Manuela Fantini founded SCE Project in 2001 with Fabrizio Bozzi and Stefano De Cerchio.

Thanks to twenty years experience as Project Manager, she has successfully led numerous projects in different sectors, always managing to identify the resources and tools necessary to guarantee the best results. A passionate advocate of a proactive and multidisciplinary approach, Manuela is actively involved in identification of design solutions requiring a mastery of architectural space. Manuela is renowned for her particular abilities in developing the structural and architectural design of facades: a sector in which her marked efficiency in the use of materials has proved to be a determining factor on many occasions.

She has collaborated with famous Italian and foreign architects including Renzo Piano, Michele De Lucchi, Patricia Urquiola, Erick van Egeraat, Vittorio Gregotti and Stefano Boeri. In the role of Project Manager, she has coordinated teams of professionals in the realization of important projects including the urban redevelopment of the Milanofiori 2000 area in Assago, the restructuring of the Franco Parenti Theater in Milan, the “Hotel des Thermes” in San Pellegrino Terme and the Snam headquarters in San Donato Milanese designed by Morphosis.

Engineer - Founder

Stefano De Cerchio founded SCE Project in 2001 with Fabrizio Bozzi and Manuela Fantini.

Over the years Stefano has influenced the development of a multidisciplinary approach which has contributed to the success of large-scale, challenging projects in which SCE Project has been in charge of full service design.

Thanks to his organizational skills and an aptitude for problem-solving, he manages each project in close collaboration with the other branches of design, from concept to realization.

He continues to distinguish himself in the role of Site Manager in both private and public large-scale initiatives, paying particular attention to construction costs and construction on site.

He has collaborated with famous Italian and foreign architects including Vittorio Gregotti, Stefano Boeri, Mario Cucinella, Antonio Citterio, Sauerbruch Hutton, Morphosis, MVRDV, Dan Meis, Renzo Piano.

During his career, Stefano has continuously covered the roles of designer, Project Manager and Site Manager, coordinating local and international teams for important projects among which them the new Museo del ‘900 in Venice Mestre, the new Eni and Snam Headquarters in San Donato and the new Stadio della Roma.

FABRIZIO BOZZI Engineer - Founder

Fabrizio Bozzi founded SCE Project in 2001 with Stefano De Cerchio and Manuela Fantini.

During his career, Fabrizio has contributed to the development of large - scale projects for residential, commercial and tertiary purposes. He has been Project Manager of major projects related to both the construction of new buildings and the restoration and seismic upgrading of historic buildings.

He has held the position of Site Manager for numerous projects that have required the design of innovative systems and avant-garde solutions, developing the structural design in collaboration with the most renowned Italian construction companies. In particular, the construction of the Torre della Prada Foundation in Milan represented a real challenge for which his undisputed know-how and intuition were decisive factors for the success of the project.

ROBERTO CASARTELLI

Roberto Casartelli began at SCE Project in 2003, as a Project Engineer. He is currently the executive director of the SCE Project Rome office where he has the roles of Project Engineer and Project Manager.

Thanks to his determination and strong ability to find innovative solutions for every situation, Roberto continuously covers the role of General and Structural Site Manager. His versatile attitude and his strong ability to face complex issues with a great spirit of initiative, give him competence in all phases of coordination: from cost control to specialist assistance on site.

During his career he has worked on numerous projects of different types (industrial, residential buildings, buildings for tertiary and commercial use, infrastructure), covering the role of both designer and project coordinator.

ORSELIDO BEQIRAJ

Orselido Beqiraj began his career as a structural engineer in 2012 after completing the studies at the Milan Polytechnic University. His collaboration with SCE Project began in 2019 as a structural engineer, assisting in the structural design of the buildings U1 and U2 in the Assago Project and then in the Rb2 Project. He was involved in the structural calculations for the reassessment of the San Siro Stadium.

During his career, Orselido has worked on numerous projects related to a wide variety of sectors (industrial, commercial, residential), worth mentioning his 6 years’ experience working in infrastructure, holding the roles of Designer and Project Engineer, involved in large-scale multidisciplinary planning processes.

Among the various projects, Orselido managed the structural design team for the construction of the New Swing Bridge over the Suez Canal, El-Ferdan Project, being also involved in technical assistance during the constructions on – site; he was involved in the structural design of 13 new bridges for the Thumane-Kashar Highway Project in Albania, and also worked on the design and geotechnical verifications for the access and retaining structures of the tunnels in the Napoli-Bari Railway Project – Doubling of the Cancello – Benevento line – Lot Frasso - Vitulano.

Since 2020, he has been involved in the structural design for the building R7.3 in the project Cascina Merlata, managed the structural design team for the construction of a 3-block building complex in the project Verdala, in Malta, also managing the technical assistance during the constructions on – site.

He is currently at SCE Project as the CEO of the SCE Project Tirana, established in 2022.

ROBERTO POZZOLI

Roberto Pozzoli begins his collaboration with SCE Project in 2007 as designer and project architect.

During his career he has worked on important projects, covering the roles of architect, interior designer and team leader. Thanks to the solid experience gained in the design, he is a point of reference for the coordination between design and construction. He took part in important interior design projects such as the Missoni boutiques in Paris and Milan and Panerai in Milan, the Cassina showroom and the restoration of the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Milan, all signed Patricia Urquiola.

He is currently the technical director of the SCE Project Asia headquarters, coordinating the design activities in synergy with the other offices..

NEW CULTURAL CENTER AND MUSEUM OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Description

Museo del Novecento is part of the overall context of the old centre of Mestre and is located near the ancient Convento delle Grazie, reconnecting past and present through the urban revitalization of a space dedicated to commerce and the history of the ‘900. Thanks to the brilliance of a polychromatic ceramic façade, M9 aims to create a new space and a new identity for the city. The complex includes the main museum building, in which a small space is reserved for the museum’s administrative offices and a large space dedicated to trade has been created within the former Convento delle Grazie. Engineering and architectural solutions merge to create a building that aims to emphasize the use of public space and sustainability. Innovative solutions and meticulous attention to detail in design, together with a careful lighting and acoustic analysis permit the exploitation of an extremely efficient shell, in which the use of natural light predominates.

SCE Project has been involved in the full service design (architectural, structural and MEPF) for the concept, developed and technical and construction design phases and in the construction management.

Description

The Trentino Michelin plant was founded in 1927 and continued uninterrupted production until 1997. In 1999 the structure was decommissioned and abandoned.

Located between the railway line and River Adige, a few hundred metres from the old center of Trento, the ex-Michelin area has been the subject of the most significant urban redevelopment project ever carried out in Trentino.

The transformation of an area of little interest into a new urban centre, which constitutes a point of socio-cultural aggregation and of collective interest, is without doubt the most important aspect of the intervention, achieved through careful mending of the social fabric and the recovery of the relationship with the natural environment.

The complex, imagined and designed by architect Renzo Piano, covers an area of 11 hectares. 300 apartments, 30,000 sqm of offices and shops, 2,000 parking spaces, 30,000 sqm of squares, roads, pedestrian and cycle paths and 5 hectares of public park have been created. Two types of building characterize the intervention: in line and in court. In line buildings are located along the axis of the railway and have nonresidential functions. They are acoustically protected and constitute, on the eastern front, a barrier against the noise coming from the railway. The courtyard buildings, mainly residential, are characterized by “cuts” that permit viewing of the internal gardens. The roofing system unifies the complex.

OFFICE AND RETAIL DEVELOPMENT PORTA VITTORIA

Description

The Porta Vittoria complex covers a total area of 30,000 sqm and a volume of 630,000 cbm. It is part of one of a Municipality of Milan’s intervention programs which includes three underground car parks and four residential buildings in energy class A (170 apartments), a shopping center, shops and offices (about 5,000 sqm), a fitness center of about 2,000 sqm,and a hotel (with 250 rooms, meeting rooms and reception areas), 1 050 parking spaces and 210 private garages.

The project comprises also primary urbanization work, a green area as an extension of the Marinai d’Italia gardens, and the new exit that connects the new area to the Porta Vittoria underground railway station. The structures of the buildings which rise to ten floors, were designed not to interfere with the existing railway tunnel. The hotel building itself is set on a bridge structure spanning 65m.

SCE Project was involved in structural design for the technical and construction phases and technical assistance on site.

ASSAGO (MI)

Description

Milanofiori Nord extends on the boundary of the city of Milan, as a sort of new gateway to the city. The masterplan of the area was designed by architect Erick van Egeraat in 2005 and involved the construction of buildings for the tertiary sector (including building U10) along the motorway route. Their layout and orientation optimize transparency and visibility towards the project’s center of gravity. In addition there are buildings for commercial use (lot E) whose central square is the place where all the pedestrian paths converge, including that coming from the nearby underground station. It is a large open space, dedicated to meetings and organized events, surrounded by various amenities: a multiplex cinema, a fitness center and several restaurants.

SCE Project has been involved in the concept, developed, technical and construction structural design and in the structural construction management.

GREEN INNOVATION FACTORY

Description

The “Manifattura - Green Innovation Factory - Scope B” project in the city of Rovereto (TN) aims to offer a new production and experimentation center to buisnesses so that they can develop and create in an environment that is fully innovative from an architectural, systems and energy design point of view. The development area is located in the municipality of Rovereto, at the intersection of the Leno river with the Adige river, next to the historical buildings of the Manifattura Tabacchi complex.

The project involves the creation of:

- a large underground car park and technical rooms floor, common to the various buildings made of normal reinforced concrete and posttensioned prestressed reinforced concrete.

- 8 production buildings for individual companies and made of laminated wood

- 3 multifunctional buildings of reinforced concrete - roofing structures of the central axis of the complex made of laminated wood beams

The design meets the sustainability criteria that have been adopted as the cardinal principles of the intervention. The building solutions thus respond to the need of reducing the impact of construction on the environment by favoring the use of recycled and recyclable, non-toxic, fast re-growth materials, components and regional products.

BLLOKU CUBE POLIFUNCTIONAL BUILDING

BLLOKU CUBE

TIRANA Description

The Blloku Cube is located in the central part of Tirana, in the heart of the Blloku, an area that in the post-communist period was restricted to military access for then becoming a nerve center of the city’s public life thanks to the proliferation of services, shops, bars and restaurants. The main entrances of the building, both for the commercial and for the offices, are located on the main streets Pjeter Bogdani and Vaso Pasha

On the ground floor, the square plan, about 30 meters per side, presents a significant variation: the corner has been cut at the intersection of the road axes and the main entrance. Thanks to the uniformity of the floor between exterior and interior, this alteration creates a porch inviting to access the commercial space The cutted angle propagates to the first floor of the volume, also hosting retail activities. The west front of the building tilts to connect to the upper floor configured as a unaltered square. The folding of the glass façade that results from this peculiarity generates an inclined space where a system of seats, literally resting on the facade structure, offers a panorama on the city and underly public space from a new perspective.

The building has a regular square plan for the next five floors, destined for office use, and culminates, on the seventh floor, with a Rooftop Garden Restaurant. The identity of the building is strongly characterized by its special envelop, making it iconic within the skyline, and especially highly performant thanks to the technological system of the “double skin” . In fact, the double-skin façade system is composed of an internal curtain wall, which fulfills the requirements of thermal and acoustic insulation, and a modular shielding in micro-perforated sheet panels.

Description

The theme chosen for the Azerbaijan Pavilion is ‘Seeds for the Future’ The pavilion’s architecture evokes a tree, whose trunk, from the roots to the foliage, supports a leaf. Lying on its side, the leaf covers and protects the central structure. The lower side area – also called Agora - around the tree can be accessed directly from outside. The basement floor of 740 square meters, hosts the technical area, the café restaurant and the Agora. Conceived as a typical Azerbaijan garden, with a small stage for performances and events, the Agora seems to be generated from the roots of the great tree. The leaf, a sophisticated backlighted insulated cuscion roof, acts as a protective and generator cover, able to feed the pavilion, making its consumption tend towards zero. The trunk, a connection between the floors and an ideal reference to the ‘lymphatic channels’ of a tree, is the supporting structure of the Pavilion. At its feet the roots expand outside, drawing the hypogeous area and “generating” the Agora.

Using modern methods of construction (MMC), architectural engineering has focused on developing a fast-prefabricated construction strategy in order to achieve the innovative sustainable target of an ‘almost full dry construction’ as well as a quick and easy dismantling process.

With its controlled curved surface, one of the structural challenges of the project has been the integrated design of the footbridge that connects the Azerbaijan Pavilion Ground Floor with the ‘outside’. Passing above the basement level, the floating footbridge has needed the ideation of not less than five different kind of supports. Furthermore, the geometry of the leaf roof structure - a semi-dome with an ellipsoidal base - have been the subject of an accurate structural analysis. The selected solution is made up by two Twins “Vierendel Truss” type Arches, carrying the roof loads to two concrete piers positioned at the Leaf roof ends. Three single-chord secondary arches are positioned at the dome end and on its middle. All the arches are transversally connected by metal ribs.

Considering the complexity of the project and to ensure a consistency and coordination between architecture, structure and MEP, the entire project has been developed in BIM according to LOD 350. Every building element has been attributed with appropriate information (category, material, breakdown structure and performance) in order to evaluate their interaction and the overall structural behavior.

SCE Project has been entrusted with the Project management, the integrated design (architectural, structural and MEPF) throughout the technical fase and the general construction management.

PRADA FOUNDATION

MILAN

Description

Located in Largo Isarco, south of the city center, the complex is the result of the transformation and expansion of an old early twentieth century distillery which represents an important and innovative urban redevelopment of a large area, developed on a total area of 19,000 sqm. The project consists of two dimensions: the conservation work and the conception of new architecture which, while remaining distinct, contrast in a process of continuous interaction. Variety can be appreciated by the constant dialogue between old and new, horizontal and vertical lines, large dimensions and smaller spaces, open and closed environments.

The project consists of seven existing buildings and three new structures: Museum, a space for temporary exhibitions; Cinema, a multimedia auditorium; and Tower, a permanent exhibition space of ten floors.

One of the highlights is the Tower which is made entirely of white reinforced concrete with an exposed finish, the framework and façade merge together to create a very significant volume movement alternating blind walls with permeable surfaces.

PARCO DELLA MUSICA

NEW AUDITORIUM PARCO DELLA MUSICA

Description

The ‘Parco della Musica’ auditorium is a multifunctional complex, built in the Parioli district of Rome, to host musical and cultural events.

The project is characterized by three concert halls, Santa Cecilia, Sinopoli and Petrassi which constitute the bulk of the project, real “harmonic boxes”, gigantic musical instruments of enormous dimensions arranged in a radial pattern around an open theater , ‘la Cavea’, a fourth hall with a capacity of 3000 seats that symbolises the focus of the entire project.

The surrounding space, where buildings never exceed the height of the cavea, houses service areas, recording studios and rehearsal rooms surrounded by a 30,000sqm suspended park, located between the banks of the Tiber, the hill and the village Olympic.

Materials were carefully selected that draw from the Roman tradition: travertine slabs to cover the steps of the cavea, the foyers and the entrances; handmade Roman brick to cover all vertical surfaces; preoxidized lead for the coverings of the rooms.

The structural complexity, attention to detail, elegant design in particular of the covering elements and the side panels remain a testament to the complexity of the work.

31 ST FLOOR PIRELLI SKYSCRAPER

Description

Characterized by large windows that allow a breathtaking view of the city of Milan and its surroundings, the top floor of the Pirelli skyscraper, also known as “Pirellone”, remains one of the most evocative places in the city of the Lombard capital. True to the theme of communication between building and city, and Gio Ponti’s original Belvedere concept, the restoration project proposes a public square to be exploited in several different ways. Besides serving as a space to stage temporary exhibitions, conferences, concerts and so on, it also plays an institutional role as a venue for local government events and official meetings. But here too, rather than performing this function outside the public sphere, in some remote or secret location, it is situated right in the middle of the square: a “pod” of white glass constructed using the most sophisticated engineering techniques in the center of the 31st floor.

Glazed steel ribs were fixed to a rectangular beam supporting the pod. A secondary structure was built on the main structure (ribs) to which the supports for the laminated screen-printed glass covering the pod were fixed. The choice of coating material was guided by the desire to emphasize the contrast between the brightness of the Pod and the roughness of the exposed concrete structure. With a view to preserving the original identity of the space – the theme of the entire operation –all structures were constructed as removable superstructures. The supporting structures of the “pod”, the counter-ceiling (placed centrally to cover the MEP systems) and the new floor, laid on the existing one, were conceived as “reversible”. In the interspace between the new and the original floor, technological and air conditioning systems were installed so as to be easily removed.

USA PAVILION

EXPO 2015 MILAN

Description

American Food 2.0: United to Feed the Planet is the founding theme of the American pavilion, a show of leadership in the global food sector. Specific themes of agriculture in the country such as responsibility, diversification, safety, free trade and sustainability achieved through science, technology and innovation are explored inside.

Designed by architect James Biber and modeled on the traditional American barn, the pavilion expands like an open hangar developed on several floors. Access to the exhibition is via a wooden ramp, made of wooden planks recovered from a coastal path in Coney Island. This access leads directly to the raised, double-height area which is the heart of the exhibition.

The building was transformed into a technological granary, where the supporting metal structure and the systems are not hidden but become representative of the architecture. The building exploits natural ventilation and the use of cutting-edge materials such as smart glass to guarantee user comfort. The highlight of this technological concept appears on the lateral surface, where a vertical vegetable garden, made up of extendable and adjustable steel squares, becomes the site for vegetable production.

SCE Project was responsible for structural construction management and design, from concept design to technical design and coordinated construction design of special features of the project (mobile walls equipped with micro-irrigation, shed roofing with smart glass panels, steel construction , X-Lam and moveable panels of the vertical garden).

BAHRAIN PAVILION

Description

Archaeologies of Green, the pavilion of the Kingdom of Bahrain, at the 2015 Expo in Milan is a poetic interpretation of the agrarian and cultural heritage of the country. Made of white prefabricated concrete panels, the pavilion was moved to Bahrain at the end of the Expo and transformed into a botanical garden.

The pavilion was awarded the AICAP Prize for 2016.

Description

The Milan Swiss Center redevelopment project concerns the renovation of the facades and the heating and refrigeration systems of the entire complex, consisting of a twenty-storey tower and a lower building located in Piazza Cavour, next to the Milan fashion district, in the center.

The building which is based on a project by the architects Armin Meili and Giovanni Romano and created between 1949 and 1952, was a complex in free composition and a noteworthy architectural expression of the “Swiss School” of architecture during the post-war reconstruction years.

While the lower building picks up the adjoining buildings and defines, on a scale with the background, one side of Piazza Cavour with its front towards the public gardens of via Palestro, the tower-shaped building has been a significant landmark on the Milan skyline over the last fifty years.

The Swiss Center is home to important Swiss institutions such as the Consulate General of Switzerland, the Societa’ Svizzera, the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Italy, Radio Swiss and the Swiss Tourism Office. The work concerning the building envelope of the Swiss Center is aimed at improving the thermal / acoustic profile of the interior rooms and the energy performance of the building. This work consists of replacing the doors and windows while maintaining the original features. The “curtain wall” façade of the 19-20th floor will be replaced with a ventilated double skin solution, with a totally transparent outer skin, evoking the original lightness aspect of the original project by Meili. Restoration and cleaning of the marble tile facades was also carried out.

Plant work is aimed at streamlining in terms of energy and costs as well as improving environmental comfort. Cooling and heating was enabled through the installation of new multi-purpose heat pumps, whose operation involves the withdrawal of ground water through the construction of a system of three intake suction wells and three output wells.

HANGAR BICOCCA

Description

The renovation of the Hangar Bicocca complex concluded with the execution of finishing work and external work between 2009 and 2010 to create the most important contemporary art museum in Milan. The Hangar Bicocca building consists of:

• Building A: exposed brick masonry building with internal structure and steelwork coverings

• Building B and C: buildings of steel and insulated sheet metal cladding

• Building D: reinforced concrete building and masonry in plastered blocks

The main objective of the project was to upgrade the entire lot to a functional and regulatory level, which required structural, plant and finishing work.

Building A, with an average internal height of 6.20 meters, houses the main management and operational services of the museum, the entrance foyer, the bookshop, the café / restaurant. The administrative offices of the museum and a small part of the air conditioning system are located on the first floor. The rest of building A, as well as buildings B, C and D are dedicated exhibition spaces (Building B as a permanent exhibition space, C and D buildings for temporary exhibitions). Building B has been equipped with additional service blocks and at the end of each block /section a joinery section serving the exhibition area. Internal heating has been created in all buildings using a radiant system inside the industrial floor.

Construction work was carried out paying the utmost attention to the conservation of the “Seven Heavenly Palaces” Anselm Kiefer’s megalithic artwork.

The outdoor spaces were carefully designed with the aim of accommodating the installation of Fausto Melotti’s “La Sequenza” artwork.

Description

The project in Via Rovello spreads over an area of 2145.00 sqm and involves the construction of a new complex for residential use.

The architectural volumes stand as a system of two blocks parallel to via Rovello. A single access atrium, designed opposite the intersection with via Pozzone, leads directly to the vertical distribution system of block A located along via Rovello. Block B, located in the innermost part of the lot, can be access through the same entrance atrium, crossing the internal garden.

The buildings of Via Rovello count four floors above ground plus an attic floor for Block A and six floors above ground plus an attic floor for Block B, for a total of 41 residential units. A four-level underground parking hosts the technical areas and 93 garages.

In building A have been designed a spa and a swimming pool that face the portico and the internal garden / courtyard, while building B hosts the gym and a common room both open onto the greenery.

The design of the façades, a composition of slightly staggered volumes, reflects the architectural language of the urban context and propose the typical empty/full rapport. The main façade is not only enhanced by the porch roof, but also by granite string courses which signed the hierarchy of the floors. For building B, two floors higher than building A, have been designed light facades, widely open to the garden with a system of loggias and terraces screened with climbing greenery.

The elevated structures are in reinforced concrete cast on site. The elevators / stairs cores constitute the bracing element capable of withstanding the stresses induced by the action of earthquake and wind. The underground structures are made of load-bearing reinforced concrete walls, mainly offset to the vertical elements of the elevated structure. The horizontals are made up of solid slabs except for the slab covering the first basement floor. Indeed, the need to receive the load transmitted by the pillars of the overlying structure, which are therefore not in correspondence with the underlying partitions, has led to the structural solution of raised beams. The roofs are made with titanium zinc sheet coating, laid with double seaming, perpendicular to the eaves line. In addition, voltaic panels that are completely invisible from the outside will be installed and integrated into the roofing sheets.

Description

The project related to lot 2 of the Libeskind Residences RB2 involves the construction of three residential buildings B6, B7 and B8 with heights between 6 and 10 floors (ground floor included) plus attic floor for a total GFA of approximately 14,400 m2. RB2 is located in the south-west area of the Integrated Intervention Program “City Life - former Fiera di Milano historic district area” and adjacent areas and is bordered to the south by via Spinola, to the west by the lot of RB1 residences (first lot already built of the Libeskind Residences) and to the north by the public park.

The architectural concept derives from the volumetric study of a courtyard house typology, segmented and recomposed in order to create buildings with an open scheme, in relation to each other and the neighborhood. The project takes up the architectural themes of the RB1 Libeskind Residences and the volumetric study of the buildings arises from the intersection of simple volumes with the multiform and articulated mass of balconies and attic floors.

To make the three buildings B6, B7 and B8 independent, the structural concept provides for structural joints on the first basement and ground floors. The structural elements are designed in reinforced concrete both for the horizontal (solid slabs) and for the vertical structures. Only the floors relating to the Penthouse (last and penultimate floor of each building) have a metal carpentry structure with reinforced concrete slabs on corrugated sheet metal.

Description

The Bosco Navigli project involves the construction of a new residential and tertiary building in Via San Cristoforo, Milan. The design of Bosco Navigli is inspired by traditional Lombardian architecture of courtyard houses and is shaped as an ascending spiral which develops around an open green court. The green court building Bosco Navigli is structured into 2 underground floors and 8 floors above ground for a total height of less than 32m from the ground floor. The ground floor houses commercial activities while the upper levels are intended for residences. The internal vertical distribution of the building is guaranteed through 6 common connections. The parking located in the two underground floors has a total area of about 4700 square meters.

While the architectural concept of Bosco Navigli revisits the historical typology of the Milanese courtyard, the project looks to the future in terms of energy and environmental sustainability. The building is in fact intended to be highly performing and provides for the integration of advanced technological systems including systems for collecting rainwater and geothermal energy. In addition, the entire roof of the Bosco Navigli is covered with solar and photovoltaic panels.

The very design of the new green courtyard project in Via San Cristoforo contributes to reducing energy consumption. For example, a system of loggias was designed both to protect from intense solar radiation during summer and allow natural light to enter during winter. The name green court ’comes from the design of public green areas that interact with private outdoor spaces while integrating systems of loggias, tree planted terraces and common areas.

The sloping geometry of the building’s façade was designed with the aim of maximizing the opening of the apartments towards the outside environment and allows for the creation of large private garden roofs enriched with thick trees which are the hallmark of the project. The vertical structures are therefore articulated according to a scheme designed to align with the architectural tapering. The floors, bidirectional slabs with constant thickness, alternatively carry internal spaces and gardens, and are settled on supports in a variable number and span to allow maximum structural exploitation compatibly with the intended use.

Description

Porta Naviglio Grande in Milan is a new residential project spreading over a former industrial area located right next to the Naviglio Grande. The intervention consists in the redevelopment of the area through the construction of two new residential buildings.

Delimitated by via Richard, via Faraday and P.za Ohm, the area is divided into three lots: the side parts (along viale Richard and via Faraday) will host the residential project which involved the construction of a tower building on the east area and a smaller linear building facing west. In the central area has been designed a public park with pedestrian access from all three sides of the lot.

Description

The residential project Via dei Canzi is part of the “ Ex De Nora “ Urban Plan in a context of urban regeneration in the Lambrate area located outside the Milanese railway ring road. The new created block, that spreads between via Crespi, via dei Canzi and via San Faustino, will have homogeneous characteristics that testify the actual urban transformation in the contemporary city.

The intervention Area Ex Nora Via Canzi involves the new construction of 107 apartments distributed over the 9 floors that count the four residential towers. The 4 buildings are connected at ground floor by a longitudinal crossing path which comprise the single central entrance and the common service areas that comply with modern living standards. Two underground floors have also been provided, intended for parking spaces and garages, accessible from the staircase core of the four towers.

The buildings of the Area Ex Nora Via Canzi project are characterized by a widely open and bright ground floor which allows a direct link with the internal gardens and the future public park that they define. The three private courtyards, which can be perceived from the outside through the ground floor large windows, enhance the significant relationship with vegetation. In the building itself, the large loggias and planted balconies improve the quality of living by modeling a highly sustainable and ‘green’ neighbourhood.

The project provides predominantly traditional construction features. Each building has been designed with an approx. 350 sqm. plan area and interstory height of 3.25 m. The structure is made of R.C. slabs and concrete columns and shear walls. The columns are mainly aligned along the perimeter of the building. The concrete staircase cores insure the required horizontal resistance.

SCE Project has been involved in the preliminary, developed and technical structural design for the residential project of Area Ex Nora Via dei Canzi, in the MEP coordination and in the general construction management.

Description

The new project signed by Stefano Boeri Architetti in Tirana involves the construction of a new prestigious residential building in close proximity to the Albanian Government building in Rruga Ibrahim Rugova. The inline building with 9 floors above ground and 4 underground levels is located in a narrow and wide parcel in the Blloku district. It faces the Rruga Ibrahim Rugova boulevard with its smallest facade, while the main façade opens on the main public courtyard and the surrounding private green area.

The Blloku Residences building looks like an overlap of volumes: the system of loggias and overhanging balconies that characterizes the residential levels creating a three-dimensional design. Each module houses a residential unit, each having its own outdoor space. The ground floor and first-floor host commercial activities and entertainment spaces, thus helping to ease the insertion and connection of the new building into the urban context. These 2 floors form a base for the residential complex which builds upon the upper floors while the underground levels are used for parking.

The façade design needed to guarantee the highest standard of comfort inside the building, in synergy with Boeri’s architectural and plant engineering choices, without neglecting the aspects of sustainability. The control of solar radiation not being entrusted to an external screening system, attention has been paid to the choice of the glazing, the predominant elements of the facade. In fact, in order to protect against heat losses by transmission during winter while blocking direct sunlight in summer, without compromising the quality of daylight inside the rooms, the selection of high performing glazing is essential.

As for the ‘opaque’ section of the façade, it has been designed a ventilated system with a metal substructure and stone cladding that covers the external mineral wool insulation. To conclude, in the design and definition phase of the building envelope, for both opaque and transparent section, the values defined by the LEED certification were taken into account, as well as what is established by the Italian legislation (DM 26/6/15) which proposes more restrictive conditions where necessary, adopting, therefore, the highest performing approach.

SCE Project has been involved in the technical facade design as well as the integrated preliminary feasibility study. The new Blloku residential project in Rruga Ibrahim Rugova is today the third building under construction in Tirana – to which are added the Blloku Cube in Rruga Pjeter Bogdani and the Vertical Forest in Rruga Dervish Hima – born from the synergy between Stefano Boeri Architetti and the multidisciplinary team of SCE project.

PALAZZO NAVIGLIO POGLIAGHI RESIDENCES

Description

The project in Via Pogliaghi, in the San Cristoforo area, involves the construction of a new residential complex called Palazzo Naviglio. The intervention consists in the demolition of the existing industrial buildings and the construction of 75 apartments with high energy and housing standards and new underground parking.

The new complex of Palazzo Naviglio covers an area of about 4500 square meters and consists of two 12-storey buildings called “Garden” (view from the apartments oriented West) and “City” (view from the apartments oriented East), vertically distributed by 2 staircases, and connected together by the ground floor where reception and common service areas has been designed. The construction of two new underground levels within the shape of the existing basement complete the project hosting cellars, garages and technical rooms.

The structural system proposed for the new Palazzo Naviglio consists of a vertical reinforced concrete skeleton with reinforced concrete slabs cast on site and arranged on large spans. This system therefore allows maximum flexibility of the internal distribution of the apartment. The layout and size of the technical system slots further supports this request for flexibility. Indeed, it has been the object of an accurate interpolation analysis where the possible configurations have been carefully studied.

Palazzo Naviglio has been designed in compliance with the “Green Thinking” philosophy and is a highly sustainable building that actively and innovatively participates in the reduction of air pollution. The façade desig, its composition and colors, arise out of the decision to use highly eco-sustainable materials. In particular, the use of Italcementi TX-ACTIVE “Smog-eating” coating, which has an action based on a photocatalytic principle capable of reducing air pollutants and the bamboo as a zero-impact cladding. The ” Smog-eating” technology has also been used for outdoor flooring. In addition, the design of the complex foresees the installation of:

• an open circuit geothermal system with high efficiency heat pumps

• a photovoltaic system on the roof (flat – not visible) to support the electricity consumption in the condominium

• rainwater reuse system for irrigation of the common garden

• composter and vertical presses for smart waste management (selfproduction of compost from organic waste for condominium green areas and volume reduction of plastic and paper waste)

Description

This 21 floors tower, signed by the Milanese architecture studio Stefano Boeri Architetti enters in the urban development plan Tirana 2030. Indeed, the most important goal defined in the masterplan is to increase the amount of greenery in the Albanese capital and the Vertical forest is conceived to host over 3200 bushes and 145 trees.

The chosen structural solution for the Vertical Forest project consists in a curtain wall façade made of extra-clear glass composed of aluminium profiles and double-glazed panels with stratified external sheet to cover the masonry walls. This option, quite unusual in a residential context, is made possible thanks to the vegetation spread along the façade, typical of the Vertical Forest projects.The containers, integrated in the masonry parapets of the balconies, have been strategically set to preserve the privacy of future residents, strengthen the connection to nature while offering an impressive view of the surrounding urban landscape from each one of the 105 apartments.

SCE Project took part to the development of an innovative joint for the windows frames that provides slenderness to the aluminium profiles while simplifying the maintenance works. In fact, the full-height grazed façade is supported by a modular mullions and transoms system which allow both the dismounting of the glass panels from inside the building, and the replacement of the Spandrell panels from outside.

From the street, the shrubs and trees as well as as the 3m overhang balconies create a breath-taking three-dimensional effect.

Description

The building in Via Stresa is made up by 3 parts: a residential tower, two low-rise buildings of 3 floors each and 2 underground floors of approximately 4200 m2 each. The tower has a substantially square plan and counts 24 floors of about 655 m2 for a total height of about 80 m. The tower ground floor is mainly used for common services such as a gym and a 400m2 pool distributed on 2 levels and that open onto the surrounding green space. In fact, the ground floor has large spaces dedicated to landscape.

The thickness of the foundation slab has been differentiated for the area under the tower (180cm) compared to the rest of the project area (70cm). Furthermore, to mitigate the effect of differential deformations and to reduce the effort on the structures of the adjacent existing underground car park, were adopted unreinforced settlement reducing piles (SRPs). The use of a foundation on SRPs allows numerous advantages, including the reduction of absolute subsidence, the reduction of the thickness of the foundation slab and the reduction of differential settlement in the floor. The structure of the tower is characterized by a central core consisting of reinforced concrete partitions and designed to resist horizontal forces while vertical loads are carried by columns set along the perimeter of the building. The thickness of the core walls and the size of the pillars discreetly decrease with the height of the Tower. In particular, the section changes in correspondence with the ground floor and the 12th floor. The floors are reinforced concrete slabs. The building Tower and EB (adjacent low-rise building) are joined off the ground by means of a sliding support. Furthermore, the floors of the EB building, consisting of a single span of light of 11.5 m, are post-tensioned.

CITTA’ CONTEMPORANEA

Description

The lot named R7/02 is part of the completion of the intervention plan for the construction of residential buildings in the Cascina Merlata area, in Milan. The entire program foresees the construction of subsidized housing provided by the Integrated Plan of Intervention, approved by the Decree of the President of the Lombardy n. 4299 of 13/05/2011.

The planned new volumes were obtained by inserting a 24-storey tower set on top of a 10 storey building. Both are set on a base of two underground levels that will accommodate car parks and auxiliary spaces for the residences . The project of the Citterio Viel & Partners architectural firm is characterized by a rigorous and regular grid of facade, which punctuates the presence of large loggias that interface with the surrounding environment and with the nearby site.

The iconic presence and role of the buildings is emphasized by the use of a ceramic material generating a unique glossy effect and providing the sheen of a fully glazed surface. The structure of both buildings is composed of solid slabs, reinforced concrete columns and core brace made of concrete walls.

SCE Project was involved in the concept, developed, technical and construction structural design and in the structural construction management. The firm also worked on the B.I.M model and data management.

CASCINA MERLATA

Description

Cascina Merlata is a vast urban redevelopment project for residential buildings located northwest of Milan, in the neighborhood adjacent to the EXPO 2015 exhibition site, and is the largest social housing project in Milan.

The complex consists of seven towers, marked by a highly varied architectural style and the result of a sophisticated characterization that began with the international architectural competition in 2013, in which major architecture firms including CZA ARCHITETTI, C + S Associati, Mario Cucinella Architects, Teknoarch, B22, PURA took part. The towers were designed to the highest environmental sustainability criteria, and were earmarked to host the international delegates who participated in Expo 2015, and then later converted into social housing. The towers, up to 23 floors high, enliven a regenerated area of the city of Milan, forming part of the renewed city skyline through a deliberate volumetric and chromatic contrast, thanks to which this modern cluster can be recognized as a new urban landmark.

Structural and technological solutions were cleverly designed favoring a criteria of repetitiveness and simplification in construction complying with pre-established times and costs, with the aim of high quality construction.

VIA MARCO POLO, MILAN

Description

Marco Polo residence is being developed in the heart of Porta Nuova on an area facing Solaria towers at the intersection of via Marco Polo and via Joe Colombo with via Amerigo Vespucci.

The new building, intended as a luxury residence, is ten floors high on via Amerigo Vespucci, and will be built adjoining the existing ones adding a lower block and forming a private courtyard with an exclusive interior garden.

The project has a linear design that emphasises the horizontal perception of the building by means of string-courses that surround the perimeter of the building.

The ground level of the building is transparent having a spacious hall for private entrances and common areas while a fitness center with a swimming pool is located on via Joe Colombo. The complex also has three basement floors with cellars and 131 garages.

The building has been designed with a contemporary architectural style that emphasizes the brightness of the rooms through large terraces that give shape to the volume and represent the relationship between the city and the panoramic view of Porta Nuova.

The entire complex is characterized by the transparency given by the large windows and the parapets, while the terraces on the top floor are enlivened by the flower pots integrated into the parapets. Special care was given to the short sides of the building highlighted by panoramic loggias that gradually drop away.

Description

The project for the construction of the new residential complex on the site of the former Hydrotherapy Institute (Istituto Sieroterapico) (Lots 1 and 2) in Milan is part of the wider redevelopment of the Navigli neighborhood.

The complex, called “Le Corti tra i Navigli”, is made up of four courtyard buildings, each of about 12,000 square meters, and an underground car park, facing the historic Cascina Argelati. EX SIEROTERAPICO HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

Description

The project for the construction of the new residential complex on the site of the former Hydrotherapy Institute (Istituto Sieroterapico) (Lots 1 and 2) in Milan is part of the redevelopment of the Navigli neighborhood.

The two buildings, which cover a gross area of over 30,000 square meters, rise from a triangular shaped site containing two underground parking levels, located between viale Liguria, a large underground channel and Giovanni Giorgi high school, through the use of tied bulkheads.

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT VIA TIMAVO

MILAN

Description

New-build residential project, which involves the construction of two, seismically independent but functionally connected buildings linked by walkways to all levels above ground. In order to avoid duplication of vertical columns, expansion joints were formed using shear connectors suitable for transferring vertical loads. A condominium swimming pool was build on the top floor between the two main buildings. The project comes with an underground car park, created by exploiting and expanding the spaces of the previously demolished buildings.

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT VIA MAGOLFA

MILAN

Description

New residential complex situated between via Gola, via Magolfa and via Pichi in the heart of the Navigli district in Milan.

The complex consists of several new reinforced concrete buildings designed with similar characteristics to adjacent buildings and therefore perfectly and elegantly placed in the context of the historic Navigli district.

The buildings are arranged along an irregular perimeter, inside which a small green park has been created, with a water curtain and a small central canal. It comes with an underground garage.

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT VIA MOSCOVA

Description

The building in via Moscova 38 is a high-quality residential intervention with important aesthetic features recognizable both in the interior design and in the façade. At the main entrance on via Moscova, a façade consisting of continuous windows of fixed and opening modules invite one to the interior of the atrium, which is framed externally by a shelter on which the building’s name stands and is further highlighted by an elegant LED backlight system.

The four underground levels were designed to accommodate a selfparking system for the automated parking of cars. On the upper floors, a slender structural system of concrete and steelwork was designed to integrate perfectly with the architectural spaces. Scrupulous monitoring of the construction phases allowed the achievement of a high level of harmonization between disciplines.

PIAZZA ALBANIA

ROME

Description

Redevelopment project of an office complex to build new residences in the Aventino area, not far from Circus Maximus in Rome. The complex, of over 100,000 cubic meters in total, is made up of a basement level located between Piazza Albania and via dei Decii from which three buildings of six floors emerge; one of the buildings, on via di Sant’Anselmo, also has a further two levels below the first basement level.

The architectural design has provided new facilities on the existing roof. A retrofit and assessment of the new structure based on the most recent seismic regulations has been carried out.

HOTEL LE SERENO LAGO DI COMO

TORNO (CO)

Description

Il Sereno di Torno, Como, designed by Studio Urquiola and Patric Blank, is a luxury hotel in terms of both its facilities and activities and for the quality of materials and interior and exterior finishes, as well as its refined furnishings.

The new building required (many modifications such as) the demolition of the old “Hotel Villa Flora”, while preserving many of the Moltrasio stone structures, such as the boathouse, the basement of the building that was partially immersed in the lake and part of the retaining walls of the green slope.

The entire complex includes, in addition to the hotel, a new basement used for storage and back rooms and partly built under the level of the lake, a covered garage, also partly built under the level of the lake, with overhead reception and car drop-off area connected to the reception of the hotel by a metal footbridge and the new spa with a fitness area on two levels, created inside part of the existing boathouse. The project comes with the two green walls “Le Mirroir Vert du Lac” and “Le Canyon” and the sculpture “Les Racines Echasse Esm”, created by Patric Blank, who also oversaw the project to arrange the landscape.

The new basement level, the fitness area inside the dock and the garage, was made entirely of reinforced concrete, creating a single waterproof concrete tank to protect the new spaces from the lake water, which during the periods of maximum fill, rises above the level of the basement. The above-ground floors of the hotel were made instead with a mixed solution, composed of steel columns, elevator and staircases, floors and attics of reinforced concrete on metal sheeting.

The materials used for the building’s cladding are the split Moltrasio stone, already used for the existing conserved structures of the boathouse and the basement of the hotel, and reused for the lining of the garage, the swimming pool facing the lake, and the columns of the walkway; the main building was entirely covered with Grès tiles, applied with a ventilated façade system, with insertion of movable and fixed screens of natural wood slats. The external floors were made of Fossena stone tiles, with natural wood parts protecting the outdoor pool.

The interior design project by Studio Urquiola used fine materials such as natural wood, metal, smooth and sculpted travertine and Grès tiles for the walls of rooms and common areas; the interior floors of the common areas are made of natural wood, veneered in marble aggregate and tiles of Fossena stone, while for the rooms, common areas and the external terraces, quartzite was used.

ST REGIS VENICE

BACINO SAN MARCO (VE)

Description

The project involves the renovation of the Westin Europa & Regina hotel in Venice located in the heart of the city just a few steps away from Piazza San Marco. It is an intervention of about 20.000m2 aimed at restoring the historic Grand Hotel Britannia – first opened in 1895 – to its original splendor. Through the restyling of the 169 rooms and suites and the various common areas such as spa, restaurant, the Library, the terrace and garden which offer a breathless view of the Grand Canal and some of the most famous monuments in Venice, rises “The St Regis Venice”, new point of reference for 5 stars luxury hotel.

The reduction of the number of rooms has allowed to get more generous spaces. The operation has also foreseen the reconfiguration of the plant installations and the structural reinforcement of the existing floors and walls. The façades of the buildings called “Palazzi” Tiepolo, Barozzi, Canova and Regina, composing the complex of “The St Regis Venice” hotel, have also been restored. Finally, the architectural design of all the common areas located on the ground floor, of the 129 rooms and 40 suites, has been meticulously renovated with a sophisticated and modern Venetian-inspired touch.

The strategic position of The St Regis Venice, where the Grand Canal opens in the “Bacino San Marco”, has made indispensable the supply of materials and machinery by water, transforming the management of the construction site and interferences with maritime traffic into a real “Tour de force”.

SCE Project has been involved in the analysis and verification of the concept design and the identification of eventual critical issues, interdisciplinary and regulatory coordination, and the technical and construction architectural design. SCE Project was also involved in the technical assistance on site.

NHOW HOTEL

VIA

TORTONA 35, MILAN

Description

The Nhow - Design & Fashion Hotel, the result of the reconversion of industrial buildings previously occupied General Electric, stands in the Tortona district in Milan, a post-industrial artistic and creative center. The design translates into a hotel that, in addition to 256 rooms, has suites, a spa which is furnished in an eclectic way and offers spaces for events and fashion shows, restaurants, bars, with common areas that resemble small art galleries, in an atmosphere that combines street art with design pieces.

The design of each façade of the different buildings that make up the complex takes its inspiration from the architectural characteristics of each volume. The composition of the buildings allows a clear identification of the constituent parts and at some points leaves, in some partitions, clear references to the original industrial buildings. The unifying element is obtained from a monochrome façade interspaced with windows that, treated with specially colored films, create chromatic variation.

NH HOTEL

ORIO AL SERIO (BG)

Description

The area opposite the Orio al Serio airport (Bergamo) began its renewal at the end of the 90s with the construction of the Oriocenter shopping center and was completed with the new Hotel. The main objective was to be able to create a building to host receptions, meeting the standards of the hotel chain while maintaining its own identity by being able to connect with the other buildings that composed the commercial area. The building is oriented longitudinally east-west, with a large interior patio overlooking the restaurant, the conference rooms and some of the rooms. Parallel to the highway, the transparent volume of the lobby is inclined along the ramp that connects the reception to the conference center and the restaurant on the first level, emphasizing the dynamism of the view. The building is surmounted by a large roof structure - on the east side with a large overhang - highlighting the main entrance. The pedestal was designed as a tribute to the work of Burri.

HOTEL DES THERMES

SAN PELLEGRINO TERME (BG)

Description

The new Terme di San Pellegrino is part of a redevelopment project of the ex-casino area designed by Studio D8. The thermal baths complex was created by salvaging the historic buildings of Hotel Terme and Sala Mescita of the early 1900s, to which the new three-storey building was annexed, built following the demolition of the existing disused hotel of the 1960s.

The historic buildings have been the subject of careful restoration work, which has made it possible to fully preserve the most important façades and interior spaces, including the frescoed hall, the external portico, the entrance hall with its majestic staircase and the frescoed ceilings of the Hotel Terme. The reclaimed buildings house the entrance hall with reception on the ground floor, which was obtained by closing the external porch with glass walls, the dressing room area and the buffet room inside the Sala Mescita. The first floors of both buildings have been given over to the “dry” part of the thermal baths complex, where the treatment rooms, saunas, and relaxation areas have been positioned, one of which was made by recovering the existing glazed space above the Sala Mescita which allows access to the new wing of the spa complex.

The new multi-storey building and the outdoor spaces make up the “wet” area of the spa complex. Pools with different types of treatment, steam baths and saunas have been positioned on the three levels above ground. The outdoor areas on the ground and first floor host the swimming pool, the outdoor pools and solarium areas. The vertical skin of the new facade consists of perforated panels and “diamond” shaped pilasters of fiber-reinforced concrete. The facade is interrupted by a horizontal shelter, covered with stainless steel and supported by slender metal columns.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL AND SPA

VIA GESU’, MILAN

Description

The spa of the Four Seasons Hotel in Milan was created in the basement levels of the historic building in via Gesù, going deeper two further levels, used as a spa and fitness room.

The interior design project was by by Patricia Urquiola, with whom SCE, over the years, has consolidated a close relationship of collaboration. The first underground level hosts the spa that includes a reception, swimming pool, treatment rooms, changing rooms with sauna areas and Turkish bath, VIP treatment room and beauty salon; the second basement level has been used as a fitness area, a plant room for the swimming pool and new storage rooms and offices serving the hotel.

The methods used to excavate and create the structures, kept the hotel functional throughout the period of the work and preserved the integrity of the historic buildings located nearby.

CAVALLINO TREPORTI, (VE)

Description

The new commercial area of the Marina di Venezia Camping Village, a tourist complex in the municipality of Cavallino Treporti, is the result of a full renovation and redevelopment project designed by the MTLC studio. The new settlement replaces the pre-existing buildings, which were characterized by structures, finishes and systems of low value, no longer suitable for current needs and not in compliance with the regulatory requirements in force.

The project takes note of existing building and environmental consistencies, recognizing in particular the fundamental importance of the latter and value for the quality of the spaces. The design has set itself the goal of creating a building complex that reflects the image of the market through the creation of different volumes which are permeable and unified by an unique roof, so as to be identified as a single building in reference to the covered market, and the redistribution of building loads along the existing main axis while enhanced by the new squares and new inner courtyards of stationary transition. With respect to the existing architecture which is characterized by a large number of small volumes, and to allow the vegetation to remain in the foreground, the seven new buildings consist of bodies of one level above ground with flat roofs; only two of them present an additional underground level, so as to respond to the needs of the activities hosted therein.

During both the design and construction phases, careful planning of the supply and availability aspects of materials and technologies, with due attention to the time schedule, was necessary to meet the tight deadlines granted by the client for the completion of the work, linked to the seasonal closure of camping activities.

HOTEL EDEN

ROME

Description

Complete renovation of the historic hotel, located in via Ludovisi in Rome, between Villa Borghese and Piazza di Spagna.

SCE developed the structural project, from the concept design to technical design as well as obtaining the permits for the structural work. The concept design and developed design phases, in particular, required careful coordination for the coordination between MEP design and fire protection engineering, looking for structural solutions with the least impact on the performance of a 19th century historic building, characterized by load-bearing walls and ceilings with rafters and arches. A careful investigation phase and preliminary assessment of static and seismic vulnerability was carried out, also considering the work done during previous renovations, which had already altered the original structure.

Among other things, the work was aimed at the creation of a spa on the ground floor, the complete renovation of the panoramic restaurant on the top floor, the development of vertical circulation with the insertion of new and faster elevators, the adaptation of escape routes and the reinforcement of the floors, aimed at increasing the resistance to vertical loads and reducing vibrations where necessary.

HOTEL MANDARIN ORIENTAL

VIA MONTE DI PIETÀ, MILAN

Description

The Mandarin Oriental is a luxurious five-star hotel located in via Monte di Pietà, a few steps from the center of Milan.

The project, based on a design by Antonio Citterio and Partners, involved the renovation of four 18th century historic buildings with the aim of adapting and converting the existing spaces to their new function, keeping as much of the original structure of the buildings as possible so as not to alter its charm and historical value.

The project required much structural work, some of which was particularly delicate and complex (Berliner walls/soldier pile walls, precise demolition of load-bearing structures and load transfers).

SHERATON HOTEL

VIA CALDERA, MILAN

Description

The building located in Via Caldera 21 in Milan, known until 2009 as the “Grand Hotel Brun”, was built at the beginning of the 80s. The existing building was transformed into a Sheraton Hotel by carrying out a “light refurbishment” in order to restore the building efficiency, from both an aesthetic and functional standpoint.

Before the project started, a survey was carried out on the building, to check the status of the structure and technical equipment. The refurbishment will consist of internal and external work: layout revision, adaptation to health and safety standards and fire prevention, removal of architectural barriers. External work is also planned such as plaster restoration as well as door and window replacement.

CANOUAN RESIDENCE & HOTEL

CANOUAN ISLAND

Description

The ultra-luxury resort is located at the foot of a promontory in Canouan, an island in the Grenadines, in the Caribbean sea and consists of a beachfront hotel and six villas. All rooms overlook Godhal beach and enjoy extensive green areas and footpaths surrounded by lush tropical vegetation.

The two-storey hotel complex covers an area of about 10,000 square meters while the villas are three-storey buildings on an area of about 500 square meters, the various levels have been adapted to the natural profile of the land.

Description

The Missoni Boutique in rue Saint Honoré, in the heart of Paris, joins the style previously experimented with in the concept store created in Milan in via Sant’Andrea, based on a new understanding of architectural spaces, furnishings and decoration that express the style of the fashion house and the traditional architectural features of the brand. The space, arranged on two levels, has been cleverly linked with the introduction of a particularly appealing staircase and a striking glass elevator. The modernity of the new spaces is perfectly integrated within the historic building in which it is inserted.

Description

The historic Missoni Boutique in via Sant’Andrea, in the heart of the fashion district, has been completely redesigned according to a new understanding of architectural spaces, furnishings and decoration, perfectly interpreting the fashion house’s style and making it more relevant to the typical architectural styles of the brand.

Careful detailed design and an in-depth lighting study have enabled the enhancement of a particularly evocative environment, in which the modernity of the new spaces is perfectly integrated into the historic 16th century Marliani building.

Description

The Santoni Boutique in via Montenapoleone 6, in the heart of the fashion district, is designed to interpret the language of the brand through an attentive detail engineering, using excellent materials and a thorough lighting study, creating a solid union with the refined artisan quality recognized in the products of the brand.

Description

The Officine Panerai Boutique in via Montenapoleone 1 consists of a space on three levels, with two large windows overlooking this illustrious street in the heart of the fashion district.

The use of polished brass, bronze and a particular “ribbed” glass which is corrugated and transparent, perfectly reflect the philosophy and history of Officine Panerai, with clear references to the marine world.

Description

The project involved the revamp of the entrance to the courtyard, both for the internal parts of the porter’s lodge, and for the external parts of portico. The porter’s façade had to be rebuilt, replacing the glazed façade, and redistributing the interior rooms, while outside a sheltered linkway was added between the porter’s lodge and the show room.

The space behind the porter’s lodge, at the time occupied by the purchasing offices, was freed up, to become an exhibition area, connected to the adjoining warehouse. The purchasing offices moved to the premises of the former testing area adjacent to the factory. As well as the reconstruction of the flooring, the courtyard was made even more magnificent with furniture lighting, pergola and climbing plants that connect the show room to the gallery spaces and the factory. The mirrored façade of the corner office was clad with sheet metal creating a great visual impact.

A change of the internal room distribution was designed in the “galleries” area, the relocation of the access road to the factory, gave greater importance to the gallery with the “glass” roof, which became an important, quality space not only for transfer between areas but also for taking breaks. The new layout of spaces has freed up a barrel-vaulted room of about 200sqm, the area which was previously used for transfer was transformed into a multifunctional classroom, used to host temporary exhibitions or events.

The new access corridor to the factory is lit by natural light, thanks to three large skylights and (lateral light) from the windows that face River Tarò, so as to make the connection between the various parts of the site easy and pleasant.

The infirmary, the archive and the training room were rebuilt. The refurbishment of the floors (in concrete) was carried out for the areas above described as well as the construction of new partitions and cleaning of the existing walls; no major structural work was necessary for the main structures; instead, local work was carried out for corridor openings, platform roofs and supports for new false ceilings. In terms of plant, new spotlights were installed in public spaces, while industrial lighting was used for the less refined parts. The heating system was upgraded maintaining the industrial style.

CASSINA SHOWROOM

Description

To celebrate fifty years of activity, the Cassina showroom in via Durini 16, Milan was the subject of an important restructuring project aimed at expanding and redefining the exhibition spaces. The focus of the intervention was the opening of the historic roof dome connecting the showroom to the new offices located on the first floor of the building. The architectural project designed by the Patricia Urquiola studio accentuates the sculptural role of the staircase, redefining and emphasizing the showroom, cancelling its existing boundaries and enhancing the exhibition space of the mezzanine by letting outside light in through the glazed skylight. The project involved the demolition of two segments of the original dome, with the consequent reinforcement of the structure, in order to create a new continuity between inside and outside. It also included the reconstruction of the internal mezzanine in steelwork without intermediate supports and development at the center of the new self-supporting helical staircase with steel structural stringers.

The dome cladding of pre-oxidised green copper plates, the first example of the use of this shade in Italy, can be reached and seen from outside by two symmetrical wooden stairs to the sides of the glazed opening.

SAN DONATO MILANESE

Description

The buildings of the new Eni Directional Center emerge from the landscape as an urban island. They are arranged around a central square and overlook everyday activities, atria, conference center and staff restaurant through floor to ceiling windows. Connected by skyways, the three main buildings integrate the complex with the city establishing a strong visual presence for the company.

The mixed use of steel and reinforced concrete allows elegant solutions such as bridges, cantilevers and counter sloping facades.

The design of the façade is inspired by the geological formation of the Earth, visible in the optical effect adopted for external cladding of microperforated metal sheeting and the stratified forms of the buildings that seem to emerge from the site.

The higher floors provide maximum flexibility of use to meet the needs of the company both in terms of office space and in common areas, maximizing natural light. The complex has been designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.

SCE Project has provided a full-service design service (architectural, structural and MEPF) during the final and executive phases. SCE Project has also offered a BIM and data management service with the aim of facilitating and optimizing the construction phase. We are currently involved in the constructive design endorsing the role of coordinator and technical assistance on site.

BUILDING U3

LEED® Gold

MILAN

Description

The U3 building is part of the “Milanofiori Nord” project, whose Masterplan was approved in 2005. On a site of approximately 360,000 sqm, the project anticipates the construction of 218,000 sqm of offices, commercial and hospitality businesses, residences, and services activities. The design of the U3 is led by architects Antonio Gioli and Federica De Leva of GBPA ARCHITECTS, as part of the expansion of the existing business center.

The concept is based on a linear typology of office building, with two wings, placed perpendicular to the A7 motorway: a position that gives great visibility to the project. The building, of about 11,000 sqm, consists of nine floors above the level of the existing raised square and two underground parking floors.

As designed in the original planovolumetric distribution, the building maintains the height of the adjacent buildings and assumes a free inclination inside the urban plot, to follow the visual effect of the openclosed views and the full-empty shift that characterizes the surrounding buildings.

The U3 building appears as a transparent volume, held between two light wings. On the highway, the front is narrow and towering; on the back, facing the green area, the front opens onto terraces and is designed to provide views of the park, the green heart of the Milanofiori Nord district. The north and south elevations, on the other hand, define the lively image of the building itself played by the refraction of light on the sunshades in white screen-printed glass.

The south facade, appears suspended, revealing the transparent rectangular volume, which strengthens the internal-external relationship. The reception, as a focal point of access, finds a certain visual position framed by the frame of two opaque wings.

Considering the complexity of the project and above all to ensure maximum consistency and coordination between architectural, structural, and MEP design, each individual discipline has been developed in BIM. The U3 building has a load-bearing structural frame in reinforced concrete. The foundations are differentiated according to the type of structural element they support: the cores rest on mixed base-pile foundations, while the columns are set on piles. The lateral bracing of the building is provided by two central cores, and the vertical loads are supported by circular columns in reinforced concrete. The first two floors of the parking and the square are made with a solid slab, while the floors of the upper levels are composed of beams and slabs on a “predalles” type formwork.

The U3 meets the GBC for LEED GOLD certification. The building was in fact designed according to this protocol and will be built according to strict sustainability criteria to control the environmental impact generated by construction site activities and will be managed in such a way as to limit the consumption of resources and respect the balance of the ecosystem.

ASSAGO U1

MILAN

Description

The project Assago U1 is located in the North-East area of the Municipality of Assago, inserted in a mixed-use context of services, commercial and residences. The project involves the construction of a new tertiary complex in the Milanofiori Nord area which is included between via del Mulino and via del Bosco Rinnovato. The intervention is part of a larger project to complete the building complex located along the A7 motorway, which involves the construction of two new office buildings called U1 and U3 that arise on a common base plate.

The Assago U1 building located in the northern part of the plate, has been designed as an inclined V shape, and can be reached thanks to a pedestrian path connecting the Assago Milanofiori Nord underground station and the adjacent forest. The tall building consists of two volumes: one double body and one triple boby. The latter prevails over the other both in size and height, generating a narrow vertical front towards the city of Milan which becomes the characteristic element of the project.

The main structure of the Assago U1 building is made of reinforced concrete. The transfer of the vertical actions to the ground is mainly entrusted to beams and pillars, positioned according to a tendentially regular mesh. The horizontal actions are mainly entrusted to the reinforced concrete walls.

For the foundation, it has been chosen an indirect system with plinths on bored piles fitted in way of the pillars, and mixed foundations with platforms on settlement reducing piles fitted in way of the staircases and lifts.

SYMBIOSIS D

LEED® Platinum + WELL

MILAN

Description

The new building named D, under construction as part of the ” Symbiosis ” development intervention is located in the south-east area of Milan known as Vigentino and currently affected by a significant urban planning. In fact, the area in which Symbiosis D is located, is characterized by a general renewal on the basis of a masterplan which provides for the construction of a new Innovative Business District.

Symbiosis D spreads over nine floors above ground for tertiary use with two levels of private underground parking. Along the sides of the building has been designed a large public pedestrian space that connects Piazza Olivetti to Via Vezza d’Oglio and via Orobia. At via Orobia, Symbiosis D forms a setback generating a new small court diaphragmed by a system of green areas that extend from the Ruderale Garden (next to the Prada Foundation) to via Vezza d’Oglio. Furthemore, the main orientation generates two glass walls to the east and west which offer a generous opening towards the square and the surrounding area smoothing the integration into the urban landscape.

Symbiosis D consists of two volumes:

A tall volume spreading over nine floors above ground, articulated through the design of offsets, setbacks and sections of bridge building made possible thanks to the conception of important steel transfer structures;

• A lower multifunctional body, overhanging thanks to steel-bearing structures, consisting of 3 floors above ground and am additional accessible rooftop with green pergolas. Some of the interiors are double height and are distributed around a central patio. The auditorium, with its own entrance, is directly connected to the large equipped green terrace which will host events, sports and recreational activities.

• The vertical and horizontal structures are to be made in reinforced concrete and interact with important steel transfer structures and roofing systems set on large metal profiles.

The building D has been designed with the intention to achieve the certifications LEED v4 Core & Shell Platinum and WELL v2 core certification Bronze.

SCE Project has been involved in the concept, developed and technical Structural design, entirely carried out through the use of digital BIM processes. Symbiosis D is under construction and SCE Project is on site endorsing the role of Specialistic construction management Structure.

THE SIGN

LEED® Gold

MILAN

Description

The new tertiary complex The Sign in Milan rises in the area located between Via Calindri and Via Santender in the first southern outskirts of the city. The scope of the project is the redevelopment of a former industrial site and the reconversion of the area historically occupied by the factory “Fonderie Vedani Carlo Metalli”. The objective is to create an innovative and multi-purpose hub whose sustainability will be certified at LEED Gold level.

With the intention to integrate the site within its surrounding urban context, a masterplan was defined including infrastructures that are designed to generate new public interactions. As for example, the “Smart Square” and a large green area arranged between the buildings and in continuity with the adjacent park have been planned. The complex is characterized by three buildings, respectively 10, 12 and 4 storey, for administrative and production purposes, that overlook the central square and Via Calindri. The 3 buildings have the same type of cellular curtain wall facade in which gold-colored blind panels and glazed surfaces alternate. To ensure a unity to the complex, a common element has been introduced interrupting the empty/full logic of the design: a transparent “strip” that runs along the facades and constitutes the distinctive “feature” of “The Sign”.

The structures of the complex are entirely made of reinforced concrete (except for shelters, canopies and equipment rooms in metal framing). For the construction of the basements, different types of temporary structures are used such as soldier piles (Berliner walls) and soil nailing. The foundation slab consists in a white tank developed with the Penetron system. The vertical structures are made up of stairwells, elevator and reinforced concrete columns. Some of these RC columns that endure significant axial loads, need extra metal reinforcements that help to constrain their dimensions. The floors are reinforced concrete slabs. Moreover, to face the highly slender cantilevers of the north-south facades, the post-tensioned slab technology has been adopted.

SCE Project was involved in the structural and architectural design during the technical and construction phase and coordination of the MEP design. SCE Project is also providing an additional service of technical assistance on site.

BASSI BUSINESS PARK

MILAN

Description

The project involves the requalification of the complex called “Bassi Business Park”, located in via Ugo Bassi in Milan. The Business Park is inserted in the dynamic urban context of the Isola district next to the recently redeveloped Porta Nuova area. The intervention provides for a general renovation and enhancement of the existing buildings in order to achieve higher architectural standards and functional quality.

The buildings subject to intervention and belonging to lot 1 of the Bassi Business Park are located close to the south-west border of the property. They are accessible through the driveway (via Ugo Bassi and via Guglielmo Pepe) and the internal pedestrian road. This lot, together with lot 2 involving the Bassi 6 building located in the central area of the complex, will be the first built.

The project key activities are:

the total replacement of the existing vertical closing features with new glass curtain walls the refurbishment of the systems the reconfiguration of the Ugo Business Park common areas (green areas, pedestrian and vehicle paths, parking lots…).

To create nice and practicable roof top terraces, the existing mep system will be removed from the building roofs. The underground parking will also be functionally optimized.

The demolition of the lower body of the Bassi 2 building combined with the change of use of some underground floor rooms located in Pepe 44 and Bassi 2 (higher body), allowed to take advantage of GFA translation by creating a new volume. The extension, conventionally called the “Tower”, will spread over 9 floors above ground and 3 underground and will set at the north-east corner of the Bassi 2.

For the Bassi Business Park, SCE Project has been involved in the construction structural and architectural design, in the coordination of the construction design and offers an additional service of technical assistance of site.

SNAM HEADQUARTERS

LEED® Gold

SAN DONATO MILANESE, (MI)

Description

The new Snam business center is in a dynamic relationship with the new Eni Directional Center, with which it shares design planning approach and is compositionally and formally part of.

The Center is made up of a building conceived as a pure, light mass suspended above a sculpted, moving base. The design of the façade is inspired by the geological formation of the Earth, visible in the optical effect adopted for external cladding of micro-perforated metal sheeting.

The mixed use of steel and reinforced concrete allow elegant solutions such as cantilevers and counter sloping facades.

The canopy attached to the building is a green roof that winds up, visually connecting the main building with the surrounding area. The higher floors provide maximum flexibility of use to meet the needs of the company both in terms of office space and in common areas, maximizing natural light. The Center has been designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.

SCE Project has provided a full-service design service (architectural, structural and MEPF) during the final and executive phases. SCE Project has also offered a BIM and data management service with the aim of facilitating and optimizing the construction phase.

VIA PASOLINI, PIOLTELLO

Description

Commissioned by Pirelli Real Estate and designed by the architect Mario Cucinella, the 3M headquarters is an office building surrounded by greenery and characterized by a linear, terraced structure with a dynamic and clean design that fits perfectly in the surrounding environment.

The focus on the location and orientation of the building was matched by the design of innovative solutions to make the most of sunlight. The architecture, composed of glazing, is made sustainable by means of active solutions, thanks to photovoltaic panels incorporated into the roof and facade.

Design Architect BOERI STUDIO (Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca, Giovanni La Varra)

MILAN

Description

The construction of the new RCS headquarters, part of the broader building replacement project for the historic Rizzoli site in Milan, consists of two buildings for office use, a soundstage and an underground storage facility.

The multi-storey office buildings have been built preserving the reinforced concrete structures of the foundation raising the basement levels and replacing the above ground building, which was demolished, with a new reinforced concrete structure. The single-level underground building used for storage was obtained by recovering the structures of the existing rotary printing press building and creating a new roofing slab used as an internal piazza and joined to the roof of the underground garage.

Two different architectural choices typify the facades of the multistorey buildings (A2 and B5), which have facilitated the adoption of different construction technologies with the aim of optimizing costs and subdividing the construction of B5 into different phases. The singleskin façade of the A2 building, created in a single phase, is made up of aluminum-framed cells, with the visual part consisting of alternating vertical glazed strips and vertical black and white silk-screen printed glass sheets. A mixed solution was adopted for the double-skin façade of building B5 which was built in two different phases. The internal skin is a traditional facade with insulated wall parts, external panels and full height aluminum windows. The external skin is composed of grey, black and white silk-screen printed glass plates with glass “fins” to offer partial protection from the solar radiation, a cellular prefabrication system was chosen.

OFFICE BUILDINGS MACIACHINI PHASE 4

MILAN

Description

The MAC567 office buildings, conclude the redevelopment project at the Maciachini site in Milan and contribute to the transformation of a former industrial district into a vibrant city area, within reach of and well connected to the center.

The large empty space left after the closure of the Carlo Erba pharmaceutical complex has been filled with an urban tissue that integrates perfectly with the existing one. The outdoor areas, complete with benches and flower beds, have been designed as an extension of the public road and allow daytime crossing along the North / South axis. The new business park has been organised into three large volumes, two of which are joined by a glazed structure, which functions both as an entrance and for circulation purposes, creating an “H” on plan. The third space, connected to the rest only through a system of sliding gates, is located parallel to via Imbonati facing onto it, maintaining and promoting its urban characteristics, confirming its strong relationship with the city.

The relationship between the openings have been created with great care, flattening out the volumes/spaces and adapting them to the main alignment of the site in order to create passages and views toward the green space, positioned at the center of the Maciachini area. Taking inspiration from the colors of the surrounding urban tissue, the buildings present an outer skin of silk-screened glass with thirty different hues. Remotely operated vertical brise soleil, controlled by radiation detectors, are a considerable aspect of the design, generating continuous changes in the facade.

FLORIM HEADQUARTERS

TENNESSEE, USA

Description

The new US headquarters and showroom of Florim, an Italian company, world leader in porcelain stoneware, is a strongly representative building where ceramics takes centre stage.

In a geometrically rigid “box”, due to the large shapes used and an almost obsessive grid set on the dimensions of the tiles , the advantage is total flexibility obtained thanks to a mesh of steel columns and free walls to subdivide the interior space.

All the details have been designed in minimalist style where the suspended roof is aimed at valorising the space below The future use of this building will depend on business needs both from the point of view of function and any other rationale useful to represent the American branch in the future. The task was to celebrate a marriage between glass and ceramics in large sizes that characterize the façade with a style that meets the design standards at Florim design.

PRYSMIAN HEADQUARTERS

LEED® Platinum

VIALE SARCA 336, MILAN

Description

The vast structure is composed of three buildings interspaced by two passive solar greenhouses: triple-height glazed spaces characterized by the presence of green areas and horizontal and vertical circulation systems that connect the various buildings intended for office use.

The construction of a further, smaller, block on the North-East of the site is also planned. This will be separated from the main complex and is intended to host the business of institutional meetings, communications and training. This building will also be integrated with the disused cable making tower occupying the first three levels of it with meeting rooms and support spaces.

The project was developed with the aim of conserving the memory of its industrial past through the maintenance and renovation of the building shell, recreating some missing new parts with the same technology and salvaging the old existing structures by covering them with a new facade.

The conservation of the image, the overall dimensions and the original layout of the entire complex was therefore reconsidered in relation to evolved requirements and to environmental sustainability, while at the same time obtaining a unique place to work, a vast social space, whose architectural values open outwards, thanks to transparency and brightness.

A careful and respectful modular design facilitated a fast and clean construction site based on the prefabrication and assembly of pre-finished elements which were assembled on site, like a sort of large meccano set.

LEARNING CENTER PIRELLI

VIALE SARCA, MILAN

Description

The renovation program of Pirelli campus, located in the north of Milan, involves the construction of a new learning center building, with the aim of completing the lot currently occupied by the Pirelli Headquarters 1 and 2. A strongly contemporary landmark is set against the historic buildings linked to the Arcimboldi family and the former Pirelli industrial area thereby enhancing their presence, at the center of a major urban redevelopment in 1985 with the “Bicocca Project”.

The four floor building including a basement level extends along the main street of the Bicocca district. The careful design of the glass and concrete façade has the aim of enhancing the view. An appendix designed to house the staff restaurant overlooks the internal piazza facing the Pirelli Foundation, giving life to a new dynamic space. The setting of the vertical façade elements, offset at different levels, and the need to design a space with a marked versatility, led to the choice of a structural solution in which the façade elements themselves constitute the structural grid, in which there are two concrete spiral staircases, freeing the inner space of the building as much as possible.

PALAZZO ITALIA

PIAZZA MARCONI, ROME

Description

Complete renovation of an eighteen floor reinforced concrete building, created between the 1950s and 1960s in the E.U.R. district in Rome.

The building, part of a broader complex, has an area of about 22,000 sqm and was built according to the structural design of engineers Michetti and Piro.

SCE was involved in all phases of structural planning for redevelopment, adjustment to the new layout, compliance of the fire-prevention plan, the complete reconstruction of the curtain wall and subsequently during the construction phases as structural site management. The variety of structural work, both internal and to support the new façade, required a careful assessment of seismic vulnerability, design of seismic improvement work aimed at reinforcing and regularising structural elements with low resistance. Structural evaluation also involved the existing foundations, composed of reinforced concrete piles variously arranged below a thick and strongly reinforced continuous concrete slab; in the absence of information on the arrangement of the foundation piles, a preliminary survey was conducted, using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and vibration testing carried out at the floor level, together with a geological investigation. This furnished knowledge of the geometry of the pile system, as well as providing indications on the interaction between piles and ground at different depths.

Sviluppo Immobiliare Corio S.r.l.

VIA KULISCIOFF

MILAN

Description

The project involved the construction of a laboratory building called “Torre” or “The Torch” located in via Kuliscioff in Milan. It is a building that is easily recognizable by its dynamic “double skin” glass façade and circular offices, a style icon at the center of a business district. The ground floor hosts a multi-purpose space for casual use, a lounge area with direct access to the exclusive garden while the roof-top terrace offers a panoramic view of the whole city with windows that create a transparent space suspended between earth and sky.

The building has two underground floors for parking and technical rooms, six floors above ground for workshops, with inter-floor space of 4.16 m, for a total height of about 24 m. The basement floors have a rectangular shape with dimensions of about 50x50 m, while the floors above ground have a circular shape with average diameter ranging from 30 to 35 m. The whole building (with the exclusion of some parts of the first floor slab and the gym roof made of steelwork) is made of reinforced concrete while all the floors are made of pre-shaped shutter formwork.

VIA AMADEO

Description

The project for the construction of office buildings located in Via Amadeo 59 rises above a reclaimed former hydrocarbon deposit.

The intervention consists of two blocks connected by a spectacular atrium at full height, surrounded by hanging gardens and green spaces that generate liveable outdoor spaces.

The adoption of glazed facades protected by horizontal metal sunblinds and a carefully studied selection of construction materials, provided the possibility of obtaining a LEED Gold certification.

Descrition

A modern building, energy efficient, able to adapt to the changing needs of the future of the company, characterized by a simple, elegant and clean architecture, consistent with the simple but solid image of the Pittini Group.

A large project, characterized by a strong interaction with its background, divided between lush nature and the strength of the steelworks, in which the steel billets produced by the group inspire the architectural design of the building, characterized by the dynamicity of shifted floors.

A building with an unyielding image, portrayed on map as a “T” that extends over an area of 10,000 square meters. Consisting of four above ground floors and a basement, the building winds around a central body that sorts* its different functions.

This building presents numerous distinguishing features not only for the harmony of the shapes and the aesthetic aspects, but in particular for the structural characteristics and the technical knowledge used during construction, which distinguish it to the point of being, in some respects, unique in Friuli and probably also at the national level.

In the event of extreme natural events, the structure has been positioned on pendulum base isolators to guarantee maximum building safety.

VIA CARDANO

LEED® Platinum

In a Milanese district that was the subject to a recent and profound urban renewal, the renovation of the building between via Melchiorre Gioia and via Cardano generated a project of well defined features which is integrated into its context. “The Gate” developed from an idea by Goring & Straja Architects, and has very high standards in terms of energy performance, having obtained a prestigious award: the LEED Platinum Certification.

The building site started from the maintenance of the pre-existing skeleton, with the complete redesign of the facades, made possible by a widespread use of steel elements according to a criterion of minimal invasiveness, lightness and maximum performance. The greenhouse stands out on the roof, a lively volume characterized by the red color of the claddings made of steel supporting structures.

DAVINES HEADQUARTERS

VIA CALZOLARI, PARMA

Description

The project for the new Davines office in Parma, designed by the firm MTLC Matteo Thun and Luca Colombo, is characterized by a system that reflects the two company functions: managerial and production-packaging-warehousing, both strongly characterized and differentiated from a form and an aesthetic point of view.

Beauty, hair care and professional values are the components that characterize the Davines brand and the company “mission”, which find expression in an architecture based on traditional Italian models such as farms and industrial buildings, revisited in a modern way through a reinterpretation of shapes and materials used.

The executive offices were conceived as a “village”, consisting of welcoming two-storey houses with pitched roofs, distinguished by large glazed surfaces arranged around a lush garden with greenhouses that make up the central “square”. The maximum transparency of buildings combined with the use of more “residential” materials such as wood and the presence of green helps to emphasize Davines’ commitment to the well-being of its employees and environmental sustainability. In addition to the office space, the project includes laboratory spaces, training areas for hairdressers and beauticians, spaces for product testing.

The part dedicated to production, packaging and warehousing, on the other hand, stands out by being predominantly windowless prefabricated buildings, typical of the Italian industrial tradition. However, the form of the warehouse is remarkable for evoking, on a larger scale, of what is present in the “village”. The pitched roof and the presence of a completely transparent façade overlooking the motorway contribute to unify the project.

WHITE & GREEN

VIA TORTONA, MILAN

Description

An area of the city today known as one of the most dynamic in Milan because of its intrinsic characteristics of creativity and experimentation, has been completed thanks to the White and Green project. To this end the project was aimed at creating spaces that are dimensionally suitable for the start and development of entrepreneurial activities.

The complex, which at first glance appears as a single, compact volume, actually consists of five building lots that develop for six floors above ground, resting on a common basement, used as a garage. Due to their spatial arrangement in a courtyard, a central green square which is considered to be the fulcrum of the intervention can be observed.

Characterized by simple and unbending forms, the lower floors, up to second floor have been designed to be completely transparent to ensure the perception of both internal and external spaces.

On the upper levels the façade is punctuated by laminated wood elements that support large windowed portions and parapets of horizontal wooden slats, overhanging bow-windows are entirely protected by sunbreaker elements, also of wood.

The five independent buildings are joined together by metal walkways. A frame of self-cleaning white concrete elements completes the facades and at the same time is an architectural element that comes to life on the lights of the city.

DEVELOPEMENT

VIA MORIMONDO 17, MILAN

Description

Located in via Morimondo 17, this project is the result of the reconversion of a typical industrial settlement of the early twentieth century. Some parts of the area, including the old shed pavilions, have already been the subject of a conservative rehabilitation work in 2000.

The second phase involves the completion of the first reconversion of the area with the recovery of the building facing via Morimondo and the creation of a contemporary structure in cement, glass and steel with an underground parking intented to host the Casa Coming Soon Showroom , a laboratory of ideas and a gallery of contemporary art. The new building of over 5000 square meters is connected to the existing building of 5000 square meters through a greenhouse.

The works of recovery and retrofitting of the existing industrial structures provide for the restoration of structural works and the replacement of windows and doors. The masonry columns, part of the structure, were clad in a concrete “lining” while the metal structures of which the typical cast iron columnss were reinforced where necessary. All purlins supporting the roof mantle had to be replaced. The replacement of the roofing was done respecting the shape of the existing building and the original materials: the mantle was made with an insulating lining and the covering in Marseilles tiles as original. The front facing via Morimondo has been rehabilitated with a plinth of strolled plaster that allows a better expulsion of moisture rising from the ground.

The nerve center of the Pirelli group, called HQ2 (being the second Headquarters of the famous company), designed by the same architect Vittorio Gregotti, is located in the Bicocca area and faces the main offices of Bicocca University.

In fact, the HQ2 project was conceived as the completion of the geometry of the base on which the volume of the HQ1 is set and, thanks to the adoption of large and tall windows, aims at achieving a close relationship with the adjoining Bicocca park.

The new volume consists of two underground levels, a ground floor and five floors above ground. On the ground floor, a double-height entrance hall was designed featuring two large green patios: the first is circular and covered in glass while the second one houses the corporate nursery

The five floors above ground host the computer labs, meeting rooms, waiting rooms, break areas, planted terraces, as well as service rooms.

HEALTHCARE

INTERNATIONAL SPECIALIZED HOSPITAL OF UGANDA

KAMPALA - UGANDA

Description

The complex is situated on an area of about 300,000 square meters in Lubowa, near Kampala and will consist of nine buildings, which, besides a hospital with 250 beds for convalescence and more than 100 beds reserved for day hospital activities, includes support facilities such as residences for doctors and nurses, a training school, a conference center, hotels and commercial areas. The distinguishing architectural solutions of the project are: the buildings, which have been designed and positioned following the natural curves of the ground in spite of height limitations, minimizing the impact on nature and allowing those who use the center to always have the best view from any perspective.

MILITARY HOSPITAL

DOHA - QATAR

Description

In Doha, the capital of Qatar, the Qatar Armed Forces has the objective of converting two existing towers of nine floors each, that had recently been built for residential and management purposes, into a hospital. The two towers are connected through the first floor levels and link to a ground floor central full height atrium.

The new hospital will consist of eleven floors for a total area of 19,000sqm dedicated to healthcare and two levels underground for parking use for a total surface area of approximately 50,000sqm. SCE planned and coordinated the monitoring and investigations on the existing buildings with the aim of verifying the feasibility of the conversion intervention, including a seismic updating of the two blocks to the most current regulatory standards.

CALABRIA

Description

The new hospitals of Vibo Valentia, Palmi and Sibari have been designed by applying the guiding concepts of the ‘Model Hospital’ in which the patient is placed in a man-friendly, safe and comfortable environment. The area of establishment of the three new hospitals is affected by high seismic risk. In order to ensure full operability of all medical functions in conjunction with seismic events, a seismic isolation system has been inserted using the Friction pendulum Bearing. This system is made up of specific steel discs that decouple the foundation plane from the superstructure and at the same time dissipate the seismic energy by sliding on spherical surfaces.

This innovative solution makes it possible to keep the hospital structure fully operational in case of seismic event and at the same time to obtain a more efficient and economical structural system. In fact, the dissipation of energy by the insulators means that only a small fraction of seismic force is transferred to the superstructure which can therefore be designed for reduced lateral actions.

HUMANITAS UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

PIEVE EMANUELE (MI)

Description

The creation of the research building, including the hub and didactic buildings, is part of the construction work of the new Humanitas University Campus to be built in Pieve Emanuele in Milan. The architecture of the spaces aims to achieve the most modern standards in terms of technology and environmental comfort. The three buildings are positioned in a pedestrian zone, forming a sort of “Knowledge Triangle”.

The research building will contain laboratories, offices and back rooms and will be located to the north-east of the site, adjacent to the didactic building.

The design of the building concerned is a unit of four storeys including the roof, for a total height of about 19 m, the floor plan dimensions are about 55x32 m, with the exception of the roof that is reduced to about 50x19 m. The basement level, with maximum dimensions of approximately 60x36 m, will be mainly occupied by back rooms and storage.

COMMERCIAL AND LOGISTIC

LA FORNACE

TRADATE

Description

The project involves the requalification of shopping center “ La Fornace ” located in the municipality of Tradate in via della Fornace Cortellezzi (VA). This is an ambitious project involving 42.000 sqm GFA in addition to a 25.000 sqm car park and includes the construction of a new building to be used for large-scale retail activities. The upgrading of the commercial area “La Fornace”, divided into five buildings differentiated with the letters “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, “E”, has the objective of intervening on a structural level on existing buildings to make the layout more usable in view of a redevelopment of the spaces, as well as to respond to the changing needs related to fire safety and plant systems. The intent is to overcome the fragmentation and division of the buildings in order to ensure the creation of a single commercial complex interconnected on the ground floor by a wide equipped entrance porch.

In fact, the “La Fornace” project includes urbanization works aimed to ease its integration within the neighborhood through the installation of public recreational activities. These activities will be located along the new portico and in the public square La Fornace facing the roundabout on Viale Europa. Inside the shopping center there is also a multiplex cinema located on the 2nd level of building B. In addition to the traditional commercial functions, personal service activities will be integrated such as health and assistance polyclinics, specialist professional offices, wellness centers, spa and gym.

Building A consists of an underground parking level and three levels above ground with variable shape and mainly for retail use except for a functionally separate body that stands out from the common first floor also for three floors above ground. The structures are made with prefabricated pillars, beams and tiles. The foundations are continuous and with inverted beam in reinforced concrete cast on site and concrete retaining walls cast on site set on the perimeter of the building. Each block is structurally independent of the other and has been designed according to anti-seismic structural criteria: structural joints have been arranged along the transversal axis, along the extension of the decks. The new metal structure called “Building E” consists of a single level and is located transversely to the existing buildings “A” and “B”, in such way as to create a courtyard. Each column that “crosses” the ground floor slab is joined to the existing building A and B but, being structurally separated, the new building E does not affect their structural behavior. The new construction is set on a foundation system consisting of slabs and connection beams in reinforced concrete located below the level of the underground car park.

BICOCCA VILLAGE GATE

VIALE SARCA, MILAN

Description

Bicocca Village, a young and lively entertainment centre was built in the north of Milan, where the Pirelli factories were formerly located. The centre had to undergo some restyling work, necessary after years of use, with the aim of making it more attractive and modern.

A single large volume on two levels, it houses commercial, recreational and catering activities acting as a base for the 18 screen cinema: the driving force of the entire center. The large skylight, in the shape of a cylindrical section, dominates the principal concourse, which in turn is dramatically crisscrossed by escalators and panoramic elevators. The façades are punctuated by grey metal profiles which unify the elevated sections, highlighting a grid of perforated aluminum sheets and glazed modules for the main facade. The subsequent restyling was centred around creating two large metal frame totem signs, the installation of new signage and a complete re-examination of the entrance area.

ORIO SHOPPING CENTER UPGRADING

Description

The new extension to Oriocenter, the biggest shopping center in Italy in terms of surface area and range of choice and one of the largest in Europe, was opened in May 2017.

The center extends over an area of 105 thousand square metres with 280 stores, 50 restaurants, 14 cinemas, including the Imax theatre with the largest screen in Europe, a hypermarket and over 7000 parking spaces, under the banner of “Big and Unique”.

The new expansion of Oriocenter represents a step forward in the luxury and culture pole, with the opening of eighty new units, the center pledges a wide range of unique selections.

The layout of the centre, similar to the existing one, develops along a central mall illuminated with natural light through large glazed skylights. The facades of the center are distinguished by a second skin of microperforated panels and polychromatic slat components.

C1L1 FIUMICINO

FIUMICINO (RM)

Description

The renovation of building C1L1 holds strategic importance when put in relation to Fiumicino airport, and in relation to the large dimensions of the building, about 560x110 m.

The planned work is aimed at the recommissioning of the logistics building following substantial subsidence, which, starting from the construction date affected the internal paving, generating unsuitable conditions that then led to its decommissioning.

The “refurbishment” of the building aims to restore its viability through the construction of new flooring and the provision of the main building services. The total cost of the work is about 20 million euro.

A laser scanning survey accurately reproduced the altitude profile of the existing structures, allowing a precise quantification of the excavation and demolition volumes. Detailed geological study of the subsoil led to a structural solution that envisages a new floor which will be a prefabricated deck set on bored piles each 40 meters long. The planned interventions brought back an area of approximately 62,000 square meters, characterized by highly aesthetic and functional qualities, in a strategic location within the airport logistics district of the city of Rome.

SHOPPING CENTER MIRASOLE

NOVERASCO, MILAN

Description

This project relates to the redevelopment of the shopping center by demolition and renovation of internal parts of the building and external restyling work.

Firstly, work was carried out on the internal units, for occupied units and vacant units. Existing plant (mechanical and electrical) was upgraded by updating and enhancing performance.

Internal doors and windows of each internal environment were replaced, the false ceilings (made of metal sheet) and the flooring (ceramic) of all the common parts were also replaced.

Storage was also reorganized and adapted to fire safety regulations. The entire external façade was renovated by replacing the metal panels with a new skin of Swisspearl panels in different colors, in line with the architectural concept, restoring all the sheet metal work and also reorganizing the flat roof of the entire center by implementing a new waterproofing sheath.

All work was carried out while keeping the shopping center active and without interrupting existing commercial activity.

VIA PALAZZOLO, MILAN

Description

The project called ‘Progetto Portello’, in Milan, consists of a series of interventions spread over several blocks. A circular building of about 12 meters in diameter made of steel and lamellar wood and reinforced concrete, is one of the main interventions: beams, about 3.5 meters in height radiate out from a central elevator, completely freeing the space below from vertical elements.

An external steel outer portico, is the unifying element, running along the fronts of all the blocks ensuring homogenization of the façade.

VALLE AURELIA SHOPPING CENTER

ROME

Description

The new “Aura” shopping center in Valle Aurelia, Rome, with its reinforced concrete structure and deep foundations, spreads over three levels above ground and as many leves underground. The project is included in a program of urban recovery that involves the construction of a concave shaped new large square articulated on different levels and that host ‘the Veschi furnace’: the symbol of what used to be the Valle dell’Inferno, a famous area in terms of the presence of chimney stacks where the bricks used for Roman buildings were produced.

SCE was involved in the technical structural design of the private part (commercial center), initially as validator and Local Engineer of the original project, elaborated by the international firm “Quadrante”, and subsequently as the engineering team for the developed, technical and constructive structural design.

SCE has also carried out the developed and technical structural design of the Veschi furnace square (called the Public Work 15), which required:

- the construction of containment facilities for adjacent roads

- a section of the Metro line, adjacent to the Valle Aurelia stop

- other work of reinforced concrete such as containment walls, ramps, and stairs that create the terraces and elevation jumps between Via Baldo degli Ubaldi

- the entrance to the shopping center

- the entrance to the Veschi furnace, arranged on different levels.

BMW ITALIA

SAN DONATO (MI)

Description

The project of the new BMW dealership takes its origins from the transformation of an existing industrial plant. The size of the building in plan covers an area of about 80x40m

The redevelopment has been achieved through multiple structural works:

- the insertion of new mezzanines inside the existing building, made with steel profiles and lightweight concrete slabs on corrugated metal sheets

- the addition of a new volume made entirely of steel, and containing a new elevator

- the addition of a new external spiral concrete ramp

- the insertion of a new external steel staircase

The architectural design has then dealed with:

- several works on the facades with the aim of generating a new architectural image, through the insertion of a new steel substructure to support a new external cladding system in galvanized sheet panels and large windows

- all interior finishes have been adapted, revisiting all the architectural finishes by providing new floors, false ceilings and interior wall finishes

EASTGATE PARK

Description

The integrated park Eastgate Park of Portogruaro spreads accross area of over 1.8 million square meters combining logistics, crafts and industry functions.

The intervention hosts a series of buildings, different in size and equipment in relation to the various logistic, industrial and artisanal functions, but which share the constructive solution, from the use of structural prefabricated elements to continuous external envelope. The entire lot has been fully urbanized with the construction of roads, parking lots, reception building and underground utilities for both the actual buildings and those of eventual futur expansion.

SHOPPING CENTER BENNET

SEDRIANO

Description

Designed with particular attention to sustainability, Sedriano Shopping Center immediately conveys its strong link with the natural environment that surrounds it through the color choice that characterizes the external tensile structure. The outer skin is made up of a series of backlit silicon-glass sails that envelop the building up to the roof.

Inside, large skylights make the most of natural light, in keeping with an architectural concept that aims at sustainable solutions.

The commercial surface area covers over 14,000 square meters, served by a total parking area of about 23,000 square meters.

The center also aims to put the internal commercial area in communication with the public area, creating a spatial continuum in which shops are located in a space to be experienced as a meeting place.

ICS MILAN

Description

The building of the future ICS International School Milan is located on the corner of Viale Ortles and Via Gargano, south of Milan. It is situated in an area that is undergoing rapid urban regeneration and in which recent important interventions – such as the Prada Foundation project signed by OMA (see Project Sheet) – are rapidly redeveloping the entire neighbourhood increasing the overall quality of the built environment and recalling a wide and heterogeneous public.

The future building of the ICS International School Milan stands parallel to Via Gargano presenting, on the inner side, two lower volumes that will host a gym and an auditorium. The main building was conceived as the juxtaposition of two blades with different profiles that generate open terraced spaces that overlook the city. With the play of volumes moving asymmetrically, it has been possible to keep an extremely clear façade design and to hide the Mep machines on the roof.

The main building contains the classrooms, the spaces dedicated to specialized activities and the administrative department. The main entrance is located on the shorter side of the building, in front of Viale Ortles, and is emphasized by an obvious set back of ground floor. A deep cantilever will therefore provide protection to the entrance/waiting area for parents

The ICS International School Milan complex spreads over an area of approx. 7,500 sqm. The 3 hosted school cycles (elementary, middle and high school) are distributed on the different upper levels. The ground floor will host all the common activities such as the canteen, gym, swimming pool and auditorium, that open the building to the neighbourhood. The complex is also providing a wide range of open outdoor spaces along the south and west sides; approximatively 3,350 sqm that includes a garden of about 2,800 sqm with a soccer field, athletics track and a long jump pit.

DESIGN AND GENERAL SURVEY OF NURSERY SCHOOL

PORTELLO, MILAN

Description

The project consists of the construction of a new nursery within the “Progetto Portello” Municipal Plan in Milan, in the area that was once occupied by the Alfa Romeo factories.

After careful land reclamation, the new kindergarten was built in the surrounding area with a balanced use of materials such as concrete, glass, steel and opere a verde.

A special feature of the nursery is that it has a fifth façade, the roof, created with green roof and climbers that, using I pergolati in accaio, connecting the spaces on the ground and those on the roof.

The building is on a single floor and is visible from the walkway on Viale Serra and also from the new park nearby. In this way a perfect harmony of spaces is created thanks to the emphasis on the material component of the shell (exposed concrete).

The building was accomplished through structural work, followed by construction and plant work, to which the activities of opera a verde, outdoor lighting, life-line on the roof and interior furnishings were added.

The project was drawn up by Canali Associati firm and shared with the relevant section of the Municipality.

Description

The existing historical and charismatic compendium have to maintain and emphasize the unique positive and symbolic personality within the different functions and buildings. The spiritual dimension understood also as lightness, equilibrium, calmness is a vital element that must perceptively permeate every sphere. The building is designed as a container for different functions. For clarity, functionality, distribution of routes, systems and for security and management optimization, the functions have been subdivided into independent and autonomous “Areas”.

The project must be understood as an ecological concept. Nature is indeed a fundamental element that amplify the relationship between history, the building, the context and the ‘Man’. From the building type, to the materials and components, to the use and exploitation of natural energy resources, everything must be based on ecological and sustainability principles according to the LEED / Green Building protocol.

SEISMIC RETROFIT AND MAINTENANCE WORKS OF SAN SIRO STADIUM

MILAN

Description

San Siro Stadium is the subject of continuous monitoring and restructuring with the aim of ensuring comfort and safety to the thousands of spectators who weekly flock to the venue.

Various structural work has been necessary for the regulation of the stadium to current safety standards regarding seismic events: SCE has analyzed the actual state of the complex and proposed targeted interventions for structural seismic improvement. Seismic reinforcement work was carried out on the first blue sector with the cladding of structural elements, and anti-seismic devices were installed all along the perimeter of the second ring.

SCE Project created the structural design, and provided supervision during construction.

AS ROMA STADIUM

ROME

Description

The project for the design of the new Roma Stadium in Tor di Valle stems from the need of A.S. Roma to have its own facility within the new Italian regulations for sports facilities.

The Stadium has an area of approximately 53,000 square meters. In addition to the Stadium, SCE Project was involved in the design of the Trigoria training center, the Hall of Fame, the Superstore. and several recreational and commercial spaces that are part of the complex called Roma Village. The Roma Village is composed of a set of single buildings interconnected through a system of public squares. The main square, at the foot of the staircase which rises to the podium of the stadium, overlooks the Convention Center. With a capacity of 60,000 spectators divided into three rings, a natural grass playing field and all the seats protected by a PTFE covering, the project takes its inspiration from the most famous amphitheater in the world: the Colosseum. The steel and concrete structure is surrounded by a stone cladding that recalls the rhythmic façade of the famous arena. The roof, of steel, PTFE and polycarbonate, recalls in shape the Velarium, the fabric used by the ancient Romans to cover the upper corners of the Colosseum. The result is a dynamic and contemporary form that refers to the historical richness of Roman architecture.

HALL OF FAME ROME

Description

Hall of Fame, that is part of the Roma Village, lot A1 which also includes the new Stadio della Roma and is located within the development plan of the Tor di Valle area in Rome.

The architectural concept of the project was designed by Forrec, an architectural studio from Toronto and is directly connected to the adjacent lot C1, which includes commercial spaces.

All the ancillary buildings in this important project of the Stadio della Roma have been raised up on a “podium” area providing access to the exhibition spaces. The underground level, below the podium, contains parking spaces and technical areas required for the functioning of the overhead buildings.

The Hall of Fame has been designed to host exhibition and reception functions, such as temporary exhibitions, spaces for special events, reception service for the tour of the Stadio della Roma. There is also a football field on the rooftop, which will also host scheduled events.

The translucent skin of polycarbonate panels backlit by LED strips, aims to emphasize the theme of exhibition from the outside, attracting the visitor to a space dedicated to the history of the Roma team.

SCE Project was involved in the full service design (architectural, structural and MEPF) for the concept, developed and technical design phases. The firm also worked on the B.I.M model and data management.

ATALANTA STADIUM

BERGAMO

Description

The redevelopment project of the Atleti Azzurri d’Italia Stadium arises from the double need for the adaptation of the sports facility and the renovation of the surrounding urban area. The general objective is to promote and consolidate the stadium as a facility for both sporting activities and entertainment.

The existing north and south stands are to be completely replaced by new stands which are closer to the playing field to enhance spectator experience similar to the trend in the most recent European stadiums. The new stands are to be wrapped up in the façade and covered by a translucent skin supported by light steel lattice structures, representing the new interface towards the city while the façades of the historic stands are to be maintained.

Updated facilities for public use are located in the internal circulation spaces, while access is gained by pedestrian ramps that rise from the external spaces, clearly marking public as well private areas.

SCE Project was given the responsibility for full service design (architectural, structural and MEPF) during all design phases and for the structural and MEP construction management.

MATERA RAILWAY STATION

MATERA

Description

The project intends to restore greater visibility to the Central Railway Station FAL of Matera, redesigned so as not to be reduced to its necessary function as a service building and railway connection, but as an important urban “landmark” in line with the role that the City of Matera is going to represent in Europe.

The project consists of a building renovation, through an aesthetic and functional redevelopment, as well as technological and railway upgrading of the existing FAL station of Matera Centrale, one of the three stations of the railway line Bari - Matera serving the city.

The New Station is designed to become a recognizable public space that will reconfigure and redevelop the pedestrian square of which it forms an integral part, directly connected to the main access pathways to the historic city located a few steps away.

A large rectangular opening, fitted in the underground gallery roof and with an extension of about 440 square meters, directly connects the two parts of the station, above and under ground level, bringing natural light and ventilation to the completely redeveloped underlying tunnel. To this first important renewal intervention, a new building that performs all the reception functions, ticketing, connections and services of the station will be added as well as the main visual element: a large roof of 44 m by 33 m. The shelter transforms the external space into a covered square to be used by travelers, citizens and tourists as a new public space for meeting, waiting, transit and pedestrian use finally restoring new life to an important space of the city historically devoid of its own identity and urban value.

The project for the San Pellegrino Flagship Factory in San Pellegrino Terme involves the construction of an extension of the historical building from 1899. The project embraces the existing architecture creating an elegant frame that allows visitors to experience the majestic surrounding nature and purity of the source.

The Design Concept of the San Pellegrino Flagship Factory revisits the classic ‘ingredients’ of Italian architecture and urban planning: the arcade, the viale, the piazza and the portico. The project, harmoniously combining these elements, achieves to create an architectural environment where industry and production, nature and construction, interior and exterior, creation and contemplation are perfectly integrated to elevate the experience for visitors as well as S.Pellegrino staff.

As part of the intervention, the San Pellegrino Flagship Factory “Truck Garage” parking area for heavy vehicles develops on two levels above ground to the total of three level without any underground level and with two unidirectional ramps. Direct access to the San Pellegrino bridge is set at intermediary level 1.

The structure of the “Truck Garage” of the San Pellegrino Flagship Factory consists of reinforced concrete floors and beams supported by columns and walls. From the top of the second level rise the impressive arches in concrete lightened with polystyrene. The arches are architectural elements, although they partially absorb the horizontal loads. The foundation system is made up of isolated plinths set at the base of the central pillars of the portals and a direct continuous slab set at the base of the side pillars (ramp area).

Description

Project financing for the construction of a mechanized pedestrian path to service the connection between the Lauro car park and the port of Marina Piccola, in Sorrento.

The technical proposal maintains some fundamental characteristics present in the project drafted by the Municipality, in particular the entry / exit junctions to the Lauro car park and the Marina Piccola and introduces new elements to adapt the service to the changing transport needs of residents and tourists. The proposal is enriched by the possibility of covering the inclined tunnel dug into the tuff using 2 inclined glass lifts. The objectives of the project are: to contribute to the reduction of traffic in the center, absorbing part of the flows to and from the port; to create nice spaces that recall the elements of architecture and local historical aesthetics; reduce the time passed underground and the distance with the tunnel inclination; avoid total cementification by exploiting the performance of the existing rocks; involve local professionals in the realization of the project. The project could be carried out in a public-private partnership and have recourse, as well as private capital, to regional funding for the 2014/2020 Development and Cohesion Fund through the “Pact for the South - Sustainable mobility measures in the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento - I phase “, as foreseen by the agreement between Acamir and the Municipality of Sorrento.

VIALE DE GASPERI PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

PORTELLO UNIT U2, SURVEY OF THE NEW PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Description

The project consists of the creation of a new bicycle-pedestrian connection between QT8 and U2 areas within the “Progetto Portello” P.I.I. (Programma Integrato di Intervento) in Milan.

The structural design of the walkway was drawn up by Arup Italia and consists of a 60-meter bridge in a single span that crosses viale De Gasperi.

The supporting structure is a steel framework, the pavement is resin and there are LED lighting fixtures along the entire path. The connection to the QT8 section at ground level is achieved by means of an elevator and an up / down gangway.

SCE Project has been involved in the construction management and structural construction management.

VIALE SERRA PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Description

The project consists of the construction of a new pedestrian bridge crossing viale Serra from the area of Piazza Valle (sub-sector U3) to Portello park (sector U2) as part of the P.I.I.(Programma Integrato di Intervento) “Progetto Portello” in Milan.

The connection between via Aldo Rossi (at ground level) and Piazza Gino Valle (+ 7 m) at the entrance of the gangway is provided by a spiral staircase / elevator made of reinforced exposed concrete.

The structural design of the walkway was drawn up by Arup Italia and consists of a bridge of about 120 meters, 90 meters of which is a single span. The width of the internal path is about to 4 meters in order to facilitate the presence of both bicycle and pedestrian users.

The gangway consists of a steel deck, held up by suspension cables in a system of two arches, also of steel, connected near the top and by transversal elements next to the supports to the substructures. The pavement is made of resin and there is LED lighting along the entire path. A special feature of the gangway concerns the appearance of its external coverings which are colored in bands with variable tints that reflect the shades of colors ranging from black to “alfa romeo” red.

SESTO SAN GIOVANNI

Description

The redevelopment of the Sesto San Giovanni railway station is part of the goal of reconnecting two parts of the city - old Sesto and a new one that will rise in the former Falck Area – which are today separated by a continuous existing railway line.

The framework of the new station consists of a steel “bridge” resting on the ground on eight reinforced concrete piles and set up in an architectural sense as a thin mono-material slab on which the large photovoltaic glass covering is suspended, allowing the station to be self-sustaining in terms of energy needs. This is an example of what can be achieved with respect to theme of urban regeneration and sustainability.

In terms of movement of rail passengers, the overpass bridge has glass shop units as well as stair and escalator systems and elevators that distribute to the underlying platforms. For the citizens of Sesto it is a comprehensive covered square looking onto the park and “Citta’ della Salute” from a privileged position.

Description

The project involves the requalification of the buildings located between Via della Spiga and Via Senato in the historic center and famous district called “Quadrilatero della Moda”. The lot used to house a noble palace known as Palazzo Treves. The original building overlooked the Naviglio with its main front, while the secondary building overlooked Via della Spiga. The façade on Via della Spiga is made up of a continuous front of three floors above ground, perfectly aligned with the adjacent buildings, while the façade on Via Senato is made up of six floors above ground. The two buildings, the one on Via della Spiga and the one on Via Senato, are connected by a courtyard, divided into three distinct areas at different heights, separated by arcades which connect the two buildings. The project foresees the conservation of the garden in front of via Senato through ordinary maintenance interventions, and the plan/volumes reorganization of the building through extraordinary maintenance interventions and building renovation. The total gross surface will remain unchanged. The restored building complex will host retail activities on the lower floors, and tertiary/office function (instead of current residential use) on the upper floors.

SCE Project is involved in the integrated design (structural, architectural and MEP) for the preliminary, final and executive design phases and in the general construction management.

MINISTERS’ BUILDING

YANGON (MYANMAR)

Description

The restoration of the Ministers’ building in Yangon, Myanmar – also called ‘Secretariat’ and ‘Ministers’ office’- is a project managed by SCE Project ASIA. The final objective is to provide a recovery project that will restore a building of enormous historical value destined to cultural and museum functions.

The renovation project of the Ministers’ building was presented to the public during the “Heritage Preservation” event held in Yangon last September. Thanks to the collaboration between the Italian Embassy in Yangon and the Venice Architectural Association, SCE Project ASIA, as the creator of the event, oversaw the organization of the event at the prestigious Tourism Burma Building and the Rosewood Hotel in Yangon. On this occasion, the Arch. Luigi Campanale, CEO of SCE Project ASIA, opened the debate on the topic “What economic opportunities offer strategic restoration of the historical architectural heritage ?”

SCE Project was entrusted with the verification of the structural state of conservation and materials testing.

THE ANGLE

Description

The requalification works of the building called The Angle has found its origin in requirement of reviving Palazzo Meroni, located in Corso Italia 3 in the heart of Milan, through the inclusion of retail activities on the ground floor and offices in all the remaining floors above ground, while restoring in the meantime the original elegance of the facades.

Palazzo Meroni has a “V” shaped plan, from which derives its new name “The Angle”, with the main views along Corso Italia and via Maddalena, and is planimetrically divided into three buildings:

- a main body of 7 floors above ground and two underground floors, overlooking C.so Italia and via Maddalena;

- a secondary body, with 2 floors above ground and two underground floors, only facing via Maddalena in extension from the main body; - a small volume, with a single floor above ground as well as two underground floors, located inside the courtyard and constructively independent from the other two buildings.

The building The Angle has a vertical supporting structure in reinforced concrete pillars with load-bearing masonry elements in solid bricks limited to the facades and stairwells, thus allowing the creation of flexible and wider interior spaces. The floor decks consist of one-way brick-cement floors while the roof slab of the first basement floor, in the courtyard area, has a solid concrete structure.

The main staircase of the building is made up of stone steps, cantilevered from the surrounding walls, with cast iron parapets. All the balconies of Palazzo Meroni have reinforced concrete cantilevers, with masonry parapets and cement columns.

To better meet the needs specified by the Client and the Design Architect, local restoration interventions were carried out on the structures which are concentrated on the ground floor and on the mezzanine’s floors between ground floor and first floor. In addition to the restoration of structural elements that present deterioration, the geometries of the mezzanines were therefore modified, some existing stairs were demolished, and new connecting structures were created between the floors of Palazzo Meroni.

For the requalification project of the building called The Angle in Corso Italia, SCE Project has been involved in the preliminary, developed and technical structural design and in the structural construction management.

KURSAAL SAN PELLEGRINO TERME (BG)

Description

The creation of a new foyer, independent from the Kursall complex, was essential to the redevelopment the theatre, joined to the San Pellegrino Casino.

In outline, at the beginning of the 20th century, the Casino served as a foyer, welcoming the public and making the theatre accessible which was at a different level from the entrance. The focus was on the art nouveau building, leaving the theater in the background to appear as an addition, without any architectural aspiration.

The project involved the total reconstruction of the theatre hall, which today has a capacity of 320 seats, a control room and dressing rooms. The independent entrance, on the ground floor, has a ticket office with cloakroom.

The overall art nouveau furnishing is contrasted with a “skin” of perforated Corten steel that chromatically recalls and merges with the colors of the forest behind it.

NATIONAL THEATER

PIAZZA PIEMONTE MILAN

Description

The project stems from the specific need to revive the use of the Piazza Piemonte Theater as a place suitable to host major musical theatre productions.

The goal is to relaunch the image of the National Theater through a total renovation, which modifies the internal layout (in line with the necessities of current technology, enlargement of the stage) and the external image (restoration of the facades), while maintaining its original features.

A redevelopment of the Piazza, together with new underground parking, allow a general rethinking of the public space and a chance for the revitalization of the Piazza itself, creating spaces that can actually be used.

Recuperating the façade of the theater therefore has a symbolic role: it means giving value to the public space, restoring a uniform appearance and giving a clear identity to the building. All the closed openings towards the Piazza were restored, all the doors and openings were replaced with wide windows.

All the external decorations made of concrete were restored.

FRANCO PARENTI THEATER

Description

Also known as “Salone Pier Lombardo”, in Milan Teatro Franco Parenti is an institution for independent theatre and study.

The aim of the new theatre project was to link sets and wall structure to create a modern theater machine that would bring with it the character of the original theatre workshop and the desire to create a “show citadel” that would be as open as possible to the urban context. The entire internal spatial distribution has been revised in order to achieve the maximum connection between one environment and another. At the same time, the rooms were acoustically insulated.

The new theater is based on the concept of a continuous stage. The fir wood slats, which normally make up theatrical palaces, run along a longitudinal axis that starts from the entrance, passes through the stage in the ‘Sala Grande’ and reaches the doppia altezza foyer that overlooks the pool.

The renovated theater can accommodate the performance of several shows simultaneously: in the entrance area, in the ‘sala grande’, in the two halls that flank it but also in the foyer, sin dall’ingresso degli uffici e degli artisti dove una pedana posta in vetrina può diventare il luogo per piccoli spettacoli di quartiere.

The reinforced concrete skeleton retained from the existing structure has been buffered and isolated. Piping is exposed, and has been painted with blue, characterizing all the ceilings of the theater except for those in the great hall, where large acoustic panels in curved wood cover the room, conveying the sound towards the end rows of the audience.

RESTORATION OF EX MERCATI GENERALI AREA

Decription

The former “Mercati Generali”, located along via Ostiense, about two kilometers from the Aurelian Walls and the Pyramid of Cestius, are part of a highly distinguished area in a key position, located close to the old town and the railway in Rome.

The original project of the Rome “Mercati Generali” was drawn up in 1909 and the construction of the first buildings began in 1913 but was interrupted during the First World War. Over the years the original project was subjected to various modifications that changed its form until when in 2004 the general markets were located in a more peripheral area. The area then became the subject of a large-scale urban project, arising from the need to redevelop the entire Ostiense-Marconi district through the reclamation of areas for public services, green areas, plant and infrastructure.

The current project recalls the geometric matrix of the original project restoring the existing buildings of the Recinto (Ring), building A, the fish market pavilion, building B and buildings C and D. New buildings and squares have also been planned, creating a multifunctional complex which includes: a shopping district, a residence for students, a multiscreen cinema, a multi-storey car park, a new library, a fitness center, an elderly care center, a restaurant and a religious center.

VILLA REALE

Description

Construction of the Royal Villa of Monza was started in 1775 and designed by architect Piermarini.

The structure follows the typical pattern of the eighteenth-century suburban villas, set on a strict framework with side wings at right angles to the central body.

The main building and focus of the renovation project is characterized by two floors intended for the most important functions, as it contained the apartments of the sovereigns and the representative rooms. The side wings were intended for housing while the mezzanines were for service staff.

The interior spaces of the Villa are marked by long corridors that have the function of distribution for the rooms that overlook and communicate with each other.

The approach to the recovery of the rooms of Villa Reale of Monza was based on the utmost care and the utmost respect for the existing, pursuing wherever possible the criterion of minimum intervention and conservation.

To date, the Villa corresponds largely to the original project of Piermarini both as regards the structures and the distribution system.

SCE Project was involved in the phase of structural work management throughout the process of recovery and enhancement of the building.

MEGASTORE

Description

The new H&M store, located in the heart of Milan, is the result of a careful recovery project of a heritage building located in Via San Raffaele 1.

The intervention concerns the transformation of a portion of the current disused building, once a hotel, to premises for commercial use.

The design of the new space was conceived starting from a systematic set of demolitions and reconstruction of new portions, with the aim of enriching the existing space with new functional and architectural features.

The existing building, of eight floors plus two underground levels, is of traditional masonry and was stripped out at its center to make room for distribution systems and a new and bright light steel frame glass roof.

RESTORATION OF EX CARMINATI-TOSELLI AREA – FABBRICA DEL VAPORE

Description

This project concerns the main building “Cathedral”. Besides some simplification and rationalisation of previous work, the building was made functionally autonomous by creating different spaces. The positioning of the catering and reception areas was planned in the west wing; moreover the façade on via Messina was reopened and directed outwards. The aim was also to achieve the highest degree of spatial flexibility to host a variety of temporary events in the large multi-purpose hall, reducing permanent superstructures to a minimum and favoring the idea of setting up installations made for temporary exhibitions. In the opposite wing, two reinforced concrete slabs have been created, which by exploiting the current height will allow the spaces to be joined on three levels. The existing walls, entirely of exposed brick, were almost completely preserved. With the sole exception of the loggias, an aerated crawlspace was built inside the building to accommodate the subsequent paving. The roof is supported by a wooden structure similar to the original one, in terms of both materials and shape, and will consist of a wooden plank with overlapping insulating panels on top and above these a covering layer of interlocking tiles. The transparent part of the roof will be made of glass panels supported by a metal structure. The bar is separated from the opposite covered square by a completely transparent skin, consisting of a full-height glass wall tilted five degrees on the vertical axis. Therefore, from the square it will be possible to fully appreciate the brightness and grandeur of the bar space.

In the centre of Milan, the architect Giuseppe Sommaruga built an Art Nouveau building during the Belle Époque that a century later asastudio would respectfully yet irreverently restore. Inside this monumental shell, a home was created that is quintessentially contemporary.

RESTORATION OF BORGO VILLA SALETTA

PALAIA (PI)

Description

Villa Saletta is a private property of 1,760 hectares immersed in the hills and vineyards of Tuscany. The fortified village includes a central building and surrounding buildings, the oldest of which dates back to medieval times. There are approximately 12,800 m2 of existing buildings with the permission to build an additional 4,200 m2 of new buildings (including technical areas, construction systems and machinery). The site covers 43,000 m2 in all, including historic gardens and olive groves. The architectural project involves the conversion of the whole village into a diffused hotel, therefore the interventions were made to optimize the new layout of the spaces:

- Adaptation of existing buildings in order to create an important hotel complex. To preserve historic and artistic environments, it is possible to create additional volumes in the basements of the buildings to house services such as air conditioning, heating, fire protection, etc.

- Construction of a parking space for up to 130 guests (located on the east side of the back of the building and out of sight) and associated service roads.

- Creation of additional underground volumes to house the air conditioning system, water system, fire extinguishing system, drinking water and water storage tanks for the fire protection system, the power generator, electrical equipment and other minor functions.

- Construction of a reception hall for 200 people behind the private chapel (on the lower level) with a private hanging garden, a new exclusive bar, the Altana, a health and wellness center of about 935 square meters inside the historic Frantoio.

- Installation of a swimming pool on the west side of the village.

RESTORATION OF ANSALDO 16 NORTH FACTORY

MILAN

Description

The Ansaldo 16 Nord project is the result of restructuring part of the former Ansaldo industrial plant, whose entire exterior brickwork, parts of the internal structures, inter-floor slabs of reinforced concrete and parts of the shed roofs of reinforced concrete and metal have been preserved. The factory building was partially demolished, resulting in an internal courtyard with exposed brick façade and doors and wide metal frame windows. The same type of door and window frames was also used for the external façade, with the aim of reproducing the appearance of the industrial building of the early twentieth century in a modern tone. A series of real estate units of various sizes for business use was created inside the building, integrating the existing floors with metal mezzanines and inserting glazed patios, so as to maximize the contribution of natural lighting. Part of the project houses the multistorey garage, integrated into the existing building body. The new shed roofs were partially created by recovering and repositioning the existing metal trusses and partly by creating new structures with similar characteristics and materials to the existing ones.
