Büro Schätz is an interdisciplinary studio for architecture, design, research and urban planning founded by Florian Schätz. At the interface of design, architecture and construction, each project is characterized by meticulous preparation from the first idea to the built detail. The spectrum of work ranges from the design to the realization of high-end private houses to cultural buildings, hotels, industrial plants and urban development master plans. The studio also provides feasibility studies, inventories and visualizations. As part of the design process, a dynamic, international team of architects, engineers and designers research an new innovative ideas, construction methods and modular building structures. Florian Schätz graduated from ETH Zurich and taught for twelve years at the National University of Singapore. He has been awarded with the Hong Kong Design Award, the President Design Award Singapore and the A 'Design Award Milano. His projects have been shown at venues such as the Architecture Biennale in Venice, the Cite de l'Architecture Paris, the National Design Center in Singapore, Adelaide, Berlin and Vienna. Parts of the work are part of the collection of the Asian Cultural Center in Korea.
büro Schätz is an office for architectural design, that works internationally with flexibility, efficiency and care in the crafting of high quality architectural products. The studio’s unique, versatile and novel approach to small, medium and large scale projects and its ingenuity in adaptive reuse of existing buildings attracts both recognition and bluechip clients globally. Combining art and construction with German pragmatism and East-Asian lifestyle, Büro Schätz was founded by Florian Schätz. The German-born architect studied at the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland, and gained global experience working for a Pritzker Prize winning architect Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam. His architecture, curatorial and design work has been awarded with the European Architectural Photography Prize, the Hong Kong Asia Design Award, the Singapore President Design Award and became part of the permanent collection of the Asian Cultural Centre in South Korea.
Florian Schätz expresses architecture through structure and constructs space centred around liveability. He connects programs to structural form and combines function with a new mode of lifestyle living. With his office he creates new opportunities in spaces adapting modern living, sharing culture and co-working. In fast growing South-East Asia, their focus is on tropical resort architecture, modular envelopes and high density urbanism. “Inspiration comes from seeing and observing. Each design is a collage of impressions, places and phenomena,” says Schätz, “I borrow light and shadow; the golden shimmering in a dim light, the roughness of old industrial plants, the smell of wood in Kyoto, the empty sharpness in Edward Hopper’s painting, the fading away of the chanting in the monastery at Le Thoronet. Impressions are distilled and become the presence of a room through diminution. Creative impulses often result from conversations with incidental contacts, clients, students”
Emerging Asian Cities, says Schätz, are todays equivalent to the American Cities in the last century, attracting a vast number of people and spearheading new technology. His analysis of urban dwelling, shown as the “8 points of the compact city” at the Cite de l’Architecture in Paris in 2015 led his office to develop a potential architectural response to the explosive building growth in the region. Massive urbanisation requires innovation in material technologies and the building industry. His research is on vertical modular structures and 3D printing of tropical facades. “Like sociological micro power plants, buildings are becoming 24/7 instruments for culture, employment and living,” says Schätz. “This leads to a flexible mix of programs, uses and technologies. We design buildings as urban resorts that integrate work, facilities and lifestyle and we want to enhance the values of our urban life.” from ”Designscapes” by Beyond Black beyondblack.org

Skyhive provides the vision of future construction methods for the emerging Asian cities. The innovation is in printing complex formwork to cast concrete. With this in mind, the Studio is exploring challenging new territories of a structure that, besides program and function, becomes the primary framework for a New Tropical Architecture. Repetitive modular prefab elements define new forms of tectonic, ornament and pattern and become applied in different scales to form the internal division walls.

The obsolete, uneconomic and pedagogically deficient building is undergoing an energetically refurbishment. The Caritas Kindergarten St. Konrad was built in 1962 and receives as addition, a nursery school in lightweight timber construction. Designed under the guidelines of childcare centers the educational institution is maximized with four group rooms in the facility. The kindergarten now can house up to 75 kids. Two smaller group and napping rooms take care of 17 toddlers.

The new addition articulates with a pitched roof the long narrow volume on the Western side of the facility. Separated from the main building with a spacious central playing corridor, it makes washrooms, play area, wardrobes and waiting lounge much more accessible. Visitors access the facility from the Northern car park through a common verandah, lobby and baby stroller parking area barrier-free. The basement holds a gymnastic hall, storage and M&E facilities as well as granting access to the playground and garden. FACE| bßro Florian Schätz, Kindergarten St Konrad

Residential Refurbishment Three Generationen House im Lower Bavaria Germany
FACE| büro Florian Schätz , Haus ToCo
The childhood home of the owner – a typical 1970s German house – had to be turned into a space where three generations could live together. After her husband died, the grandmother wanted to downsize her space while staying close to her family. Moving in together was the best decision for everyone. Rising building cost for the implementation of the new Energy Conservation Regulation has led to the renovation and modernization of existing single-family houses in a three-generation home. Built in 1975, the alteration of this project provides a gym, SPA and office area, whereby kitchen, dining and living become one universal space.

Mass-produced modular blocks can take over construction loads, permit cross ventilation and protect the building's interior from intense tropical rainfall. Ventilation blocks, as modular-building systems, using carefully executed designs, create richly ornamented sculptural facades. 1000 Singapore addresses the eight principles of the compact city: density, territories, nature, infrastructure, urban strategies, politics, economics and architecture, and demonstrates how compact cities can shape urban planning in the future to make compact cities more livable, greener and more energy efficient. As we move towards accommodating 6 million people across Singapore by 2050, it is important we have all of the supporting planning frameworks in place. The development of low-carbon liveable neighbourhoods will be essential, and these are shaped by carefully composed good design, supported by a network of interconnected, pedestrian-friendly streets, and linked with high-quality public open spaces.

The comparison of Singapore and Paris represent two different models of high density. The very well-curated work dissects, examines and communicates in an excellent and accurate way the core principles of complexity, diversity and liveability and proposes an efficient, compact and sustainable urban model of the future. This city of the future includes economic viability, quality of life and social equality. Graphs, drawings, photographs, and architectural models will discuss land-intensive agriculture, planning strategies, urban governance and the export of a city planning model. A comparison of Low-High rise cities focuses on Singapore as a city-state in relation with Paris as a metropolis. FACE| bßro Florian Schätz, 1000 Singapores, Paris
