Summer Camp Returns to Miami Seaquarium—Full of New Activities and Learning Experiences Camp Seaquarium runs from June 11, 2018 – August 18, 2018 for Ages 5 – 18

With summer vacation just a few months away, parents are looking for exciting and innovative ways to keep their children engaged in education outside the classroom. Summer Camp 2018 at Miami Seaquarium offers students from kinder¬garten to high school the opportunity to learn about animal senses and behavior, environmental issues, and the relation¬ship between humans and marine animals. Summer activities for kids will focus on educational topics according to their grade level. This year’s camp themes are “Earth Buddies,” “Ocean Explorers,” “Cold-blooded Critters,” “Aqua Powers,” “Beyond the Reef,” plus the return of “Counselor in Training (CIT) Program.” This year’s Summer Camp is full of new games, activities, and learning experiences! Register online before June 1st and get the early bird special rate of $175 per week. Or pre-register online by the Fri¬day before the beginning of each week for the special rate of $195. Miami Seaquarium is also offer¬ing an entire 5-week session for just $850, a $1,250 value (campers must register online for a full 5-week consecutive ses¬sion to receive the special pricing).

Special rates are available for annual pass holders. Special pricing at Dolphin Harbor is available for parents who wish to enroll their campers in an unforgettable Dol¬phin Interaction program. Parents who have registered campers ages 10 and up also will have the opportunity to enroll their campers in a Reef Encounter (Sea Trek). Camp hours are Monday through Fri¬day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with early and late care available starting from 8:00p.m to 5:30p.m for an additional charge. For Summer Camp enrollment or additional information, please call 305-361-5705, ext. 526 or 207 or visit www.miamiseaquarium.com/camp. Miami Seaquarium is a marine-life park, located on the beautiful Biscayne Bay in South Florida that provides visitors with a greater understanding and appreciation for marine life through shows, presentations and exhibits. As an accredited member of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums, Miami Seaquarium exceeds the standards of excellence for marine mammal care, husbandry, conservation and education. n

s birthdays and holidays roll around each year, parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles struggle with what gifts to give the children in their lives. It is no secret that the summer camp experience has many benefits for campers but there is finally research to support that claim. Over 5,000 families participated in a study supported by a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. where parents, campers, and program staff reported growth in areas such as self-confidence, independence, making friends, exploring and learning new activities, and spirituality. These are important skills that children take into adulthood. It is hard to break free from the mentality that because we have something tangible and permanent we have the best value. In reality, experiences become part of our identity. B.J. Neblett put it best when he said, “We are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences – be they positive or negative – make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow.” Giving the gift of camp is a timeless gift, and if you are the extended family or friend of the child, it is a gift that their parents will greatly appreciate. The return on this investment in our children, to learn through play and develop life skills, is priceless. It provides them with time to be physically active, gain resiliency and become more confident, develop social skills, and a relaxing environment to be themselves and make lasting friendships. According to the research of Dr. Thomas Gilovich of Cornell University, the trouble with possessions is that the happiness they provide fades quickly. “One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation,” Gilovich said, identifying what would come to be referred to as the paradox of possessions. Humans are incredibly adaptive and so new things can be exciting at first but then we adapt to them. Once we adapt, we want more and better things and this leads to comparison and envy of the things others have that we don’t. The beautiful thing about gifting camp is that there are programs with all kinds of fun for all kinds of kids. Let’s give the children in our lives a summer to remember and a gift they will cherish forever. Let’s give them the perfect gift—summer camp. n

Finding a

Healthy Balance We know that camps can provide incredible experiences, and now those experiences are expanding. With camps specializing in all sorts of interests, we are seeing a trend in camps revamping their menus to include healthier food options. Kids are constantly exploring environments where they can feel good about their accomplishments by discovering new skills, new friends, and enjoy time outdoors. At camps we feel secure that our kids are getting what they need to develop physically; however, a good camp will also encourage children to find and establish healthy lifestyles. Summer Camps are beginning to surround campers with healthier options such as salad bars and fresh fruits while also accommodating dietary restrictions for children with food allergies and diabetes, and vegetarians. Summer camps will still hold on to their tradition of s’mores, but will also offer healthier options. This is a step in the right direction and another way for children to attune with nature. n
