Kasich, Taylor rally local GOP loyalists BY JOHN SCHAFFNER Ohio Gubernatorial candidate John Kasich and his running mate State Auditor Mary Taylor preached to the choir at Catawba Island Club on Tuesday to nearly 150 Ottawa County Republicans, office holders and invited guests. The event was the Ottawa County Republican Women’s Annual Luncheon that normally draws 30-40 people.

First to speak was Taylor, who told the crowd her reasoning for being Kasich’s running mate. “I realize that John Kasich is more prepared to be the Governor of Ohio than our current governor,” she said to enthusiastic applause. Then came Kasich — the main event. “In order to bring Ohio back from 11 percent unemployment,

we need to do three things,” said Kasich. “Number one is jobs, number two is jobs and number three is jobs. We have lost 427,000 jobs in Ohio since the current administration took office, and that is unacceptable.” Kasich said Ohioans are the victims of poor vision and planning. SCENES OF SPRING

6-year-old wows crowds in NYC BY ANGIE ADAIR Editor Gavin George took a stage larger than most 6-year-olds Sunday when he sat behind the piano at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The young prodigy — son of Port Clinton High School grad Eric George — won a competition through The American Association for the Development of the Gifted and Talented to earn his spot at the famed concert hall. “That NY trip was truly amazing,” Eric said in an e-mail after returning to his Granville home. “Gavin wowed them all … every where we went!” And as amazing is Carnegie is, it wasn’t the family’s only stop.

Beacon wins big at MACPA The Mid-Atlantic Community Papers Association, a group of more than 100 free community papers located in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Washington, D.C., held its annual conference and award ceremonies last weekend in Harrisburg, Pa. The Beacon took home top honors for General Excellence for its newspaper content and design as well as the newspaper’s Web site. The initial judging was done by a group of journalism veterans, and the final vote was taken by newspaper peers attending the conference. “It was a great honor to be recognized by your peers and colleagues,” said Beacon Publisher John Schaffner. “The recognition should go to our dedicated team members who work so hard at keeping our newspaper relevant and our Web site current every week.”

Citizens of Ottawa County will gather Friday, April 30, to Take Back the Night. The second annual march rally, which begins at the Port Clinton High School Pe r f o r m i n g Arts Center, calls for an end to violence against women and domestic/family violence. The event includes a community rally with various speakers, a march to the Ottawa County courthouse, a candle lighting ceremony at the courthouse and a survivor speak out. The Clothesline Project — more than 50 shirts created by local survivors of violence against women — will be displayed at the event along with the Silent Witness Project, a group of silhouettes honoring Northwest Ohio women who have been murdered at the hands of intimate partners. This year’s rally will also include a Resource Fair, an opportunity for social service agencies to display brochures and information on services they provide to our community. TBTN events are held in communities around the world. This year’s event will focus on educating our youth and their families on the affects that domestic and
