Relay for Life starts Friday
The Port Clinton High School Marching Band turned up the volume during the annual Walleye Festival parade.
Winners announced for first Walliee Walleye art contest The inaugural Walliee Walleye Art Contest took place at the Main Street Port Clinton Walleye Festival over Memorial Day weekend. More than 50 children ages 2 to 15 adopted wooden Walliee Walleyes and decorated them. All of the decorated Walliees were swimming and diving at the Walleye Festival all weekend long at Waterworks Park.

Ottawa County’s annual Relay for Life kicks off Friday at Oak Harbor High School. The American Cancer Society event brings teams together for fun and fundraising and also to honor those affected by all types of cancer. A reception for men and women who are surviving cancer will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Auxiliary Gym of the Oak Harbor High School. Survivors and guests will enjoy a meal and receive T-shirts and door prizes. Survivors are then asked to kick off the 18-hour Ottawa County Relay by walking the first lap during the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. Wheelchairs are available for those who cannot walk an entire lap. To register for the survivor reception, call Sharon Knoop at 419-707-1948. The event — which features carnival games for kids, DJ’s and bands, food vendors, contests, raffles, prizes and a fun family friendly atmosphere — runs until noon Saturday. In year’s past, Port Clinton has held a separate event but this year, the whole county will come together in Oak Harbor. “I’m looking forward to seeing people we haven’t seen before,” said co-chairwoman Pam Winters. “There will be some surprises that even the teams don’t know about so I’m looking forward to those.” In addition to the games and fun, the Relay offers participants and guests the opportunity to honor those who battle with cancer and those caregivers who help them along the way. Luminaria are sold — bags lit with candles — in honor of survivors, those who have passed and caregivers. At 10 p.m., those bags will light the path during a luminaria ceremony. Guests and participants can buy the bags until the time of the ceremony. All proceeds from those, and the Relay teams, goes to the local American Cancer Society. “I love the people that we work with,” said Winters, who participates because her sister is a cancer survivor and her husband’s 25-year-old nephew recently lost his battle. “It’s a fantasic community. The whole community has a big heart.”

Wet, stormy spring making waterways hazardous This has got to be one of the wettest spring seasons on record! Last weekend, navigating in a boat on Lake Erie anywhere near the mouth of the Portage River was a hazardous undertaking with all the debris floating down the river. Hopefully, the situation resolves itself soon, but be careful! nnn
Last week, I wrote the story about how the community came to the aid of the people left homeless by an apartment fire on Buckeye Boulevard. I listed a number of folks who contributed, but naturally, we
didn’t get everybody. So, I would like to recognize John Couture from Chef ’s Best Catering who provided food to the folks who found refuge at Our Guest Inn last week. nnn
Matt Valenti is our “Find Wylie” winner this week. Matt found our friendly fish in the ad for Kokomo Bay on page 6A in last week’s Beacon. He wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll be hiding Wylie again next week. If you find him, just drop off an entry form at our office in the

Sound Off Emergency crews deserve our thanks Did you ever hear siren and wonder where it is going? As I was getting ready to come to work today, I heard several and when I got to work I learned their destination. As I drove into the City/County complex, I saw fire trucks, police cars and other emergency vehicles at the apartment building next door. Many residents were standing out front and the smell of smoke was heavy in the air. While walking to my office curiosity got the best of me and I lingered for a while watching. It was then that the back doors flew open and out came fire fighters and police officers rescuing two physically challenged residents.
Heavy smoke was billowing around them as they carried their potential victims to safety. Having been present to witness this first hand and then through the day gave me time to reflect on how heroic their actions truly are. My heart goes out to all of those who suffered loss due to this unfortunate incident. But my heart is also moved by the unselfishness of those brave members of our local fire, police and EMS departments who risked their lives to serve, protect and save the citizens of our city. As many of us take time to thank those who serve in the armed forces, let us not forget our local fire fighters, police officers and members of the EMS. The next time you see one of these dedicated people,
take time to say thanks, I know I will. Jeff Bugbee Port Clinton
Community Cleanup The Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all of the volunteers who came out to help with the inaugural Oak Harbor Community Clean-up Day. We had more than 50 volunteers show up on Saturday, May 21, to help pick up trash and debris from the downtown area. We feel that this event was successful and hope to continue with fall and spring clean-ups each year. Thanks again! Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce

Two graduate from court’s intervention program Magistrate Louis P. Wargo III presided over a special session of the Ottawa County Municipal Court Tuesday, May 24. Wargo recognized the Court’s class of graduates of its Benchmark Alcohol/Drug and Mental Health Intervention Court Program after is regularly scheduled weekly session. The court session, followed by a reception for the graduates and their supporters, honored the programs’s graduates for their successful completion of their twoyear program. “Since its inception nearly three years ago, the Benchmark Program has served the citizens of Ottawa County by responding to the County’s mental health and substance abuse needs,” said Judge Frederick C. Hany II. Wargo, who regularly presides over the weekly court sessions, commended the two, highlighting the fact that they made great strides toward turning their lives
around for not only their individual betterment but also their families and our community as well. “These two graduates, through their perseverance, hard work and commitment, have not only bettered themselves but have served as active mentors for those participants following them in the program.” The Benchmark Intervention Program has been, with the assistance of the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office and other community agencies, supervising a rehabilitation program for chemically dependent individuals as well as individuals with serious mental health problems charged with misdemeanor offenses since July 2008. Funding for the establishment and operation of the Intervention Court was initially being supplemented by a Department of Justice Grant, but has, since that date, received the full support of the Ottawa County Commissioners.
Scarves for our Troops The Marblehead Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7572 Ladies Auxiliary has been busy since 2008 crocheting and knitting scarves for our troops. The brutal winter weather in war zones has inspired Bernat Yarns to donate the yarn and Pat Catan’s has worked with the USO to finance shipments of the handmade gifts to our troops. During a recent meeting, Ladies Auxiliary President Debbie Garrard read communications from the 412th Civil Affairs (Airborne Tactical) Battalion in Afghanistan, signed by David N. Volkman, LTC, CA Commanding. Volkman thanked the ladies for

Each summer, youth from across the state travel to 4-H summer camp on Kelleys Island, and you don’t have to be in 4-H to take part. In 2010, 110 campers and 22 counselors from across the county said goodbye to mom and dad and climbed aboard the ferry to cross Lake Erie for a fun-filled camping experience on Kelleys Island. This year, Ottawa County 4-H Jr. Camp will be held June 20-23. Youth in grades three through seven (as of Jan. 1, 2011) are eligible to attend. During camp, youth live in one of 11 rustic cabins with approximately 10 campers and two trained counselors. A modern kitchen and central dining hall provide for nutritious meals, and the beach offers a
unique swimming and nature area. Other facilities include the nature center, craft barn, campfire circle, recreation hall and sports field. The camp environment encourages learning and reinforces the development of life skills. Living in a cabin with a group of other kids of the same age, sharing experiences, laughing and working together is unique to the camp environment. The 2011 Ottawa County 4-H Jr. Camp theme is “Changing of the Seasons at 4-H Camp.” One of the highlights of camp will be a walk through a winter wonderland for the campers to experience winter activities in the summer! Navy Seaman Recruit Brian Carter, son of Sonya Pierson, of Oak Harbor, and Brian Carter, of Marblehead, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Carter completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations.” This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. Battle Stations is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly Navy flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Carter is a 2010 graduate of Oak Harbor High School of Oak Harbor.

New gallery opens Thursday Siena arts in downtown PC features fine art, antiques, framing Siena arts, owned by Port Clinton native Michael Brown, officially opens at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 2, with a formal ribboncutting ceremony hosted by the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce. The antiques and fine arts gallery and picture framing studio is located at 105 Madison St. in Port Clinton. Light refreshments will be served. An art exhibition opens at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4, showcasing works by Port Clinton native Thomas Soderberg. Soderberg, a 1980 graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburg, has extensive experience in commercial art, having worked for and with large advertising and design studios from Wilmington, Del., to New York and Boston. His world — a realm heavily influenced by fashion, advertising, classic human imagery and pop culture — is very evident in this exhibit. Imagine him as a stock figure in Don Draper’s 1960s advertising firm in Mad Men and you’re not far off the mark. Soderberg credits an early supportive community with his success; as a child in Port Clinton, he and Siena arts owner Brown shared summer figural drawing classes at the local community center starting at age 7 and regularly exhibited at local schools and community events. He has worked with fashion images ever since. Influences include television advertising, movie glamour figures, pop icons such
as Jacqueline Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn and Barbie. One of his favorite shows today is Project Runway. Most of Soderberg’s work is in various media; he considers himself first and foremost an illustrator and his working style is very illustrative. Relying heavily on underlying pencil lines — which he likes to keep evident — he layers color over with acrylics, watercolors or dyes. Exploration of the human form is key, and this show is mostly about that — people. “I draw from experiences and people I’ve known or have seen over years of workdays,” he said. “And Port Clinton has figured mightily in recent months. People may recognize some of themselves in my current work.” Siena arts will welcome Hermes Vineyards as special guests at Soderberg’s opening. The Vineyard will be hosting a special wine tasting in one of Siena’s galleries as part of the Grand Opening festivities. Light refreshments will also be served. This event is free and open to the public. The Art of Thomas Soderberg opens with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, at the Siena arts Gallery, 105 Madison St. in Port Clinton. Regular gallery hours are 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. The gallery will always attempt to be open extended evening hours during

Bringing art to life in Marblehead for 30 years BY PAT LUKAC It all started one day when Ben and Wendy Richmond happened to be in Marblehead one weekend back in 1979. Ben was still working at Champion Spark Plug, in Toledo. They saw this old building and Ben said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea, why don’t we live upstairs and open an art gallery downstairs?” Wendy thought it was a great notion. So the Richmonds bought this 100-year-old building and Ben commuted between Marblehead and Toledo for about seven years. Ben and Wendy lived upstairs and worked many long hours to convert the downstairs into the art gallery. The Richmond Gallery opened in June 1981 at 417 W. Main St. Wendy handled the business side of the gallery, making the sales and supervising the framing. “Everybody laughed at us when we opened the art gallery,” said Ben, “but we figured that if we did not give it a try, we would never realize our dreams.” The gallery featured only Ben’s handful of paintings in a 400-square-foot display area with a 40-square-foot framing section in the back. By the mid-80s, the Richmonds felt secure enough to expand. They added another 200 square feet of display space at the gallery and renovated an older building in back to increase the framing studio. Today the gallery encompasses nearly 25,000 square feet of retail space, with the framing and shipping division recently moving to a newly renovated 4,000-square-foot building not far down the street from the gallery, the old Porter Hardware Building.
ED
Richmond’s paintings sold very well. The business grew. And as it grew, Ben and Wendy pumped the profits back into new projects. Shortly after opening the art gallery, the property across the street became available, so they bought the space for parking. Later it occurred to them that there was room for one or two small shops. Ben drew up the plans and work began on the construction of the first of two new shops. Hence, Gulliver’s Landing (now Jodi Did It) opened in 1984 and The Yankee Trader (now Wise Buys). In 1986, Ben felt comfortable enough to make the gallery his full-time job. In October 1986, on Halloween to be exact, he quit the corporate world for good to devote all his energy to the rapidly growing business. Ben said he has never regretted this decision. In the beginning, Ben concentrated solely on dry brush watercolors. Today, after authoring three poetry books and two novels, numerous bronze sculptures, he’s ventured into plein air oils, trompe l’oeil and, most recently, abstract oils. Ben and Wendy purchased the old American Legion Hall just down the street from the gallery. It was nothing but a huge barn-like building. By sketching out his ideas, Ben’s designs converted the structure into Chandler’s Wharf (now Marblehead Galley Restaurant). The Richmonds’ business approach is unconventional, but offers worthwhile lessons for all gallery owners. They designed the original gallery to be compatible with Marblehead’s coastal setting. They strongly believe in the need to create an appealing yet integrated shopping environment.
Ben and Wendy today consider themselves somewhat retired, but can be seen working in the gallery on many occasions. Painting for Ben is a very frightening experience. “It’s not fun at all. Getting started is really scary. A blank piece of paper, got to put something down. How deep is the well, how can I draw a quantity of water, how many trips can I make before it goes dry? It’s perplexing. But I don’t get blocked, I spend months thinking about a piece before I begin, so when I do start, I strike,” he said. Richmond has been featured in many magazine and newspaper articles, including Art Review, US Art Decor, Collectors Mart, Collector Editions and many others. Through their success, Ben and Wendy have been committed to giving back to their community. Their philanthropic efforts include donating proceeds from the sale of Ben’s limited edition prints to the Marblehead Museum, Marblehead Volunteer Fire Department, Ottawa County Holiday Bureau, United Way, National Wildlife Fund, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and the United States Lighthouse Society. The Lake Erie license plate, Ben designed by request from the Governor, has generated nearly $12 million to help clean and maintain their beloved coastline. Although they invested several thousand dollars of their own money in this venture, Ben and Wendy accepted no remuneration from the state of Ohio. Truly a very dedicated and noble effort. In addition, a multitude of hospitals, public schools, children’s charities and senior centers have
been the recipients of their generosity through grants and scholarships distributed by the Richmond Foundation established in 1991. Wendy and Ben have formed a consortium of business advisers to carry on what they have started even in their absence. The have provided detailed plans for future growth and are confident their investment, especially in Marblehead, has a real future. Ben has also been a guest on several regional and national radio and television shows including AM Saturday, QVC Tours of America, the Nancy Sprenger Show and PBS Documentary. Ben does most of his painting in a quaint studio nestled in the forest overlooking Taunton Bay, sur-
rounded by evergreens and wildlife, in Franklin, Maine, a truly idyllic setting for creating. Ben and Wendy are the parents of a son, Matthew, and grandson, Nathan. They reside in Virginia Beach, Va., where Matthew has been a Navy Seal for the past 16 years. Now that the Richmonds are semi-retired, they enjoy spending time at the second home in Maine and visiting with family. Stop into Richmond Gallery this month and wish Ben and Wendy congratulations on 30 years. The Richmond Gallery, located at 417 W. Main St. in historic downtown Marblehead, is open seven days a week. If you can’t stop in, check out the website at www.richmondgallery.com.

Lori Opfer named Leader of the Year 20 Under 40 Leadership program seeks nominations Sponsors of the 20 Under 40 Leadership Recognition Program are accepting nominations for the 16th annual event that showcases young, dynamic leaders in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan who are under the age of 40. The 20 Under 40 program focuses on individuals who have distinguished themselves in their careers and/or in the community. It is intended that the program will further motivate young leaders in the area. Nominations are due by Monday, June 13. To be eligible, candidates must be under 40 years of age by June 30. Forms for nominating candidates can be found in the May and June issues of The Toledo Business Journal and online at www.20under40toledo.com. Nominations require minimal information — name, company, email or phone number of the candidate. Those nominated will be asked to complete a questionnaire about their career, achievements and community involvement. An independent panel of judges will select 20 candidates for recognition. “Every candidate is a winner. By virtue of nomination, these individuals are being recognized for their abilities and achievements,” said Dave DiManna, Plante & Moran, a long-time sponsor of the event. This year’s sponsors include Eastman & Smith LTD., Fifth Third Bank, Plante & Moran, and Columbia Gas of Ohio. Leadership Toledo is a community partner; The Toledo Business Journal is the media partner and WTOL 11, Toledo’s News Leader, provides media support. Cultural arts sponsors also support the program — Toledo Museum of Art, The Toledo Symphony, the Toledo Opera and the Oregon Community Theatre. Chrys Peterson, WTOL, Toledo’s News Leader, will serve as master of ceremonies for the 16th consecutive year at the recognition/awards event for candidates on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Fifth Third Center at One SeaGate, 550 N. Summit St., Toledo. Last year’s candidates come from across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. In addition to the greater Toledo area, 2010 winners hailed from Oak Harbor, Montpelier, Findlay, Defiance, Rawson, Fremont and Van Buren.

Lori Opfer LNHA, received the Leadership Award presented at the Leadership Ottawa County graduation ceremony at Catawba Island Club. The Leadership Award is given annually by the LOC board president to an alum who exemplifies the spirit of leadership in their career and in community activities. The board president selects the winner from nominations from the board and alumni. This is the fourth year a leadership award has been given; previous recipients were Bill Lowe (OCTA), Brad Sander (Genoa Bank) and Kathy Booher (OSU Extension). “It says a lot about Lori that her staff nomi-
nated her for a leadership award,” said outgoing LOC Board President Cathy Allen. “Her efforts to turn Edgewood Manor into an award-winning facility would not have succeeded if she hadn’t been able to build a team of people who share her vision and are willing to follow her lead. Her accomplishments at work are impressive enough, but she also goes above and beyond as a community volunteer. We are very proud to name Lori Opfer as the Leadership Ottawa County Leader of the Year.” A new LOC class will start in the fall. To learn more about the program or to sign up, visit www.leadershipottawacounty.com.

Beyond short-term CDs
Many people depend on certificates of deposit (CDs) to provide extra income. Yet CD rates have been fairly low for a while. In recent months, in fact, one-year CDs were paying about 0.5%, two-year CDs topped out at around 1%, and five-year CDs paid in the 2% to 2. 3% range. Those rates are scanty enough, but they can seem even lower in an economic environment marked by rising food and gas prices. Before you consider alternatives, keep in mind that CDs still offer a key advantage: safety of principal. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) typically insures CDs up to $250,000. And since CDs are relatively short-term in nature, you don’t have to worry about locking away that money for long periods of time. So there can be a place for CDs in the fixed-income portion of your portfolio. However, during times such as these, you might consider looking at additional options, keeping in mind that, when seeking greater income, you’ll likely be taking on more risk. Let’s consider a few alternatives: • Fixed annuities — Many people buy fixed annuities to supplement their retirement income. But most annuities also allow you to take up to
10% of your account value each year without penalty. Plus, the interest rate you receive on a fixed annuity may be more competitive than that currently paid by a CD. Keep in mind, though, that annuities are not backed by FDIC insurance, and any guarantees are backed solely by the paying ability of the insurance company. Additionally, early or excessive withdrawals may be subject to penalties. If you believe a fixed annuity might be appropriate for your situation, speak with your financial advisor. • Bond ladders — If appropriate for your situation, you can potentially gain extra income through a strategy known as a bond “ladder.” To build a ladder, you buy several bonds with varying maturities — short-, intermediate- and long-term. Once you’ve constructed your ladder, you could gain some advantage in various interest rate environments. When market rates are low, you’ll still have your longer-term bonds earning higher interest rates. And when market rates rise, you can reinvest your maturing short-term bonds at the higher rates. But if you need income in addition to your regular interest payments, you can get it from the maturing bonds. Unlike
CDs, however, bonds are not covered by FDIC insurance and are subject to credit risks. Bonds are also subject to interest rate risk: When interest rates rise, bond prices generally fall, and you may lose some or all of your principal if you sell your bond prior to maturity. But by holding your bonds until maturity, you can avoid loss of principal, assuming the issuer doesn’t default. • Dividend-paying stocks — Some companies have paid — and increased — their stock dividends for many years now. If you don’t need the dividends to boost your cash flow, you can reinvest them to help boost your ownership stake. However, companies can reduce or discontinue their dividends at any time, and since stock prices fluctuate, you risk losing some or all of your principal. By exploring alternatives to shortterm CDs, you may find other appropriate investments that may better position you to reach your financial goals — so look around to see what’s available in the financial marketplace. nnn
