Redskins second in state By J. PATRICK EAKEN Sports writer It was not very often during the basketball season that Port Clinton went into a game as the underdog. It happened in front of 13,658 fans during the Division II state championship game at The Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center Saturday afternoon. The No. 4 ranked and undefeated PC Redskins had the dubious pleasure of taking on No. 2 ranked Dayton Dunbar. The Redskins played basket for basket with the Wolverines for three quarters, but PC eventually fell, 64-50. Port Clinton comes home as this year’s D-II state runner-up — putting the Ottawa County school on Ohio’s basketball map. PC coach Troy Diels, the Associated Press Ohio Coach of the Year in D-II, can ask for little more. “First of all, I think it was big for our community to experience it,” Diels said. “I think it’s good for all of our school-age kids, elementary school, middle school and high school, to experience something like this. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “I’m so happy for our kids and the seniors got to experience something like this. It’s obviously something they will never forget and to go through it with them is an honor for me. And, if it happens to help out our program in the end — great, but I think those other things are more important than that.” Even though Dunbar finished the season ranked second in the Associated Press poll, it had been No. 1 nearly all season long until losing three of six games just before the sectional tournament started. Dunbar already had three state championships under its belt. However, for PC it was the first trip ever to a state final. Wolverine wins this season included a 112-47 rout over Dayton Ponitz and 10647 over Dayton Belmont. In addition, 19

AGRICULTURE COMMUNITY BREAKFAST
Speaker: Get ready for a fight By ANGIE ADAIR Editor OAK HARBOR — More than 150 farmers, legislators and students attended the 2010 Agricultural Community Breakfast Friday to celebrate the industry and look to the future. That future, according to featured speaker Dr. Leah Dorman — veterinarian, farmer and director of food programs for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation Center for Food and Animal Issues — could be a rough road. “We are an industry under attack,” she said. Dorman was referring to a pending ballot initiative by animal rights groups that seeks standards to protect farm animals. She said that the initiative’s backers — The Humane Society of the United States and Ohioans for Humane Farms to name a few — are using misleading language to hit voters on an emotional level. Their hope, she says, is to institute unreasonable restrictions on Ohio’s farmers — a move that could be devastating to the state’s farming communities.

Redskins brought the town together By JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher Remember when the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl a couple of months ago? Remember the “pundits” saying that no city in the U.S. “deserved” to have their team win like New Orleans because of all that they had been through. To a smaller extent, the Port Clinton Redskins’ run to the State Division II championship game did the same for Port Clinton and Ottawa
County. When the Redskins clinched the Sandusky Bay Conference Championship in February, just about the time the Saints won the Super Bowl, folks around here said, “That’s nice.” When the Redskins finished their season 20-0, folks around here said, “Wow, that’s never been done before!” When they defeated Perkins for the third time this year to

Port Clinton Police Detective Bob Case sent out a warning this morning about the newest form of highway robery. According to Case, skimmers have been hidden in gas pumps that are able to read your credit or debit card numbers and your pin. This is then transmitted to a remote unit and cards are made and used to purchase items that get charged to your account. “I’ve gotten calls from other agencies,” Case said. “It’s going on across Ohio I can tell you that.” Because the investigation is ongoing, additional details are not available. Case suggests that drivers pay cash for gas whenever possible. Anti-skimmers have not yet been introduced to gas pumps.

American hero makes great Easter wish
I received a wonderful note this week from our genuine American hero, Joe Hrupcho, the last surviving member of Tank Company C and the fall of Bataan. I have been watching the new HBO series “The Pacific” and you really get a sense of what the jungle warfare in that theater of war must have been like. Anyway, Joe says thank you to all who sent him letters. He received more than 50 cards from family and friends in Ottawa County and more than 400 from the students at Bataan School. “That was a great surprise,” Joe said. “I also want to thank the many people who expressed their thanks for my part in the defense of America. It makes me proud of the outcome of the war but sorry for the price we had to pay. Let’s all work for a solution to all wars and live in a peaceful
world as God intended.” Now there is a great Easter wish if there ever was one. We had 84 correct entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Our winner is Sarah Hartley, of Catawba, who found Wylie in the Bob’s Lawn Service ad on page 8A last week. Sarah wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Convenient Stores. We’ll hide Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop us a note at our office or click on the Find Wylie icon online at www.thebeacon.net.
