to send a special congratulations to Florida Christian School as they celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. Thank you for making Christ preeminent in every aspect of your educational program. Lastly, we want to send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those lost on February 14th. As the editor of this magazine, what happened in our community at Marjory Stoneman Douglas was sobering and still breaks my heart. As a mother of three daughters, it leaves me feeling helpless — but not hopeless. R Media Publishing stands with all the schools in our community, public and private, every educator, every student and every parent to remember and honor the lives of those lost in Parkland. Together, may we be the change we want to see in our schools and in our community.

Endless Possibilities
Across Broad Horizons
F
or students at The Benjamin School, the horizon stretches endlessly. Inside and outside the classroom, students across all three divisions (PK3 - Grade 12) learn to succeed in a traditional academic environment, complemented by project-based learning outside their classroom walls. Founded in 1960 by Nancy and Marshall Benjamin, The Benjamin School has been defining academic excellence in South Florida for almost 60 years. Combining tradition and innovation, our expansive curriculum connects 15 grade levels and sets Benjamin apart as one of the nation’s premier independent day schools. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin may not have imagined the 21st century global experiences our students would have, but they were educational pioneers who had an appreciation for world language, reading and a code of ethics that are hallmarks of the School’s culture. In the Lower School, our youngest students enjoy outside play and enrichment, including gardening and STEM building activities, on our safe and secure campus. Beginning in first grade, each class has the opportunity to travel off-campus for a variety of field trips, including: the Flagler Museum, Bedner’s Farm, Eissey Theatre and the Circle F Dude Ranch for a team-building adventure. Middle School students fight hunger by participating in food recovery at Mecca Farms where they glean produce for local families in need. Their sitelines are also extended to Washington, D.C. and the Florida Keys for history and science field trips, as well as to

St. Augustine for a journey back through Florida history. You can find Upper School students performing onstage in a student-directed play in a oneof-a-kind high school theater, attending an “in-house” field trip to observe live cardiac surgery in Benjamin Hall, or competing on our athletic fields. They may participate in a community service trip to the Grenadines, a language trip to China or a historical journey in Cuba. When the horizon expands beyond high school graduation, our students are prepared for the nation’s most competitive colleges and universities. Our dedicated team of educators works tirelessly to show students that the horizon is only limited by one’s field of vision. At Benjamin, that scope is broad and ever-expanding. n

Unexpected Innovators Of Our Time:
Parents and Educators T
he conversation at home regarding safety in schools has gone from “what if” to the dreaded “when”. School shootings are no longer a rare tragedy we have to deal with but rather a reality for which we must be prepared. As the debates rage on regarding the need for gun control legislation and the possibility of arming our teachers continues to divide us, we are seeing brave children stand up and advocate for their future. Yes, we may find ourselves in the wake of yet another tragedy, with lumps in our throats and that paralyzing feeling of helplessness, but we must overcome fear and shine the light on all the good that emerges out of darkness. While we wait for the dust to settle, a rare breed of innovators rises to the challenge, ready to forge a safer path for students. Innovators, who can no longer wait on change to happen and who can no longer count on the system in place to keep children safe. Innovators, who by day hold jobs to sustain their families and by night sit and create ways where others see none. Innovators, who refuse to accept that nothing can be done until the real issues are addressed.
to keep track of who comes in and out, but what if the point of entry is breached? How do parents and educators fulfill that responsibility of keeping their children safe? Educators and parents have now become some of the greatest innovators of our time. They have created and designed products, that while they don’t solve the overall problems, help advocate for safer schools.
“Sometimes in tragedy we find our life’s purpose. The eye sheds a tear to find its focus.” — Robert Brault
When it comes to their children being away at school, parents have dealt with the feeling of helplessness for far too long. They have put their trust in the school system, to not only educate and prepare children for the future, but also to make sure that they make it there safely. Educators have relied on strict visitor policies in place and designated single points of entry, to help keep assailants out of their classrooms. These are great ways 14 l PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE / 2018
Z.E.R.O. Program
The Zone Emergency Response Operation is program that empowers students and administrators in their response to an emergency situation and reduces the response time for emergency personnel. Safer Compass Foundation’s Z.E.R.O. Program can help parents, students and teachers feel confident in their emergency response preparedness. Created by parents Jeffrey and Jennifer Childers in 2013, the program is designed to assist first responders in getting to emergency situations with a 75% reduction time. Jeffrey Childers, a homicide detective with Miami-Dade Police Department created the program with his wife, Jennifer, a teacher at Somerset Academy in Miami-Dade. The Zone Emergency Response Operation program divides schools into four zones, providing the ability to identify threats, render aid, manage responding resources, and coordinate efforts with a reduced response time when time is critical. In field test performed, the fastest recorded time in locating a targeted area was 26 seconds, proving the program to be a wild success. The program works by mapping the school into four easy to remember
zones. Zone 1 and 2 are always in the north direction while 3 and 4 are south. The zones are then divided into four micro zones designated by the letters A, B, C, and D, and follow the same directional mapping. In a pilot test with four emergency responders, they tested the time it took to get a responder to a teacher having a heart attack in the cafeteria. Once on campus, it took four emergency responders approximately 5-12 minutes to locate the cafeteria and the teacher in distress. They then tested the same simulated emergency except this time the responders were told the teacher was in zone 1A. Emergency responders knew it was in the north west quadrant of the school based on the implemented ZONE maps. Emergency Responders were able to reach the teacher in distress in under 2 minutes drastically cutting down time in a situation where time was critical. In situations where there may be an active shooter, students can identify and alert authorities with ease rather than wasting time trying to explain where building 3 is located. In the unfortunate event of an active shooter, with the Z.E.R.O. program in place, students in each zone will know to avoid, barricade, communicate, or defend. The zone-specific grids are placed in hallways, behind doors, and anywhere that is easily accessible so that the reader immediately knows what zone they are in. “Security systems don’t assist emergency responders, but technology is enhanced by utilizing this Z.E.R.O. system.” Jeff emphasizes the importance of the program not only in schools and universities but also in parks since they are common reunification sites during school shootings or lockdowns. Currently, the program is in five Miami-Dade schools and also in local churches and parks. For more information on how you can get this program in your school visit their website at www.safercompass.org.
The Sleeve
In 2013, five educators in Iowa conceived an idea to help protect students and teachers by securing the door’s closer found on most classroom doors. The teachers were undergoing the school’s active shooter training when the idea for The Sleeve was born. The team organized Fighting Chance Solutions and collaborated to design and realize this life-saving device. “We were instructed to tie a belt or a cord around the closer arm. It seemed like a logical way to secure a door without having to go into the hallway, [but] it took us a long time to get a cord, stand on a chair, and tie a knot, which could potentially be the most important tie of your life,” he told a local news station in Iowa of the training session that inspired The Sleeve. “I can tell you in our training, all five rooms that the teachers were trained in; the doors were breached, the cords were ripped, and the officer who was portraying the active shooter came in and killed all of us.”This birthed the idea behind the 12-gauge carbon steel case that is able to withstand 550 foot-pounds of pressure on the door from the outside.
been some mixed reactions from parents, this is not the first bulletproof school product to hit the market. This idea came to Cejas when he attended the school’s active shooter drill as a parent. Students were instructed to wear their backpacks on their chests and hold them close. Cejas, who runs the body armor company, set up the school with a custom order for parents who were interested. The school has stopped fulfilling direct orders but parents interested in the inserts can go directly to the manufacturer.
The Boot
Inspired by a tragic attack of a close family member, father of three, Rob Couturier, invented a device designed to keep wouldbe attackers out of classrooms. The Boot is a square-shaped steel device that hangs from each door and can be dropped into two pre-drilled holes in the floor, immediately making it impossible to open from the outside. The name for the device came from the maneuver where the man’s family member jammed his boots against the door successfully keeping the door shut until the police arrived. After the Sandy Hook shooting, Rob quit his part-time job doing maintenance for schools and began visiting districts all over the state talking to schools about his device. The goal is to deter attackers when they can’t get through the door and give law enforcement time to respond. While these programs and devices don’t solve the underlying problems behind these tragedies, they are welcome innovate outlets for parents and educators. Dr. Allison Agliata, mother of three and a clinical psychologist turned principal says, “Humanity is complicated and so rather than concentrating on the fear of what could happen, my main objective is to instill a sense of power in my children so that they don’t let random, single incidents impede their love of life and quest for adventure. There is so much to experience in life that I never want them to take the safe route out of fear.” This is a promise we can keep. A promise to empower our children so they never lose hope. n
Bulletproof backpack inserts
In 2017, Florida Christian School offered ballistic panel inserts for book bags. The company that makes these protective backpack inserts is owned by Alex Cejas, who has two children that attend Florida Christian. The inserts are optional and weigh less than one pound, adding another level of protection to students in the event of an active shooter. Although there have 2018 / PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE l 15

Summer Camp Returns to Miami Seaquarium—Full of New Activities and Learning Experiences Camp Seaquarium runs from June 11, 2018 – August 18, 2018 for Ages 5 – 18
With summer vacation just a few months away, parents are looking for exciting and innovative ways to keep their children engaged in education outside the classroom. Summer Camp 2018 at Miami Seaquarium offers students from kinder¬garten to high school the opportunity to learn about animal senses and behavior, environmental issues, and the relation¬ship between humans and marine animals. Summer activities for kids will focus on educational topics according to their grade level. This year’s camp themes are “Earth Buddies,” “Ocean Explorers,” “Cold-blooded Critters,” “Aqua Powers,” “Beyond the Reef,” plus the return of “Counselor in Training (CIT) Program.” This year’s Summer Camp is full of new games, activities, and learning experiences! Register online before June 1st and get the early bird special rate of $175 per week. Or pre-register online by the Fri¬day before the beginning of each week for the special rate of $195. Miami Seaquarium is also offer¬ing an entire 5-week session for just $850, a $1,250 value (campers must register online for a full 5-week consecutive ses¬sion to receive the special pricing).
Special rates are available for annual pass holders. Special pricing at Dolphin Harbor is available for parents who wish to enroll their campers in an unforgettable Dol¬phin Interaction program. Parents who have registered campers ages 10 and up also will have the opportunity to enroll their campers in a Reef Encounter (Sea Trek). Camp hours are Monday through Fri¬day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with early and late care available starting from 8:00p.m to 5:30p.m for an additional charge. For Summer Camp enrollment or additional information, please call 305-361-5705, ext. 526 or 207 or visit www.miamiseaquarium.com/camp. Miami Seaquarium is a marine-life park, located on the beautiful Biscayne Bay in South Florida that provides visitors with a greater understanding and appreciation for marine life through shows, presentations and exhibits. s birthdays and holidays roll around each year, parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles struggle with what gifts to give the children in their lives. It is no secret that the summer camp experience has many benefits for campers but there is finally research to support that claim. Over 5,000 families participated in a study supported by a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. where parents, campers, and program staff reported growth in areas such as self-confidence, independence, making friends, exploring and learning new activities, and spirituality. These are important skills that children take into adulthood. It is hard to break free from the mentality that because we have something tangible and permanent we have the best value. In reality, experiences become part of our identity. B.J. Neblett put it best when he said, “We are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences – be they positive or negative – make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow.” Giving the gift of camp is a timeless gift, and if you are the extended family or friend of the child, it is a gift that their parents will greatly appreciate. The return on this investment in our children, to learn through play and develop life skills, is priceless. It provides them with time to be physically active, gain resiliency and become more confident, develop social skills, and a relaxing environment to be themselves and make lasting friendships. According to the research of Dr. Thomas Gilovich of Cornell University, the trouble with possessions is that the happiness they provide fades quickly. “One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation,” Gilovich said, identifying what would come to be referred to as the paradox of possessions. Humans are incredibly adaptive and so new things can be exciting at first but then we adapt to them. Once we adapt, we want more and better things and this leads to comparison and envy of the things others have that we don’t. The beautiful thing about gifting camp is that there are programs with all kinds of fun for all kinds of kids. Let’s give the children in our lives a summer to remember and a gift they will cherish forever. Let’s give them the perfect gift—summer camp. n

Healthy Balance We know that camps can provide incredible experiences, and now those experiences are expanding. With camps specializing in all sorts of interests, we are seeing a trend in camps revamping their menus to include healthier food options. Kids are constantly exploring environments where they can feel good about their accomplishments by discovering new skills, new friends, and enjoy time outdoors. At camps we feel secure that our kids are getting what they need to develop physically; however, a good camp will also encourage children to find and establish healthy lifestyles. Summer Camps are beginning to surround campers with healthier options such as salad bars and fresh fruits while also accommodating dietary restrictions for children with food allergies and diabetes, and vegetarians. Summer camps will still hold on to their tradition of s’mores, but will also offer healthier options. This is a step in the right direction and another way for children to attune with nature. n
