2010 CENSUS

Make yourself count Officials urge locals to return form

BY ANGIE ADAIR Editor By now, most Ottawa County residents have received a 2010 census form but unfortunately, many have not returned it. According to the U.S. Census Bureau Web site, Ottawa County’s mail participation rate to date is 54 percent — tied with Morgan County for the lowest response in the state and well below the national average of 62 percent. If returns remain sluggish, local residents could suffer. A low turnout could result in resources from government being sent to other areas of the country, said Chris Galvin, Ottawa County Director of the United Way. It could mean the loss of a seat in Congress in Northwest Ohio. Filling out the census form itself is an easy task. “It is ten questions in ten minutes, no questions about income or social security numbers,” said Jim Sass, Ottawa County Commissioner. “It is very unobtrusive and there really is no good reason to not fill it out.” There are, on the other hand, plenty of good reasons to fill it out. Birds bring crowds to coast Thousands expected for Biggest Week in American Birding BY ANGIE ADAIR Editor The tourists will be coming to the area early this year. A birding event planned during the peak of spring warbler migration will draw thousands to the Lake Erie Marsh region. The Biggest Week in American Birding is May 6-16. The inaugural festival, hosted by the Black Swamp Bird Observatory, Tropical Birding, Kaufman Field Guides, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, features workshops, day trips and key-

note speakers — all for free. The festival will accept 1,200 registrants for the official activities including participants from as far away as Guam. But, according to Kim Kaufman, executive director of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory, thousands more will flock to see the warblers. “To have birding this close is remarkable,” Kaufman said. “It’s such a great marketing vehicle for the area. Once you get them here, the place just sells itself.” The tourists will bring with them a love of the outdoors and money to

spend. They stay in hotels, eat in restaurants and spend money around Ottawa

Why here, why now?

Area response rates

“In spring, the pace of migration really heats up. Hormones are kicking in and the birds are in an all-out mad dash to return to the breeding grounds. The broad migration routes they follow from the tropics up through the U.S. eventually narrow, and by the time they reach the Lake Erie Marshes of Ottawa County millions of migrating songbirds are ‘piled up’ in these small remaining areas of wooded habitat along the Lake Shore. As they travel along, the daunting sight of Lake Erie causes them to pause and come down into small remaining patches of habitat to rest and “refuel” to give them the energy they need to cross the Lake. The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and Magee Marsh Wildlife Area represent some of the best remaining ‘stopover’ habitat in the area, and the small patches of wooded areas at the Lake’s edge can be absolutely crazy with birds on many days during spring migration. There are no other places in the Western Hemisphere where bird enthusiasts can see this dazzling diversity of species that right here in our own ‘backyard.’” Birders gather at Magee Marsh to catch a glimpse during the spring migration. This year, birders will be out in droves for the Biggest Week in American Birding.

The 2010 Census is a count of everyone living in the United States and is mandated by the U.S. Constitution. Census data are used to apportion congressional seats to states, to distribute more than $400 billion in federal funds to tribal, state and local governments each year and to make decisions about what community services to provide. The 2010 Census form is one of the shortest in U.S. history, consisting of 10 questions, taking about 10 minutes to complete. Strict confidentiality laws protect the respondents and the information they provide. http://2010.census.gov

Fundraiser benefits winning program The exploits of the Port Clinton boys’ basketball team is still all the buzz around town. It is kind of a shame that the year 13 PCHS swimmers made state, and Mackenzie Stewart won Port Clinton’s first-ever individual swimming title, was the same year the basketball team almost went all the way. Fortunately, Mackenzie is only a sophomore. Speaking of the Redskins, Jeff
