Bassettโ€™s Market going green BY JOHN SCHAFFNER For most of the last 40 years, the โ€œBassettโ€™s Flyerโ€ has been an advertising staple in Ottawa County. However, for owner Mike Bassett, the marketing environment has changed, as he is announcing today his decision to take his advertising โ€œgreen.โ€ โ€œWe have been printing 2,860,000 pages of advertising per year,โ€ Bassett said. โ€œThatโ€™s 8.94 tons of paper and ink. We donโ€™t want to do that anymore.โ€ Bassett, a third generation grocery retailer whose store has been in existence in Ottawa County since 1898, announced he will partner with The Beacon, Ottawa Countyโ€™s largest newspaper in terms of circulation and readership. Bassettโ€™s weekly specials will be printed in a special two-page advertising section of The Beacon each week effective immediately. The weekly ad flyer will still be available in the store. โ€œWe have always put our customers first, and we believe this is the best and most efficient way to communicate with our customers.โ€ He added, โ€œThink of how many trees we will save this way. By advertising in The Beacon each week, we can eliminate millions of copies of our weekly flyer from ending up in the landfill.โ€ He also noted that Bassettโ€™s Market has been getting excellent results from their weekly full-page ad running in The Beacon the last several years. Bassett just returned from a large grocery conference and convention in Las Vegas. What he learned there reinforced his plans to expand on his online capabilities. His weekly ad will be online at both www.thebeacon.net and at www.bassettsmarket.com. In

Outage workers prepare to load fuel into Davis-Besse reactor during the last outage in December 2007.

Refueling the local economy Davis-Besse shutdown means jump-start for restaurants, hotels BY ANGIE ADAIR Editor The reactor at Davis-Besse will get a break starting next week but the break is over for many local businesses. The nuclear power station will shut down Feb. 28 for a refueling and maintenance outage. During this time, about 1,300 contractors and FirstEnergy employees come to town to help. Each of these workers need a place to sleep, eat and relax during their stay giving a much-needed boost to the offseason economy. โ€œWe are seeing a whole truckload of business,โ€ said Mike Snider, vice president of rental operations for Lake Erie Vacation

Bill Kreinbihl of Davis-Besseโ€™s engineering department works on a cable replacement project during the plantโ€™s last outage in December 2007.

โ€œEstimates indicate that each outage boosts the local economy by about $3 million ...โ€ TIM SCHNEIDER n FirstEnergy spokesman Rentals Inc. The plant shuts down once every two years and each time the influx of visitors is a boon for local businesses. Snider says Lake Erie Vacation Rentals started taking calls for the outage last June and the condos have been full for the past few weeks. Angela Long, general manager at Fairfield Inn, said that hotel has long-term stays booked from now until the beginning of April.

โ€œWe just reopened the Sleep Inn across the street for the overflow,โ€ she said. โ€œI have to hire more people.โ€ Local restaurants are taking advantage too. Snider said reps from Kokomo Bay and pizza places were stopping in to drop off menus for the visitors and when he went to Nickโ€™s Road House for a burger, he had to fight for a table.

If you think there were and are a lot of cars in the local hotel parking lots, you are absolutely correct! Roughly 120 bowlers are participating in the State Elks Bowling Tournament each weekend through March at Harbor Lanes. Also, a large number of nuclear engineers have invaded, as they do every two years, for the Davis Besse refueling process that also lasts through March.
