FROM THE EDITOR
T
hank you. That is truly the only way to conclude another year together on this journey to a better future. Let’s talk about the direction of Private Schools Guide. You may have noticed we are revamping our magazine and website as we strive to make relevant information more readily available for our readers. Just like most of the distinguished schools you will find inside this issue and issues past, we are on a path to simply be better! This year’s focus has been listening. Listening to what parents and readers want to see, listening and aligning to the direction private schools are headed and listening to what our children need, making sure we bring those three areas together in every single issue. Created with your input and feedback, we redesigned our directory, where we introduced
simpler-to-navigate categories for parents. These categories are easy to interpret and easy to follow, allowing readers to sort through the extraordinary schools in our community based on what fits their needs best. As parents, you face enough complexity in choosing the right education for your family so we have introduced a new Open House Calendar. With dates, emails and phone numbers in one place, you can take the next step of the decision-making process right then and there. Though our guides may be new, our promise is unchanging. To our readers, our promise is to do everything we can to give you reliable information in a simple, clear and concise manner. To our schools, our promise is to do everything we can to promote the extraordinary programs you run, without sacrificing the principles you reflect that sets you apart. Lastly, to our children, our promise is to never stop learning or growing, just as we expect you to never stop doing, so we can provide you with smart choices to change the world. Happy Holidays and see you in 2019!

Divine Savior Academy celebrates

D
ivine Savior Academy celebrated the grand opening of its newest campus in Delray Beach, Florida on Sunday, September 23. A ribbon cutting took place at4pm in the school’s entryway, followed by an open house for the community of Delray Beach. President of Somerville Architects Mike Kadow, Chief Executive Officer of Burke Construction Tony Burke, Executive Director of the WELS Church Extension Fund Scott Page, President of Divine Savior Ministries Carlos Leyrer, as well as Divine Savior Governing Board members and officers, Divine Savior Academy and Church administration, faculty, staff, and families of Divine Savior attended the much-anticipated event. DSA’s network is part of one of the largest private school systems in the United States, one that has operated highly-regarded schools for over 150 years. Divine Savior’s mission is to provide college-prep academics, supportive teachers, and a Christian environment to share Christ’s love with students and their families. Working as a multi-site system has allowed Divine Savior to develop excellence in systems, curriculum, and teacher training and development in order to support their schools in its mission. As a result, graduates of Divine Savior Academy have been accepted to Ivy League schools like Cornell, Brown, and UPENN, as well as prestigious colleges like MIT, the University of Miami, and Georgetown. Divine Savior’s campus in Delray Beach will serve students in preschool (three- and four-year-olds) and elementary school. The campus itself has 41,600 square feet of educational space on 10 acres of land. The Academy’s new, modern building features a library-media center, an auditorium with a performance stage, and an indoor play area in addition to large, light-filled classrooms. The grounds include a playground, convenient parking, and a future recreational field.

Helping Your Child Cope with Test Anxiety By: Grettel Mar tinez, PsyD, Healthy Minds Psychology and Eva Benmeleh, PhD, My Treetop Center
C
hildren who suffer from test anxiety may exhibit some of the following symptoms: catastrophic, insecure, and self-sabotaging thoughts, difficulty sleeping, not feeling good enough, overstudying, comparing themselves to their peers, isolating themselves from friends and family, suffering from bodily symptoms (i.e., headaches, stomachaches, nausea), complaining of loss of concentration, and school refusal. How parents can help: Test anxiety may be a sign of other underlying issues like learning disabilities, ADHD, and generalized anxiety. 1. A thorough psychoeducational evaluation can help tease out what the core issue is and offer specific recommendations to help your child succeed, including accommodations for exams. 2. When your child is struggling, you may ask yourself, “How important are these grades to me?” What expectations is your child trying to meet through grades? 3. Try to focus conversations about your child and limit talking about how others are doing, to help minimize comparisons and competition. 4. Help your child with organization and problem-solving strategies by taking meaningful breaks, practicing deep breathing, and using other tools to organize their materials. 5. Help your child create a schedule that works for them. 6. Other useful tools for reviewing material before a test include: guessing questions, flashcards, and tutoring. 7. A trained psychologist may assist your child on rewiring negative thought patterns and increasing self-confidence and flexibility with cognitive behavioral therapy. 8. A trained psychologist can also help them find individualized tools to help your child cope with the stress. 9. Slow down, but don’t forgo exercise and healthy eating. 10. Consider limiting extra-curricular activities to focus more on relaxation.

Early Signs of
Dyslexia
By: Jennifer C. Roig M.Ed.
P
reschoolers can show early warning signs of dyslexia long before they start reading. That is because dyslexia affects a variety of language skills that are the building blocks for reading. What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is a general term used to describe disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read, write, or interpret words, letters, and other symbols. But, dyslexia does not affect general intelligence. There are three types of dyslexia: visual, auditory, and expressive writing. It is possible for your child to have any or all of these types of dyslexia.
How common is dyslexia? According to Dyslexia Help, dyslexia is thought to be one of the most common language-based learning disabilities.70-80% of people with reading difficulties are likely to have some form of dyslexia. In fact, between 5-10% of the population has dyslexia. But, this number can also be as high as 17%. Once again, it is important to remember that dyslexia occurs in children with all intelligence levels.
Jennifer C. Roig holds an M.Ed. in Emotional Behavioral Disorders and Learning Disabilities. She is the founder and Head of School at Roig Academy in Miami, Florida

Signs of dyslexia in preschool
Here are some signs of dyslexia in preschool, according to Understood.org: • Often mispronounces words, such as saying “beddy tear” such as “teddy bear.” •His or her doctor considered him to be a “late talker.” He or she has said a few words by their second birthday and has trouble saying words accurately (using “baby talk”). • Often has difficulties naming familiar objects and learning new words.
• Often tells stories that are difficult to follow; has trouble talking about events in chronological order • Has trouble remembering and following directions with multiple steps. Early identification and intervention. According to a study by the University of California, Davis, and Yale University, identifying children with dyslexia as early as first grade could narrow or even close the achievement gap with typical readers. The data indicates that it is no longer acceptable to wait until a child is in third grade or later to before making efforts to identify or address dyslexia. With early intervention being critical for your child, getting help may seem a little overwhelming. But, finding support for your child and family is easier than you think. At The Roig Academy, we are welcoming, open, honest, and focus on highlighting a child’s strengths. We pride ourselves in nurturing a learning community that embraces the individual needs for all of our students.

Caring Coins
is Caring for Haiti
t. Thomas Episcopal Parish School’s Outreach Gives from the Heart - Global citizenship is among the core val-
ues taught at St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School. The entire school community enthusiastically supports several outreach programs throughout the year. The Caring Coins Drive, just underway, supports an orphanage in Haiti called Zamni Beni, which means Blessed Friends in Haitian Creole. Since 2012, St. Thomas has continued their support of this initiative. Through the sole efforts of their students, in all grades, earning coins by performing various tasks around their homes, opening lemonade stands, washing cars, and sharing their allowances, the school has provided year-round support for two children, Sammy and Mika, who reside at Zamni Beni. These two orphans were abandoned on the steps of a church in Haiti and were taken to Zamni Beni, home to more than 60 children. St. Thomas’ students “befriended” Sammy when he was a year old by raising funds to cover the cost of his care for one year. Sammy is now eight years old. This past year, students were able to sponsor a second child, Mika. Thanks to the generosity of these students, funds raised by St. Thomas’ students allow Zamni Beni to provide a loving environment for Sammy and Mika to grow and flourish. Head of School Mrs. Lillian Issa said, “The Caring Coins drive is a wonderful way to start our school year by our recognizing those who are less fortunate than ourselves, for in so doing, we are providing our assistance to the ongoing needs of our global community.”

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT
By Vanessa Donaher
C
Current School Not Working?
hoosing the school that is best for your child is one of the most important decisions we make as parents. School becomes a family’s second home. Find the right fit by prioritizing your child’s needs. A school’s approach to learning should focus on the individual child.
AEF Schools offer an alternative for children and families whose needs are not being met by traditional public schools or mainstream services.
At Scheck Hillel Community School, from early childhood through high school, we tailor education for a personalized college preparatory experience. We create opportunities for students to maximize achievement, foster identity and explore their passions through a rigorous academic program, comprehensive co-curricular offerings and a nurturing community.
Looking for a better alternative?
We do this by uniquely inspiring students to ask themselves, “Who do I want to be?” rather than, “What do I want to do?” This shift empowers students to become reflective global citizens with enduring Jewish identity and values, ready and eager to write the next chapter through their own definitions of success, happiness and fulfillment. This philosophy reinforces the importance of finding the right fit for your child. Scheck Hillel invests in preparing our graduates to compete in the most prestigious colleges and universities and, at the same time, shine as exemplary people guided by core values. While we applaud our students for excelling academically, we also celebrate when they achieve by making the world a better place through service and leadership.
“Success is measured ONE child at a time” Curriculum includes Language Arts, IT, Math, Fine Arts, PE, Attention,Friendship Organizational, and Decision Making Skills
SACS/CASI Accredited Accepting McKay, Step-up and Gardiner Small Class Sizes No FCAT/FSA Grades K-12th Transportation Provided
