Getting help just got easier There’s a new resource available for county residents that makes it easier to find help with, well, almost anything. The Ottawa County Resource Directory is a list of contact information for everything from youth, veterans and senior services to economic development, training and education. “It should be helpful if you’re looking for work,” said Chris Gal-
vin, Director of the United Way in Ottawa County. “If you have kids, you should be able to find resources. If you’re taking care of an older member of your family, you should be able to find resources.” The idea started when a group got together to address early childhood issues. Born from that was the idea of a written directory to give to parents listing relevant
resources. But according to Galvin, who is active in many facets of county social services, senior and veterans groups were calling for the same thing. And so it began, the gathering and organizing of the Ottawa County Resource Directory. “It took a whole slew of people to come up with the categories,”

It all started out one day when our daughter Cassie, now age 10 and going into the fifth grade, wanted to get her hair cut for Locks for Love. She was about 3 years old at the time. Flash forward to today. Cassie has donated her hair four times, the last
Cassie and George Klaehn recently cut their long locks to donate to Wigs for Kids, an organization that provides wigs for those 18 and under who have lost their hair because of medical reasons or an accident. three of which went to Wigs for Kids. Cassie’s brother George, age 16 going into 11th grade, wanted to grow his hair out a couple of years ago. At that time, we just let him grow it and as it started to get longer, we joked that he would have to get his hair cut for Wigs for Kids. He agreed to do just that! When deciding to get your hair cut for this wonderful organization, you have to make sure the salon participates in this program. We were very lucky to have Roseann from Perfect Color Hair and Tan cut the kids’ hair. Her salon is located in Port Clinton. A bonus, she doesn’t charge for doing this. Wigs for Kids is a wonderful organization that kids under 18 years can go to when they lose their hair for various reasons such as: chemotherapy, radiation, alopecia, burns and various accidents. There is no charge to the recipients or their family for the hairpiece. In order to donate your hair, it must be 12 inches long. It cannot be permed or color-treate. For information on how you can help make a difference in a child’s life, visit: www.wigsforkids.org. The brother-sister team made their donations in memory of a girl very special to both of them: Kathryn Cobbledick. She was George’s classmate who was taken from this Earth way to early. Those are Family & Youth Services, Infants & Young Children, Economic Development, Training & Education, Employment, Health Services, Emergency Services, Skills for Living, Basic Needs, Seniors, Veterans and Transportation. According to the directory itself, the number one reason people don’t get help when they need it is because they don’t know where to turn. The organizers of this directory are hoping it solves that problem in an attractive, easy-to-use way. “We like that format: flippable, bright and easy to find,” said Galvin.

Church celebrates 25 years of ministry OAK HARBOR — Grace Baptist Church will celebrate 25 years of ministry June 2630 by conducting an old-fashioned tent revival meeting. Sunday’s services will kickoff a week of special activities to be held under a tent on the church grounds. Sunday’s services will be held at 10 and 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. A carry-in dinner will be served after the 11 a.m. Worship Service. Monday through Thursday services will begin at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Complimentary meals will be served at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Special music will include the Crown College (Powell, Tenn.) ladies’ quartet, Mark & Liz Rogers, Grace Quartet and others. The week will feature the following speakers: Steve Hart, pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church (Century, Fla.); James Lewis, pastor of Harvest Baptist Temple (Clyde); Roger Green, pastor of Grace Baptist Church (Middletown), Evangelist Mark Rogers (Fairbanks, Alaska), Jeff Jones (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Rick Bickelhaupt, pastor of Grace Baptist Church (Oak Harbor). Pastor Rick Bickelhaupt founded Grace Baptist Church as an independent, fundamental, Baptist church in 1986. The church, whose congregation at the time consisted only of Pastor Bickelhaupt, his wife, Gail, and their three children, Jessica, Jeremy and Jonathan, started holding services in the American Legion Hall located on Park Street. After only a few months of services in the Hall, the church purchased the original Methodist church building, which is located on the corner of Church and Ottawa streets, from the Maumee Valley Association of Southern Baptists. The church held services in the old Methodist building for eight years before out-growing it. In the summer of 1993, Grace Baptist Church purchased land just west of Oak Harbor on Toussaint-Portage Road and its congregants began building what would be the new church. The new building was completed in January of 1994 and services were held soon after. Nearly 10 years after the completion of the building, Grace Baptist Church started construction on a new multipurpose facility, which would double the size
of the existing building. The structure, now serves as the home of Ottawa County Christian Academy (2004). Over 25 years, Grace Baptist Church, through the dedication of Pastor Bickelhaupt, has been able to more than 35 missionaries around the world and has given more than $500,000 to foreign missionaries. It has developed many communityoriented ministries, which include nursing home ministries, jail ministries, youth ministries and a K-12 Christian academy. It has also developed a bus ministry and founded The Young Lions’ Club, a children’s Bible club. All members of the surrounding communities are invited to attend these special 25th anniversary services. Call 419-8984002 for details or for transportation. Grace Baptist Church is a local, independent and fundamental Baptist church located between Ohio 163 and Ohio 105 just past the Oak Harbor High School at 325 S. Toussaint-Portage Road.
Bishop Leonard Blair recently presented both papal and diocesan honors to representatives from parishes and institutions throughout the Diocese of Toledo at a closing Centenary Vesper Service at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral in Toledo. “As a community of faith it is important that we find ways of saying thank you to one another,” said Bishop Blair. “After a hundred years as a diocese, it is impossible to thank everyone, but it is possible to identify representative lay individuals and couples, religious and deacons from each parish and institution who exemplify Christian service, and to express our gratitude.” At Bishop Blair’s request, Pope Bene-
dict XVI has conferred the papal Benemerenti (“well deserved”)) Medal on 11 individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the wider Catholic community on the diocesan level. The first Benemerenti Medals were bestowed by Pope Pius VI in 1791. At the Vesper Service, a diocesan Centenary Award was also conferred on 139 individuals and couples nominated by parishes and institutions throughout the diocese for outstanding local service. Among those were locals Doris Biro of St. Joseph in Marblehead, Justine Bianchi of Mother of Sorrows in Put-in-Bay and in memory of Patricia E. Toft of Immaculate Conception in Port Clinton.

COLUMBUS — Pyramid power is out. The power of the plate is in. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently unveiled a new food icon, MyPlate. It will replace the MyPyramid icon used in nutrition education since 2005. “The MyPlate icon is intended to be a very simple reminder for people to apply the 2010 Dietary Guidelines,” said Julie Kennel, nutrition program specialist for Ohio State University Extension and director of the dietetic internship program in Ohio State University’s Department of Human Nutrition. The icon and supporting materials for consumers are available at http://www.choosemyplate.gov. “It incorporates basic messages such as ‘Make half of your plate vegetables and fruit,’ and the idea that protein doesn’t necessarily have to be meat,” Kennel said. “I think it’s a good tool that can be applied in every household.” The icon is based on the “plate method,” which is often used in nutrition programs -- particularly those designed for people with diabetes. “We’ve used it in OSU Extension’s ‘Dining with Diabetes’ programs for years,” Kennel said. The plate method encourages people to manage portions not by weighing and measuring foods but by putting more vegetables on their plate and less protein and grains. Of course, the MyPlate icon also has its limitations, Kennel said, including: The icon includes a symbol to include dairy, which is great, Kennel said, “but you don’t get the message to switch to fat-free or low-fat milk.” Similarly, the portion on the MyPlate icon reserved for grains offers no indication that at least half of a person’s grain intake should be from whole grains. Although vegetables take up a good portion of the MyPlate icon, “it doesn’t help if people continue to just eat potatoes and corn as their vegetables every night.” A healthful diet requires a wide variety of vegetables. The size of the plate also matters. “If your
plate is oversized, like so many tend to be these days, that alone can lead to oversized portions,” Kennel said. Kennel encourages consumers to look at the MyPlate website and download some of the other materials available, particularly the “Ten Tips” series of one-page tip sheets. The first one, “Choose MyPlate,” is a good place to start, she said. It gives more details on how to incorporate the 2010 Dietary Guidelines into day-to-day food choices. Other tip sheets look at specific food groups, ways to eat more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and other ideas for healthful eating. In addition, the website still offers popular interactive tools, allowing consumers to create a personalized eating plan or analyze their diet. Kennel doesn’t believe the new icon will work miracles in improving the typical American diet. “It will act as a good reminder for people, but it won’t alone change consumer behavior,” Kennel said. “That’s where Extension nutrition education comes in.” For nutrition information from the nationwide Cooperative Extension System, including OSU Extension, see http://www. extension.org and choose the “Family” resource area, and then “Families, Food and Fitness.”

Port Clinton City Schools hands out Flagship awards The Flagship Awards are part of Port Clinton City School District’s recognition program to honor parents, community members, staff and students that help the district fulfill its motto of “Proudly Charting a Course for Success.” At the May 6 and June 13 meetings, the Port Clinton Board of Education recognized the following with Flagship Awards: • Julie Fontana, First Mate Award — For the past several years, Fontana has donated her time to assist with the Port Clinton City School District’s kindergarten screening. For four days, Julie helps school nurses with vision and hearing screens. She volunteers her time and it is greatly appreciated. Each year, more than 100 eager youngsters attend Superintendent Patrick Adkins with Flagship recipients Ty Roth, screening. Carrie Sanchez and Julie Fontana. Julie is the proud mother of two students in the Port Clinton City School System, Kate and Nick. Beginning in 2008, Fontana became a member of the district’s Strategic Planning Committee. The school district, parents and community are grateful for her donation of time to this very important event. Due to her generosity of time, Fontana was presented with a Flagship First Mate Award. • Carrie Sanchez, Captain Award — Sanchez received a Flagship Captain Award for the establishment of the National Junior Honor Society at Port Clinton Middle School. The new program provides distinction for those who excel academically at PCMS. Explore options when purchasing bonds As an investor, you may find that bonds can be a valuable part of your holdings. But there’s more than one way to own bonds, so you’ll want to be familiar with the various investment vehicles available — because the more you know, the better the choices you’ll be able to make. So, let’s look at three popular ways of owning bonds: • Individual bonds —When you buy an individual bond, you will receive predictable interest payments. And when your bond matures, you’ll get the original principal back, unless the issuer defaults, which is not common in cases of “investment grade” bonds. However, the value of your bond — the price you
ED
could get for it if you sold it on the open market before it matured — will fluctuate over time, primarily in response to interest rates. (When market rates go up, the value of your bond drops, and vice versa.) In general, you’ll pay at least $5,000 for an individual bond, though that amount may vary. Consequently, while this approach gives you more control, it can be more time consuming and require a larger investment in order to build a diverse fixed-income portfolio. • Bond funds — By investing in a bond-based mutual fund, which may own dozens of different types of bonds, you can efficiently increase your diversification, which is important,
because diversification can help reduce credit risk (although it can’t guarantee a profit or protect against a loss). A bond fund does not pay you a fixed rate of return; instead, you receive dividends, which will fluctuate based on the underlying bonds’ interest rates and capital appreciation. In addition, bond funds don’t have a maturity date when principal is repaid. Keep in mind that when you purchase bond funds, you could be subject to capital gains taxes in two different ways: if you sell your fund shares for a profit or if the fund manager sells an underlying bond for more than it’s worth. This increased capital gains liability is one reason that many people put bond funds in a tax-deferred vehicle, such as an
IRA or a 401(k). • Bond UITs — A unit investment trust (UIT), like a mutual fund, contains a variety of bonds, so you get the benefit of diversification. Unlike a mutual fund, however, a UIT is not actively managed and does not change its holdings. And since no manager is involved in making changes or trades, a UIT has low management fees. A UIT is typically established for 20 to 30 years, but, as an individual investor, you can sell your shares whenever you want, for whatever the market will bear. Although UITs can be some of the most cost-efficient, low-risk options in the fixed-income arena, they are not without risk. Specifically, since a UIT’s bonds
provide fixed interest rates, there’s always the possibility that the bonds will lose purchasing power to inflation over time. When choosing how to own bonds, you’ll need to evaluate many factors — and we’ve only looked at some of them. You may want to consult with a financial advisor to determine which methods of bond ownership are appropriate for your needs. By doing your homework, and getting the help you need, you can maximize the advantages of adding bonds to your investment mix. nnn

OTTAWA OUTDOORS n AGRICULTURE
Five-year survey reveals conservation tillage practices in Lake Erie drainage area
Marsh Wildlife Area will be offering a butterfly I.D. workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the refuge. During the workshop, a naturalist will provide a guided butterfly walk through the refuge and helpful information about how to identify butterflies. The workshop is free and open to the public. For information about this or other Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge programs, visit the refuge website at www. fws.gov/midwest/ottawa or call 419898-0014. The refuge entrance is on the north side of Ohio 2, 16 miles west of Port Clinton.
A recently completed five-year study of conservation tillage practices in the 4.9 million-acre Western Lake Erie Basin watershed reveals that most fields in the watersheds are either tilled conventionally or stirred with mulch tillage at least once every three to five years. Crop rotations including corn were the reason fields used conventional tillage periodically. Corn in a crop rotation was planted using conventional methods 80 percent of the time. “There are varying degrees of conservation tillage,” explains Steve Davis, a watershed specialist contractor working for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The amount of crop residue cover on the field at planting and the degree of soil stirring determines the type of conservation tillage. No-till planting, in which the crop is planted directly into the prior crop residue with a minimum of disturbance, leaves the most residue. “There is a lot of no-till planting in the watershed,” Davis said, “but the percentage of longterm continuous no-till fields is still small.” These findings are significant when considering the role conservation tillage plays in delivering phosphorous runoff to waterways in the Lake Erie drainage basin. Increasing levels of dissolved (soluble) phosphorous have been identified as a major factor in recent algal blooms. Some thinking points to no-till as a main culprit, alleging the phosphorous applied to notill fields stays in the top layers of the soil which may run off easily. Davis refutes the claim that no-till alone is the major cause of the increase in phosphorous based on the findings of the survey. He points out that while phosphorous does run off from no-till fields, especially if rain occurs right after application, the same holds true if phosphorous is applied to the surface on conventionally tilled fields. Davis also points out that the conventional tillage occurring at some time in most crop rotations in the watershed incorporates the phosphorous deeper into soil layers as compared to continuous notill systems. Several factors working in concert are a more likely explanation for increasing levels of dissolved phosphorous runoff. Davis lists changes such as the methods and timing of fertilizer application, more broadcast surface application versus row fertilizer, application of fertilizer in win-

ter months or on frozen ground, increased soil compaction from larger equipment, and a trend towards applying two years worth of fertilizer on a corn crop as other contributors to the phosphorous increase. The use of conservation tillage is critical to controlling sedimentation of waterways and Lake Erie. Davis believes going backwards on no-till is not the answer. He suggests the uncertainty surrounding the increasing dissolved phosphorous runoff levels points out the need for substantial new and additional research to determine the exact forces driving the changes in phosphorous levels. Davis also noted that according to water monitoring data, while dissolved phosphorous has increased in runoff, both particulate phosphorous and sediment in runoff has declined as a result of the conservation practices that have been applied in the Lake Erie watershed. In the meantime, farmers in these watersheds aren’t standing still. Using the technical and financial assistance from the NRCS and its Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), over $4.9 million have been applied to 462,262 acres since 1996 for nutrient management systems in the watershed that control phosphorous runoff. NRCS has given priority to incentives for nutrient management systems within the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative area. These systems use a variety of conservation practices, including no-till, cover crops, precision nutrient application, and controlled traffic, working together to reduce non-point runoff. “I agree we certainly need to drastically reduce dissolved phosphorous runoff in the watershed,” Davis said, “but no-till is an important tool in a farmer’s conservation toolbox. In my crystal ball, I don’t see farmers going back to the days of fencerow-to-fencerow moldboard plowing and all the problems that caused. Fuel prices won’t allow that, costs of cleaning drainage ditches and dredging harbors won’t allow that, and certainly a public that values clean water won’t. Let’s put our energies into more research to find nutrient management Best Management Practices that work with no-till to reduce the soluble portion of phosphorous in our runoff.” For information on the results of the Conservation Tillage Survey, visit www. oh.nrcs.usda.gov/technical.
