e start this year with a very special milestone. A Milestone that we fully understand could not have been achieved on our own merits but by the strong relationships we have built since 2009. It has been 10 years now since our first issue was published and there is no better time to share the story of how this ship set sail and why. I was a single mother of three girls trying to find a school that met the individual needs of my children and reinforced the values and principles I was teaching them at home. What began as daunting research to fulfill my own parenting needs, quickly turned into an opportunity to connect prospective parents with quality education. Connecting them to schools where their children could find enriched academic and extracurricular opportunities, dedicated teachers, a safe environment and a shared educational philosophy. here is an old adage that says, “you haven’t truly failed until you quit trying.” Even as adults it doesn’t come as second nature to deal with setbacks so how do we get our kids to understand it and keep trying? Teaching your child to develop grit and to be resilient are essential life skills that will help them grow into confident, self-sufficient adults. There are many approaches you can take to help them understand the importance of this life skill but it must go well beyond just modeling perseverance. Here are a few simple ways you can start to effect powerful change with your family and develop grit.
Praise Failures! Sara Blakely, founder of the company Spanx said her family dinner conversations were a bit different than most kids. Her dad made it a habit to talk about failures at the dinner table. While most kids were 4 l PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE / 2019
asked what they learned at school or how their day went, she was asked about her setbacks. “If I didn’t have something that I had failed at, he actually would be disappointed. I can remember coming home from school and saying, ‘Dad, I tried out for this and I was horrible!’ and he would high-five me and say, ‘Way to go!’ Blakely credits her father for retraining her thinking about failing and for instilling in her the real value in failure. The fear of failing can really hold back a child from their full potential. It is time we stop treating failure like the “F” word and embrace it with grace. So encourage them to fail and fail often!
Do they love it? Kids should absolutely be encouraged to try new things, even things they may not have initial
Teach kids that intelligence can be developed. While your brain is actually an organ, its function is similar to that of a muscle—If you don’t use it, you lose it! Teach your kids that their brain functions like a muscle and needs to be exercised. Children will work harder because they understand that more they use it the stronger it gets. A recent study showed that students who were told they can get smarter if they trained their brains to be stronger did better in school. Carol Dweck, a social psychologist at Stanford University, studies human motivation. Her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, examines how something as simple as wording can have a powerful impact on our ability to improve. She theorizes that there are two mindsets, a Fixed Mindset where intelligence is static versus a Growth Mindset, where intelligence can be developed. This theory of mindsets and the difference they make in outcomes can have a powerful impact on our kids. The growth mindset has been shown to produce perseverance and resilience. In her book Dweck says, “failure can be a painful experience. But it doesn’t define you. It’s a problem to be faced, dealt with, and learned from.” Our kids should be anything and everything they want to be—except quitters.

interest in or be skilled at yet. However, If we want to steer them away from forming a habit of quitting, we must first evaluate their strengths and interests and encourage them on the path of what they love to do. There is a reason that learn-through-play teaching methods are so wildly successful—because kids love to play! Encouraging kids to try new thing is not the same as forcing them into something they have communicated (verbally or non-verbally) that they do not enjoy. If a child has no interest in playing or watching sports, forcing them into sports may be setting them up to be a quitter before they even start trying new things. Michael Jordan loved the game so much that it didn’t matter that he failed to make his high school team—in fact, failure is what catapulted him towards success. His love for the game fueled his drive to be better. His failure set the stage, to not only make the team, but become the best basketball player in the history of the game. Baseball not so much.

We are so excited to be a part of the growing community of Delray Beach!” says Alison Kolander, Early Childhood Director of Divine Savior Academy.
This enthusiasm was evident at the campus’s last community event. Over 300 local families attended the school’s Touch-a-Truck event, held on March 9. “We had fire trucks, a sheriff ’s motorcycle, ambulances, a Publix semi, our landscapers and their equipment, an FPL bucket truck, and more special vehicles line up in the school’s parking lot. Children and their parents came and got to climb on the trucks, meet our local service people and business owners, and enjoy activities like face painting, Lego building, and crafts.

Everyone had a great time!”says event coordinator Lily Rowell. Parents and families also got to tour Divine Savior’s newest campus. The 44,000 square foot facility was completed this year, and it is a beautiful educational space that includes light-filled classrooms, an indoor playroom, an auditorium, and spacious grounds. As part of a multi-site school system, Divine Savior Academy in Delray Beach comes with a rich tradition of academic excellence. Its four academy campuses are part of one of the largest private school systems in the country, one that is over 150 years old. The mission of the school is to provide college-prep academics in a Christian environment through supportive teachers. Alumni of
Divine Savior’s campuses have attended Ivy League schools like Cornell and the University of Pennsylvania, as well as prominent universities like MIT, John Hopkins, and Georgetown. The school is accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year for preschool and early elementary.
“The best way to
learn more about us is to come for a private tour,”
encourages Kolander. You can schedule that tour online, as well as learn more about the school, at DivineSaviorAcademy.com.

A Parent’s Guide

to Healthy Sleep
very child needs good sleep for healthy development, growth, and learning. As parents, it’s your job to help children establish good sleep habits for a lifetime. Children learn how to sleep from their parents, so the habits you establish today can help them maintain healthy sleep not just in childhood, but for the rest of their lives. Just like babies and toddlers, school age children and teens need plenty of sleep to learn and perform their best. Sleep problems don’t stop once your children are out of the preschool stage. While establishing good sleep is important for children, parents may feel a little lost when it comes to actually teaching good sleep habits. This is particularly apparent during the challenges of newborn sleep, toddler sleep resistance, and the never ending struggle in older children between endless activities and adequate rest. Unfortunately, as school obligations, evening activities, and later bedtimes are introduced, children can often experience significant sleep challenges. School age children are spending far less time in the REM stage of sleep and that means they need to make the most of the deep sleep they’re getting each night. In this guide, parents and caregivers can learn more about helping children get healthy sleep. We share common sleep challenges for school age children and teens, along with helpful tips for making sleep better for children. Education experts say a lack of sleep is a national epidemic for children today. But they also say that adequate sleep can be a secret weapon for school success. Of course, good sleep for children has benefits beyond learning. Establishing healthy sleep habits in your child’s formative years can help them maintain good sleep through their teen years and for the rest of their lifetime.

[ COMMON SLEEP PROBLEMS ]
Nighttime
anxiety
School-age children don’t have jobs or mortgages to worry about, but they do have anxieties that can keep them up at night. They may be scared about burglars, fires, or even monsters in the closet. They may have trouble relaxing and clearing daytime troubles such as bullies, schoolwork, and relationship struggles out of their minds before falling asleep. Children may complain of a stomachache, ask for extra hugs, cry when you leave, or refuse to sleep alone. Talk out their fears with them. Encourage older children to write their anxieties out into a journal so that they don’t have to take them to bed. Items like favorite stuffed animals or even a body pillow can help children feel comforted so they can drift off to sleep.
Lack
of
day time
exercise
It’s not uncommon for school-age children to spend most of their day sitting at school and the rest on the couch watching TV or at a computer. This results in a lack of activity that can make it more difficult for children to fall asleep. “Exercise produces brain chemicals that promote sleep and relaxation,” says University of Miami associate professor of clinical pediatrics Shahriar Shahzeidi, MD.
Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking is incredibly common among school-age children. Children’s Hospital at Montefiore pediatric neurologist Karen Ballaban-Gil says between 20 to 40 percent of school age children sleepwalk. It is the result of an incomplete sleep stage transition. The body is able to move around, but the brain remains asleep. It usually happens in the first few hours after bedtime. Most children
outgrow the condition without treatment, but it’s important to be prepared. Keep floors cleared, lock bedroom windows, and install locks on front and back doors. Gently guide sleepwalking children back to bed.
Give your child a healthy sleep environment Your child’s bedroom should be quiet, dark, and cool. They need comfortable bedding and little to no distractions from sleep. That means no TV in their room.

When teens hit puberty, their circadian rhythm shifts to a later bedtime. Teens may be sleepy around 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. before puberty, but after puberty, they aren’t sleepy until 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. This sleep phase delay can make teens feel like they’re suffering from insomnia and make it difficult to get enough sleep before it’s time to wake up for school. much

time
School-age children and teens often spend a lot of time looking at screens throughout the day. In the computer lab at school, on their phones while texting, at home playing video games, watching TV, or working at a computer, they may even take mobile devices to bed. While some screen time is beneficial and essential for learning, too much can interfere with healthy sleep, especially when it occurs before sleep. The bright artificial light of screens can confuse your child’s circadian rhythm and convince their brain that it’s still daytime — awake time — when in fact they may just be a few minutes away from bedtime. Limit screen time at home, and turn off all screens at least an hour before bedtime.
Demands
on
time
For many kids, the biggest problem with sleep is there just isn’t enough time to get more than nine hours of sleep every night. They’re balancing demands on their time including early school hours, heavy homework loads, extracurricular activities, jobs, home responsibilities, and more. Parents of children who aren’t getting enough sleep should carefully examine schedules to determine if any changes can be made, including dropping unnecessary activities.

schedule
As with young children, a consistent sleep schedule is important for healthy sleep habits in school-age children and teens. Keeping a regular schedule for sleeping will help children get to sleep on time and get more restful sleep as their bodies are used to going to sleep at the same time. This can also cut down on bedtime resistance, as children know what to expect consistently every night. Your school age bedtime routine may not be as involved as it was when your child was younger, but a routine is still important. It’s also a good idea to make putting phones and devices away well before bedtime a part of your nightly routine.

If your family is often out at sporting events until well after dinner time or a parent works a late shift while children stay up to greet them when they come home, you may have challenges to solve. Take a hard look at your family’s daily routine to identify trouble spots that may be making your child’s sleep more difficult.

within reason
While children should try to maintain a regular sleep schedule every day of the week, weekends do present an opportunity to catch up on a few hours of sleep. Teens can safely add a couple extra hours of sleep on weekend mornings — but be careful not to overdo it. Sleeping in too late all can make it difficult to wake up on Monday morning. The same goes for summer and winter breaks, while children often have more time to sleep during school holidays, falling back into a strict sleep schedule when school is in session can .

Children often learn by example, especially at the school age level when they notice your actions and consequences. Be careful to get a good night’s sleep yourself so that children can follow your lead.

If your child has trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, snores regularly, or has sleep problems that interfere with normal daytime function, don’t hesitate to get help from your child’s doctor. Consider the effect of medication on sleep cycles. Some medications such as Ritalin or Adderall can cause insomnia. Talk with your doctor about using these medications and the best time for you to take them. Parents know how important sleep is for children, but children themselves may not understand. Young children in particular often don’t grasp the connection between feeling energetic and healthy and getting enough sleep. But with your help, you can educate children of all ages on how important it is to sleep well each and every night.

Introduction to Modeling Instruction A Workshop for Science Educators
TM
Led by Nationally Recognized Science Faculty “For years, leaders in the Physics Education Research community like David Hestenes, Emeritus Professor of Physics at ASU, have recognized that the traditional lecturedemonstration mode of instruction is ineffective. Students can memorize procedures to get “the right answer” only on problems exactly like those they have practiced. They flounder when they run into problems which demand a real understanding of the concepts behind the formulas. Hestenes concluded that students learn best when they are guided to construct their own understanding of the essential ideas. Working with experienced high school teacher Malcolm Wells, he helped to develop Modeling Instruction, an approach that emphasizes the construction and application of conceptual models as a way of learning and doing science.” Carlos Montero first encountered Modeling Instruction in 2006 and has been devoted to the pedagogy ever since experiencing the profound impact it had in his chemistry classes. He is an experienced AP Chemistry teacher and serves as an exam reader for the
College Board. In 2013, he was certified as a Modeling Instruction workshop leader by the American Modeling Teachers Association (AMTA) and earned the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.
“Through the Modeling Instruction teaching method, students learn science as scientists do – by doing science. It helps teachers attain knowledge, skills and experience needed to benefit students,” said Carlos Montero. Mr. Montero has been a featured presenter on several national platforms, including the Biennial Conference in Chemical Education. On June 17-21, 2019, Carlos Montero will lead a week-long workshop at Scheck Hillel Community School that is aimed at grades 6-12 science teachers from all disciplines and all schools. Introduction to Modeling InstructionTM focuses on the concept of energy as a central theme in science classes. Participants will carry out investigations to learn how Modeling Instruction works in the context of physics, chemistry, biology and middle school science.

A s s i s t i v e Tec h n o l o gy for an inclusive Classroom
O
ver the past few years, there has been a push to ensure that every student is able to participate equally in the classroom. The past assumptions that special education must be a complete separate entity from general education is fading. It is giving way to filling the desks with a rich and diverse student landscape. Studies suggest inclusion is the most effective solution to create well-rounded individuals and learning environments. This practice ensures all children are developing social skills and sound fundamentals at the same times. Inclusion goes beyond the simple “mainstreaming” illusion. Attempting to mainstream students with special needs is done with the best intentions, but often this occurs only when there is no instruction. There are a variety of assistive technologies available to supplement lessons so all students are learning and engaged. These eight devices can promote independence for students with disabilities as they adapt and interact in their environment. • Apps for tablets. Combine iPads with communication apps to allow students a variety of ways to convey their ideas with a tap of the screen. The lightweight and portability of iPads make this easy to use. • Encourage positive behavior and parental participation with computer programs. Class Dojo is a great example of what is available for educators. This program allows students to receive real-time feedback on behavior and class participation. It is also a great way to communicate with parents. • Look for co-writer word programs that are similar to autocorrect. This allows children to write and express their ideas on the computer without worrying about spelling. There are also apps for dysgraphia that allow students to snap an image of their paper and type in the answers to avoid falling behind in class. • Use hearing aid compatible headsets to allow children with hearing impairments or aids to hear audio better. • Smartpens can streamline the writing process. These writing utensils have the ability to record lectures or spoken words as you write, which allows the author to focus on writing or listening. • Slide boards or custom made supports for keyboards or tablets that steady the hands while typing or engaging on a screen without limiting the device. • Velcro tabs or small stuffed animals. Look for small handheld manipulatives that provide stimulation to help calm restless children or increase focus during lectures or quiet times. These are examples of lowtech assistive technology. • Monitoring software for Smartphones and Internet use. This is a good recommendation for parents of children with special needs who are using the Internet on a regular basis. These programs allow parents to view a child’s texts and online activity to make sure they are not being targeted by cyberbullies or predators.
The philosophy of inclusion promotes a sense of community. Children learn valuable social skills like empathy, problem solving, communication, taking turns, teamwork and more. Educators have noticed that inclusion has benefitted the entire student population—not just the ones who are being included. This process, aided with assistive technology, possesses the power to create meaningful experiences.
Many of our graduates began their educational journey at Westminster Academy in our preschool program— creating a strong foundation for them to be exceptional thinkers, learners, and leaders with a biblical and scholarly perspective for college and beyond. Christian scholarship lies at the very core of Westminster Academy and has, since its founding in 1971, been a distinctive quality that has set WA apart from all other educational opportunities in South Florida. It demands the fusion of faith and intellect as we seek to understand God’s truth in both natural and supernatural revelation— the former being found in the created order of the world around us, and the latter being found in His written Word. To learn more about all that Westminster Academy has to offer in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts, join us for a personal preview tour.
