We live in a world where significant moments tend to come about suddenly and pass in the blink of an eye. With the holidays just around the corner, it's time to pay extra at tention to your student's mental health. Winter break will be upon us soon but before the much-needed time off arrives, students will be in the thick of major deadlines and midterms. Pay special attention to your child's stress levels and make sure that they are getting adequate sleep, nutrition, and play. In this issue, we want to help you identify stress and burnout before we enter the busiest time of the year so that you can be present and make meaningful connections with your loved ones.

Our other featured article in this issue is on financial literacy. It's a tough economic time right now, and inflation rates keep soaring. The impact of inflation is felt in almost every aspect of our lives. A turbulent economic future makes financial literacy more cru cial than ever. Learning (or re-visiting) some basic steps can be beneficial for your entire family.

This issue is the one that resonates the most with me every year. It is the resource I wish I had when I was a parent in search of the right school for my three daughters. It is what birthed this passion project you

hold in your hands right now. I wanted to know the mission statements of schools, the class sizes, and the programs they offered. I also didn't want to have to call multiple schools (this was before everything was so readily accessible online) just to find out when or how I could take a tour. So we decided to put together this guide and designed it to be a start ing point, to guide families toward the best match for their family's needs and wants. We are also in a time where the education landcape is not just evolv ing quickly, it is innovating with intention. Signature courses like aviation and biotechnology prepare students for real-world careers. Extracurricular programs like investment club and diversity council prepare them to be conscious leaders. Private educa tion really is the ultimate investment in the future.

One such program graces the cover of this issue. Kendall Christian School purposefully creates and of fers well-rounded programs that meet their students where they are academically. For almost 50 years they have challenged students to strive for excel lence. I'm always in awe of the quality of education we have here in South Florida. The programs you will see in this issue take seriously the responsibility they have of preparing our children for the future. I hope that they are as much of a blessing in your life as they have been in mine.

From all of us at Private Schools Guide of South Florida, may you finish strong in the race that is 2022, and may the celebrations of the new year fill you with happiness and gratitude.

Financial Literacy

Teaching kids about money is never just about money.

It’s been said that your budget and calendar best reflect what you value because it documents how you spend your time and money. If you think about how you allocate these precious resources, you (like most people) will like ly find room for improvement. You are not alone. In the United States, most people are unaware of their spending habits. Sixty-five percent of Americans have no idea how much they spent last month according to mint.com. Gen Z has the lowest awareness, with 77% stating they were unaware of how much they spent in the prior month. Sec ondly, most people are in debt or barely getting by. In a 2020 survey conducted by the Federal Reserve, around 45 percent of adults spent more than or equal to their income. This means that this group is either in debt or not saving. Awareness may have slightly improved during 2022 due to rising inflation, impacting prices of gas, food, and beyond. Regardless, the majority of Americans are not financially stable and live reactively. The good news is that you can teach your children how to implement fi nancial literacy skills to eliminate that financial burden in the future.

What is financial literacy?

According to Investopedia, financial literacy is the ability to understand and use various financial skills, including personal financial management, budgeting, and invest ing.

Financial literacy education is beginning to spread into some schools' curriculums but is far from universal. That is why it is important to introduce these money manage ment lessons at home. Since most people didn’t formally learn about personal finance, the first step would be to educate yourself, using YouTube or classes like Financial Peace University. The best way to teach your kids finan cial literacy and any other skills is by modeling this be havior at home.

Why is it beneficial to teach kids about money?

Did you know that money habits in children are formed by age 7? If you have been putting off teaching your kids about money, this is a great reason to begin.

8 | PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2022
FEATURE Learning & Literacy Series "

If you’re still not convinced, there are three other benefits of teaching your kids about money:

1. Stable Relationships - Children who learn solid money habits from their parents have more fulfilling romantic relationships as young adults. Research from Dr. LeBar on-Black found that these children tend to save and bud get, leading to less stress about money, which alleviates financial pressure on the relationship.

2. Executive Function Skills - The act of saving money for a big purchase is one way for kids to practice executive function skills, including impulse inhibition and delayed gratification.

3. Minimized Stress - If you teach your children to save mon ey in an emergency fund, they will be calm and collected when life’s inevitable emergencies arise. Cars eventually break down and unexpected ER visits happen.

How can we implement financial literacy lessons at home for all ages?

Start by teaching kids that money is finite. Vocalize that mon ey is limited and takes effort to earn. The fact that money is finite can be a good thing. Based on the American psycholo gist Barry Schwartz’s book “The Paradox of Choice”, he argues

that an abundance of options requires more effort to make a decision and can lead to dissatisfaction with that choice. In essence, more choices can lead to more anxiety. In practice, this means saying “No” to some of your child’s requests for toys or activities, even if you can afford them. When teaching your kids about money, aim to give them small amounts to manage until they become mature enough to manage more. One way to do this with younger children is by gently reminding them that money is limited when saying no. With older children and teens, start by establishing a healthy boundary and reinforce the reason behind this with the lesson you want them to learn. For example, one way to teach this is to establish the boundary that you will cover their needs, but they are responsible for their wants. Reinforce that the reason behind this boundary is that there is a limit to the money you have.

Second, live below your means and free of debt. Make sure income (money earned) is lower than expenses (money spent). In other words, this means not getting into debt (borrowing money). Although our society deems debt normal, the concept of borrowing money from a lender has only become popular in the past 70 years. Student loans started in 1965 and the concept of consumer credit cards began in 1950. Living with out debt gives you the freedom to spend money however you desire, rather than relying on your paycheck to pay back loans. The one form of debt that most financial experts deem accept able is a mortgage, as this asset accrues value over time.

ey is to give first, save second, and spend third according to Christian financial expert Dave Ramsey. Why? To raise kind and generous future adults, the concept of sharing is vital. In the Bible, readers are instructed to give their first fruits and then manage the rest. Although many people believe in giving 10% to their church, you can customize this to what works best for your family.

Tangible cash is an effective way to learn about saving and money growth for kids. A study from the Journal of Experi mental Psychology Applied found that it’s psychologically more painful to pay with cash over a card, likely because you are physically handing over your tangible cash.

Since most people are visual learners, it is helpful to see sav ings grow by using a clear glass jar. Have your older kids save for an emergency fund first. You can choose the appropriate amount, but the idea is to have them be able to cover an unex pected expense, like a car breaking down.

Now that you have prioritized how you will give and save, you can manage the remaining money to spend on variable and fixed expenses. Fixed expenses are recurring payments that are the same amount month after month (like a mortgage). Variable expenses include food, gas, and shopping, and can vary greatly.

The next lesson is a difficult one for most. Establish “money boundaries” to avoid impulse purchases. If you tend to over

boundary can act as a buffer to make you pause in areas you tend to overspend. One way to implement this for younger kids is by allowing for purchases only on the weekends. For older children, have them consult with you on larger purchases. The idea is to advise them and help them make decisions on their own.

Other ideas for money boundaries:

• When eating out, get it to go. Takeout will allow you to skip delivery fees and high tipping for service.

• Stick to your grocery list. If it’s not on the list, it can’t go home with you.

• Consult with one other person before making large pur chases.

Lastly, it is beneficial to have written budgets and track what you spend. A budget documents how much you plan to spend, save, give, and can be organized into categories.

The components of a good budget are:

• Put giving first, saving second, and spending third

• Budget before spending happens. The ideal budget is done per paycheck so if you get paid once a month on the 20th of the month, you can set up your budget days before this and update it throughout the month.

• Include a “planned”, “actuals'', and “remaining” column to see if you have overspent or underspent in any categories When first starting, it’s best to update it often.

The method you choose to budget is up to you. Many people pre fer mobile apps like Mint or EveryDollar, some like Excel, and others prefer pen and paper. When implementing this with young children, use the envelope system for giving and spending and a clear jar for savings. Another important reminder is to gently guide them with realistic goals and teach them how to adjust expectations.

Play is Powerful

According to American author Diane Ackerman, play is our brain's favorite way of learning. Without a doubt, most people, especially children, learn best when they are actively engaged in experiences. If you are looking for meaningful ways to play and learn with your family, Monopoly is a great game to teach kids about finance, money, and life skills−such as planning, negoti ating, and even learning how to lose. It's also a fun way to teach important financial concepts such as saving, borrowing, invest ing, delaying gratification, and dealing with the consequences of your decisions. For older children, it is an opportunity to in troduce more advanced concepts such as interest, compounding, inflation, diversification, mortgages, and bankruptcy even if you have to bend the rules to make the game match real life more closely. Newer, themed versions also make the game current and interesting while still bridging generational gaps so that younger and older family members can enjoy playing together.

Another plus is that an average game of Monopoly takes anywhere from 60-90 minutes to complete, keeping family entertained for a lot longer than most other games. That's 60-90 minutes of de veloping concentration skills, reinforcing math, and introducing financial basics. Give it a try and be intentional about your game time. Monopoly is one of the most financially educational games on the market and it is also a lot of fun!

Financial literacy has a direct material impact on families and helps create stable communities. Understanding and managing money is one of the most vital life lessons and happens to be a skill that few formally learn. Thankfully, financial education and literacy are becoming noteworthy trends in innovative education programs around the country. The Dorothy L. Hukill Financial Literacy Act, which goes into effect during the 2023-2024 school year, will require Florida high school students to take a person al finance class before graduating. Although this is a good step towards meeting the need for financial education programs, it is still best for parents to introduce these money management skills at home. If financial literacy is the confident understand ing of money (i.e. how to save, earn, borrow, invest, and protect money) that leads to an overall sense of financial well-being and freedom, then the opportunities for building these skills and hab its should be introduced early on at home and encouraged in the classroom. ▪

"Financial education is more valuable than money.

Dr. Maria Montessori wrote, “Within the child is the person he will become.” The Mission of Alexander Montessori School is to cultivate children’s natural curiosity, independence, and love of learning as they discover the interdependent nature of life, explore their unique purpose, and peacefully transform the world. Our task is to aid children in their work of self-creation, to help them become independent learners and thinkers who have a foundation for a lifelong love of learning and intellectual curiosity. As we grow in our independence, we are working toward fulfilling our School Motto: Help me to help myself in order that I may help others.

Our Progressive school Program provides the tools for active learning that utilize the innate curiosity in all children. Education is successful when young innovators are inspired to delve broadly and deeply into learning. Interdisciplinary, thematic units that challenge students to utilize critical, creative, and problem-solving skills in meaningful ways seamlessly integrate our core subjects. Academically rigorous language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, arts, physical education, and modern languages are offered in a fun, meaningful way. Students are guided to master major concepts, processes and skills as they build connections between ideas. Children are given opportunities for self-directed inquiry as well as collaboration with their peers. The goal is to teach children “how to think, not what to think” as they prepare to be outstanding global citizens.

Avoiding Student Burnout

Burnout is a national epidemic, evident during the 2021 “Great Resignation” where 4.3 million Americans quit their jobs. In a 2021 survey of 1500 workers, over 50 percent claimed that they were burned out from work. This sentiment has trickled down to kids as academics and life, in general, have become more demanding than ever before.

If you believe your student is experiencing burnout or on their way to burning out, it is important to know the warning signs. With your guidance and support, your student can reverse or avoid burnout altogether.

What is burnout?

The World Health Organization defines burnout as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully man aged.” It results from doing too much for too long. The term academic burnout also refers to exhaustion and disengagement experienced by students after being exposed to specific demands on a long-term basis with no time to relax or recharge. The term can also refer to a student's feeling of debilitation, pessi mism, and low confidence in their capacity and skills to achieve goals.

Burnout is easily confused with stress, but they are not the same:

1. Burnout specifically stems from workload, which in a student’s case is academic workload, while stress can originate in any area of life.

2. Stress tends to occur in spurts, such as when pulling an all-nighter for a big test, causing nerves. Once the test finishes, stress likely sub sides. On the other hand, burnout is chronic, resulting from a prolonged period of stress.

3. Burnout results in 3 specific areas: exhaustion, mental distance from workload, and reduced effi cacy (more mistakes).

4. People experiencing burnout tend to feel hope less about their situation.

58 | PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2022 FEATURE

Why do we get burned out?

According to research conducted by UC Berkeley, burnout can arise from different areas, including tak ing on too much work, feeling a lack of control over workload, experiencing little reward for the effort required, and doing tasks that seem contradictory to values. Student burnout is often caused by a combi nation of school factors such as learning pressure, teaching environment, workload, interpersonal rela tionships, as well as family factors such as parenting styles, parental support, and socioeconomic status. It is characterized by physical exhaustion, mental fatigue, and emotional separation.

The long-term impact of burnout is astounding, with physical health issues like diabetes, heart disease, prolonged fatigue, headaches, respiratory issues, gastrointestinal problems, and shortened life span. Burnout can also contribute to depression and insom nia. It is easy to forget that we decide what gets our time and attention. To protect our well-being (and that of our kids and family alike), we must be will ing to go against the grain of saying “yes” to every opportunity that arises.

How can you help lighten your student’s load?

Remove unnecessary commitments. Write down all academic commitments with your child for this school year. Circle the more important ones and cross off the ones that can be skipped. No one can do it all, all the time. If it’s not possible to be on the committee of three clubs and maintain grades, your child may need to step down from one commitment to focus on school. Sometimes, all they need is your permission to let go of a commitment without feel ing like they are disappointing you. This should be an ongoing assessment (perhaps every semester or school year).

Become a single-tasker. According to research in neuroscience by Psychology Today, our brains are not capable of multitasking (completing tasks simultane ously). Rather, we are capable of switching between tasks quickly, but it comes at a cost. When you stop a task to start a new one, that in-between stop/start process slows us down and can result in mistakes and drained energy. In a world full of distractions, it is possible that multitasking is contributing to burn out.

For example, your student is fully concentrated on study ing for a big test but hears their phone “ding” with a noti fication. On average it takes about 15 minutes to resume an interrupted activity at a good level of concentration but if your child is constantly starting and stopping a task it is likely that they are never concentrating well as they are multitasking or just switching rapidly between different activities. We know that repeated interruptions affect con centration but constant interruptions can have the same effect as the loss of a night's sleep. Consider asking your child to do one task at a time. During homework time, distractions like phones should be in another room and out of sight to allow for concentration. They can set the expectation with friends and family by letting them know that during 4-6 PM, they are unavailable. Most cell phones have a do not disturb mode that can be a very intentional way to focus.

Schedule downtime at home. If your child always has somewhere to be or something to do, there is no opportu nity to rest and recharge. Try to prioritize downtime daily and on the weekend. This is the only time in your child’s life when they will have breaks, such as spring, summer, and winter breaks. Although it may be tempting to fill these breaks with activities, doing less can be good for their physical and mental health.

Seek help when needed. There will be seasons in your student’s life that are busier than others, such as junior and senior years as they prepare for college. Turning to your community for support can help during these hectic times. Leverage your village, including guidance counsel ors, education consultants, and tutors in areas that are

beyond your and your student’s expertise. For example, if your student has never written a schol arship essay before, it can seem like a daunting task to learn from scratch. Consulting with a col lege counselor for guidance can ease the stress as the counselor likely has sample essays to refer to.

Ensure basic needs are met. It's true that stress and burnout overlap, but when burnout sneaks in, simple tasks that take minimal effort become difficult to perform. This crash can cause individ uals to ignore even the most basic needs such as getting proper nutrition and adequate sleep, main taining good hygiene, and investing time in rela tionships. These signs should not be overlooked. A prolonged state of fatigue and malnutrition can lead to serious illness and is detrimental to your mental health.

Knowing how to get off the burnout path is import ant. It starts by prioritizing yourself, reducing exposure to stressors, and seeking out meaningful connections. Establishing boundaries can also help your student daily. Here are two ideas to start with:

1. Make sure your child has a firm bedtime, regardless of their age. Adequate sleep is the key to good health and a consistent early bedtime is just as important. Late sleepers don't always get the recommended amount of sleep. Remove devices or limit wifi access after certain times to make sure your student sleeps without interruptions or distractions.

2. Eat dinner at the table as a family. Not only is it a simple way of disconnecting from all stressors for a short time but it will help you ensure your child is also eating a proper meal and having rich interpersonal interactions. It is a perfect opportunity to grant your family pleasure over productivity.

As Esther Perel, a psychotherapist, says “The quality of your life ultimately depends on the quality of your relationships.” To raise well-rounded and happy kids, prioritizing the basics is essential.

Too much is at stake, including both mental and phys ical health. Consider implementing these tips to help your student avoid burnout. In a world that glorifies busyness, it may seem counterintuitive to lighten your student’s academic load, but the long-term impact is worth the courage to challenge the status quo. ▪
