SCIENCE BEHIND THE SCENES
From astronomy and chemistry to marine biology and technology, there is something for everyone at Summer Camp at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science! This award-winning program at the museum’s campus in Downtown Miami provides a rich, hands-on experience that makes learning fun. Taking place weekly from Monday, June 10 through Friday, August 9, Frost Science’s Summer Camp is designed to spark a sense of curiosity and excitement in children ages 5-15
through different week-long camps themed around the amazing science featured at the museum.
Campers will launch into the outer reaches of our universe, explore chemical reactions, try their hand at coding, and so much more during these unforgettable weeks! They will also get to explore interactive science exhibitions, meet the animals in the Aquarium, and journey through the universe in the state-of-the-art Frost Planetarium.
Frost Science’s Summer Camp includes a new Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program for middle school students ages 12-15. They’ll gain leadership skills and community service hours, learn about various science disciplines, and create a scientific resource or community action project under the guidance of a mentor. At the end of the camp week, CIT’s will lead and facilitate the activity they developed to a group of campers. It’s a great opportunity for them to build their resumes with experience at a science museum and they’ll receive a recommendation letter for their time as a CIT.

In the world of summer activities, camps are often seen as more than just places to keep children occupied. Despite some common misconceptions, these summer escapes boast a wealth of diverse programs catering to a wide range of interests and abilities. Far from being simple childcare centers, summer camps provide dynamic environments for exploration, learning, and skill development. For ages, they’ve been celebrated as playgrounds for adventure, exploration, and personal growth—bringing along a wonderful blend of creativity, enjoyment, and companionship. Most importantly, they offer unique opportunities as learning hubs, with STEM education playing a bigger part in activities at camps. In today’s dynamic landscape, proficiency
in science, technology, engineering, and math is becoming increasingly important as they all play a role in preparing children for the future. Through exploring the changes taking place at traditional camps, it becomes clear how integrating STEM concepts into exciting activities enhances the summer experience and mitigates summer learning loss.
Technology’s increasing role in education gained significant momentum in the late 20th century, marking a turning point in a process that’s been occurring for several decades. Technology has revolutionized how learning is approached and dramatically transformed how children learn and develop personally.
As society continues to embrace the digital era, camps are adopting these advancements to enhance experiences and engage campers more intentionally. One noticeable shift in summer programs is the inclusion of STEM education into their activities and program offerings, marking a transition from their original recreational focus to now being more educational. One response to this shift was the emergence of specialized camps that exclusively focus on STEM disciplines, offering an immersive environment and deeper exploration of these subjects for those with specific interests seeking targeted learning opportunities. Another response was the integration of STEM concepts in traditional summer camp activities. This experiential approach offers campers opportunities to explore new interests through hands-on activities in a more informal setting. Traditional camps now introduce campers to coding, marine science, artificial intelligence, game design, medicine, and forensics, blending classic camp fun with educational experiences. Below are four strategies camps are using to promote STEM education at traditional day camps.
STEM-themed Sessions or Tracks
Some summer camps offer specific STEM-themed sessions or tracks. These encompass a wide range of engaging fields such as robotics, coding, astronomy, physics experiments, and engineering challenges. Campers are given dedicated time to design, build, and program robots using LEGO Mindstorms or other robotics kits. Some camps also leverage their natural surroundings to inspire engineering projects where campers design and build structures using natural materials. They learn about mechanical engineering, coding, and solving problems sustainably while working on different challenges and projects using design principles.

They may also participate in nature walks and scavenger hunts that require observational skills and biodiversity awareness as they learn to identify and document various plant and animal species.
Space Exploration
Some summer camps offer space-themed activities, allowing campers to explore the wonders of the universe. They may learn about planets, build model rockets, or even participate in projects such as building solar ovens. These activities incorporate physics, aerodynamics, and solar energy concepts while teaching campers about astronomy, astrophysics, environmental science, planetary science, and so much more.
