Fisher Island Day School
A Campus Designed with Learning in Mind
Known for preparing students for success in the most challenging independent school programs in South Florida, Fisher Island Day School may be one of Miami’s best kept secrets. Fully accredited by the Florida Council of Independent schools, Fisher Island Day School offers low student-teacher ratios, extraordinary facilities, differentiated programming, state-of-the art technology, and dynamic enrichment offerings, all in a nurturing, family oriented setting.
Founded in 2004, the school was quickly thriving with an Early Learning program and rigorous academic program through grade five. The middle school program was added in 2021 supported by extensive campus improvements and expansions including a gymnasium with multi purpose capacity and a full service kitchen. A highly skilled faculty was recruited to deliver the rigorous middle school curriculum.
While a majority of students reside on Fisher Island, several bus routes bring students from Miami Beach and surrounding areas. Afternoon buses allow all students to participate in after-school enrichment programming. The middle school interscholastic program offers competitive sports for students. Additionally, opportunities are created for the younger “sharks” to compete against area schools in several sports.
Children feel safe in this beautiful, cloistered environment. An intentionally designed small enrollment creates a sense of community, for students and parents. Every child is known by name. A hands-on administration encourages differentiated learning to make the most of students’ individual strengths. Teachers schedule “extra help hours” for students needing additional support or returning from an extended absence. Most teachers hold advanced degrees. Professional development for faculty is encouraged and supported at all levels.
Fisher Island Day School is a wonderful, safe place for students to begin their educational journey. Thoughtfully designed policies on internet access and cell phone use allow students to develop without distractions. A full-time counselor encourages relationship building and self awareness, critical for children during these formative elementary years.
More can be learned by visiting the school’s website at www.fids.org or contacting Mary Reiling, Director of Admissions, mreiling@fids.org.

Classroom Design on Student Performance
Classroom design has evolved significantly in the last century, mirroring changes in pedagogical philosophies, teaching methods, and societal expectations, particularly knowledge acquisition and workforce readiness. Every era has also witnessed thoughtful research on school environments, technological advancements, and a shared aspiration to create improved and enjoyable learning spaces. Indeed, while classrooms today reflect societal and technological trends, they hold even greater significance as tangible expressions of an educator's theories, philosophies, and values all geared toward enriching the overall learning experience.
In a year-long pilot study on classroom environments conducted by the University of Salford, findings revealed that various elements, such as room orientation, temperature, acoustics, and lighting, had significant potential to either enhance or impede academic progress by as much as 25 percent over a year. According to Professor Peter Barrett from the School of the Built Environment at the university, "The impact identified is in fact greater than we imagined." Given that the architecture of space design, also referred to as built environment, plays a significant role in learning, there is every reason to be excited about its future potential. Here we explore the evolution of
classroom design and look at the influence of inventive and innovative approaches on academic performance.
In the 20th century, the second industrial revolution impacted the economy, technology and society. Laws banning child labor had far-reaching effects on various aspects of life. Consequently, school enrollments soared, leading to a surge in demand for education, resulting in larger class sizes and requiring more structured classroom layouts. Mass education led to a push for standardization, uniform curriculum, and consistent classroom design. Classroom layouts revealed a clear emphasis on a teacher-centered approach to instruction, with rows of fixed desks facing teachers on raised platforms. This structured design reflected the demands of an industrial society, aiming to prioritize efficiency, order, and control to prepare students for the workforce in factories.
The Great Depression's profound impact on education in the United States was fueled by severe financial hardships experienced by families during this decade of economic shock, leading to high unemployment rates and widespread poverty. The challenges during this period emphasized the need for innovative and cost-effective solutions, transforming the education-

al system by promoting more flexible, practical, and adaptable learning spaces. Several design approaches revolved around minimizing energy costs by reducing reliance on artificial lighting during daytime hours. Classrooms were purposefully designed with larger windows to optimize natural daylight, and building designs incorporated access to outdoor spaces, enhancing both learning and recreational experiences. The Great Depression played a pivotal role in shaping functional, efficient, and student-centered learning environments, even with limited resources. The Great Depression's influence on the design of buildings, classrooms, labs, and equipment still shape essential elements of today's learning environments.
By the 1960s, the Open Classroom movement emerged after the milestone Brown decision, where the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. While the ruling did not transform education (or the country) overnight, it paved the path toward broader under-
standing and recognition that all students should have equal access to quality education, regardless of race, gender, or disability. With a growing focus on fairness and inclusivity in education, teaching approaches shifted away from traditional learning methods. Educators understood how crucial it was to consider individual student needs and saw the value of creating learning environments that support and help everyone thrive. The Open Classroom movement embraced more progressive methods, like collaborative and self-directed learning, providing a tailored experience to promote active learning and engagement. Classroom design also underwent a transformation, transitioning from a rigid rowand-column system to a more adaptable and flexible setup where students could engage as groups in broader learning experiences. Although the Open Class movement faced criticism and encountered challenges, its impact on learning approaches still resonates and continues to influence design today. Continuedofpage14

Concepts that emerged from the Open Classroom Movement
1. Flexible Seating and Furniture: Movable and adaptable furniture, including modular desks, flexible seating, and portable whiteboards.
2. Technology Integration: Smartboards, interactive displays, computers, and digital devices for active and personalized learning.
3. Collaborative Spaces: Designated areas for group work, discussions, and projects to foster teamwork and problem-solving.
4. Comfort and Ergonomics: Prioritizing comfortable seating, proper lighting, and ergonomic design for student well-being and concentration.
5. Natural Light and Biophilic Design: Maximizing natural light and incorporating nature-inspired elements to enhance mood and creativity.
6. Differentiated Learning Zones: Designing specialized areas for various learning modalities and subjects.
7. Student Display Areas: Allowing space for showcasing student work and achievements.
8. Inclusive Design: Ensuring equitable access for students with diverse needs and abilities through universal design principles.
9. Personalized Learning: Providing resources and tools tailored to individual student interests and strengths.
10. Green and Sustainable Elements: Incorporating energy-efficient lighting and eco-friendly materials for sustainability.
11. Multi-Modal Learning: Facilitating multi-modal learning experiences to cater to different learning styles.
12. Access to Outdoor Learning Spaces: Integrating outdoor learning spaces or access to nature for additional learning opportunities
Following the Open Classroom movement, several trends emerged, seeking a middle ground between student-centered approaches and structured learning methods. Some trends advocated for a return to a more traditional focus, emphasizing core academic subjects and adopting a teacher-centered model. Alternative approaches also surfaced, blending student choice with guided learning to create a more balanced and personalized experience. The following are some frameworks that emerged following the Open Classroom concept:
• Back to Basics Movement
• Standardized Testing and Accountability
• Differentiated Instruction
• Project-Based Learning
• STEM and STEAM Education
• Blended Learning
• EdTech Integration
• Flipped Classroom
• Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
• Inclusive Education
• Personalized Learning
As seen throughout history, it is essential that modern classroom designs evolve as student needs continue to change. Innovative design elements must support diverse and flexible learning experiences for all students. These elements are critical in creating and sustaining engaging environments that inspire creativity, foster critical thinking, and prepare students to thrive in an ever-changing world. This need was most evident during COVID-19 in 2020. The interruption to education caused by the pandemic significantly influenced classroom design and learning. Sudden closures of schools prompted an urgent reimagining of classroom design, prompting a rapid shift towards technology integration, flexible spaces, and hybrid learning models to adapt to changing circumstances. Social distancing measures were adopted, leading to rearranged classrooms with spaced-out desks and modified seating arrangements. Staggered schedules were implemented to allow for smaller class sizes, while outdoor spaces provided safer learning environments. Additionally, classrooms integrated more technology to support hybrid and remote learning models through virtual instruction and interactive learning experiences. Many of these changes have become permanent fixtures as schools adapt to evolving circumstances and explore innovative ways to deliver quality education in the face of future challenges.

"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."
- Steve Jobs
An intentionally designed classroom has the power to nurture a positive learning environment. A well-designed learning space can create a conducive environment that enhances engagement, focus, and collaboration among students, which in turn has a profound impact on students' motivation, cognitive development, and academic performance and achievement. For example, natural lighting has been shown to positively affect mood and attention, leading to increased productivity. Integrating technology, such as interactive whiteboards or multimedia equipment, can facilitate dynamic and interactive lessons, fostering active participation and understanding. Flexible seating arrangements offer students the freedom to choose a comfortable learning space that suits their individual preferences and needs. This contributes to a sense of ownership and comfort. Incorporating nature-inspired elements, such as plants or nature-themed artwork, can calm students, reducing stress and promoting overall well-being. Ultimately, built education plays a crucial role in influencing student performance and learning outcomes.
Built education (built environment) empowers students to become active learners, collaborators, and critical thinkers. Today, traditional classrooms with rows of desks have gradually given way to spaces that consider multiple factors to optimize the learning experience, such as natural lighting, flexible furniture, aesthetics, and technology. It is important to note that current design practices continue to mirror pedagogical evolution driven by research, the demands of society, and advancements in technology. We must also remember that new technologies may address certain challenges but could also give rise to new ones. To create effective learning environments, there must be a thoughtful and transparent community with a feedback protocol that works. By implementing rigorous standards in classroom design, centered around effectiveness and efficiency, and the honest evaluation of the built environment after use, we can establish a design process that prioritizes reflection and feedback, and encourages intentional approaches to enhance academic performance and success.

Esports
and gaming concepts in Education
) What is Esports?
analysts, and other support staff. Like any other sport, a season is structured to include a pre-season, a regular season, playoffs, grand finals events, and an off-season. Unlike traditional sports, some leagues may have multiple seasons a year that can vary by game with some seasons divided into different stages or splits. Both competitions often have an audience watching online or attending live events.
Esports covers a wide range of video games across different genres, including first-person shooters (FPS), multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs), real-time strategy (RTS), fighting games, sports and racing simulations, battle royales, card games, and more.
) Benefits of Competitive Gaming
In spite of their differences, esports and traditional sports share similar elements like competition, teamwork, strategy, communication, and the passion they inspire in players and fans. Esports are constantly evolving, creating new genres and innovative game hybrids. The opportunities continue to expand as the industry grows, with many players and organizations actively working to address concerns and promote a healthier environment.
Esports offers a range of benefits for students, making it an inclusive and engaging activity. Firstly, it fosters inclusion by expanding the pool of participants to include disabled students, providing them with the opportunity to be part of an organized sport. In an NFHS article, the coach of the Rocky Mountain High School esports team in Colorado stated, “What I’ve learned along the way is that esports is an opportunity for everyone, and we’ve had a lot of different kinds of students: kids that come from different countries, kids that have disabilities, that can all participate and compete at a high level.”
Secondly, esports promotes collaboration among students. A Pew Research Report highlights that video games play a vital role in teen friendships, creating social interactions and a sense of belonging. Through esports, students learn to coordinate strategies, communicate effectively, and develop trust and respect, essential aspects of successful collaboration.
Top Games
in Collegiate and High School Esports
League of Legends is a team-based strategy (MOBA) game where two teams of five powerful champions face off to destroy the opponent’s base.
Rocket League is a unique combination of racing and soccer, played with rocket-powered cars.
Overwatch is a team-based first-person shooter (FPS) game featuring a diverse cast of heroes with unique abilities.
Super Smash Bros. is a crossover fighting game featuring characters from various Nintendo games.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) is a widely played FPS game where teams compete in objective-based matches.
Defense of the Ancients 2 (Dota 2) is another prominent (MOBA) game that features two teams competing on a symmetrical map to destroy the opponent's Ancient, a large structure located at the heart of their base.
Fortnite is a battle royale game known for its unique combination of shooter and building mechanics, where players must scavenge for weapons, resources, and equipment to survive and eliminate opponents.
Call of Duty is a popular tactical (FPS) game that typically includes several modes: Single-player campaign (missions and battles), multiplayer (deathmatch and capture the flag), and cooperative (mission completions, survival efforts, boss battles, and progression experiences) modes with unique storylines ranging from historical conflicts, modern warfare, or sci-fi settings.
2023 / PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE | 33
Furthermore, the appeal of esports lies in its engaging and entertaining nature. As a fast-growing sport, it offers variety, allowing players to participate in different games, enhancing the overall experience.
Lastly, esports enhances adaptability and cognitive agility. The dynamic scenarios and challenges presented in esports necessitate quick thinking, analytical skills, creative approaches, and the ability to make split-second decisions under pressure. This aspect of esports encourages students to develop adaptive thinking skills, valuable in various aspects of life.
) Important Concerns to Consider
Although there are unique opportunities by participating in esports, it is also imperative to consider drawbacks. A few commonly cited concerns include exposure to violence, eye strain and health issues, and a sedentary lifestyle due to long hours of sitting. Another concern is the potential for addiction. “Gaming disorder” was officially added to the ICD (International Classification of Diseases) by the World Health Organization in 2018. It is defined as “a pattern of gaming behavior characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.”
To be diagnosed, the pattern must be severe enough to result in personal, family, social, educational, and other damage, evident for at least 12 months.
It is important to note that while these concerns exist, they do not necessarily apply to all individuals involved in esports. It is imperative for parents to keep open and ongoing dialogue, enforce responsible gaming habits, and provide guidance as well as supervision.
) Promoting Healthy Gaming
Promote responsible, age-appropriate game selection when allowing access to games. Many games, especially those with violent themes, are subject to content rating systems that help guide parents, guardians, and educational institutions with appropriate age recommendations. Ensure that your child is exposed to games that align not just with their age, but also with their maturity level and your family's personal values. Set boundaries through monitoring AND regulating gameplay. Your involvement should communicate your expectations and help establish clear boundaries regarding screen time, appropriate game content, and gaming experiences. This also means staying up-todate with trends and developments to help you make informed decisions. Emphasize balance by setting time limits, encouraging breaks, and prioritizing physical and outdoor activities. A balanced lifestyle will help create a healthier and more sustainable environment. In addition to encouraging responsible gaming behaviors, these strategies encourage positive behaviors in general and can contribute to a child's overall well-being.
) The Bottom Line
Esports has seen significant growth over the past decade likely due to strong elements of engagement, inclusion, and collaboration. The consensus among experts, educators, and the esports community is that it can provide a range of benefits and opportunities if challenges are acknowledged, monitored, and addressed consistently. The overall impact of esports can be a positive experience providing students with skill development, academic opportunities, career pathways, personal growth, and community. The National Federation of State High School Associations advises that student-athletes should find a balance between practices, games, school work, proper nutrition, social time, and sleep. In order to maximize the benefits and minimize potential pitfalls of esports, it's important to advocate for responsible gaming habits, encourage a balanced lifestyle, provide guidance and support, and create a positive gaming environment.

Health Literacy
It’s been said that “the greatest wealth is health.” Most of us take it for granted until we experience health issues ourselves. Over time, we become aware of the priceless gift of good health and learn to appreciate it more. Many of us feel some level of regret, wondering what we could have done differently to prevent certain diseases or discomforts.
You are not alone. Limited health literacy is a national issue, which can result in preventable diseases, more visits to the hospital, and higher healthcare costs.
Although many health issues are outside of our control, some can be averted, such as stretching and warming up to prevent injury while working out. Health issues tend to follow the snowball effect, starting as seemingly insignificant discomforts and slowly building up into an avalanche if unmanaged.
The good news is that health literacy information is on the rise so that we can educate the younger generations on how to care for themselves, along with taking better care of ourselves.
44 | PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2023
and Literacy Series
Learning
What is Health Literacy?
The CDC defines personal health literacy as “the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.”
The most recent study on this topic was conducted in 2003 by the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL), which assessed the health literacy of U.S. adults. The 4 literacy levels defined by the NAAL were below basic, basic, intermediate, and proficient. Basic/ below basic skills include knowing what is permissible to consume before a health exam based on instructions given. Intermediate skills include determining when to take a prescribed medicine in relation to eating time. Lastly, proficient skills include navigating the health care system. The results of the study were astounding. Only 12 percent of the participants had proficient skills, 53 percent had intermediate skills, and 36 percent had below basic/basic. In general, the health literacy level increased as the educational level increased. The solution is clear - parents need to educate and implement these skills at home.
Why is health literacy important?
According to the study's findings, there is a significant correlation between low health literacy and poor health, leading to an
increase in preventable hospital visits. Another notable study conducted by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research focused on Oral Health. The study revealed concerning statistics, indicating that over 50 percent of children aged 5 to 9 have at least one cavity or filling, and this percentage rises to 78 percent among 17-year-olds. Cavities, which are preventable, were found to be the most prevalent chronic childhood disease. Cavities were found to be five times more common than asthma.
How can we teach health literacy skills at home for all ages?
Encourage good hygiene habits with your morning and evening routine. Make it a fun and essential part of your everyday routine to brush your teeth. Kids should start brushing their teeth as soon as their first tooth erupts. Brushing teeth twice a day for 2 minutes is vital. It is even more critical to brush your teeth before bed, as cavities tend to form overnight.
Flossing daily is important as well as brushing cannot reach in between the teeth. One great way to establish the flossing habit for kids is to use floss sticks that come in different colors. As kids reach adolescence, consider adding deodorant as part of their daily routine.
2023 / PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE | 45
Have your kids schedule their doctor’s appointments. office to make an appointment to make them more engaged. You can guide them with how to call, what to mention, and the date/time to make the appointment. Adolescents can manage their insurance cards and learn the basics about their health insurance coverage. It would also be helpful for them to write down a list of questions they have for the doctor to have a sense of agency over their health. A general guideline is to visit the dentist 1-2 times a year (starting at age 1) and your primary doctor once a year.
Another important lesson to teach them is to get a second opinion when needed. If something doesn’t make sense, visit a different doctor for a new perspective. More information can be helpful when making an informed decision about your health.
Eat the rainbow and learn about nutrition. Challenge your family to eat the rainbow. This means that you aim to add foods of different colors and varieties into your meals and snacks so that you can guarantee a good variety of nutrients and vitamins. Knowing what each color group helps with can also make it more appealing to include these in

Implement wellness daily habits for both mental and physical health. Physical health refers to your body's well-being, taking into account your absence of disease to fitness level. Practical ways to strengthen your physical health include washing hands, coughing into your elbow or tissue, getting exercise, spending time outdoors, and sleeping adequately. You can turn exercise into a family activity by walking together after dinner.
In addition to prioritizing physical health, mental health is essential. Carving out quiet time to pray, meditate or read, if even 5 minutes a day, can benefit your mental health. The key is minimizing moments of screen time when possible, such as before bed and during mealtimes.
As parents, we hope to raise future adults who can take good care of themselves and their families. The best way for kids to learn any skill is to have it modeled at home. Caring for yourself not only impacts you but those around you. If you are rested, joyful, and healthy, you will likely be the best
Our days consist of tiny decisions that significantly impact our lives. Arming our kids with selfconfidence and resourcefulness will help them gain autonomy over their health. Making the one seemingly small decision to teach your kids about health literacy will significantly benefit them in the long run.
