FROM THE EDITOR Summer 2022 is almost here! Even though we are not completely done with this pandemic, I can see the light of summer at the end of the tunnel. In this new era of education, I would like to think that there is a revolution taking place. A complete overhaul of what was no longer working that is marked by resilience and innovation to meet us where we are currently. Mentally and emotionally, our kids are tired. Kids crave and need connection, and the increase in demand we see this year for camps is because there is no better place for this connection. There is something restorative in escaping the stress of daily life to connect with friends, nature, and ourselves. If you look at the history of the summer camp movement, escaping to connect is a tale as old as time.

There is no better place for kids to foster that connection than at summer camp. I am so grateful for the extensive programs in our community. Whether your child needs rest, reflection, remediation, or reconnecting, there is a program for them right here in South Florida. Because of my own three daughters, I understand that every child’s differences make their needs unique. Some kids have thrived with virtual learning while others struggled. Some kids need to catch up this summer while some just need to catch a break. I hope that this issue you are holding right now gives you the hope and direction you need to make confident choices for your child. This community has taken uncertainty and turned it into some of the most unique opportunities for learning and having fun.

NO ONE DOES IT LIKE THE REAL FOOD ACADEMY WHY YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO SPEND AT LEAST ONE WEEK AT THE REAL FOOD ACADEMY THIS SUMMER The Real Food Academy is a unique place where your child will not only make friends and have fun but will be immersed in real foods and nutritional knowledge. Your child will leave our kitchen with the confidence and nutritional awareness that will positively influence their eating habits for life. This can be very difficult, if not impossible, for

parents to do on their own. Here is why we have succeeded where many have failed in a very important task. First and foremost, it is safe to say that there is nothing more important to parents than the health of their children. That is a fact. It is also a fact that nothing has a greater impact on your child’s health than the food they eat. When they make the right food choices (what we call “real food” at The Real Food Academy) they will feel better, sleep better, think better, look better and ultimately reduce the chances of serious illnesses. As a parent, one of the most important things you can do is instill healthy eating habits while they are young. We help cultivate this with an appreciation for real ingredients and a fun way of exposing them to new foods. Studies have shown that children that learn to prepare their own food have a tendency to skip less healthy or processed foods. By enrolling your child at the Real Food Academy, you open the door to a whole new world of nutrition education. Our kitchens are the ultimate learning labs where we engage all of their senses daily. Your child will be taught food safety and cooking techniques that will improve their math, science, literacy, and fine motor skills. Nutrition education may be incomplete without the hands-on approach and experiential learning we strive to provide at the Real Food Academy. At The Real Food Academy’s culinary camp, your child will be surrounded by other children who are his or her age. This sets the stage for a powerful phenomenon we have witnessed over the years—positive peer pressure! We all share the need to connect and kids are no different. By working together and observing each other, we have seen kids share new experiences, adopt healthy habits and attitudes, and increase

4 | summer camp fun 2022

l SUMMER CAMP FUN / 2019

their self-confidence. We see this when they get to experience the tangible results of their work. Most kids proudly exclaim, “yummy, this tastes great”! Even the pickiest eaters will open their minds, challenge their palettes, and join in with, “yeah, this IS yummy”! We foster this type of positive influence at our camps because we know kids are more vulnerable to the influence and opinions of their peers. This is almost impossible to achieve at home. Each week, under the supervision and direction of a trained chef, your child will assemble dozens of dishes from start to finish. They will have an opportunity to showcase their creativity and work with other young chefs as they learn to work as a team. Your child will create meals that look great, taste great, and more importantly, are made from the healthiest, nutrient-dense ingredients. The immediate gratification that kids experience helps boost their self-esteem and confidence. Of course, eating their creation is the best part! Kids love to show off their hard work and accomplishments. When you pick up your child each afternoon, expect them to run toward you, food in hand, beaming with pride as they share their creations with you. The Real Food Academy cooking camp promotes healthy relationships with food and confidence through self-expression. Don’t be surprised if it also ignites a life-long passion or channels purpose into a Michelin Star career. Note: When you register for camp, you will receive an email from the Real Food Academy requesting some information about your child. We have found that knowing a little bit about your child ahead of time will help us give your child the very best experience possible. For example, How old are they? Are they a picky eater? Are they painfully shy, etc.?

The History and Evolution of Summer Camps

F

or over a century, summer camps have fostered lifelong friendships and priceless experiences for kids of all ages. According to the American Camp Association, the summer camp industry today consists of nearly 4000 camps, bringing in almost $3.9 billion in revenue. The camp movement began in the 19th century but grew significantly in the 20th century. This rise in popularity is notable in books, television, and movies but are they accurate depictions of the true nature of the industry? Or does it devalue the mission of the movement as somewhere to grow and develop as a person? Summer camp is an immersive experience that builds character and instills lifelong memories and lessons. Today programs are tailored and skill-specific with numerous options available that complement traditional residential or day camps. There are themed camps, religious camps, seasonal camps, academic camps, inclusion camps--all kinds of camps for all kinds of kids. But what started the movement? In the 1880s as the Industrial Age progressed, families moved from the countryside to cities, spending more time indoors than prior generations. This new reality led to the creation of summer camps as a way to ensure boys were still learning outdoor skills and building character to become well-rounded men. The movement started as a way for them to escape to connect (or reconnect) with the outdoors. Reflecting on the role that urbanization played in changing the landscape of childhood in the late nineteenth century, summer camps were quickly seen as the saving grace of increasing urban life. City life was not meeting the needs of children and as society became more overwhelming for them, camps presented a counter-modern alternative for children to escape, immerse themselves in simpler settings, and

6 | summer camp fun 2022

connect with nature and others. The movement gained significant momentum in the 20th century, and with its rapid growth came inclusion for marginalized groups such as ethnic minorities, lower economic social classes, and girls. For girls, summer camp was an escape from modern life and a means to keep them from the corrupting nature of the surrounding culture. They emphasized what society at that time believed were the most valuable life skills for girls, namely motherhood and homemaking. The camp movement grew in popularity, but their commitment to “natural” living gradually faded, eventually starting a debate as they began to include technology. One early leader of the camp movement complained that “Every activity we can find to fit into the daily program is put in, but there is a notable lack of camping—living out in the open—the very thing that gave the movement its birth.” Many camp advocates were against civilized pursuits at camps, while others embraced the change and allowed their purpose and vision to evolve. Rather than retreating into nature to escape civilization, what if camps might become small societies of their own? A community in which children learn how to balance their needs and those of others?

Evolution The American Camping Association, the national accrediting organization for summer camps and camp professionals, traces the history of organized camps back to 1861. Frederick W. Gunn and his wife Abigail operated a home school for boys in Washington, Connecticut. In 1861, they took the whole school

on a two-week trip where the class hiked to their destination and then set up camp. The students spent their time boating, fishing, and trapping. The successful trip birthed a tradition that continued for twelve years. The Gunnery Camp is considered the first organized American camp. Then in 1876, Dr. Trimble Rothrock founded the first private camp, the North Mountain School of Physical Culture. Dr. Rothrock explained that the idea was to take “weakly boys out into camp life in the woods” as a way to combine health and learning outside usual academic lines. He believed that boys had become victims of too much mental work and too little outdoor life. His private camp offered boys a four-month stay during the summer for “rest of mind and health of body” — what many referred to as the “camp cure”. Perhaps best known as the nation’s oldest camp, Camp Dudley was founded in 1885 when Sumner F. Dudley took seven young YMCA members on a camping trip in Newburgh, New York. The mission was to develop moral, personal, physical, and leadership skills so that boys would lead lives characterized by selfless service. This would go on to become the inspiration for their motto, “The Other Fellow First”. By 1891, the camp moved to Lake Champlain, N.Y. and there were 83 campers. What was first referred to as Camp Baldhead, but better known as the Boys’ Camping Society, was eventurally renamed Camp Dudley after Dudley’s death in 1897. Though no longer officially operated by the YMCA, Camp Dudley is the longest continually operating camp in the United States. Since then, the YMCA has also grown to a network of over 2,700 locations nationwide, most of which offer summer camps.

Revolution It wasn’t until almost 30 years later in 1902 that a private-school teacher in New Hampshire founded the first bona fide camp for girls, Camp Kehonka. Laura Mattoon was a trailblazer that created opportunities for her students to engage with the natural environment in an era when society felt this experience wasn’t appropriate for girls. Breaking down the old boundaries set for women became her mission. Eleanor Eells, author of History of Organized Camping: The First 100 Years, stated that Matton: “understood the place that women were to occupy in the 20th century and that the camp experience would prepare them for it. Her ideas about camping, education, and a woman’s role were in advance of her time.” As the movement spread, 125 girls’ camps were established by 1925. Today, Wyonegonic Camp in Maine (also established in 1902) is the oldest continuously running camp for girls in the United States. Fast forward to 1906, the national organization known as the Federated Boys’ Clubs organized a seven-week summer camp which 76 boys attended. Their mission was to help young people from all backgrounds, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, reach their full potential. By 1931, the organization renamed itself Boys’ Clubs of America and more than 60 Boys’ Clubs conducted summer camps with approximately 26,088 campers attending. Then in 1990, the organization changed its charter to recognize that girls were also a part of their cause and the national organization’s name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America. As of 2010, there are over 4,000 local clubs affiliated with the national organization that serves more than 4 million boys and girls. Today, you can find clubs throughout the United States, in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and also at US military bases. Coming off the heels of the progressive era, a new era of widespread social activism and political reform was sweeping across the United States. In 1921, tucked away on beautiful Lake Lashaway in North Brookfield, Massachusetts, one of the oldest camps of its kind was

founded by Dr. William N. DeBerry. Initially called St Johns Camp, Camp Atwater was the first camp established solely for African American kids. It was designed as an escape from the stress and racism African American kids were experiencing in the city. The camp’s purpose was to provide a haven where they could make lifelong friends, have recreational opportunities, and explore their world as freely as possible while affirming their own cultural identities. Camp Atwater played an important role during the Great Migration and continues to operate today. It is owned and managed by the Urban League of Springfield and in 1982 was listed on The National Register of Historic Places. By the end of World War II, the great American tradition was taking shape. The explosive growth of summer camps in the 20th century correlates with the rise of employment among parents. Around 50 percent of mothers were stay-at-home moms in 1967, but only 23 percent stayed home by 1999 (according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics). As more parents joined the workforce, camps played a far more complex role as evidenced by the rapid growth of day camps. They became reliable care for the nation’s working parents.

Summer Camps in South Florida South Florida is a popular sub-region for summer camps likely due to the sunny weather and vast diversity. The rich history of the camp experience was essential for some of the earliest summer camps in South Florida and how they have evolved into the 21st century. Before there was Miami Country Day School, there was a camp. Although Miami Country Day is best known today as one of the best private schools in South Florida, its roots are closely entwined with the world of summer camp. In 1926, Doc Abele and L.B. Sommers took over a summer camp previously run by the YMCA which became Camp Cloudmont. They offered an eight-week experience with total immersion in nature, sports, creative activities, and the instinctual understanding of the needs and desires of a growing child. The Cloudmont campers grew up to become successful men, some gaining national prominence. Sommers and Abele decided to extend the valuable lessons taught in the camp by opening Miami Country Day School twelve years later in 1938. Now, almost a century later, Miami Country Day’s summer continues offering opportunities that include coed sports, specialty camps, travel programs, academic courses, and Day Camp. Around two years later in 1928, just west of Davie, Florida in the Everglades, the first Camp Wingmann was held. It was a week-long retreat for high school-age Episcopalians held at Moccasin Island. Camp Wingmann, named after 2 bishops of the Episcopal Diocese of South Florida, flourished for many years before hardships led to its first, but not last, change of ownership. At one point, it served for a decade as a drug rehab facility (Trout Lake Camp) before it was sold in 1998 to three alumni from the ‘60s. The three alumni had a divine mission to restore the camp to be a place for campers to encounter Christ—as was originally intended. Today, it serves as a year-round youth retreat center, the hub of youth activities for the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida, and a renowned Christian summer/winter camp. The Junior League of Miami, a group of women volunteers dedicated to community improvements, has long been involved in children’s issues, planting the seeds for many of the programs that are still present in the area today. One such program has grown into a major institution. First known as the Junior Museum of Miami it later become the Miami Museum of Science and Space Transit Planetarium. Today it is known as The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science.

The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science was founded in 1949 by the pioneer women of the Junior League of Miami who recognized the need for a science museum in South Florida. With that vision in mind, they acquired a house on Biscayne Boulevard and 26th Street in 1950, but with the institution expanding quickly, they soon outgrew that location. By 1960, the Miami Museum of Science opened its doors on three acres of the historic Vizcaya complex in Coconut Grove, its home for the next 55 years. In 1965, the museum developed an award-winning science summer camp program, which has since immersed children and teens in the marvels of science, and in turn, created landscapes for personal growth and pathways to university study. In 1966, the museum added the Space Transit Planetarium, which emerged as the leading planetarium in the world at the time, and would become the location of the internationally renowned television show “Star Gazers.” During the ensuing decades, the museum brought science to life and emerged as a leader in providing informal, hands-on science education in South Florida. As the 21st century approached, STEM education had emerged as an even more crucial pathway to prosperity. The museum, too, had grown, tripling in size since its beginnings in 1950, but Miami was growing faster. In 2009, the City of Miami agreed to lease the museum four acres in Maurice A. Ferré Park (formerly Museum Park) in downtown Miami. Phillip Frost and Patricia Frost, longtime supporters of South Florida’s arts and culture, donated $45 million to the construction of the new science museum, and The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science officially opened in May of 2017. From their former location to the new Downtown Miami campus, thousands of South Florida students have spent their summers engaged in inquiry-based science at Frost Science Camps. Today, the award-winning camp aims to prevent the summer slump in STEM, while providing a rich, hands-on experience that makes learning fun by exploring the Miami ecosystems, interacting with scientists, engaging with astronomy in the Frost Planetarium, and discovering marine biology up close and personal with the animals that call Frost Science home. Over 90% of parents say that participating in Frost Science camps not only helped their camper gain a deeper appreciation of science, but also helped them feel more confident doing science in school. Frost Science continues to exceed the expectations of campers, with new exhibitions and enrichment programs that inspire visitors to discover more about themselves and the world around them. The 1960s brought continued involvement and interest in children’s programs. Individualized camps that focused on music, theater, dance, and sports became popular, not just in South Florida, but all over the United States.

In 1959, just 230 miles south of Miami, in Havana, Cuba, was an academy that had already grown from a musical kindergarten to a school with over 450 students and an arts conservatory. The academy educated children with a unique philosophy and methodology developed and first put into practice by its founder, Conchita Espinosa. She believed that every child deserved a complete education and dreamed of a school where students would develop passion and character and where they would have the opportunity to enjoy the precious years of childhood. In 1963, when Espinosa relocated to Miami, she started over. Knowing she had a purpose in the community, she chased her dream once more. Registrations at the school surged and the school flourished. In the early 1970s, Conchita Espinosa Academy began offering summer programs that focused on both the arts and a forward-focused preparation for life through character development. In 2005, what started as a summer program evolved into three original mastery programs: Conchita Magazine, dance, and choir. Today, CEA offers over 20 mastery program classes that challenge students in 3rd through 8th grade to develop a passion and work towards mastery of subjects. Since then, Summer at CEA has evolved and flourished alongside the academy and conservatory to include two summer camp programs and three arts intensive programs in dance, music, and musical theatre. Each program is designed as a unique way for students to enrich their talents, spark creativity and wonder, and provide the time to delve deeper into their spirits. There is no doubt that the South Florida community has been shaped by Conchita’s legacy of personal, academic, and artistic excellence. Today, there are hundreds of specialized camps around the country. Camps that not only cater to kids’ individual experiences, cultures, and skills but to their specific needs as well. For seriously ill children or those with disabilities, these camps offer more than just a sense of normalcy and much-needed breaks. Studies show that participation in a pediatric summer camp has deep psychosocial benefits. One such camp with roots in South Florida started in 1990. Located in Miami’s Coconut Grove area, the Shake-A-Leg Summer Camp offers a safe outdoor experience for youth of all abilities to develop independence, confidence, and fitness through participation in sailing, water & community sports, recreation, and educational programs. With 20 sailboats, 60 kayaks, and several safety boats, Shake-A-Leg serves over 8,800 people annually and aims to become the premier global community for people with disabilities, their families, and members of all ages and abilities to have fun, be inspired, develop friendships, and launch dreams. Understanding the rich history of the summer camp experience is essential to its success in the future. Summer enrichment programs have evolved beyond what early advocates could have ever imagined, but their history of escaping daily pressures to a more authentic setting—all in the name of deep connection—is still relevant today. Camps today are tailored to meet kids where they are at, they provide personalized experiences with individualized approaches that foster community, collaboration, and connection—be it with nature, their peers, or even themselves. Few other places offer children unadulterated fun while also fostering timeless values. “Camp is one of the few institutions where young people can experience and satisfy their need for physical activity, creative expression and true participation in a community environment,” says Peter Scales, Ph.D., a senior fellow with the Search Institute in Minneapolis. The educator, author, and psychologist believes that not even most schools satisfy all those needs. One thing is certain today—the camp experience has never been better. ▪

Sparking Creativity Summer programs at Conchita Espinosa Academy (CEA) and Conservatory of the Arts (CEC) are designed for students to develop and enrich their talents, spark creativity and wonder, and provide the time to delve deeper into their spirits. Whether in summer camp or arts intensives, there are options for students to dive into a variety of different interests.

Summer at CEA offers families summer camp options aimed to spark the curiosity and joy of students and keep them engaged through dynamic activities. Adventures in the Arts (PK-4 through third grade), is designed for campers to use the different avenues of the arts and sports as channels to build life experiences. Through music, sports, movement, and visual arts, children learn life skills and develop social and emotional skills that allow them to incorporate creativity, emotion, innovation, and integrity into their daily lives. Cougar Strong (fourth through eighth grade), is dedicated to creating authentic and meaningful experiences that are as immersive and enriching as

they are fun. Campers participate in a well-rounded mix of classes that include technology, athletics, and hands-on experiences, such as Maker Movement, which is a unique combination of artistry, circuitry, and old-fashioned craftsmanship. Whether learning to code, creating their own video games to share with an international community, training for an obstacle course, or cooking, Cougar Strong campers are always on the go. These hands-on experiences allow students to create solutions to everyday issues, works of art, and useful inventions. By seeing their projects to fruition, campers experience their creations come to life and witness their own growth over the course of the six weeks, instilling a sense of confidence and pride in their own capabilities.

summer camp fun | 19

In both Adventures in the Arts and Cougar Strong, students participate in daily math and reading reinforcement within a relaxed setting that allows them to put their learning into context, while continuing to develop their skills in these areas in preparation for the school year ahead. Students also participate in campwide field trips and activities, such as water day, Copa Conchita Soccer Tournament, and color wars, among others, which create memorable moments and develop lasting friendships.

Summer of the Arts |

Summer of the Arts Intensives offer young artists with a serious interest in dance, music, or theatre the opportunity to become immersed in their area of concentration, giving them the time and the space to expand their knowledge and grow within their discipline of choice. Summer of the Arts intensives are by invitation or audition only for students entering 3rd grade and above All intensive programs are led by expert teachers in their respective fields, who keep each child’s capabilities, development, and social and emotional well-being at the forefront.

Dance and Spanish Dance |

CEC Dance Intensive is designed to strengthen students’ dance technique, artistry, and creative capabilities, as they challenge themselves to think outside the box through a summer-long project integrating different forms of dance. Dancers are placed according to age and level, and participate in a variety of different dance, choreography, and performance-related classes, such as ballet, contemporary, jazz, and Spanish dance technique classes, including Spanish dance work with castanets, fans, bata de cola (depending on age), and mantón (shawl).

Musical Theatre |

The summer Musical Theatre Intensive introduces students interested in theatre and voice to the wonderful world of Broadway and Broadway-style musicals. Students participate in a number of technique classes, including acting, improvisation, voice, movement, and tech work. The Musical Theatre Intensive is designed to give students an overall perspective on being a well-rounded and complete performance artist and allow them the space to play and discover talents they may not even know they had!

Students in the Music Intensive are challenged and inspired to grow in their love for music and mastery of their musical instrument. Students work with the music faculty both privately and in a group setting, play and perform in an ensemble, further develop their sight-reading, try new musical instruments, and incorporate music theory and history into their studies. Students in the Music and Musical Theatre Intensives collaborate on an endof-summer performance where they perform scenes and songs from Broadway and Broadway-style musicals. Whether your child is a young artist in training or you are simply looking for an enriching and engaging summer experience, there are numerous options to explore at Conchita Espinosa Academy and Conservatory of the Arts. At CEA and CEC, students are offered a safe, nurturing, and age-appropriate environment where they will spend their summer discovering new ideas, cultivating talents, and making lifelong memories.
