I am excited to bring you the latest edition of our magazine. We hope that this issue will be a valuable resource as you make some of the most important decisions for your child's future.
We would like to first extend our heartfelt congratulations to Conchita Espinosa Academy as they celebrate 90 years of providing a worldclass education to countless generations of students. The co-educational independent private school has earned an outstanding reputation in South Florida as a strong community of learners. Since 1933, CEA has fostered a strong academic foundation strengthened by the arts and humanities which continue to be at the core of the curriculum. This is an incredible milestone and a testament to the strength and dedication of your school community. May you continue to inspire and empower students with a transformational, forward-thinking educational experience for many more years to come!
In addition to our comprehensive directory, we wanted to share ways to address college admissions decisions and remind students and parents that there are many paths to success. We know this time of year can be overwhelming for high school seniors who have just received letters from universities, so we reached out to Way Finder Educational Consulting and spoke with Dr. Tania about ways to support and navigate this emotional stage of your child's education journey, from choosing the right university to managing expectations and responses. If your student or family could use some advice on college applications, school selection, or academic planning, an educational consultant can provide a world of benefits and support. In addition to their extensive knowledge and experience in education, these professionals offer insight and guidance that will help you make informed and confident decisions.
In my role as editor, I am proud of the effort and dedication that went into this issue, and I hope you find it informative and useful. We appreciate your feedback on this issue and would love to hear what you think. It is our pleasure to continue supporting you and your family on your educational journey, and may it be filled with success.

Accepted! The obvious highlight of the college admissions process is receiving those college acceptance letters. Witnessing the joy that college acceptance notifications bring is always a memorable experience. At this point in the college admissions cycle, high school seniors are hopefully experiencing this joy. Let's talk about the next steps after receiving the college acceptance offer. Accepted students should:
1. Wait to receive notifications before making a decision
2. Reconsider college decision factors including cost, location, college preference, etc. for each acceptance received
3. Compare acceptance offers
Rejected. There is no sugarcoating the feeling of being rejected. Although receiving a rejection decision sucks, it is a real part of the process and life itself. At highly selective institutions, rejections are the norm. Highly competitive schools are often perceived with academic rigor and quality. In fact, college application rejections are a reality for almost one out of three students. However, receiving a rejection letter does not indicate the end of college prospects. Students should not take a rejection notice personally but rather focus on the acceptance decisions they have received or hope to receive. Having a solid admissions strategy improves your chances for your college application being accepted.
Prospective college students who receive rejection letters should:
1. Understand that most students receive a rejection notification
2. Evaluate and reassess the college list
3. Focus on the acceptance offers
4. Consider appealing the decision if there is new and compelling information to disclose
Deferred. Two common reasons that students are deferred are (1) The school may need more time to review applications or (2) The admission committee believes that an application needs a boost, which means they want to give prospective students a chance to do so. Deferred students should:
1. Complete the college's deferral instructions
2. Submit updated test scores recommendation letters, transcripts, and a letter of continued interest.
3. Evaluate and update the college list
4. Stay positive, a deferral is a second chance for admission.
Waitlisted. College waitlists include qualified students who might be admitted if space in the freshmen class becomes available. The chances of being selected from the waitlist will vary by institution, however, NACAC (National Association of College Admission Counseling) reports that 20% of all waitlisted students were ultimately admitted. Waitlisted students should consider the following:
1. Evaluate the backup plan
2. Decide if they want to remain on the waitlist and find out where they rank on the waitlist, if possible and consider financial aid deadlines
3. Continue to demonstrate interest and communication
4. Confirm enrollment at another university as part of the backup plan

Conchita Espinosa Academy (CEA) is entering its 90th anniversary year. Throughout these years, CEA has been a pillar in providing a complete and well-rounded education to its students. Beyond its curriculum that establishes a solid academic foundation, CEA helps students develop well-rooted values and ethics, and has been a leader in arts education since its inception. Since 1933 in Cuba, and for the past 60 years in Miami, Conchita Espinosa Academy and Conchita Espinosa Conservatory of the Arts have been a home to established musicians, scientists, dancers, historians, artists, philosophers, actors, mathematicians, poets, athletes, and makers of all kinds—who have a passion for educating and nurturing the realms of critical thinking and creativity in our youth. The dynamic and collaborative work among educators, artists, and students within an environment of creativity and care makes CEA more than a school. CEA is a community that helps students discover a wider world and realize their potential to be multi-faceted individuals with the confidence, discipline, and work ethic to grow, and the humanity to live in a peaceful community. CEA’s unique educational experience begins with a dynamic, age-appropriate,
Visit
and caring environment, and leads to productive, fulfilled, and responsible young adults ready to contribute to a better world.
Family is at the center of CEA’s institutional history, legacy, and culture. Currently in its third generation of a consistent family leadership, Carol Diaz-Zubieta and Ana Diaz-Zubieta, Ph.D. continue their grandmother’s legacy, their great-aunt’s and mother’s lifelong work, and remain faithful to Espinosa’s philosophy that for children to thrive, they must be seen, respected, and loved. Open communication coupled with the support and involvement of families has helped foster the school’s mission and ensures that students feel at ease and have the continuity they need during the formative first fourteen years of life.
The 90th anniversary celebrations began this February, on Conchita’s birthday, with the 2023 Family Affair, which brought together alumni, faculty, students, and families, followed by the Conchita Legacy Concert, which showcased the Conservatory’s music faculty and select student musicians. The celebrations will continue into the 2023-2024 school year.
"We believe in the power of the spirit, the wealth of the mind, the sacredness of childhood, and the strength of following one’s dreams.”"
is a necessary part of life, but it may become dull because people tend to be results-driven by nature. Children start with an intense curiosity to learn things, but by the time they graduate, learning becomes less practical and more abstract (which the brain needs to grasp quickly) and which can make it monotonous and soporific. Carl Sagan described it perfectly when discussing how most young children are natural-born scientists. "My experience is, you go talk to kindergarten kids or first-grade kids, you find a class full of science enthusiasts. And they ask deep questions. What is a dream, why do we have toes, why is the moon round, what is the birthday of the world, why is grass green? These are profound, important questions," he explains. "They've never heard of the notion of a 'dumb question'. But when I talk to high school seniors, I find something different. They memorize 'facts.' By and large, though, the joy of discovery, the life behind those facts, has gone out of them. They've lost much of the wonder and gained
very little skepticism. They're worried about asking 'dumb' questions; they're willing to accept inadequate answers; they don't pose follow-up questions; the room is awash with sidelong glances to judge, second by second, the approval of their peers."
To bring back the love of learning and the impassioned curiosity that follows, educators are turning to an active learning technique that can drive change in the learning experience--play! After all, play ensures that young mammals, including humans, learn the skills needed to survive and thrive in the world. While playing and gaming are very different (one is open-ended while the other has confinements such as rules and tactics), great games compel us to play! Throughout history and cultures, games have played an essential role in human society, tracing social change through the games that people play and often reflecting the culture in which they exist.
In recent years, as Education and Technology have become fast friends and through gamification, their relationship extends beyond necessity and accessibility to fun and immersive. The gaming industry has a tremendous ability to engage audiences. According to the latest data from leading industry researchers, there are approximately 3.09 billion active video gamers worldwide (for reference, the world's current population is 8.05 billion people). While motion pictures and film dominated culture in the 20th Century, information has taken a playful turn in the last few decades. Eric Zimmerman, American game designer and the co-founder and CEO of Gamelab, believes that video games will be the dominant medium of the 21st Century. In his Manifesto for a Ludic Century, Zimmerman argues, "When information is put at play, game-like experiences replace linear media. Media and culture in the Ludic Century are increasingly systemic, modular, customizable, and participatory. Games embody all of these characteristics in a very direct sense. Being playful is the engine of innovation and creativity: as we play, we think about thinking and we learn to act in new ways. As a cultural form, games have a particularly direct connection with play...The problems the world faces today require the kinds of thinking that gaming literacy engenders. How does the price of gas in California affect the politics of the Middle East affect the Amazon ecosystem? These problems force us to understand how the parts of a system fit together to create a complex whole with emergent effects. They require playful, innovative, trans-disciplinary thinking in which systems can be analyzed, redesigned, and transformed into something new... Game design involves systems logic, social psychology, and culture hacking. To play a game deeply is to think more and more like a game designer – to tinker, retro-engineer, and modify a game in order to find new ways to play. As more people play more deeply in the Ludic Century, the lines will become increasingly blurred between game players and game designers...This above
all: games are not valuable because they can teach someone a skill or make the world a better place. Like other forms of cultural expression, games and play are important because they are beautiful." The book "The Gameful World: Approaches, Issues, Applications" contains the complete manifesto.
Simply put, gamification is the process of applying game-like elements and mechanics to non-gaming tasks and activities to create a high situational interest that encourages participation. Many educators are turning to gamification because it makes learning engaging, motivating, and interactive for students. Games produced specifically for enhancing cognitive development have been dubbed "brain games" and have become increasingly popular as they can improve the rate at which the brain processes and maintains the information. To understand this increasingly popular teaching/learning method, one needs to start with gamification principles and how they can create a more immersive learning experience.
Gamification has been implemented in many fields (marketing, advertising, health and wellness, enterprises, and education) to motivate participation and increase engagement (think customer rewards programs). The idea of gamification in the classroom is to make lessons more fun and appealing to learners while motivating them to create and understand meaning from systems, play, and design. Experts have long acknowledged that play is critical to cognitive development and learning. Gamification uses the principles of game design (clear goals, rules, feedback, rewards, and collaboration or competition), game design elements such as incentive structures (points, ranks, stars, and reward cycles), and game mechanics (racing, collecting, roll and move, timed-challenges, resource management) that students enjoy and find interesting.
continued on page 14
Gamification tends to conjure images of digital and video gaming experiences. While it can involve playing a video game, the essence of gamification is using elements from board, card, and video games to enhance non-game activities. Gamification is ultimately about understanding what motivates learners and using it to create better experiences.
Take, for example, Dmitri Mendeleev, the Russian chemist who is one of the first to apply gamification to accomplish an educational task. Mendeleev was an avid card player who used elements from card games to devise the periodic classification of chemical elements. He looked for order in these chemical elements by arranging a stack of cards listing each known element and physical information about that element. He then lined up each card in order of increasing atomic mass (weight). By playing his game of cards, Mendeleev discovered patterns and even predicted the future discoveries of other elements (and their accurate properties) that led to publishing of The Periodic Table of Elements. Although he was denied acceptance at Moscow University, Mendeleev formulated the periodic law and earned the nickname "Father of the Periodic Table." A significant argument for gamification and how students can benefit from game-based learning regardless of their prior academic achievements.
Game-based learning is becoming increasingly popular in classrooms, and it is easy to see why. Integrating gaming principles into educational practices transforms how students grasp and retain knowledge. The benefits of gamification are substantial in education and rich in experience.
Gamification is an effective tool that improves accessibility for students of all ages and learning abilities. Game designers create features with all students in mind, allowing teachers to customize the material to suit each student's learning style. By adapting automatically to each learner's specific knowledge, cognitive skills, and emotions, games facilitate engagement among all learners. Therefore, a game's adaptive design must first measure
the variable the game is supposed to adapt for, such as knowledge, ability, capacity, or other variables. The concept is also known as the curb-cut effect, which posits that designing for disabilities leads to improvements for everyone in the process. The term comes from sidewalk ramps (curb cuts) constructed initially to make communities more accessible to wheelchair users. This curb-cut design became universal as it provided everyone with improved safety and ease of movement, including those pushing strollers or carts, riding bicycles, and even running/walking.
Another example of this is closed-captioning and voice-to-text technology. The level of immersion in game-based learning platforms is particularly beneficial for neurodivergent children, who become more engaged in their lessons thanks to highly sensory experiences. Gamification provides a safe and fun learning environment where students can feel more comfortable exploring, asking questions, and making mistakes leading to greater creativity and innovation. This adaptive and universal design concept aids in creating an inclusive educational experience and increased accessibility in the classroom.
Competition has been a part of the human psyche since the dawn of civilization. The idea of winning, receiving rewards, or receiving recognition has been a motivating factor from the earliest days of human history in contests of physical strength, endurance, and intellect. Creating a learning environment of reward for the effort through competition triggers emotions that create positive user experiences. When students enjoy their learning experiences, their brain releases dopamine, increasing motivation to continue doing what gives them pleasure. The spirit of competition is a powerful motivator that encourages a student's desire for success, helps to sustain their efforts, and drives them to stay persistent and committed to their goal.
Collaboration has become one of the loudest buzzwords in education over the past years. From collaborative classrooms to collaborative tools and technology, research supports that connection and relationships significantly impact learning outcomes.

There is also a deeper level of connection and collaboration achieved through gamification, especially in blended classrooms where students do not have to be physically present simultaneously to interact with each other. Games provide social spaces that allow people to connect through socio-emotional messages such as "Thanks for the help" or task-oriented messages like sharing tips or strategies. Having a community within an initiative has a powerful effect on how students collaborate. Certain game-based learning activities incorporate social components that require collaboration and teamwork, ensuring students share in a common experience and learn through teaching as they rely on each other as valuable resources. Gamification fosters this critical life skill that can help them build relationships and work better together in the future.
The design of almost all games consists of three key elements: a challenge, a response, and feedback. These notifications of accomplishments and achievements create new challenges, which then require new responses, followed by more measures of progress based on these responses. Educational psychologists call the cycle the Magic Circle of playful learning, describing it as engagement optimized to facilitate learning. It is the core learning mechanism in game-based learning. This sense of progress - propelled by feedback - is the force that motivates learners to keep pushing forward. It can be the difference between a task being a chore or an experience. Embedded in this Magic Circle of playful learning is a form of assessment or evaluation of a student's ability and level of proficiency for each skill. It is undeniable that two of the most crucial components in education are technology and assessments. The integration of these two components allows teachers to aid in the learning progress by having a source of data that helps evaluate students' competencies and skills. Some benefits of having game-based assessments are engagement through reward and recognition, reduced bias, measurable progress, and highly personalized learning and development plans. This immediate type of feedback allows teachers to asses students' who are new to a skill and those who have mastered it while they are still engaged in the learning process.
Gaming will never replace teachers, or at least it never should. Integrating it alongside classroom-based instruction, scaffolding it with guidance, and providing real teacher support can optimize the use of this incredible tool.
Here are some other benefits when the gamification of learning is done right:
1. It makes learning visible, interactive, and immersive
2. Makes Learning entertaining and fun
3. Improves knowledge retention
4. Improves Engagement
5. Aids in cognitive, and in some cases physical, development
6. Allows for learning through mistakes by providing a chance to reflect and improve on failures
7. Promotes autonomy and agency
8. Develops a sense of mastery
9. Offers a first-hand look at real-world experiences without huge risks.
10. It makes Learning a personalized experience
Implementing gamification principles in learning environments can be a great way to create an engaging and immersive learning experience at home. Understanding the principles and techniques of game theory is important to do this. Start by identifying what tasks are struggles. Is it homework? is it household chores?
1. Identify the goal of the task and make sure it is clear, achievable, and visible to everyone.
2. Identify what motivates your family.
3. Determine gaming mechanics you will use to motivate your family.
4. Add time-based challenges and include surprise rewards
5. Make levels easier in the beginning
6. Adapt old-school games such as bingo and scrabble or create a quest or scavenger hunt.
7. Make use of online puzzles, trivia, and games
8. Make use of gamification apps.
9. PARTICIPATE! Play the game with your family, whether it is to motivate them through competition or to engage through collaboration.
Gamification at home is also a good way to get involved in your child's education! The idea of gamification is to transform activities and environments into games. Creative thinking, collaboration, and play are all required to make the hard stuff in life fun. ▪

High school students often face unique struggles as they prepare for college. The college experience can be overwhelming and complicated for anyone, but for a neurodivergent student, navigating unfamiliar environments and systems can be extremely daunting. Neurodivergent students have unique learning abilities, and educators, families, and other support systems need to understand and accommodate these differences and provide the necessary guidance and resources to ensure that these students succeed in school and beyond.
Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in the human brain and nervous system. It encompasses a range of conditions, such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and others. Neurodivergent students may need help with traditional learning methods, including sitting still, taking notes, and processing information linearly. They may also need help with social interactions and communication. One of the most critical steps in supporting students, in general, is to provide them with information and resources that help them make informed decisions about their college journey. Many colleges offer support services for neuro -

divergent students, such as tutoring, counseling, and assistive technology. Encourage your student to research these resources and determine which colleges have the services that best fit their needs. When transitioning to college life, neurodivergent students may face some unique challenges. However, there are several ways to make the process more manageable and effective for them.
The first step in supporting neurodivergent students is to identify their strengths and challenges, as well as their preferences and needs. These students may be exceptional in creativity, problem-solving, and pattern recognition. Learning methods must be tailored based on their strengths to assist students in building on their natural abilities. At the same time, identifying the challenges that neurodiverse students face, such as difficulty with time management or sensory processing issues, can help you provide targeted support, accommodations, and resources. For example, students who struggle with time management may benefit from a coach or mentor who can help them prioritize tasks and develop a schedule that works for them. By identifying and leveraging these strengths and providing targeted support to overcome their challenges, you provide targeted ways for them to succeed in college and beyond.
Another essential step is to ensure there are accommodations. These may range from assistive technology to extra time on tests or note-taking assistance. Technology can be a powerful tool for neurodivergent students. These accommodations can give neurodivergent students an equal opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities, creating an equal playing field. For example, visual learners usually benefit from diagrams and videos, while auditory learners tend to prefer lectures or discussions. A multimodal world includes visual, linguistic, aural, spatial, and gestural communication. By offering students multiple modes of instruction and information content, we ensure that all students have access to the information they need to succeed.
Lastly, and perhaps the most important way to support neurodiverse students is to have high expectations of them, just like you would have of a neurotypical student. It is crucial in promoting agency and self-advocacy. Believing in a student's ability to succeed can inspire them to take ownership of their learning and advocate for themselves. Encouraging neurodiverse students to set high goals and providing them with the necessary resources and support can help build confidence and self-efficacy. Empowering students to communicate their needs and accommodations can help them feel more in control of their education and advocate for themselves in other areas of their lives. By setting high expectations, we can help neurodiverse students reach their full potential and prepare them for success in college and beyond.
As students transition from high school to college, many face new challenges and require additional support. It is essential to be aware of the unique needs of neurodivergent students and to provide accommodations and resources as needed. By taking into account neurological differences and needs, you can effectively help neurodiverse students create environments where they have the capacity and opportunity to excel academically, emotionally, and mentally regardless of any intellectual disabilities, mental health conditions, or other special needs they may have. ▪
