RESTAURANT DESTROYED The state fire marshal is investigating the fire that destroyed Port-nStarboard Restaurant Saturday night. Firefighters were at the eatery — which was closed when the fire broke out shortly after 5 p.m. — for more than eight hours battling the blaze. Firefighters from Port Clinton Fire Department were joined by crews from Bay Township, Catawba, Erie Township and Lakeside. No one was injured.

Sound Off Sportsmanship

Saturday some family and I made the trip to Bowling Green to watch Port Clinton play Celina for the regional title and was thoroughly impressed by the level of sportsmanship displayed by the players, unfortunately I can not say the same of the fans.

During the pre-game warm-up the Port Clinton team stepped onto the court to thunderous applause. However, the Bulldogs entered to thunderous “BOO’S,” and it wasn’t just from the student section but from the majority of the Skins fans. I don’t get the opportunity to go to many games so I don’t know if this is a regular occurrence but I hope that it is not. I can understand “booing” a public official that you disagree with but to treat a high school basketball team, who has done nothing but be the best in their district, with such disrespect is inexcusable and sets an awful example for all the school children in attendance.

I wish the players the best of luck as they play in Columbus this week and I hope the fans represent our community in an honorable fashion.

Churches come together for Good Friday service

ODNR funding local boat ramp project COLUMBUS — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Watercraft, will provide more than $376,000 for urgent boat launch facility repairs and maintenance at 34 sites statewide this spring, following recent approval from the State Controlling Board.

East Harbor State Park is getting $6,700 of that for replacement of the campground boat ramp dock.

Funding is provided through the state’s Waterways Safety Fund, which consists of monies paid by boaters for watercraft registration and titling fees, a share of the state motor fuels tax and funding from the U.S. Coast Guard.

A total of 34 projects, each ranging in cost from $381 to $20,000, will be completed

by June 30, including 25 boat launch access sites within Ohio’s state parks. A listing of the approved project expenditures is available online at http://ohiodnr.com/

ORSI gets $3K from OSS Solid Waste District Ottawa Residential Services Inc. received $3,035 from the OSS Joint Solid Waste Management District for implementing a recycling program at its Rose Acre Manor property in Port Clinton. Rose Acre Manor is a 10-unit HUD-811 project that focuses on providing affordable and accessible housing to persons with disabilities.

The recycling program will provide a 6-yard recycling collection container for the complex, 10 individual apartment size recycling collection containers for each unit, and five waste receptacles and cigarette collection containers to be displayed throughout the property.

“This grant allows our organization to offer our tenants a responsible way of disposing of their recyclable waste materials,” said Chelle Blausey, housing operations manager.

Also funded through this grant was a double-sided sign made out of recyclable materials for ORSI’s main office. This sign includes the organizations logo and was designed and produced by the WSOS Sign Shop in Sandusky County.

“Since our office is located in a residential neighborhood, it is hard to distinguish our office from a neighboring home. This sign will help identify our agency and it is made out of recycled materials … it’s a win-win, what a responsible way to promote business,” said Stephanie Lowe, executive director.

The popularity of recreational boating has reached new heights as a record number of Ohio watercraft — 419,364 — were registered in 2009. The previous record of 418,300 registered boats occurred in 2003.

The totals do not include additional watercraft registered through commercial liveries.

The ODNR Division of Watercraft reported that watercraft registrations increased in all but seven counties from 2008 to 2009. Counties with the highest number of registered watercraft in 2009 include: Franklin — 26,586; Cuyahoga — 23,972; Summit — 19,320; Hamilton — 17,971; and Montgomery — 15,239.

Deadline nears for heating help With two weeks to go in the 2008-09 Emergency Home Energy Assistance Program and numbers for March still unavailable, the amount of requests for assistance is on course to surpass the 2009 program year.

EHEAP, which is operated by WSOS Community Action Commission Inc., will end Wednesday, March 31. Incomeeligible residents who think they need help from this program must have their applications in by the deadline. The program operates from November 1 to March 31 each year and provides income-eligible residents with one-time assistance to pay

their heating bills.

In February, a total of $82,424 was disbursed to 342 households in the WSOS four-county service area. Of the 342 households, 45 were in Ottawa County while 92 were Sandusky County households and another 79 were in Seneca County and 126 in Wood County.

A similar program, the Home Energy Assistance program (HEAP) which provides assistance to families not in an emergency situation, also ends March 31. This program is operated directly by the state’s Office of Community Services (OCS) and applicants must submit these

applications on their own. WSOS can provide applications to residents who request them.

EHEAP provides up to $600 for propane, and if more is needed, the participant will have to make a co-payment as part of the application process. If a tank is empty, the propane company may charge for a leak test, which will require a copayment, and that may delay approval of the application. Other utilities receive up to a maximum of $250, depending on the utility company.

Military news Navy Seaman Apprentice Peter W. Matla, son of Cherl A. and Paul H. Matla, of Port Clinton, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Matla completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is Battle Stations. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. Battle Stations is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through

We got a note from George Wight this week, who told us an interesting story. Back in 1961 when George was a member of the local Luther League at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Port Clinton, he went to a special Youth Convention in Miami Beach. The group was accompanied by the late pastor Harry Holzaepfel and his wife Verna. The keynote speech of the event was given by an unknown pastor from Atlanta named Dr. Martin Luther King!

Week filled with highs, lows, little in between

Well, this past week was one of highs and lows and not much in between. I’ll start with the lows and move on to the better stuff …

I watched the hit television show, “American Idol,” on Wednesday night with a friend. Of course our interest had been piqued by the fact that a young Ottawa County woman is among the finalists on the show. I watch almost no television and thus had very little idea about what to expect. But there is always a lot of “chatter” around the community about this show so I did know the basic concept. And it has been exciting to know that someone from our area is appearing

on national television.

Anyway, we were excited to have the time and opportunity to sit down to watch and see what all the talk is about.

We viewed it for a while and then gave up on it. My friend said (after hearing some really vicious comments by a judge or a moderator — we did not know what his role was) that the whole thing seemed like “cruel and unusual punishment.” I agreed.

We changed the channel to watch something else. We would like to have seen the local star, Crystal Bowersox, but were turned off by our dislike of the show. I have been told that this show’s comments are “fun.” Hmmmm. It did not look like fun to me.

Unfortunately, almost the very next thing we saw on television that night was a news commentary with a re-cap of an interview where President Obama had repeatedly been interrupted by an interviewer.

or the public in general just because you can — then I wonder what has happened to us as a society.

I think that as a faith-filled people we should all try to think these things through and turn away from this kind of activity and “entertainment.” We could make such progress as a people, not only in a spirit of Christianity but also as coworkers or associates or volunteers for good causes — or maybe just as decent human beings — if we employed a spirit of cooperation and a willingness to treat people as well as we ourselves want to be treated. There are lots of good people in the world who do that.

There are also lots of people who are spending their lives with a goal of causing problems. They are so busy concentrating on one-ups-man-ship that they don’t stop to think about what’s best for their neighbors, families, co-workers and the world.

The fact of the matter is this. Mean people often win. The loud people often win. The people who think these tactics are funny or fun often win. Usually the rest of the world struggles along cleaning up the messes they make and that’s time-consuming, expensive and counterproductive.

Now those were some of the things last week that were downers. But I’m happy to say that last week had a wonderful share of grand things that happened, too.

So I’m moving on to talking about that because nothing is going to change just because I don’t like a bunch of stuff that is happening these days. nnn

So I’m happy to report that I had a successful week in my job as Ottawa County Recorder. First, I am extremely happy to see light at the end of the tunnel on a project I worked on for the Ohio Recorder’s Association. It has taken about a year’s worth of my spare time but, in cooperation with the Wayne County Recorder, we’re now putting the finishing touches on a new book that will contain all of the Attorney General opinions that deal with the work of Recorders. These go back to 1924 and they are still relied upon for much county work. These opinions have never been assembled before but now they’ve been accumulated on paper. The total project is 800+ pages long. Of course the “books” will be printed on computer disks rather than on paper, both for ease in retrieving the information when it is needed and also to keep costs down.

sites, libraries and old files to gather these materials. My contribution was to compile an index of all of this work so that the opinions can be accessed through key words and topics.

It was a long process. But overall it was enjoyable and educational, too. We hope to be able to provide a good working tool to counties all across the state when it is completed. It is now being proofread by other people who will make corrections and suggestions before we put the lid on this project. It was introduced to all of Ohio’s County Recorders last week at a conference in Columbus.

Hard on the heels of that project, another one for the Ohio Recorders Association is being kicked off for the coming year.

The Warren County Recorder and I will head it up but most of the time-consuming work will be done by an eight-person committee who will make suggestions to us for Ohio laws that govern the work of County Recorders. Many laws that regulate responsibilities of Recorders were written about 60 years ago and no longer apply to the way recording work is done electronically today. The committee will recommend some changes that will make the laws more relevant in today’s computerized society. nnn

Some other fun things that happened this past week: spending about 16 hours with 11 young teenagers at a learning experience as they get ready to be “confirmed” into full membership in their churches. That was a very good time.

They were good kids. They were active when involved in games and swimming (or eating numerous snacks) but they were also attentive in the class situations. I loved being there and really enjoyed helping to teach them. nnn

Another great time, one never to be forgotten, was Saturday waiting by the County Line Store near Muddy Creek in Bay Township for the buses bringing students and players home from Bowling Green State University. The PCHS boys’ basketball team had just won the regional title there in a game against Celina. There were literally hundreds of cars and people accompanying the buses or waiting to greet them as they made their way home.

That was fun, exciting and energyzing.

The team now goes to state and plays in Columbus on Thursday night. Good luck, ’Skins! The entire town and community are with you in this.

Kitzler earns OHHS agricultural honor OAK HARBOR — Tyler Kitzler of Oak Harbor High School was recently presented the school’s highest agricultural honor, the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award, sponsored by Monsanto Company.

Kitzler, the son of the late James and Shelley Kitzler, received the award for excellence in academics, leadership and agricultural work experience.

Kitzler’s significant experiences and accomplishments have included being vice president of the Oak Harbor

FFA Chapter, and placement in the areas of aguaculture, landscape management, outdoor recreation, small animal care, home and community development and emerging agricultural technologies.

Krysteena Brown and Noah Neiderhouse are Tyler’s agricultural education instructors at OHHS. This year the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award celebrates its 63rd anniversary. Over these 63 years, more than 164,000 high school

seniors from across the country have received the award, which has become a symbol for excellence and the school’s highest agricultural honor.

In 2009, nearly 2,000 students from high schools in 49 of the 50 states were recognized. The Oak Harbor winner for 2009 was Wes Gyde.

As winner of the 2010 Award, Tyler’s name will be recorded on a permanent plaque displayed at Oak Harbor High School.

A consultant is conducting a survey of senior citizens in our rural counties on behalf of the Area Office on Aging.

This survey is a part of the office’s development process for its 2011-2014 Strategic Plan required by the Ohio Department of Aging.

Up to 720 seniors, 60 years of age and older, across the nine rural counties will be surveyed for their opinions and needs in several key areas, including: senior services and utilization, housing, personal health

and wellness, care giving, and health and prescription drug insurance. Demographic information will also be collected. The analysis will be conducted by Drs. Cary Kart and Jennifer Kinney of the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami (Ohio) University.

Seniors are reminded that the calls are valid and any questions can be directed to Colette Cordova, assistant vice-president of planning and program development, at 419-725-6954.

A Matter of Balance — a program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults — is being offered in Oak Harbor.

Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

Otterbein North Shore offers day trips Otterbein North Shore has partnered with Timely Tours to offer its first series of day motor coach trips.

The first trip is scheduled for Monday, May 24, to Ohio Amish Country.

The motor coach will depart Otterbein North Shore at 7:30 a.m. for Middlefield. After a rest stop, the tour will begin in Middlefield at 10 a.m. and will provide an insider’s view into the day-to-day activities of the Amish people living there. Middlefield is the center of the second largest Amish settlement in Ohio. The day will also include a visit to a cheese house, lunch in an Amish home, a

stop at a schoolhouse and tour of Ridgeview Farm. The cost is $78 per person and reservations are required as space is limited.

This is the first trip in a series of three that will be offered in 2010.

Although specific dates have not yet been decided, trips leaving Otterbein North Shore will also be headed to the Ford Rouge Plant in Dearborn, Mich., for a tour of the factory that manufactures the Ford-150 truck.

This tour will include lunch at a waterfront restaurant and visit to the Conservatory. A trip to Malabar Farm is planned in the fall to view the

lovely fall colors. Included in this trip will be a tour of Mansfield’s restored theater and the opportunity to hear an organ recital.

Levy campaign The Senior Levy Committee campaign managers are Pat Holly, Winnie Chasteen and Barb Magsig. The committee is gearing up for kickoff of the 2010 Senior Levy Campaign in preparation for the May 4 election.

While the Senior Levy Committee has met twice, there is still much work to do.

“All of us (senior citizens) need to get involved in this process,” said Pat

Holly, campaign manager for Eastern Ottawa County.

“These services are for us, the senior citizens of Ottawa County and we must help to keep these services alive.”

Schedel Arboretum and Gardens opening early The Schedel Arboretum & Gardens, a 17-acre paradise of intensively managed gardens and home to hundreds of rare and unusual species of trees, shrubs and plants has announced that, for the first time, it will open its gates to visitors in the month of April. “Since we opened to the public in 1991, we have always started our season on May 1 and we just felt like our members and guests have missed out on so much early spring beauty that is present in April,” said events coordinator Veronica Sheets.

Sheets noted that in the next few weeks the gardens will be adorned with blooming crocus and daffodils among the grove of ancient dawn redwood trees, tulips, forsythia and hundreds of other flowering trees and shrubs, including more than 20 varieties of Japanese maple, many of which grow in the Japanese Garden, will also add their brilliant colors to the spring landscape.

According to assistant director David Halsey, the nearly 20,000 annuals that are on display each year at the gardens won’t be planted until May. “There is still an amazing display of beauty here in the springtime that we’re excited for folks to get a chance to see for the first time,” he said.

April hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tuesday through Friday. The gardens begin normal hours on May 1, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon until 4 p.m. on Sundays. In addition to garden tours, the Brown Welcome Center will also be open. Currently on display in the McAlear Gallery is an exhibit titled Art From India that includes paintings by many artists from the country of India.

By JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher The Zanesville Blue Devils surprised just about everybody on Saturday with a regional final win over Columbus DeSales at the Convocation Center at Ohio University. Everybody, that is, except their coach, Scott Aronhalt, whose team closely mirrors the Redskins as an unselfish group who just cares about winning.

DeSales was heavily favored on Saturday, but the undersized and overachieving Blue Devils took it right to DeSales and broke it open in the closing seconds for a resounding win. It is the first time at the state championships since 1997 for Zanesville where they lost in the Division I championship game. Their team closely matches Port Clinton, particularly with the history of disappointments. They lost in the regionals three straight years, from 2004 to 2007. They were 11-10 overall last year, and, like the Redskins, fell in the first round of the sectionals.

“Zanesville does not have a lot of size,” said Port Clinton Coach Troy Diels. “They have a 6-4 wing player and their posts are 6-1 and 6-2. Their overall team quickness is very good. They are led by their point guard, Tanner Gibson, who averages 15 points a game.” Gibson was the star against DeSales with 22 points.

Now, the big task is to bring the Redskin team back down to earth following the first regional title in the school’s history.

“We will prepare the same way that we always have,” said Diels. “I think it is important to make sure the kids enjoy the experience at the same time. These opportunities do not come around very of-

OCIC hands out Business and Industry Awards The Ottawa County Improvement Corporation handed out its 2010 Business and Industry Awards. The following winners were recognized:

Small business — Martin Industries

Martin Industries is located in downtown Elmore and manufactures molded rubber components used by a variety of industry sectors, including food preparation and industrial equipment manufacturers. Like many of our county’s businesses, Martin Industries started its operations as a result of a local entrepreneur. Herman Gerkensmeyer, started Martin Industries in his garage in Martin, Ohio. What started out as Herman tinkering around with rubber, turned into a full-scale production operation by the mid-80s, when he took a leap of faith and left his garage to establish a facility in the village of Elmore.

Not unlike many industries, the number of rubber manufacturers in Northwest Ohio has significantly declined in recent years. Through the changes in the rubber component manufacturing landscape, including heightened competition from overseas, Martin Industries has remained a steadfast operation. Martin Industries has developed a niche in manufacturing customized, smallquantity orders that larger rubber manufacturers cannot fulfill.

The company has worked extremely hard to retain its existing workforce in the economic slowdown and has significantly increased marketing efforts to current and potential customers. Martin Industries has built relation-

ships with new customers not only in Ohio, but across the U.S. The entrepreneurship that was the fabric of Gerkensmeyer’s life has transcended to his sons, John and Tim. In fact, in 2009 John and Tim listened to a company that was in need of specialty production capabilities that they just couldn’t find. Hearing this, John and Tim did what anyone would do — they built a custom piece of equipment from the ground up to service this client and today they are doing just that, manufacturing large ship bearings for propeller shafts.

Also in 2009, they purchased a 60,000-pound press from Texas to further diversify their capabilities. The delivery and installation was quite a spectacle, when a crane dropped the machine into the building through a hole that was cut into their roof. This new piece of equipment produces ergonomic, interlocking rubber flooring that can be found on the floors of Sony’s manufacturing facilities in Japan because of the floors anti-static configuration.

It is always interesting to learn where we can find a company’s end products. For Martin Industries, you will find their rubber products in virtually every restaurant across the country on the feet of ice machines. You can also find their products on pop machines and even on the feet of food processing equipment manufactured by Marblehead’s Biro Manufacturing.

Overall, the company has worked very hard to preserve its workforce while finding new and creative ways to go above and beyond to meet customers needs. Accepting the

Medium Business — Bassett’s Market

Bassett’s Market has been feeding Northwest Ohio since 1898, when the business opened its first small market in Oak Harbor. The market was founded by Nahmy Bassett and has remained in the Bassett family for more than 100 years, being operated by Nahmy’s wife Mary, sons Abe and Dick, and is currently owned and operated by grandson Mike.

When Nahmy Bassett opened his market, he prided himself on offering customers specialty products and, above all, friendly and courteous service. This business philosophy has continued on and Bassett’s Market is now recognized as one of the most progressive independent supermarket operations in the State of Ohio.

In 1986, Bassett’s opened a second location in Port Clinton which today sits in a 65,000-square-foot facility and is home to the area’s finest wine shop. The original location in Oak Harbor was sold in 1997 and in 2002, Mike purchased a second store in Bellevue.

In February of this year, Mike announced he would be taking his advertising “green,” after determining that his stores print 2.86 million pages of advertising per year, which amounts to almost 9 tons of paper and ink. This advertising campaign is being done in partnership with The Beacon and online.

As the businesses and habits of shoppers have changed over the last 110 years, Bassett’s Market has found ways to adapt and succeed by offering its customers unique products and a special shopping experience.

Large business — Magruder Hospital

Magruder Hospital is Ottawa County’s premier full-service medical facility. The hospital’s mission goes beyond just treating people within its facilities; it extends out into the community through educational opportunities, prevention education, addressing public health concerns and more.

In recent years, Magruder has made several improvements to its facilities, most recently with the completion of a new $2.5 million medical office building and addition of a Sleep Clinic. In January 2010, the hospital was recognized by CNN Money as one of the country’s first all-digital hospitals in the nation, through its implementation of the Cerner healthcare technology systems. This project was undertaken in partnership with Fisher-Titus Medical Center and will define Magruder as a “smart hospital,” meaning it is a fully-automated operation that connects a patient’s health records electronically to a provider.

As a part of the integration of the Cerner system, Magruder will be connecting its patient’s rooms into the system, where a vast array of information will be displayed electronically, from a patient’s blood pressure to movie and entertainment options. This infrastructure investment is being undertaken as Magruder anticipates development of a nation-wide connected health network.

Another project undertaken by the hospital is the formation of a waste reduction committee. As a partner of Hospitals for a Healthy Environment, Magruder has become a part of a national movement to reduce the impact of its operations on the environment and the local community. 2009 data that was recently compiled paints a telling picture. Some examples of Magruder’s waste reduction efforts include recycling nearly 1 ton of tin and aluminum cans, 7 tons of cardboard, and 19 tons of paper.

It is estimated that these efforts helped save 331 trees, 58 cubic yards of landfill space and 9,022 gallons of oil.

In addition to its high level of care, technology advancements and green efforts, Magruder contributes to the community by providing several hundred jobs in the healthcare field and is a consumer of services of our local businesses. The hospital also takes on the role of being an educator, charitable organization and community advocate.

Business of the Year Northern Manufacturing

Northern Manufacturing was founded in 1951 and has been operated by its current ownership since 1975. In these 59 years, Northern has been exceeding customer expectations, providing products that many did not think possible.

Northern Manufacturing’s operations specialize in laser cutting, forming, assembly, and fabricating of everything from simple brackets, to the bodies of Biro Manufacturing’s meat cutting devices, to complex ventilation assemblies. Charter captains address Asian Carp concerns HURON — Asian carp, fisheries management and business diversification were the topics of the day for more than 200 charter fishing captains at Ohio Charter Captains Conference, held March 6 at the Bowling Green State University-Firelands Campus. Often considered the unofficial start of the charter fishing season, the conference, now in its 29th year, gives captains the latest information to help them maximize profits in a difficult economy.

With the invasive bighead and silver carps in the news, this year’s conference included a presentation from Duane Chapman, fisheries biologist at the U.S. Geological Survey Columbia Environmental Research Center in Missouri, who updated captains on the ways the aggressive fish might affect the Great Lakes. Jim Kaster from Ohio Attorney Gen. Richard Cordray’s office expressed his office’s concern about the carp issue and encouraged those captains in attendance to call his office at 800-282-0515 in support of action to keep the fish out of Lake Erie.

Additional fisheries issues were addressed by representatives from ODNR Division of Wildlife, with Roger Knight, Lake Erie Program Administrator, speaking on walleye management, and Jeff Tyson, Supervisor of the Sandusky Fisheries Research Unit, addressing the 2010 fisheries population outlook. Ohio Sea Grant Extension Educator Dave Kelch encouraged the captains to add SCUBA and snorkeling charters to their offerings as a way to broaden their business prospects. Sea Grant Extension Educator Tory Gabriel, who organized the conference, hopes attendees came out feeling more informed and prepared for the upcoming charter fishing season.

“The Lake Erie charter industry provides unique sport fishing opportunities to a wide range of people who collectively spend $24 million on charter fees, food, lodging, and shopping every year,” he says.

“Anything we can do to help these captains succeed in business and understand the Lake Erie resource is going to have a positive effect on the lake as well as the economy.”

Entrepreneur of the Year — Big Sky Saloon

Big Sky Saloon opened in downtown Port Clinton in 2009 and brings a piece of the owners’ love of Montana to Ottawa County. As co-owners of McCarthy’s Irish Pub, another Port Clinton hot-spot, Kelly and Scott Reynolds know how creating a special dining experience is a key ingredient for a successful business.

Kelly and Scott located the Saloon in Port Clinton’s historic downtown, renovating an existing building and creating another reason for residents and visitors to come to the downtown district. The Saloon has been referred to as cozy and nostalgic, and offers bar and booth seating for more than 90 people, as well as a loft area that can hold an additional 100 people.
