BUILDING FUTURE LEADERS

Rooted in Excellence

The Growing Place School is Planting Seeds of Curiosity and Creativity where Minds and Hearts Flourish.

Imagine education where the wonder of childhood and magic of creativity meet the academic rigor with standards of excellence. Picture a classroom in which learning is a hands-on experience, where children's theories are amplified in meaningful conversations based on their unique topics of interest. Where their ideas are elevated with each colorful display of their efforts. Envision a school that embraces whole child development across intellectual, linguistic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth. For over 60 years, The Growing Place School has been a hidden gem in Coral Gables, making such a dream a reality for children ages one through 5th grade.

TGPS is a community school in which partnerships with parents create a home away from home. In this safe, innovative environment, children thrive as the best versions of themselves as they broaden spiritually through experiences, ideas, feelings, and understandings connected to faith. As a ministry of the First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables, we welcome families from all faiths and backgrounds. We place our greatest intentions for a child's well-rounded development and success as a happy citizen.

At the program's core is project-based learning (PBL), an invitation for children to discover learning in a deeply impactful way. Learners are encouraged to explore their interests as educators enhance them through a nationally aligned curriculum with active experiences enriched with stimulating materials, stunning literature, and real-world connections. Students dive into projects as they collaborate through hands-on learning opportunities that nurture their curiosity and creativity Children gain self-confidence, perseverance, and teamwork strategies as they engage in PBL and develop these long-term skills for success.

At TGPS, children are compassionate changemakers who actively contribute to making the world a better place. They are eco-enthusiasts who participate and thrive yearly in environmental challenges such as Dream in Green™ and The Fairchild Challenge™ to develop sustainable practices as stewards of the environment . Learners are confident innovators who not only reduce, reuse, and recycle but also upcycle to invent new solutions to help our planet.

The Growing Place School is a wellestablished Christian early childhood center and elementary school currently educating children ages one years old through 5th grade.

STREAM education is at the pulse of our program. Science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, and mathematics are woven throughout our curriculum. This approach provides students with the opportunity to engage in real-world applications. Children demonstrate mastery in innovative presentations by incorporating critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.

TGPS prepares children to enter diverse community middle school programs and cultivates a community of spiritual, compassionate, creative, and thriving world citizens.

We build knowledge by making connections with other people, our environment, and experiences. The building blocks of constructivist learning take place in social settings. Through PBL, children work together to master meaningful, grade-level content and deepen their love of learning.

Our educators are lifelong learners who eagerly immerse in year-round professional development workshops to stay at the forefront of research, intentional best practices, and collaborative understanding of child development. Through Conscious Discipline practices, educators instill socio-emotional awareness in students. Ultimately, our learners hone these abilities to become emblems of interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.

TGPS is a school where learning drives the data, not testing. Our results are more than just a test score; our learners are more valuable than just a number. 

Inquiry-based Learning

Transforming Education Through Reflection and Real-World Problem Solving.

Curiosity in the Classroom

Inquiry-Based Learning transforms the classroom into a space where curiosity thrives, questions lead the way, and students take charge of their learning. As Eugène Ionesco said, "It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question." This spirit of inquiry empowers students to not only find answers but to embrace the journey of exploration, preparing them for the complexities of the world beyond the classroom.

Finding the right learning method is crucial for optimizing a student’s educational experience and fostering their overall development. Traditionally, education has followed a lecture-based format where teachers present information and students listen, take notes, and ask questions. This approach focuses on memorization and passive learning. However, as education evolves, newer methods like Project-Based Learning and Problem-Based Learning have emerged, offering students the opportunity to engage actively with hands-on tasks and realworld challenges. Since each student thrives with different methods, understanding these differences is crucial.

Project-Based Learning is centered on the principle of “learning by doing.” Rooted in the educational philosophies of John Dewey, an influential American philosopher and educational reformer, this approach was first introduced in the early 20th century. He emphasized the importance of fostering critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, preparing students for life beyond the classroom. By the 1970s, it had evolved into a structured teaching method.

In Project-Based Learning, students tackle realworld challenges over extended periods—typically several weeks or even months. These projects involve research, teamwork, and the creation of a tangible product, such as a presentation, physical model, or report. The goal is not to find a quick answer but to instead thoroughly explore a topic and gain a deeper understanding of the material.

For instance, rather than learning about budgeting through traditional lectures and worksheets, with Project-Based Learning, students might be tasked with creating a community garden with a $500 budget. Over several weeks, they would plan expenses, research local nurseries for plants and materials, compare costs for soil, tools, and seeds, and calculate how to maximize their resources to create a thriving garden. Once the planning phase is complete, the students would execute the project, applying their knowledge in a realworld setting. This experience not only deepens their understanding of budgeting, environmental science, and sustainability but also equips students with critical thinking, teamwork, and project management skills.

The beauty of Project-Based Learning lies in its realworld applications. Instead of remaining purely theoretical, students experience how their solutions could work in practice, which allows them to see the immediate impact of their decisions with the success of the community garden. This hands-on approach boosts engagement and fosters a sense of ownership and accountability. However, the open-ended nature of these projects can sometimes overwhelm students, particularly those who struggle with time management or long-term planning. Without proper guidance, projects can drift off course.

In contrast, Problem-Based Learning centers on solving specific, open-ended problems in a more immediate time frame. Initially developed in the 1960s to help medical students think critically and solve real-world medical cases, the method soon spread into other disciplines as educators recognized its effectiveness in fostering independent learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

In Problem-Based Learning, students are presented with a real-world problem that lacks a clear solution. Working in teams, they research, discuss, and collaborate to explore potential solutions. Unlike ProjectBased Learning, which unfolds over weeks or months,

Problem-Based Learning focuses on shorter, intensive exploration and pushes students to come up with practical solutions quickly.

Let’s revisit our budgeting class example. With ProblemBased Learning, students might be presented with a scenario where their school wants to create a community garden but only has half of the original $500 budget. They would need to brainstorm solutions to reduce costs without sacrificing the garden’s quality—perhaps by researching low-cost or donated materials, reusing existing resources, or seeking community partnerships. Throughout, the teacher would facilitate the process by encouraging the application of math concepts like percentages, cost analysis, and resource allocation. As students work through the problem, they refine their understanding of budgeting, resource management, and critical thinking. In the end, each group would present their strategy for developing the garden on a limited budget, with multiple solutions emerging, encouraging flexibility and creative problem-solving.

The main advantage of Problem-Based Learning is that it helps students develop quick problem-solving skills and teaches them how to think critically in real-world situations. However, some students may struggle with its fast-paced, less structured nature.

While both Project-Based Learning and Problem-Based Learning aim to actively engage students, they differ in their scope and focus. Project-Based Learning is typically longer-term and project-focused, culminating in a final product, whereas Problem-Based Learning emphasizes shorter, more immediate problem-solving challenges. Beyond these two approaches, there are other innovative “X-based” learning methods that are also worth exploring. Inquiry-Based Learning encourages students to initiate their learning journey by posing questions and delving into topics through investigation and research. Rather than being assigned a problem or project, students drive their own learning by seeking answers to questions they are curious about.

Game-Based Learning, another popular method, incorporates gaming elements such as rewards and challenges into the learning process. By making lessons interactive and fun, Game-Based Learning is particularly motivating for students who thrive on competition, enjoy interactive experiences, or struggle with traditional, lecture-based methods. It’s also well-suited for those who are technologically inclined or prefer learning through hands-on, trial-and-error activities.

Competency-Based Learning takes a different approach, allowing students to progress at their own pace. Rather than following a fixed schedule, students advance when

they demonstrate a thorough understanding of each topic. This method benefits students who need more time to fully grasp concepts as well as those who excel quickly and wish to advance sooner. By catering to the needs of both struggling and advanced learners, Competency-Based Learning provides a tailored learning experience that accommodates individual needs.

Each learning method has its own benefits and challenges, and understanding them can help parents choose the best educational approach for their child’s learning style. Some students will flourish in the structured, long-term environment of Project-Based Learning, while others may prefer the dynamic quick pace of Problem-Based Learning.

As parents navigate the choices available in private education, it’s important to consider how these methods can shape their child’s learning experience. By fostering skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and realworld problem-solving, these innovative approaches prepare students not just for academic success, but for life beyond the classroom. Whether through long-term projects or immediate problem-solving, the goal remains the same: to actively engage students, inspiring innovative individuals equipped to face future challenges with creativity, critical thinking, and resilience. 

A Path to Growth and Leadership

THE VALUE OF IN-HOUSE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Asa rule, the only thing I look forward to about Professional Development Days is an early finish, bottomless coffee and the possibility that the “expensive” pastries might make an appearance.

I am sure this is not just me. I think to myself, I have so much work to get through and someone, who has no idea about my school or my students, is telling me what I should do in my school with my students. Sound familiar?

What if we reimagined Professional Development (PD)? What if, instead of looking outward for growth, we turned inward, tapping into the wealth of talent and experience already present in our schools?

There are numerous benefits to in-house PD that can transform it from a checkbox on the calendar to a meaningful and engaging process. The key is relevance. When PD is designed and delivered by those within the school, it speaks directly to the needs, challenges, and goals of the community. Teachers are more likely to relate to the content and see its immediate applicability in their classrooms.

Rather than bringing in external speakers who may not fully grasp the nuances of the school's mission or student body, teachers can work together to share best practices, troubleshoot issues, and celebrate successes. This kind of peer-driven learning creates a supportive professional network within the school and builds community.

In-house professional development also provides unique opportunities for leadership. Teachers who have expertise in certain areas can take on the role of facilitator, guiding their colleagues through new teaching strategies, tools, or approaches. For schools, this is a way to recognize and nurture talent.

Offering teachers leadership roles in PD gives them a chance to step up, gain visibility, and hone their skills in areas like communication and mentorship. These experiences can be stepping stones to future administrative roles or leadership positions within the school.

In-house professional development is also an essential component of creating a cohesive school system. Teachers in the same institution often share the same goals and vision, and when they grow together, the school's mission is more likely to be realized. Whether it’s adopting a new curriculum or improving student engagement strategies, the alignment that comes from internal PD ensures that all educators are working towards the same objectives, creating a more unified approach to teaching and learning.

Moreover, in-house PD promotes consistency across the school. When all teachers receive the same training and share the same goals, it helps create a more cohesive educational environment. Students benefit from this consistency as they experience similar teaching methods and expectations across grade levels and subject areas.

While traditional, externally sourced professional development can feel disconnected and uninspiring, in-house professional development holds the potential to be dynamic, relevant, and empowering. It provides growth opportunities for teachers, fosters leadership within the school, and ensures that everyone is aligned with the institution's values and goals.

To enhance the professional growth of our educators and improve the educational experience for our students, we should keep the pastries and invest in our own talent to create a collaborative culture. 

Marco Cirillo is the Head of Middle School at St. Mark's Episcopal School in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Extracurriculars

Real-World Preparation

Real-World Ready

Choosing extracurriculars should align with your child’s interests while also preparing them for life beyond school. For instance, speech and debate teaches students to build and defend arguments, conduct research, and communicate effectively. It builds critical thinking, encourages civil discourse, and fosters collaboration—skills essential for future success. Another activity with a lasting impact is student government. While it might not lead to a political career, it provides insight into democratic processes and teaches the value of working together for the common good.

Joy in Learning

Often overlooked, extracurricular activities also offer an enjoyable and enriching experience. They give kids a chance to explore their passions without the pressure of tests or grades. Activities such as playing, singing, and dancing trigger chemicals in the brain that reduce stress, boost creativity, and improve memory. Enjoyment isn’t just pleasurable—it’s essential for mental health and development. These benefits are best nurtured through extracurricular activities.

Learning from Failure

Failure is an essential part of success. In sports, athletes learn to face setbacks and push forward toward their goals. Competitive activities build resilience and mental toughness, teaching kids how to quickly adapt after failure. This ability to bounce back is crucial and one of the most valuable lessons extracurriculars provide. Learning how to fail with grace and grow from it is a life skill that many people only realize later in life—if they ever do.

Understanding the benefits of extracurricular activities can help students choose ones that support both their academic growth and personal development. By getting involved in activities they enjoy, students build important skills like teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. These experiences do more than just improve college applications—they help students grow into well-rounded individuals who are ready for life beyond school. The lessons learned through extracurriculars, like how to work with others and bounce back from failure, will continue to help them succeed in college, their careers, and everyday life. 

To cultivate children’s natural curiosity, independence, and love of learning as they discover the interdependent nature of life, explore their unique purpose, and peacefully transform the world.

Our Educational Philosophy

We are committed to Maria Montessori’s philosophical concept of “The Cosmic Goal of Education.” For us, this means that academic success and its products have their highest meaning when they contribute to the progress of humanity. Our motto comes from Montessori’s observations of the young child’s often spoken request that emphasizes the essential foundation of independence: “Help me to help myself.” Our motto explains that we strive to impart to the children the highest motive for education: “Help me to help myself that I may help others.” These goals of a love for learning and love for others are summarized in our school-wide motto: “To learn to love to learn.”

La Scuola v La Scuola is a progressive nature school that welcomes children from preschool to 8th grade. Tucked within 3 acres of lush and sprawling forest, our campus is surrounded by mature trees, an abundance of wildlife, and beautiful edible landscapes. The nature that surrounds our school is at the heart of our philosophy. At La Scuola, it is our belief that the exploration of the natural world is the richest source of learning. La Scuola blends the principles of different educational approaches with our love of nature to create a profound and beautiful learning journey for our students. Through rich and meaningful experiences in nature, the development of ideas and theories with facilitators and peers, and the expression of these ideas through the hundred languages of children, our students develop a lifelong love of learning, an appreciation for the environment, and a profound sense of environmental stewardship along the way.

| ACHIEVE. SERVE. LEAD.

The Importance of Parent-Teacher Collaboration

Relationships matter. I have heard this saying time and time again in my personal life and in my professional career as a school leader. It’s true - relationships do matter, and as educators, we understand that building positive relationships with students improves student learning outcomes and contributes to their overall wellbeing and success. At the core of St. Mark’s educational program, we also understand that these relationships are foundational to effective teaching and learning, and we strive daily to build strong partnerships with our parent community, as well. This collaboration, which is at the heart of our mission as an Episcopal school, not only enhances student achievement but also builds a cohesive school family where everyone plays an integral role in the children’s educational journey and where students feel supported both at home and school.

When I reflect on the importance of parentteacher collaboration and how it relates to our role as educators, I often think of my own journey as a school parent many years ago.

Having experienced first-hand the trust and connection with so many great teachers along the way, it is easy to see how those relationships ultimately benefited my own children’s learning and growth. I also recognize the times when the parent-teacher collaboration piece was lacking and how that impacted the overall classroom and school culture. That is why cultivating a relationship-focused school where parents and teachers collaborate in the best interests of the children in every classroom and with every teacher, staff, and administrator is not only important but crucial.

Involving parents in the educational process empowers them to take an active role in their child's education. It is important for parents to know and understand so they can contribute to a consistent learning experience in the home. In addition to our regular Back-to-School Night held at the beginning of the new school year, where parents visit their child’s classroom and learn more about academic programming and day-to-day schedules, we also invite parents to participate in ongoing parent-education chats.

This parent-teacher collaboration provides parents with the tools and knowledge they need to support their children's learning throughout the school year. Earlier this month, we held two parent meetings focused on key topics to ensure their child’s success during two significant transitions, the transition into kindergarten and third grade. Both significant milestones in a child’s education journey, kindergarten marks the beginning of formal schooling and sets the foundation for future learning experiences, and third grade marks the shift from early elementary to upper elementary, where students start to build upon the foundational skills they have acquired in previous years. Taking the time to meet with parents to share how we work to support

emotional development of students. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, anxiety and other mental health issues have increased over the past ten years greatly impacting children’s ability to function in school - in fact, approximately one out of three students in elementary school experience some form of mental health concerns.

PK2 - 8th Grade

Our school counseling program’s main goal during these formative years has been to maintain open communication with parents and encourage parent-teacher collaboration to identify any issues early on, such as anxiety, behavioral issues, and learning difficulties.

By working together, parents and teachers can create strategies to address these challenges and seek outside resources when needed, ensuring that the child’s emotional needs are met along with their academic expectations. We recently held a parent-teacher chat to keep parents informed and connected regarding the key developmental milestones and challenges for elementary-aged children. This meeting enhanced parents’ understanding of social-emotional learning and provided them with practical strategies they can implement at home. Later, one parent shared how supported

and comfortable she felt as a parent knowing that she could reach out to us about her daughter’s emotional well-being. This is a true testament to the strength of building positive relationships and the importance of investing in parent-teacher collaboration. It was a powerful moment and affirmed the good work we are doing together as parents, teachers, staff, and administrators.

Parent-teacher collaboration is essential. It enhances student achievement, builds strong partnerships, encourages consistency in learning, empowers parents, and supports social and emotional development. Yes, relationships matter, and great educators know the importance of parent-teacher collaboration and its positive impact on the students and families we serve. Let’s get to work! 
