Primary Group offers help for horses results are in Ottawa County voters said yes to a senior levy renewal and yes to electric aggregation in Tuesday’s primary election. According to unofficial results from the Ottawa County Board of Elections, the senior levy passed with 77 percent of the vote (5,400 to 1,588). The funding will go to providing and maintaining senior citizens’ services or facilities, including but not limited to home-delivered and congregate meals, respite care and Alzheimer’s day care, senior center services, home care, senior facilities and ADA compliance. The levy is a renewal of an existing 0.3 mill tax and will be in place for five years. Electric aggregation, which affords customers increased buying power and a guaranteed discount on their bill, also passed with ease in each of the 16 municipalities that voted on the issue. According to First Energy Solutions representative Emily Ochsenhirt, residential and small commercial users will receive a letter explaining the next steps and offering the option to withdraw from the program. Those who want to be excluded will sign and return a portion of that letter. Those who want to take part do nothing. “Essentially you don’t have to do anything to participate,” said

Sunshine Equine Volunteer Network offers temporary assistance With cases of animal cruelty and neglect splashed across the news, one group of locals has stepped up to help. Sunshine Equine Volunteer Network originated with a small group of local horse owners. They are an organized network offering short-term assistance to Ottawa County horse owners that are unable to care for their horses because of physical, emotional or financial hardship. The goal is to keep horses in their own home and maintain their

Letter carriers across the country, including all of Ottawa County, ask for your help to fill the food banks this Saturday. Please remember to place non-perishable food items in your mailbox or in a bag by your mailbox so your carrier or volunteer can pick them up and

take them to a local food bank. Last year, Port Clinton letter carriers alone picked up well over 2 tons of food! nnn

We had 132 correct entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Our winner is old friend Gene Holcomb of Port Clinton who found Wylie in the Nagoya ad on page 12A last week. Gene wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Convenient Stores. We’ll hide Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop us a note at our office … or click on the Find Wylie icon online at www.thebeacon.net. nnn

Everyone knows what a landmark the Round House Bar is on Put-in-Bay. Well, my good friend Teri Winchester has been the manager there for almost as long as I can remember. They are dedicating this Sunday, May 9, to honor Teri, who begins her final season this spring. Festivities begin with the antique car parade at 2 p.m. and there will be many guest performances by current and past Round House entertainers. Sounds like a great party!

Catawba Island Club, the Nor’Easter Club and Gem Beach Restaurant have teamed up to host what they hope will be a huge event next Thursday, May 13. It’s the Redskin Rally, a progressive feed honoring the 2009-2010 Port Clinton athletes who have done so well this year … girls tennis, swimming and boys basketball. The three restaurants have graciously donated all the food for the event so all ticket proceeds will benefit the Port Clinton Athletic Booster Club. Adult tickets are $20 (if purchased by Friday, $35 after). Students must be accompanied by an adult. Dress is casual, but RED & WHITE! Buses will load at the Catawba Township Hall at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at numerous locations, including the high school office, Minuteman Press and Mary’s Blossom Shoppe.

Equine Volunteer Network is to maintain a list of people that can be called upon when someone needs help. Each volunteer specifies what they are willing to offer — horse care on the owner’s premises, and/or donations of hay or bedding. When a call is received, the list is used to find the support needed. Co-founder, Mary Ebel, says the idea came to her when her husband recently suffered a ma-

My name is Barry the Bear. I was kidnapped from my home (Catawba Inn) on Saturday, April 24. My kidnapper is holding me for $2,000 ransom for the Humane Society of Ottawa County. I really want to come back home to my family and friends. Please help me return home by sending checks to the Catawba Inn made payable to the Humane Society. My daddy will take the checks to the Humane Society weekly but needs to keep a tally of how much has been raised so I can return home soon. Thanks for your much-needed help.
