at the foot of Mount Pelée, benefitting from a special type of agricultural ground for sugar cane harvest. The rum of Martinique has a controlled designation of origin similar to wines and spirits, and it is the sole unique appellation of rum in the entire world. You’ll visit of the Castle (the Master House) and the see rum-making process as well as a tasting.

Then, visit Balata Garden, which was opened to the public after its owner, Mr. Jean Phillipe Thoze (a botanical and landscape gardener), spent 20 years collecting flowers and plants and preparing the grounds. A comfortable boat takes you to the north west on a quest for whales and dolphins. Although seven species of whale and 11 species of dolphin have been reported in the waters, we most often see the antics of pan tropical and spinner dolphins, leaping playfully along with the boat.
Humpback whales migrate to the warm climate to breed and raise their calves before embarking on the long journey northward. The ever-watchful orcas are also present at times, as are pilot whales, a member of the Delphinidae family also known as ‘black-fish’. After your sojourn, you will make your way back to one of the beautiful black-sand beaches for which the island is known.
