EMPOWERING

DYSLEXIC STUDENTS THE ROIG ACADEMY'S TRANSFORMATIVE BLEND OF ORTON-GILLINGHAM AND IB EDUCATION At The Roig Academy, our students are on a remarkable educational journey where dyslexic students not only learn to read but flourish in an environment that challenges, collaborates, and inspires. Established over 23 years ago and an International Baccalaureate (IB) school for 8 years, we have successfully merged the renowned Orton-Gillingham approach with the IB program, creating an unparalleled educational experience for our students. With over 50 years of excellence, the IB PYP offers a holistic development approach, inquiry-based learning, transdisciplinary integration, and a global perspective. We have witnessed the profound impact that the integration of these methodologies has had on our students. Here are the key insights: 1. The Orton-Gillingham approach, widely recognized for its effectiveness in supporting students with dyslexia, takes a multi-sensory, structured, and sequential approach to teaching reading. By employing this method, students develop essential literacy skills, laying a strong foundation for academic achievement. 2. The IB program places emphasis on critical thinking, problem-solving, and project-based learning. By fostering collaboration and promoting public speaking through exhibitions and presentations, students acquire invaluable skills that extend well beyond the classroom, equipping them for success in the future workforce.

3. The symbiotic integration of the Orton-Gillingham approach and the IB program extends beyond the development of reading skills, fostering growth across a wide range of subject areas. This dynamic combination nurtures students' intellectual abilities in diverse fields, providing them with a comprehensive educational foundation. By employing this comprehensive methodology, we strive to foster the holistic development of each child, going beyond academic excellence to cultivate cultural awareness, empathy, and respect. Empowered Education

Understanding the Benefit of Customized Learning I

n the world of education, words carry significant weight. Phrases such as "learning," "assessment," "approach," and "achievement" are more than just words; they represent ideas, expectations, and methods that shape the way students learn. In the ever-evolving landscape of education, educational terminology is constantly evolving and morphing thanks to ongoing research, technological advancements, cultural shifts, and the evolving requirements of students. Terminology, however, serves as the foundation of educational communication and informs the development and execution of learning strategies. The language of education evolves in tandem with teaching and learning practices. As we analyze several aspects of student learning in this article, we will compare three near-synonymous but very different learning approaches. Individualized, differentiated, and personalized learning put students at the center of their education, even if the specific methods may vary among different teachers or schools. These approaches focus on meaningful connection and flexibility in learning so that students can tailor their experiences to their needs, giving them greater control over their educational journey. They also foster ongoing improvement, increase student engagement, and aim for improved learning outcomes. Customized learning is a complex puzzle. In this puzzle, the integration of technology, data analytics, and teacher expertise forms the essential pieces that, when properly combined, create a clear and complete picture of success. 16

| PRI VATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2023

Individualized Learning Individualized learning is a powerful teacher-centered approach that prioritizes and tailors instruction to meet the specific needs and learning pace of each student. It recognizes that every learner is distinct and advances through their educational journey at their own rate. In individualized learning, teachers use assessments and data to identify a student's strengths, opportunities for improvement, and preferred learning methods. They then offer learning paths tailored to each student's abilities, interests, and needs through choice-based differentiation, offering set choices that give students some control over their learning experience. As a result, the curriculum and teaching methods are carefully adjusted to match these insights, guaranteeing a learning experience that is highly effective and customized to each student. Individualized learning offers several advantages that make it a valuable approach to education. Firstly, it allows students to learn at their own pace, ensuring they thoroughly understand each concept before moving forward. This not only boosts their confidence but also reduces frustration, creating a more positive learning experience. Secondly, educators can provide precise, targeted support to address the unique challenges each student may face. This personalized assistance helps students overcome obstacles and promotes skill development tailored to their individual needs.

Moreover, individualized learning fosters increased student engagement. When students have a say in how they learn and can take ownership of their educational journey, they become more motivated and responsible for their progress. Lastly, the practice of tailoring instruction to individual needs often leads to improved academic outcomes. Students gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter, which contributes to their overall success in learning. These advantages collectively highlight the effectiveness of individualized learning in promoting both student growth and academic achievement.

Differentiated Learning Differentiated learning is an effective teaching approach that centers on adjusting teaching methods, adapting content, and assessments to cater to the varying abilities and learning styles in a classroom. In a differentiated classroom, educators, acknowledging that students don't learn in the same way or at the same pace, are committed to constructing an inclusive learning environment that caters to the needs of each student, fostering a diverse and supportive educational atmosphere. Differentiated learning offers numerous benefits that make it a compelling approach to education. Firstly, it champions inclusivity, ensuring that all students, irrespective of their learning abilities, can access and engage with the curriculum. This not only supports diverse learners but also upholds the principle of equitable education. Secondly, differentiated learning introduces a variety of teaching strategies aimed at accommodating different learning styles. This multiplicity of approaches fosters a more engaging and enjoyable learning experience for students, making education both accessible and enjoyable. Furthermore, this approach encourages students to stretch their abilities, promoting personal and academic growth. By tailoring instruction to individual needs, differentiated learning allows students to progress at their own pace and reach their full potential. Lastly, differentiated learning contributes to educational equity by allowing every student to succeed, regardless of their starting point. This ensures that no student is left behind, creating a fair and just educational environment. These advantages collectively emphasize the effectiveness of differentiated learning in promoting inclusive, engaging, and equitable education.

Personalized Learning In individualized learning, teachers adjust the difficulty level of tasks or materials; however, in personalized learning, students are in control of their educational journey, actively participating in the learning process with guidance on the academic criteria from the teacher. The goal of personalized learning is to tailor not just the content and difficulty of the course but also the pace, style, and learning plans to meet individual interests, needs, and preferences. The primary distinction between individualized and personalized learning lies in the extent of customization. The benefits of personalized learning make it an appealing educational option. It places learner autonomy at the forefront, giving students the power to take control of their education. This fosters self-directed learning and encourages the development of critical thinking skills. Secondly, personalized learning offers a significant level of flexibility. Students can choose when, where, and how they access learning materials, accommodating diverse schedules and preferences. This flexibility ensures that learning fits into each student's unique life circumstances. It is also important to note that personalized learning enhances engagement by aligning the content with the interests and passions of the students. It is significantly easier to motivate and engage students when they are studying subjects that they are passionate about. Lastly, personalized learning fully embraces the concept of mastery-based learning. This means that students advance to new topics or skills only when they demonstrate mastery of a prior concept or skill. This approach ensures that students have a solid understanding of foundational concepts before moving on to more advanced material. The main benefits of personalized learning can be summarized in four ways: learner empowerment, flexibility, engagement, and mastery. To find the most effective approach, teachers should determine their goals and choose the method that aligns most closely with these objectives. The first step for teachers should be to examine their students, their needs, and their preferences. Some students excel with one-on-one instruction, while others thrive with differentiated approaches. It is also important to consider the size of the class, as larger classes can make it difficult to provide

individualized instruction. Lastly, they should highlight the significance of integrating students' interests for engagement and motivation, and establish the practice of effective assessment methods and time management. When individual knowledge levels and learning styles are taken into account, along with parents' input and an educator's personal teaching philosophy, customized approaches can improve results, foster engagement, spark motivation and map out a clear path to success. To further clarify these approaches: individualized learning tailors instruction to the unique needs of each student, differentiated learning adapts teaching methods to cater to diverse abilities, and personalized learning places students at the center of their educational journey, allowing them to shape their learning experience. These approaches are like three unique musical instruments, each with its own melodies. They may share the stage and seem harmonious at first, but their individual tunes carry specific rhythms, symbolizing their unique educational approaches. 

A ROADMAP TO EXCELLENCE Choosing a Private School with Confidence and Purpose

T

here are approximately 30,492 K-12 private schools in the United States (according to 2019-20 data from the National Center for Education Statistics), each with its own unique approach to education. With countless educational methodologies, parents considering private education for their children have an overwhelming number of choices. Whether you're new to the world of private education or considering a change, this guide aims to empower you on your journey toward making a well-informed and confident school choice.

Step 2: Needs Assessment – Yours and Your Child's

The Timeline: Starting Early for Success

Family Values: Seek a school that resonates with your family's values. Look for an institution that not only imparts important academic knowledge but also helps your child develop strong moral and ethical values that align with your family's principles.

Selecting a private school is not a one-size-fits-all process. To ensure a smooth journey, we recommend following a 1-2 year timeline. This allows ample time for research, visits, interviews, testing, and applying. Early planning equips you with the time needed to thoroughly explore your options and make a confident decision.

Step 1: Begin with Basics – Location Matters Begin by doing some basic research to create a list of potential schools. Location is often the first consideration for families. Location is important not only for convenience but also for your active involvement in school events and the school community. Keep in mind that what's considered "close" can vary from one family to another. Some may find a 20-mile commute manageable, while others may prefer a school closer to work or family. Identify places in your daily life that make it easy to be an active part of the school community. The goal is to choose a school that comfortably fits into your daily routine without causing undue stress. 36

| PRI VATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2023

Understanding the needs of both your family and your child is paramount when searching for the right school. To embark on this journey, begin by asking a series of questions: Child's Needs: First and foremost, consider what your child needs to learn. Explore their preferred learning style and identify any specific social, academic, emotional, or practical requirements they may have.

Opportunities for Growth: Assess whether the school offers ample opportunities for your child to excel and reach their full potential. This evaluation should encompass teaching methods, educational philosophies, extracurricular activities, and the availability of developmentally appropriate resources. Practical Considerations: Factor in practical matters, such as financial constraints. Ensure that the school's costs are within your budget and won't create undue stress. Additionally, investigate whether the school provides financial aid or scholarships. Talents and Aspirations: If your child possesses unique talents or requires specialized programs or arrangements, such as asynchronous learning, confirm that the school can accommodate these needs.

Private School Search Suggested Timeline Assessing Needs: To pinpoint these needs accurately, evaluate your child's capabilities, learning style, interests, challenges, and what motivates them. Establish your family's goals for your child's education. Prioritizing Needs: It's essential to understand that no single school can meet every need. Prioritize your requirements, classifying them as deal-breakers, must-haves, or non-negotiables. Be prepared to make trade-offs and consider complementing your child's education with after-school programs, volunteer opportunities, summer enrichment programs, or travel experiences. Reflect on Your Motivation: If you're struggling to identify your needs, take a moment to reflect on why you want to send your child to a private school. Your motivations will serve as a compass, guiding you toward the right priorities. The key to a successful school search lies in aligning your family's needs with your child's while recognizing that the ideal school may require some compromises and additional experiences beyond the classroom such as after-school programs, volunteer opportunities, summer enrichment programs, and even travel.

Step 3: Financial Plan – Assess Your Budget Financial considerations are, understandably, at the forefront of the decision-making process. Assessing your budget for private education is a crucial step in making informed decisions about your child's educational journey. It involves a comprehensive review of your financial resources and obligations to determine how much you can comfortably allocate to tuition and related expenses. This process ensures that you maintain financial stability while providing your child with the best educational opportunities. By carefully assessing your budget, you can confidently explore various private school options, consider financial aid and scholarship opportunities, and plan for any additional costs, ultimately making a well-informed choice that aligns with your family's financial goals and values.

Step 4: Delving into School Types Private schools encompass a myriad of types, each marked by its unique attributes. Independent or private schools are usually privately funded either by parents through tuition or supported by a church or parish. Within Independent schools, there are many other types of schools. Traditional/Non-sectarian schools aren't affiliated with any particular religious belief. Religious or Faith-Based schools have religious affiliations, while Parochial schools receive support from a church or parish. Alternative Learning Methods include Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia-inspired schools, offering child-centered and self-guided curriculum approaches. Special Education schools are designed to provide therapeutic education for children with learning difficulties, disabilities and additional needs. Lastly, special emphasis schools serve students whose needs are unique such Continued on page 39

This is a general timeline. It is essential that you work closely with schools and their specific deadlines and requirements.

+ Early Planning (2 - 3 years before enrollment) Identify your needs and compile your shortlist of preferred schools. + Define your academic, extracurricular and social priorities. + Research schools in your desired location using online resources, school directories, and recommendations from friends or family. + Set a budget for tuition and associated costs. + Understand the curriculum and extracurricular activities offered by each school and how they align with your child's interests and goals. + Prepare a list of questions to ask admission officers, teachers, and current parents to gain a deeper understanding of each school. + Following a school on social media can help you stay informed and can provide a glimpse into a school's culture and values. + Summer enrichment programs and camps are a great way to experience a school's campus, facilities, extracurricular activities, philosophy, values and culture.

+ Initial Shortlist (1-2 years before enrollment) Narrow down your list of potential schools to about 3 to 5 schools. + Begin by contacting schools for information and application materials. + Be mindful of admission requirements, upcoming test dates, application deadlines, and interviews. + If needed, explore financial aid and scholarship opportunities offered by the schools. Tip: Most private schoolsrequire standardized testing for applicant assessment. The SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) and the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Examination) are the most frequently used tests. It's wise to register and schedule these tests for October or November, allowing your child flexibility for potential retakes before the January and February deadlines.

+ Tours and Visits (1 - 1.5 years before enrollment) October marks the start of open house season, usually extending through February. These admissions events, along with private campus tours, provide unique insights into school life, allowing prospective families to see inside the heart of a school, feel its pulse, gain a firsthand feel for a school's culture and meet the dedicated educators who will inspire your child. If you cannot attend an open house, take advantage of: + Virtual tours online + Live virtual town halls + Virtual Showcases + Sporting Events, Fine Art Performances or Fundraisers

as gifted, language immersion, or professional training schools. They are typically designed to accommodate students with a nontraditional program, setting, or curriculum. School type alone should not dictate your decision. The key lies in finding a school that resonates with your child's needs, and sometimes this happens beyond the label. The quest for the right school should emphasize what the institution embodies in terms of diversity, culture, enrichment, values, and experiences.

Step 5: Excellence is Obvious - Design Meets Purpose A well-defined mission statement serves as the bedrock of an institution, outlining its purpose and core values. The most exceptional schools integrate their values, policies, structures, and practices seamlessly into their design. Schools should have a wellorganized framework that includes their overall mission, curriculum, teaching methods, and cultural ethos. A mission serves as the school's purpose, defining why it exists, its fundamental principles, and its intended beneficiaries. The curriculum encompasses learning objectives, teaching methods, and tools, dictating what students should learn, either by grade level or through differentiated instruction tailored to each student's achievement level, learning style, interests, and needs. Teaching methods encompass pedagogical principles and management strategies, distinguishing between teacher-centered and student-centered approaches, as well as high-tech and low-tech instructional methods. A school's culture shapes its allocation of time and resources, guides how people at the school treat each other and reinforces core values such as honesty, kindness, collaboration, respect for diverse ideas, and a commitment to community service. A school's culture, as I often emphasize, profoundly shapes students' educational experiences.

Step 6: Comprehensive Assessment The road to discovering excellence requires you to consider many factors. These factors also include student-to-teacher ratios, accreditation, mechanisms for tracking academic progress, safety protocols, student support services, professional development opportunities for teachers, transparent communication, and the degree of parental involvement. Each facet plays a pivotal role in shaping the educational environment. Remember, every child is unique, and so is each school. Start your school search early, research with precision, and align your choices with your child's distinct needs. Embarking on this fulfilling journey of school search with confidence and purpose will bring you closer to providing your child with the gift of an exceptional education. Remember that the privilege of school choice is not just a decision but an investment in your child's future, a choice that will shape their growth, character, and opportunities. So, embrace this process with enthusiasm and dedication, knowing that your commitment today will pave the way for a tomorrow filled with promise and success for your child. 

+ Entrance Testing and Application Period (1 year before enrollment)

Identify deadlines and submit application + Register for and take any required standardized test. + Submit all required documents such as transcripts, teacher recommendations and essays. + If needed, apply for financial aid and merit scholarship + Complete and submit applications to schools by their specific deadlings. + Prepare for interviews if required. + Continue visiting and attending admissions events for schools on your shortlist. Tip: Ask in advance and hand out the Recommendation Request Forms in early November. Some teachers will write extraordinary letters and others may write shorter generic letters, they may even have a template. These forms are meant to be confidential so while you shouldn't ask to see them you may ask how a teacher usually formats their letters or what kind of information they like to include. Always say thank you!

+ Admissions Deadline and Notifications (6-8 months before enrollment) This is usually the busiest time of year for private schools. Make sure you review all your forms and application for completeness and do not leave anything for the last minute. + Private schools with fixed application dates tend to have deadlines in either mid-January to early-February. + Double-check that everything is complete and submit your application at least three days before the deadline to avoid any issues. + If a school has set deadlines, typically students will be accepted, deferred (need more information), waitlisted, or denied admission by March. For schools with rolling admission, applications are reviewed as they are received.

+ Final Decision (3-4 months before enrollment) Schools often allow families a month to consider their options and enroll or decline offers of admission. + Review acceptance offers and make your final decision based on financial considerations, and your assessment of the schools. + Notify your chosen school of your acceptance and complete all enrollment paperwork and requirements, including health records. + As soon as you decide to enroll at one school, the courteous thing to do is notify others of your decision not to attend. If your child is transitioning from another school, communicate with their current school to facilitate a smooth transition. + Attend any orientation sessions or events offered by the chosen school.

A great school will consistently deliver what your child and family need; therefore, revisiting those needs and what schools offer to fill those needs are the two major considerations for a final choice with confidence.

n an ever-evolving job landscape, classroom proficiency and academic excellence alone no longer guarantees a seamless transition from school to the workplace. As employers seek well-rounded individuals who can adapt, collaborate, and communicate effectively, the spotlight has shifted towards cultivating essential soft skills among students. These intangible qualities, ranging from communication and teamwork to adaptability and problem-solving, hold the key to not only surviving but thriving in the modern professional world. In this article, we delve into the significance of these vital skills and explore actionable strategies for educators and students alike to ensure a successful journey from the classroom to the boardroom. Did you know that 85 percent of career success comes from highly developed soft skills? According to research from Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation, and Stanford University, only 15 percent of career success is attributed to hard skills or technical skills learned through education. With this in mind, teaching our students soft skills is critical in setting them up for success as future professionals. Although academic excellence is crucial, incorporating soft skill development through extracurricular activities and practice at home can significantly benefit your student.

42

| PRI VATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2023

What are soft skills? Soft skills, often referred to as interpersonal or non-technical skills, encompass personal attributes, behaviors, and qualities that empower individuals to engage effectively and amicably with others in diverse settings, whether personal or professional. They differ from technical or hard skills, which pertain to job-specific or technical competencies. Examples of common soft skills include: Time Management. Efficiently managing your time distinguishes you as a considerate individual who meets project deadlines, minimizes distractions at work, and prioritizes important tasks. Adaptability. Flexibility is a crucial trait in the workplace, allowing you to navigate changes in projects with composure rather than becoming flustered by unexpected adjustments. Networking. It’s time to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. The ability to engage with strangers is essential for building relationships, both personally and professionally. Continued on page 44

Why soft skills matter Soft skills are highly valued in the workplace and play a crucial role in career success and personal development. They are often considered equally important, if not more so, than technical skills because they contribute to effective communication, collaboration, and overall professionalism.

How can we teach soft skills? Two forms of teaching soft skills are through participation in extracurriculars and through practice at home. •

Join extracurricular activities.

Individual sports, like golf, rely heavily on adaptability. If you make mistakes in the first holes, you will need to adapt the remaining holes to offset the errors.

Enthusiasm. The ability to approach tasks and interactions with eagerness, energy, and a positive attitude. A positive attitude not only motivates you but also positively influences others, creating a more productive work environment. Professionalism. The practice of conducting oneself with integrity, respect, and adherence to workplace norms and standards. Demonstrating professionalism involves dressing appropriately, being punctual, focused work hours, respectful communication (both verbal and written), and avoiding gossip. Communication skills. : Effective communication encompasses choosing the right words and timing for conversations, such as discussing a promotion. Additionally, being a skilled listener is often underestimated but crucial. To improve your listening skills, follow the RASA acronym: Receive, Appreciate, Summarize, and Ask, as suggested by TED Talk speaker Julian Treasure. Teamwork. Being a cooperative team member who strives for excellence in every project means learning to collaborate effectively with people of all personalities, even those who may be challenging to work with. Leadership. Alongside being a team player, the ability to influence your peers is equally important in fostering a productive work environment. Problem Solving. Adding value to your role involves not just identifying issues in ongoing projects but also proactively proposing solutions. Instead of dwelling on problems, one must learn to present potential ideas for resolving them.

Group sports can help sharpen teamwork skills.

Debate clubs can help with listening skills to counter your opponent’s stance. Writing clubs can help garner communication skills. Taking on a leadership role in sports or clubs can help strengthen leadership skills. Practice communication skills in your daily life.

Call to make your next doctor’s appointment as a way to practice communication skills and professionalism, by greeting the receptionist nicely and defining a time/date for the appointment. When telling your friends a story, find ways to make it concise. When doing chores or unpleasant household tasks, practice an enthusiastic attitude. Search for ways to make it more genuinely pleasant, like listening to music while you wash dishes.

Whenever someone walks through the door, use that as a trigger to give them your full attention and put away your cell phone. This is a way to practice consideration and respectfulness.

Pause and review any texts or emails before you hit send. This will help avoid errors and build up critical thinking skills.

Teaching our students soft skills is fundamental, not only for future professional success but also for relationships in general. The good news is that these skills can be learned and sharpened with practice. Although academic excellence is significant, developing soft skills through extracurricular activities and practice at home will give your student an edge in the competitive workplace. 

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PRIVATE SCHOOL PROFILES

Alexander Montessori School v Dr. Maria Montessori wrote, “Within the child is the person he will become.” The Mission of Alexander Montessori School is to cultivate children’s natural curiosity, independence, and love of learning as they discover the interdependent nature of life, explore their unique purpose, and peacefully transform the world. Our task is to aid children in their work of self-creation, to help them become independent learners and thinkers who have a foundation for a lifelong love of learning and intellectual curiosity. As we grow in our independence, we are working toward fulfilling our School Motto: Help me to help myself in order that I may help others. Alexander Montessori offers full-day and half-day educational programs uniquely designed to foster a love of learning for children ages 18 months to 12 years old. The child-centered Montessori philosophy provides a learning environment for Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Elementary students unlike other Miami private schools and traditional public education. At Alexander Montessori, classrooms and curricula are tailored to a child’s learning and growth. Rather than imparting knowledge, the primary purpose of the Montessori Method is developing children intellectually and socially to be independent thinkers and self-directed leaders. Teachers follow the child’s lead, allowing learning to take its own path and pace, which often outpaces traditional education.
