DANBURY
Student starts school work day Danbury High School recently took a day to learn some lessons outside the classroom. On April 14, they boarded buses armed with shovels, rakes and gloves and made their way to community areas to pick-up trash, clean winter brush, introduce new plantings and generally to beautify these public areas. The idea for the day came about as the brain-child of junior Kayla Oxendale. Having been exposed to community service through Buckeye Girls State, she wanted to bring the experience to her fellow students. For the second year, Danbury High School has engaged in a project-based learning experience that takes place over a two-week period when the students return from the winter holiday break. Oxendale headed up the community service group, and she and 12 other students in grades 9-12 did all the planning and made all the contacts that made the day possible. They made countless phone calls, scheduled the day, arranged for transportation, gathered permission slips and lunch counts, organized groups and put together a community service resource book for students interested in continuing their participation in volunteerism. On April 14, their project came to fruition when groups of students arrived at East Harbor, Lake Point Park, James Park, Clemmons Cemetery, Lakeside and the Danbury Police Station to clean debris, trim, and in some cases, install new plantings. Students also visited the Otterbein North Shore retirement home, senior center and aided area shut-ins. When students arrived back at school, with most students being tired from a long day of hard work and fresh air, they completed reflections on their experience. The students definitely enjoyed the day and said they look forward to doing it again. The group plans to organize another community service day next year, this time in May to hopefully head-off inclement weather. Suggestions for service locations are welcome. If you have a project in mind, contact the Danbury High School office at 419-798-4037.

Barb Wenzinger gets ‘Give a Shout’ library honor Congratulations to Barb Wenzinger for receiving the “Give a Shout Award” from the NW Ohio Library Council Chapter. As you may remember, Libraries in Ohio took a big cut in funding in 2009. Under her guidance, the members of the Ida Rupp Library Board went to work on the first ever operating levy campaign, which passed by a substantial margin. Library hours and staffing were restored thanks in large measure to community support and the hard work by Wenzinger and her cohorts. Joe Daugirdas, also known as “The Coupon Guy,” has been

ISLAND GETAWAY
The Port Clinton Eagles Ladies Auxiliary will be holding a Bake Sale on Saturday, April 23, at their lodge at 219 Madison St. starting at 9 a.m. Get there early, when they’re gone…they’re gone!
Put-in-Bay resident Billy Market snapped these shots of a deer swimming out from, and then back into, the Lime Kiln Dock last week. According to Market, the island is home to about a dozen deer, though it hasn’t always been that way. Millie — as she was named by islanders when she came to South Bass seven or eight years ago — was the only deer at first but after being joined by a buck two or three years ago, the population is booming.

Give a Shout
Congratulations to Barbara Wenzinger for receiving the Give a Shout Award, Northwest Ohio Library Council Chapter Recognition Award for 2011. She is an outstanding advocate of the library and we are very fortunate to have her lead our Board. In 2009 the substantial cut in state funding for all Ohio libraries resulted in an immediate impact of reduced hours and services offered by the Ida Rupp Public Library. The situation was grim. The library had to reduce hours and to limit the purchasing of books and other library materials. Like so many other libraries across the country, reductions couldn’t have come at a worse time, since patrons rely on library services more in a difficult economy. Wenzinger recognized the need and acted quickly on the library’s behalf. Under her guidance, the members of the board went to work on the first-ever operating levy campaign for Ida Rupp in response to the drastic cuts in state funding. On Nov. 3, 2009, the community answered the need and passed the levy, showing their support. Almost immediately, hours were restored along with materials purchasing. Community rooms became available. The board hired a new director to begin in April 2010. That was just the beginning. The board and new director wanted to show the community the results of their tremendous support. Changes were made at a rapid pace. Wenzinger was always available to discuss the needs of the community. The board worked hard. The Ida Rupp Public Library introduced popular new services. Wenzinger and the other dedicated Trustees worked tirelessly with the wonderful library staff to make these needed

B-C-S levy
I am writing in support of Issue 1, the Benton-CarrollSalem Local School District’s emergency operating levy on the May 3 ballot. Schools across Ohio are struggling to give their students a high-quality education, and BentonCarroll-Salem schools are no different. The five-year, 3.9-mill levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home just 33 cents per day — less than a cup of coffee. Your school board has been a good steward of tax dollars. Over the past five years, the district has saved nearly $720,000 through limited employment contracts to retired staff, eliminating 18 staff positions, reducing instructional supplies by 15 percent and reducing bus shuttle service between elementary buildings. Other savings include $600,000 per year through transferring vocational programs to Penta Career Center and $900,000 from closing the Rocky Ridge Elementary School building. Failure of Issue 1 will force the district, in the 2012-2013 school year, to close Carroll and Graytown elementaries, move fourth-graders to the middle school and move eighth-graders to the high school. In the 2013-2014 school year, seventh-graders would move to the high school and all programs and activities would be negatively impacted. Benton-Carroll-Salem is the only Ottawa County school district ranked Excellent on the Ohio Department of Education state report card. The passage of Issue 1 is necessary to maintain this high quality of education for the community’s children. I strongly urge residents of the Benton-Carroll-Salem Local School District to continue to support excellence and vote FOR Issue 1 on May 3. Richard Lewis, CAE Executive director, Ohio School Boards Association Columbus

COLORECTAL TEST KIT $6
Unlike other chores that pile up in the driveway, clutter the garage or run wild in the front yard, your financial situation is a little less obvious. That’s why it’s so important to take advantage of our complimentary financial review at least once a year.
Beginning at age 50, men and women who are at average risk for developing colorectal cancer (i.e., no family history, etc.) should begin screening. Screening can result in the detection of colorectal polyps before they become cancerous, as well as the detection of cancer that is at an early stage. This take home kit is a basic screen for blood in the stool, which could be a sign of several colorectal health issues.
We will discuss the different strategies available to help put your finances in line with both your short- and longterm goals.

it difficult to chew, swallow, or speak. It might be necessary to remove part of the lips, tongue, jaw, cheek, or neck. Chemotherapy and or radiation might also be necessary. Resulting jaw pain, mouth sores, decreased or total loss of saliva can occur. Your dentist or dental hygienist can perform a visual and tactile oral cancer screening. In addition to this, there are other more precise tests. Brush biopsies, which are painless and quick, can collect a sample of suspicious cells for a laboratory to examine. Another type of test involves swishing with a specifically formulated solution, and then a special light is used to observe for tissue changes. Traditional biopsies still remain as the definitive diagnosis for cancerous cells. These exams and tests are a great addition to your oral exam. They allow for the detection of pre-cancer or cancer in its early stage, when it can be easily and completely removed. No matter your age, sex, or lifestyle habits, cancer does not discriminate. So visit your dental professional on a regular basis, even if you wear dentures. Your life, or its quality, just might depend upon it. Remember, a healthy smile does a body good.

4404. The Sheriff ’s Office is working with the Drug Enforcement Administration to sponsor this collection. The DEA, in conjunction with state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the United States, conducted the first ever National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in September of 2010. Approximately 3,000 law enforcement agencies participated in that event collecting more than 121 tons of pills from the public. The success from the first event has encouraged the DEA to schedule a second National Drug Take Back Day on April 30. According to the DEA, the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows prescription medicines to be the most abused drugs by Americans other than marijuana. Almost three-fourths of teen prescription drug abusers get the drugs from family and friends. The home medicine cabinet is a major source. These medications should not be thrown in the trash where others can find them. It is equally important to dispose of your medications once they are no longer needed for the illness for which they were prescribed. People should not use medications containing controlled substances outside of a doctor’s care. These medications should only be used by those individuals for whom they were prescribed. For general recycling information, recycling collections or sponsored events, view the OSS Solid Waste District’s website or search: Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Green Recycling Scene to become a fan of the District’s Facebook page.
Doctor presents summerlong stress course Dr. Keith Seibert will offer the Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program in the Magruder Hospital Conference Center. The program will be 7:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays May 16 through June 27. There is no charge for the program as it is an effort through the national non-profit Foundation for Wellness Professionals. Previous participants are welcome to attend. Class size is limited to 30. This program is great for people who are looking for personal and effective ways to respond to stress, anxiety, pain, illness and life in general. While a doctor’s order is not needed, as with any new program or intervention, it is a good idea to discuss with a physician. This program should in no way replace any current course of therapy that a person and their physician are pursuing. Seibert, who has been in practice in Port Clinton since 1980, will be the instructor. He has presented this program approximately 20 times, mostly locally, but also in Toledo and Sandusky. He has worked with relaxation and meditation since 1977 and studied with Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli at the Omega Institute in 1993 at the first offering of the professional certification course. The program initiated in the 1980s at the Department of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center where research continues to demonstrate the power of the program. It is designed to help individuals become more stress hardy so they are able to more consciously “respond” to stressors instead of “reacting” in ways that may have previously been detrimental. It can be a way to gain immediate access to our own inner resources for coping effectively with stress. One of the main proven and beneficial outcomes is the ability of the participant to “self regulate” chronic pain. Participants will learn and practice relaxation techniques which may be targeted to any area of the body especially areas of disease, dysfunction or pain. Typically participants are calmer, less tense, less quick to react, more peaceful and more energetic. This program is an opportunity for an individual to learn some new personal skills in the supportive environment of a group without having to divulge issues, air problems or discuss their situation with the group. For information, call 419-732-4061.

Residents hard at work to get peninsula library BY ANGIE KUKAY Marblehead councilwoman In February of 2002, four women — Lorrie Halblaub, Ellen Tietjen, Maryanne Laubner and Sheila Follman — met to talk about their mutual desire to have a library on the peninsula. Besides books and other audio/visual material, the things they wanted were: a library that children could walk or ride their bicycles to to get books or use computers, a place to disseminate information in our community, Internet access and a safe place to keep and view local history papers and photos. The more they talked, the more they realized what the citizens of this community were missing that citizens of other communities enjoy. So, they invited local organizations to send a representative to a meeting and the Marblehead Peninsula Library committee was born. They got all the committee’s paperwork in order and set about raising funds to establish a local library by having raffles and selling donated used books. The book donations began to take on a life of their own. When the storage unit was outgrown, the committee took a chance and opened a used bookstore in the Kukay Building in downtown Marblehead. Ex-Libras Bookshop opened its doors on May 15, 2004. Sold there are used books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, audio books and other book-related material most for $2 or less. New books are sold by local authors or of local interest on consignment. They have books in all categories, from children’s books to large-print, fiction and non-fiction, newer books and vintage books. The current committee members: Velma Abbott, Halle Bruening, Bill Chaney, Sheila Follman, Lorrie Halblaub, Tom Hetzel, Mary Ann Hickey, Maureen Kennedy, Maryanne Laubner, Barbara Monak, Lynn Pasheilich, Ann Wagnitz and Carol Wise run the business which is staffed by close to 50 volunteers. The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily May through October and weekends November through April. When the current location was outgrown, they purchased their own building at 110 W. Main St., in October of 2007, which has quite a history. In 1892, George Eberwine bought property from Lucian and Mae Clemons and another lot from August and Lena Merckens in a subdivision called Erie View. They built the “Eberwine Cottage” that year and began a boarding house. The next owners, Frank and Myrtle
Noonan, continued that tradition. Pennington and Marjorie Kemp purchased it in 1961 and used it as a residence. Then in 1990, Carol Boos purchased the building, remodeled it to recreate it original look and turned it into shops. Currently, there is a bookshop and the barber shop downstairs with two rental apartments upstairs. With the bigger space, The MPLC designated one of the four rooms as Books to Borrow, lending the newer donations for a four-week period. They have won an Ottawa County Community Foundation grant to purchase an outside book return. The Marblehead Peninsula Lions Club purchased a copy/fax machine and that service is offered for a small fee. Also available is a community bulletin board and a place for informational pamphlets. For those who love talking about books, Barbara Monak leads a lively book discussion group, The ‘Ex Libris Literary League, which meets the first Thursday of the month upstairs at Bruno’s Pizzeria. On the first Saturday of the month, Mother Goose (a.k.a. Doreen Kirk) offers a halfhour of stories, songs and finger plays for 2- and 3-year-olds. Kathy Below hopes to get some teens discussing the popular Hunger Game Series by Suzanne Collins this summer. Anyone is welcome to attend these events. The biggest fundraiser is an event that is called “Good Librations.” It is a silent auction with great food and music held in September or October. Throughout the year, donations are accepted of auction prizes, books, time and cash in the form of donations or MPLC memberships that range from $5 to $100 per year. This business is run without tax dollars or any government help. The goal is to pay off the building, do a little remodeling and reopen the whole building as a true community library with a small book store, as funds permit. Until then the group will go on doing what they are doing and work toward their goal. They have learned that this is a community of readers who love to pass their books on to others. Donations have come as far away as Texas and California from people who grew up here and still love the area. They could not have come this far without the generosity and support of this community and its visitors. Stop in and enjoy! Thank you to Lorrie Halblaub for providing this information.

The Matthews Boat Company provided a livelihood and pride of workmanship to hundreds of Port Clinton workers for more than 50 years, making a more affordable motor yacht that was part assembly line and part custom made. The boats looked as if they were “racing over the water when standing still,” and took full advantage of a fledging personal boat motor industry. Bob Reynolds, grandson of Matthews’ Boat Company founder S.J. Matthews, is work419-734-6202 • 2870 E. Huston became intrigued with the boats when he was invited to film an owners’ gathering at Put-in-Bay. He put together 2 minutes of video from the footage to help raise money for a longer documentary, and the pair presented the work-in-progress to the spring luncheon meeting of the Ottawa County Historical Society at the Island House Hotel in Port Clinton on Sunday, April 10. A compelling part of the story was written when S.J. Tips for planning the perfect outdoor wedding (ARA) — There’s something magical about an outdoor wedding. Being surrounded by nature as you say your vows can make your day even more special. Many couples choose outdoor weddings and receptions because the event can be highly customizable. An outdoor venue provides the opportunity to save money because you can rent everything you need. Here are some ideas from the American Rental Association: 1. Tents protect from all types of weather Making sure you and your guests are comfortable is

very important, and renting tents is the easy way to add comfort and protection to your outdoor wedding space. 2. Customize with the ideal decorations Next, prioritize the most important elements. For example, if you want a formal, ocean-themed wedding, you might want to rent chandeliers for inside the tents, along with a fountain for the centerpiece and blue linens and sashes for the tables and chairs. 3. Decide on the right food options An experienced caterer can help ensure that cold foods stay cold and hot ones stay warm so that guests have an enjoyable meal. If you’re planning to provide the food yourself, make sure to rent the appropriate equipment to keep food temperatures safe. Visit www.rentalhq.com for more information.

522 households get heating assistance As of March 31, a total of 522 households within the WSOS four-county service area were approved for emergency assistance with their utility bills for a total of $85,825. These households were assisted in March through the Emergency Home Energy Assistance Program which ended March 31. EHEAP is administered by WSOS Community Action Commission. The $85,825 was allocated among the four counties in the following amounts: Ottawa County — 56 households for a total of $11,250; Sandusky County — 144 households for a total of $25,053; Seneca County — 131 households for a total of $18,532; and Wood County — 191 households at a total of $30,990. Applications made up to March 31 are still being finalized, so final numbers for the 2011 EHEAP program are still not available, according to WSOS Basic Needs Specialist Tony Lindenberger. To date, 2,744 households have been approved for the program’s one-time assistance with heating bills. This number will increase by April 30 when final numbers are tallied. In the five-month 2010 program, 2,898 households in the service area received assistance. Income-eligible residents in danger of losing heat in their homes due to non-payment of heating bills can get help each year beginning Nov. 1 through March 31 through EHEAP. The program provides emergency assistance to allow homeowners to keep heat in their homes during the winter months. WSOS continues to enroll residents in Columbia Gas, First Energy and AEP customers in the Percentage of Income Payment Plus Plan. This allows a customer to pay their utility bills according to their income. Also, customers of Columbia Gas of Ohio and the First Energy Company can get additional help with their heating bills and electric bills as long as they meet the companies’ requirements and as long as funding is available. For information about this program, call 419-3345126 or 1-800-775-9767.

Are your investments ‘environmentally conscious’?
Information will be available for those looking to sell more, looking for new markets and those who would like to improve the transport of their products. Experts will be on hand to offer suggestions and answer questions and concerns you may have. For questions, call Katie Bibish at 419-259-7500.
On April 22, the 41st anniversary of Earth Day will be celebrated by millions of people around the world. As a global citizen, you may wish to commemorate this event by thinking of ways you can help the environment, such as boosting your recycling efforts and cutting back on your energy consumption. But you can also contribute to a “greener” world through your investment activities. Specifically, you can take action in two related areas: reducing your paperwork and consolidating your accounts. Let’s take a look at both of these possibilities. First, if you want to decrease your investment-related paperwork, you need to take advantage of all the paperless options that have probably been made available to you by those financial services companies with which you work. So, for example, you may want to choose to receive online statements, rather than paper ones. And when you make transactions, you may also be able to receive online confirmations. Not only will online documents help save paper, but it can also help protect you
Advanced classes free for marine trades A group of marine trades employees will begin classes to improve their skills within the industry next week thanks to a partnership between the University of Toledo and three local employment training organizations. The classes, which begin next week, are free to employees within the industry who are currently employed and who may be seeking to upgrade their skills. The classes are available in five areas that include outboard motors, inboard engines and stern drive systems; the fundamentals of fiberglass and repair; customer service and up selling; certification in Ohio Boating laws; and a 10-hour Occupational Safety & Health Administration certification. Instructors of these classes are all master mechanics certified through Volvo Penta of the Americas, Yamaha Corp. and Mercury Marine. Individuals can enroll in any

class. Class lengths vary from a few hours to several days/weeks and all start at either 5:30 or 6:30 p.m. Class sizes are limited to the first 15 applicants. Classes are conducted at the Ottawa County Resource Center, 8043 W. Ohio 163, Oak Harbor and Penta Adult Career Center, Buck Road, Perrysburg. These free classes were made possible by the Ottawa County Improvement Corp., the University of Toledo, Penta Career Center and WSOS Community Action Commission, Inc., which together developed and submitted a proposal that was funded by the Ohio Board of Regents — Ohio Skills Bank to advance the current Marine Trades “Skills for Life” program. It is also supported by area marinas, Yamaha Corp. and Volvo Penta of the Americas. For information on enrolling in any of the classes, call Roger Fisher at 419-334-8911 or email him at rafisher@wsos.org.
from identity theft. The more paper statements, confirmations and similar items lying around, the greater the possibility of their being exposed to prying eyes. (In fact, if you do still receive paper documents, you may want to shred them soon after you’ve reviewed the information.) If you think you may need to produce this investment-related information, possibly to give to your tax advisor, you can always go back to your financial service provider’s web site, access the documents you need, and print them. Most companies make this information readily accessible to their clients for months, or even years, after it is initially generated. Now, let’s move to another environmentally conscious aspect of investing: consolidating your accounts. Start by listing all your financial assets, such as your bank accounts, investments, IRAs and employersponsored retirement plans, such as a 401(k), if you worked for a private employer, a 457(b), if you worked for a state or local government, or a 403(b), if you worked for a school or other tax-exempt organization. By consolidating as many of
these accounts as possible with one financial services provider, you can significantly reduce the number of statements you receive and the paperwork you generate. But the reduction of paperwork is only one benefit you’ll receive from consolidating accounts. You might also be able to lower the amount of fees you pay. And even more importantly, by placing all your financial assets with one financialservices provider, you will be better able to follow a single, unified investment strategy. If you work with a financial advisor, he or she will find it much easier to identify your strengths and weaknesses and help you allocate your investment dollars in a way that’s appropriate for your retirement goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Earth Day only happens once a year. So take this opportunity to think about how you can do your part, through a few simple actions tied to your investments, to help improve the environment we all share. nnn

CATAWBA ISLAND CLUB
Free boat show grows The free Catawba Island Boat Show will open at the Catawba Island Club April 29-May 1 and will include an expanded dock with room for up to 20 more boats than were shown last year. “If you’ve spent all winter thinking about buying, but haven’t made a decision, I encourage you to stop by,” said show manager Ken Alvey. “Thanks to the club, there’ll be more deals than ever before and the location can’t be beat.”
Learn to watercolor from an expert The Port Clinton Artists’ Club is sponsoring a watercolor painting workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Sutton Center, 1854 W. Perry St. The instructor is Columbus artist Kevin Buckland whose work can be reviewed at www.kevinbucklandart.com. Buckland is an associate member of The Ohio Watercolor Society and National Water Color Society. He is past president of the Wester-
ville Art League, and member of The Central Ohio Watercolor Society. His work has won many awards and can be found in corporate and private collections. Students will leave with a work of art suitable for framing. This workshop is open to the public at a cost of $40. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the club’s Vice President Dee Cochran at 419-707-3073.
There will be no charge for admission or parking and visitors will have the opportunity to test drive a broad selection of power and sail boats on Lake Erie. For a bonus taste of summer, Firelands Winery of Sandusky, will conduct a wine tasting from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday to raise money for college scholarships. The event serves a region that, according to watercraft registration figures, has one of the highest numbers of boats per capita
and greatest densities of boats per acre of water in the entire Great Lakes basin. “Boats of all shapes and sizes sell well here,” said Alvey. “There’s definitely something for everyone, whether you like fishing, cruising, sailing or just motoring around the bay.” Show hours are noon to 6 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For information, visit catawbaislandboatshow.com.

Benton-Carroll-Salem School Board President Rick Bast, Superintendent Diane Kershaw and Treasurer Anne Arnold traveled to the Statehouse in Columbus on April 6 to address some of the proposed changes in the state budget. Bast testified before the House Finance Sub Committee. His testimony was centered around the elimination/phase out of Tangible Personal Property Tax Reimbursement as well as Public Utility Deregulation Reimbursement payments and the effect these will have on the BCS School District. As it is currently proposed, our General Fund budget will lose $337,425 in Fiscal Year 2012 from TPP and BCS will not receive any future payments. Originally, TPP reimbursement was to be phased out through fiscal year 2018. This loss will equate to almost $1.1 million overall. Public Utility Reimbursement will also be affected by approximately $353,911 each year for the next 15 years. On top of those two losses, BCS will also lose $246,176 in State Foundation revenue in FY12. These amounts are extremely significant to our district and equate to $937,512 for next fiscal year. Tangible Personal Property and Public Utility Reimbursement payments were promised to the district to replace the revenue funds lost from the elimination of these taxes. Phase-out of TPP was expected, however, not the full elimination within one year. Review of the Deregulation payment was to occur in FY2016, however, phase out was not expected and results in the equivalent of almost 15 mills for BCS being reduced over the next 15 years. The BCS Board and Administration believe that their voice is important for the legislators to hear and the only way to have a chance to make a change is to address the situation with those who can initiate that change. Speaking to our legislators and representatives is crucial if we are to maintain the revenue sources entitled to the district and urge residents to contact their representatives.
