Relay for Life starts Friday
The Port Clinton High School Marching Band turned up the volume during the annual Walleye Festival parade.
Winners announced for first Walliee Walleye art contest The inaugural Walliee Walleye Art Contest took place at the Main Street Port Clinton Walleye Festival over Memorial Day weekend. More than 50 children ages 2 to 15 adopted wooden Walliee Walleyes and decorated them. All of the decorated Walliees were swimming and diving at the Walleye Festival all weekend long at Waterworks Park.

Ottawa County’s annual Relay for Life kicks off Friday at Oak Harbor High School. The American Cancer Society event brings teams together for fun and fundraising and also to honor those affected by all types of cancer. A reception for men and women who are surviving cancer will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Auxiliary Gym of the Oak Harbor High School. Survivors and guests will enjoy a meal and receive T-shirts and door prizes. Survivors are then asked to kick off the 18-hour Ottawa County Relay by walking the first lap during the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. Wheelchairs are available for those who cannot walk an entire lap. To register for the survivor reception, call Sharon Knoop at 419-707-1948. The event — which features carnival games for kids, DJ’s and bands, food vendors, contests, raffles, prizes and a fun family friendly atmosphere — runs until noon Saturday. In year’s past, Port Clinton has held a separate event but this year, the whole county will come together in Oak Harbor. “I’m looking forward to seeing people we haven’t seen before,” said co-chairwoman Pam Winters. “There will be some surprises that even the teams don’t know about so I’m looking forward to those.” In addition to the games and fun, the Relay offers participants and guests the opportunity to honor those who battle with cancer and those caregivers who help them along the way. Luminaria are sold — bags lit with candles — in honor of survivors, those who have passed and caregivers. At 10 p.m., those bags will light the path during a luminaria ceremony. Guests and participants can buy the bags until the time of the ceremony. All proceeds from those, and the Relay teams, goes to the local American Cancer Society. “I love the people that we work with,” said Winters, who participates because her sister is a cancer survivor and her husband’s 25-year-old nephew recently lost his battle. “It’s a fantasic community. The whole community has a big heart.”

Tell Tales
Wet, stormy spring making waterways hazardous This has got to be one of the wettest spring seasons on record! Last weekend, navigating in a boat on Lake Erie anywhere near the mouth of the Portage River was a hazardous undertaking with all the debris floating down the river. Hopefully, the situation resolves itself soon, but be careful! nnn
Last week, I wrote the story about how the community came to the aid of the people left homeless by an apartment fire on Buckeye Boulevard. I listed a number of folks who contributed, but naturally, we
didn’t get everybody. So, I would like to recognize John Couture from Chef ’s Best Catering who provided food to the folks who found refuge at Our Guest Inn last week. nnn
Matt Valenti is our “Find Wylie” winner this week. Matt found our friendly fish in the ad for Kokomo Bay on page 6A in last week’s Beacon. He wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll be hiding Wylie again next week. If you find him, just drop off an entry form at our office in the
