Extending our Neighbourly Welcome to Migrant Workers he former school building at 60 Dunearn Road has a special place in the heart of the SCGS family - our Primary Division occupied the site with its lovely and rustic surroundings for two years while the School Building Project was ongoing. When we moved back to the main campus in 2020, we were glad to learn that the site would be put into good use again, this time as a
temporary dormitory for migrant workers in light of the pandemic. As a goodwill gesture to welcome our neighbours, the SCGS family, working together with our ever supportive Parent Support Group, put together hampers and snacks for the occupants as well as artwork to beautify the buildings. We were glad to be able to extend our welcome to our neighbours!

Reaching Out to Primary Students during the Pandemic ONLINE TUITION PROGRAMME WITH XISHAN PRIMARY SCHOOL uring the May holidays, 16 Secondary 4 students and 2 D Secondary 3 students volunteered to mentor 8 students from Xishan Primary School in the school’s online befriending
My Feelings About the Programme I feel that the tuition programme was a meaningful and engaging way of using my knowledge and skills to give back to society. I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with my tutee as she was very responsive and eager to learn. This also benefitted me in terms of empathy and resourcefulness, as I learnt to put myself in the shoes of a Primary 4 student, and to think of innovative ways to craft the lesson plan in such a way that it was suitable for a Primary 4 student. Moreover, having to conduct a tuition programme over video conferencing was definitely something unique. This allowed me to think out of the box, to ensure that the lesson was interesting and beneficial without the need for physical interaction, through the use of various technological means such as online Mathematics games, screen sharing while attempting questions, and stepby-step arts and crafts tutorial for Mothers’ Day. Hence, this tuition programme was indeed an eye-opener for me and I enjoyed it very much.
and tuition programme. In pairs, they conducted 2 hours of online sessions each week which focussed on tuition or enrichment activities like craft work. They also contacted their Primary School charges daily to check on their well-being.
REFLECTIONS BY CLARIANNE EFFENDI (SEC 4SY) Motivation for Signing Up for the Programme When my class representative forwarded my classmates and I information on the various Values in Action (VIA) opportunities, the first thought that came to my mind was that it was the perfect time to volunteer and serve the community as it was then the school holidays and circuit breaker period. The Xishan Primary School tuition programme stood out from the rest. Personally, I truly find joy in interacting with young children. Moreover, I have always enjoyed teaching others, as I believe that knowledge acquired should be shared and not be kept to oneself. Hence, when I saw this programme being offered, I immediately knew that it was the programme I should sign up for. Of course teaching someone whom I did not know initially could possibly be daunting, but hearing that I could pair up with my schoolmate and tutor together was very comforting indeed. I believed that with teamwork, my tutor partner and I would be able to plan an engaging and comprehensible lesson plan for my Primary 4 tutee and, true enough, we had so much fun running this programme in just a short span of time during the May holidays! This was my main motivation in joining the Xishan Primary School tutoring programme and I am truly grateful that I chose to embark on this journey. It can easily be said to be the most meaningful and enjoyable VIA I have ever participated in!
Challenges That I Faced Along the way, my tutor partner and I faced several challenges, such as communication issues. For example, it was rather challenging to teach our tutee arts and crafts due to the fact that we were not physically present to help her with the procedure. However, we managed to think of inventive ways, such as using shapes to describe each step. Another significant challenge was trying to get our tutee to have sustained attention for a long span of 2 hours. As young children are often very active, they tend to be distracted very easily. To overcome this challenge, we would have a competition with our tutee. For example, we would say “for the next science question, let’s see who can read the question the fastest and answer it!” Our tutee would immediately stay still and focus on the question, and would exclaim “I’m done!” in the hope of winning the “minireading competition”. Hence, we constantly try to find innovative ways to tackle the challenges that we faced along the way and to make our activities engaging and comprehensible to a Primary 4 student.

Am I Inspired by This Programme? This programme has undoubtedly inspired me. Before encountering this programme, I had never considered tutoring as a way for me to serve the community, let alone tutoring via video conferencing. This has inspired me to think of various means to give back to society, and to constantly seek ways to use my skills to benefit the community. I had always thought that such tutoring programmes were only suitable for adults as they would be the most experienced and knowledgeable in their respective fields. The fact that I became a tutor myself—I must admit that it was a significant feat! Not only am I inspired by this programme, I have also developed a greater appreciation for and gratitude to those in the teaching profession, who have guided us in our education journey. The amount of hard work put into planning and conducting a lesson is tremendous, and truly deserves respect. This programme is indeed an eye-opening one, and I am grateful for this opportunity to give back to the community through tutoring the younger generation.
REFLECTIONS BY ISABEL HIKARU YAMADA (SEC 4SY) Motivation for Signing Up for the Programme I was motivated to sign up because I felt that the circuit breaker limited the social interaction I could have with my friends. I was yearning to connect with the society and the community around me more, so I felt that this was a great opportunity to get in touch with the outside world, beyond the comfort of my own home. Furthermore, with more time in my hands, I wanted to invest it in something meaningful and infuse acts of service and kindness into this holiday period. My Feelings About the Programme Personally, I looked forward to the tuition sessions as much as my tutee did, especially during this circuit-breaker period, with everyone cooped up within his or her home. To be able to interact with her over the computer screen was a very refreshing experience! Furthermore, I have limited experience communicating and working with friends who are much younger than I am, and with friends from other schools, so, to me, my tutee was my new companion. Her positivity is also extremely infectious, so when I saw her through video conferencing every week, her joy also fuelled my joy! What is really inspiring about her is that she possesses a hunger and enthusiasm for learning, qualities which I have come to neglect over the years. Tutoring her gave me the chance to reignite my passion for learning and learn alongside her. I am so blessed to have been given this opportunity to tutor her! I would not have thought that I would be able to help someone, let alone make a friend, over the circuit breaker period and I genuinely hope that we can bring out the best in all of us, including my tutee. Through raising local examples of endangered wildlife as case studies, hosting an interactive sharing session on the subject as well as an exciting Kahoot! game and origami session, we were able to shed more light on the causes and impact of more wildlife becoming endangered and extinct. At the same time, students learnt ways in which they could contribute to combat the issue at hand.
his year, despite many restrictions brought by COVID-19, 3SY and 3SE managed to continue to take part in many Values-In-Action (VIA) activities, most of which took place in the comfort of our own homes. We participated in these activities as we felt the need to lend a helping hand to those who were vulnerable during this special period. The May Holidays made it possible for us to take time off of our hectic school schedules to spread positivity and love to those around us.
T
Although we initially struggled as we planned how to engage the primary schoolers over a platform we ourselves were not familiar with, this VIA truly allowed us to better connect and empathise with the primary school students. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to reach out and do good to others even during these trying times of COVID-19.
3SY collaborated with Filos Community Services (a nonprofit organisation management) where we interacted with children over zoom calls by playing Kahoot and folding origami with them. During the activities, many of us felt very fulfilled and happy when we saw the smiles on their faces while playing the games that we have created, allowing us to bond closer as a class and give back to the community at the same time.
Nicole Tedja (Sec 2SY) & Haley Lai (Sec 2PE)
As many completed their VIA individually, 3SE managed to reach out to provide care to a wider range of people. Some examples include tutoring primary school students, teaching elderlies new technological skills, and reaching out to other non-profit organisations. Through these activities, many of us have learnt to become more patient and empathetic towards others. Overall, we are very grateful for having the opportunity to give back to the society in our own ways. Liow Zi Hui, Jolin (Sec 3SE) and Kim SooAhn (Sec 3SY)

INTERACTING WITH SENIORS AT YONG EN ACTIVE HUB During the May holidays, a group of us from different classes participated in an online Values-In-Action (VIA) programme with a group of seniors from Yong En Active Hub. at a level that allows them to complete without assistance. During the two sessions that we facilitated, we led the seniors in stretching exercises that promote flexibility and mobility, engaged them in games like Bingo and Scattergories, folded origami and performed a scaled-down magic show. For the group of us who volunteered to contribute to Yong En's online programme, we believe that this VIA was a fulfilling and fruitful one. The seniors participated enthusiastically in the games and enjoyed folding origami. It was also rewarding and we learnt a lot more about teamwork and how to carry out our plans independently. This experience is definitely one not to be forgotten!
During the initial phase of the VIA, we were split up into several groups to plan a variety of activities for the seniors. We had to think of activities that would be suitable and safe for them. Students were given the opportunity to learn more about the impact the outbreak of the virus has had on Singapore and then brainstormed ideas as to how the pillars of defence can help alleviate fears of the virus and safeguard our citizens from threats that the virus poses to our nation. This allowed the students to understand how Total Defence plays an important role in Singapore society and how the pillars of defence can be applied to very current and

For the Primary Division, the students explored examples of friendship among people and countries standing in solidarity to overcome the global COVID-19 crisis. The different levels then further unpacked concepts of friendship and demonstrated acts of friendship based on the following focuses – P1 & P2: Being a good friend; P3 & P4: Learning about the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and appreciating cultural diversity; P5 & P6: Friendship between nations and appreciating foreign workers in our midst. For the Secondary Division, this year’s lesson explored how country leaders overcome borders in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic. IP Arts Elective SECONDARY DIVISION Secondary 1 - All that Jazz All that Jazz was an arts module designed especially for the Secondary 1 IP students. What initially was a module taught by external arts vendors had to be re-imagined in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence the rebirth of the module to one taught in-house with live-streamed sessions with local jazz musicians.
Student Reflection When I was first handed the medium-sized brown box containing the cyanotype printing materials, I opened it to reveal bottles of strange-looking liquid. I was amazed to find out that cyan-blue prints would be produced when these chemicals are exposed to sunlight or UV light. I had never thought about the confluence of art and science in the creation of beautiful bright blue prints. This made me realise that art is so much more than just putting pen to paper and that there is science behind the art form too!
The objective was for students to have the chance to explore this creative and inclusive world of jazz and its various sounds, to be able to articulate their thoughts about the music, as well as to participate in it through music-making.
This module broadened my knowledge about the history of photography. Up till the 20th century, engineers used cyanotype printing to produce copies of drawings, referred to as blueprints, and for photographers to capture images.
Students not only jammed to tunes by Duke Ellington, they shimmied to Erskine Hawkins’ Tuxedo Junction, and moaned and groaned about life by penning their own Blues poems. They also created art inspired by Henri Matisse and had a chance to interact with local jazz musicians like Greg Lyons and Tony Makarome via Zoom and did some ‘musicking’ face-to-face with Aya Sekine.
Every print I made was unique. Seeing the pale yellow liquid slowly turn into rich cyan blue in the sunlight never ceased to amaze me. I am extremely grateful to have had the chance to learn about cyanography.
Secondary 2 - Cyanotype Printing Cyanotype printing also known as sun printing is one of the earliest ways of creating an image with light. In this module, students experimented ways to ‘paint with light’ and learnt how to composite images through techniques such as layering, eliminating, exaggerating, and playing with negative/positive spaces.
