elcome b a c k ! We hope you all had a memorable summer! As we head into every parent’s favorite time of the year, we want to thank you for picking up this very special issue, our first back-toschool issue. This will be an additional summer issue to our spring and fall installments. I know that back-to-school season is exciting but truth be told, it can also be very stressful. We hope that with our newly redesigned directory and all the information we have gathered for you in this issue, we can make this transition into a new school year a smooth one. As we settle into our routines for this year, I want to take a minute to thank all the teachers, staff and administrators that have been working hard during the summer to prepare for this coming school year. New buildings and campus initiatives, new administrations and
teachers, new designations and enhanced curriculums—all with your student and family in mind. We also want to Congratulate Divine Savior Academy as they open the doors to their new Delray Beach campus.
August 2018 - Volume 10 #2
Our team was also busy this summer redesigning and updating our private school directory. We removed defunct listings, included grade levels offered by each school, highlighted schools with learning difference programs, and organized the directory by county and category, making it easier to navigate through our guide. We have also included a legend with a brief description of each category to help you narrow down the perfect school for your family. We hope you enjoy this special issue. Make sure to grab a copy of our next issue, this October, for an indepth guide of each school’ s special programs and courses, national school awards, merit scholarships, extracurricular programs, financial aid plans and more.

MIAMI’S ONLY IB WORLD SCHOOL FOR DYSLEXIC STUDENTS better world through intercultural understanding and respect.
T
he Roig Academy announced their designation as an IB World School, making them Miami’s only IB World School dedicated to students with learning differences. Through the International Baccalaureate Programme, The Roig Academy will offer students a continuum of international education. Students will be taught to think critically and independently, and learn how to inquire with care and logic through curriculums that have been developed in over 150 countries around the world. Together, they will develop students who will build a
8 l PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE / 2018
The IB curriculum covers all the stages of a student’s educational life from age 3 to 19, encouraging each child to think critically and challenge assumptions while also considering both local and global contexts. The curriculum consist of four programmes: Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, Diploma Programme and Careerrelated Programme, all of which encourage both personal and academic achievement, challenging students to excel in their studies and in their personal development. The IB curriculum aims to do more than other curricula
because it is developed independently of government and national systems but is strengthened through relationships with governments and international organizations globally. The Roig Academy is 1 of 24 independent schools in the state of Florida, yet the only one in Miami serving dyslexic students in grades K-8. Their goal of an IB education is to inspire students to become openminded risk takers who are principled and reflective learners and leaders and the embodiment of The Roig Approach: Reflect, Observe, Inquire and Grow (ROIG).

A Look Into Individualized Education at Fusion Academy Since Fusion is such a unique place, we often get a lot of questions about what our one-to-one school looks like. Here’s a Q&A with our Head of School, Maria Cardenas, where she addresses some of our most commonly asked questions.
Q A
What is a day in the life like for a Fusion student?
With everything being customizable and individualized at Fusion – it’s hard to say! We look at the social-emotional needs of our students, as well as their academic needs. Many students come to us full-time and we are their school of choice where they will graduate from. Other times, we have students who may come to us for a few courses or even for tutoring. We’re open Monday-Friday from 7:30am-7:30pm, so students can take classes with us whenever it works best for their wants and needs.
Q A
What does homework look like at Fusion?
Both students and parents will be happy to know that no homework goes home at Fusion! We have Homework Cafés® on our campus where students do their homework in a relaxed environment between classes and at the end of the day. We provide everything our students need to be successful in completing their assignments – paper, pencils, laptops, scanners, and printers. We have a Fusion staff member in the Homework Cafés® at all times that oversees and assists students with their homework when needed. When students are done with class at the end of the day, they get to leave with the peace of mind that comes from being homework-free and spend the evenings with their families or doing extracurricular interests.
Q A
If all of the classes are one-to-one, how do students socialize?
Socialization is a big part of what we do at Fusion – it just doesn’t take place in the classroom! Students spend several hours a week in our Homework Café® doing their homework and also engaging socially with their peers and teachers. Air hockey games, races, collaborative puzzles, and just hanging out happens every day for our students! Similar to larger schools, we offer clubs, field trips, and an annual prom! Students also vote monthly on different activities like movie nights, laser tag, bowling, and sporting events to attend as a school community.

SchoolforChoice Children with Special Needs N
o one school can ever fit the needs of every child. If you have a child with special needs, this is especially true. There are many criteria that families can list as reasons to choose one school over another and all of them are unique to each student. Miami has several schools of choice for families of children with special needs.
to the special needs population. There is great similarity to the reasons listed above for this choice. Families often want this environment so their child is around other peers who have similar experiences as they do. They also make this choice so they can have their child in a school that specializes in the needs unique to their child.
One area of particular interest is inclusion versus self-contained classrooms or even schools. There are arguments for a family choosing either. Many education experts and families who seek inclusion classrooms for their children often do so for the purpose of exposure to typically developing students. There are several reasons to seek this exposure including peer role models and the feeling of acceptance for the student. Additionally, there is the added benefit of providing positive examples for what children with special needs can accomplish to the general population. Both reasons have their value. Other families choose schools that cater solely
Miami has several options for parents of children with special needs to choose from for their child. Parents should do their research on the school and look for the following: teacher-student ratios; curriculum; individualized instruction; extracurricular activities; athletics; and cost. Living in Florida allows families to seek McKay and Gardiner Scholarships to assist with the cost of paying tuition at a private school. There are some hoops to jump through for this funding, but it is easily explained and well worth the time to apply.

CHOOSING A PRIVATE SCHOOL Y
ou have the right and the responsibility to select the appropriate school to meet your child’s learning needs. No one knows your child’s special traits, needs, strengths and weaknesses better than you. Parents choosing the best private school for their child typically locate all possible candidate schools in relation to the home address.
The School’s Philosophy Each private school has a stated purpose and philosophy unique to that school. Some place an emphasis on college preparation. Some are vocational, while others seek to meet the needs of children with particular learning styles. When considering a private school, parents are encouraged to ask to see the school’s statement of purpose and philosophy to determine if the stated direction of the school is suitable to the needs of their child. The Faculty and Administration Certification of
private school teachers and administrators is not required in Florida. Therefore, parents are encouraged to ask questions about the faculty and administration. Do all of the teachers hold four-year college or university degrees? Does the school provide continuing education programs for its teachers? How long has the principal or school head been at the school? What is his or her administrative qualification and background? Although private schools are not required to do background checks of all teachers, state law does require background checks of all school chief administrators, all early childhood faculty and staff, and authorizes a background check of all teachers and school employees who have contact with students. Certified teachers are automatically part of the background check process.
The Academic Program Since the academic program offered at a private school is not part of the state system, parents should have a clear understanding of the school’s authorization to issue report cards, diplomas and transcripts. Good private schools should be forthcoming that their program meets or exceeds state standards. They will also advertise the successful placement of their graduates in the next level of schooling.
Diplomas and Transcripts For private schools,
accreditation is not required and is achieved by the school’s adopting and maintaining the academic standards pre36 l PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE / 2018
scribed by an independent accrediting association, usually affiliated with the school’s religion or educational philosophy. There are many accrediting organizations for private schools and many private schools that are not accredited at all. Most postsecondary training programs, colleges and prospective employers require that the applicant’s high school diploma and transcript be from an accredited school. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is the regional accrediting agency for the twelve southeastern states and the only accrediting agency for Florida’s public and state university system schools. Many private schools in Florida are also SACS accredited.
Financial Policies and Practices Private schools all have specific policies and practices governing financial matters. During your research, make sure that all expectations regarding tuitions and fees are published and part of the contract that you will sign. It is important that schools are transparent regarding not only the policies and practices concerning payment of tuition but also concerning the history and financial stability of the school. Governance Private schools are governed in a variety of ways. Some by a school board elected by the parents, some by specific churches or religious bodies, some by boards or trustees and some are proprietary schools. It is important to find out what form of governance is used in the school. It is also to know that the expectations are for student conduct, parent involvement, and the process of communication between home and school. You and Your Child Generally, the right school for you
will be the school that most closely reflects the values and routines you have established at home; the one that is most comfortable for you and your child. Your child benefits from being involved with you in the process of finding that right school. By collecting information, talking to other parents, visiting schools and exercising your rights responsibly, you assume your rightful role in assuring that your child receives a quality education. By staying actively involved with the school, by providing other learning opportunities at home and in the community and by supervising homework, you can make your child’s school years very productive and rewarding for all concerned. TURN STRESS into Success
F
or parents everywhere, the end of summer is often marked by a sigh of relief. The thought of the structure that comes with going back to school is welcomed with open arms by exhausted parents. However, children can experience anxiety when it comes to going back to school, especially if they are moving to a new school or a more challenging curriculum. There are many things that produce anxiety in children and identifying them is important. Situational Anxiety is marked by changing events or new situations. A new school, maybe even just a new class can make a child feel anxious or stressed. There are many things that you can do as a parent to help them deal and work through this. Set some structure and a routine for them, establish a bedtime so that they get the rest they need and make mornings less stressful by leaving everything ready the night before. ake time to stop and smell the flowers. The use of aromatic oils is inseparable from the history of herbal medicine. The Egyptians are credited with developing one of the first distillation machines to extract oils from plants. They used aromatic plants for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. The Greeks developed a fragrance consisting of myrrh which they used for healing practices. The Chinese are thought to have used the practice of infused aromatic oils as a mood enhancer or what we more closely relate to today as aromatherapy. Essential oils have been around for centuries and have been used by many cultures around the world. Recently we have seen an emergence in the classrooms with many teachers diffusing oils to reducing undesirable behavior, calm and relieve stress, enhance concentration, boost confidence and stay healthy with their antibacterial and antiviral properties. There are hundreds of oils and oil blends out there but our favorite two to start off with are Peppermint and Lavender. Peppermint eases tension, alleviates mental fatigue, uplifts mood, boosts energy and alertness and improves focus. Lavender can be used before bedtime or during high periods of stress. Lavender is best known for its calming effect which lowers levels of anxiety and stress. It is also known to promote relaxation which leads to restful sleep. Because essential oils are a natural, easy-to-use solution it is practical to incorporate them into your routine with very little effort but always make sure you read about sensitivities as they can also have adverse effects. The use of essential oil is not meant to substitute medical advice and you should always consult your doctor.
to decrease. Focused breathing is widely recommended for everyone—including kids. So when you see your child starting to get anxious or stressed, try some of these techniques before the fight or flight response settles in.
1. For a natural tranquilizer try the 4-7-8 exercise. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Exhale completely through your mouth to a count of eight. This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths. 2. To increase alertness and an energy boost try the bellows breath exercise. Inhale and exhale rapidly through your nose, keeping your mouth closed but relaxed. Your breaths in and out should be equal in duration, but as short as possible. Then try for three in-and-out breath cycles per second. Breathe normally after each cycle. Start at 15 seconds on your first try and increase in increments of 5 seconds until you reach a minute. 3. For stress try this breath counting exercise. To begin the exercise, count one to yourself as you exhale. The next time you exhale, count two, and so on up to five. Every time you reach five, begin a new cycle at one. Count only when you exhale and never count higher than five. Try to do this breathing exercise for 10 minutes. Do you remember when you taught your child to ride a bike? Was he or she scared to get on at first? Did they ask you not to let go? Did you anticipate that they may fall once or twice? Did that keep you from teaching them? No. Instead, we bought them colorful helmets and kneepads to distract their fears while at the same time equipping them for an inevitable fall. Most importantly, we encouraged them that all they had to do was try as we ran behind them yelling, “I’m right here, keep going, you got this!” We all have different things that both trigger us and motivate us. This transitional period when children head back to school is the ideal time to identify stressors and give your children control over their stress and their success.
T
ake a deep breath. According to the American institute of Stress, controlled breathing each day will reduce anxiety and stress and help keep the mind and body functioning at their best. Breathing exercises work because they increases the supply of oxygen to the brain and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest system) which promotes calmness. Practicing these breathing exercises causes your body to change its physical and emotional response to anxiety and stress. As you begin to take focused breaths your nitric oxide levels increase causing your heart rate, blood pressure and muscle tension 2018 / PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE l 49
