Lea Mark’s students at Danbury painted faces on 300 rocks before school let out for the summer. Those rocks are now up for adoption. The “pets” are placed in restaurants, businesses and historic sites around the area and when flipped over send the message the new promotion is all about “Marblehead Rocks!” The idea came about when local businessman Grant McCallum saw an online recap of a similar public art project. After gathering support and putting the budding artists to work, the promotion is now under way.

Fueling Communities gives back to local organizations that support health, education, youth, food and housing to spread charity and goodwill. The summer lunch program provides just that with free

Any student who needs a place to go in the summer in the summer is welcome, according to Chris Galvin, director of the United Way in Ottawa County, who was on hand to accept the check. “This makes it very possible to do the things we want to do with these kids,” she said. According to Conboy, seeing the devastation and being there to help was a life-changing event. “I thought it would be a tremendous experience for her,” said John Gibson, Conboy’s father and the disaster chairman for the Red Cross in Ottawa County. Gibson has served as a local volunteer for the past 32 years and said what Conboy’s willingness to serve filled him with pride and may even have an effect on local services. “She picked up some ideas that we can utilize to make things better here too,” he said. “She probably handled the same amount of cases in two weeks that a local volunteer will handle over a couple years.” And both father and daughter will continue to serve for years to come. “I’ll probably be a Red Cross volunteer forever,” Conboy said. United Way invests $365,000 in the community Thanks to the generosity of our community, United Way in Ottawa County is investing $365,194 in advancing the common good. “United Way is committed to creating a stable community that’s a great place for everyone to live and work,” said Stephanie Kowal, co-chairwoman of the United Way in Ottawa County Community Solutions Team that makes funding recommendations. “We are doing this by focusing on advancing the community around education, income and health.” “Education, income and health are all intertwined,” said Chris Galvin, director of United Way in Ottawa County. “Each program in these areas receiving United Way and community support are contributing

to a more stable community for everyone.” One of the centerpieces of this work is United Way and the community’s efforts in the Conestoga neighborhoods. Working together with the City of Port Clinton, the justice system, private businesses and health and social service providers has meant infrastructure improvements, increased property values, more people accessing alcohol and mental health treatment, housing rehabilitation and neighbors working together to solve the problems they have identified as needing resolution. The successes in the first Conestoga neighborhood have led to implementation in a second neighborhood, Conestoga West, the area bounded by Harrison, Third, Fremont Road and the City

Lind. This year, the Community Solutions Team also partnered with the Ottawa County Department of Jobs and Family Services to provide Job Store services conveniently at the Sutton Center. Residents will be able to complete government applications at the site and tap into the Job Store’s employment resources without having to travel to Oak Harbor. This will mean savings on gas dollars and also makes the Sutton Center an even more inclusive one-stop shop. “I just have to say thank you to an incredibly generous community,” added Galvin. “This work cannot happen without you. And please don’t forget all money raised in Ottawa County helps advance the com-

munities in Ottawa County. Every penny counts!” As a whole, United Way of Greater Toledo, which incorporates United Way in Ottawa County, will invest $11.9 million in Lucas, Wood, and Ottawa counties this year. Of that, $7.6 million will be invested advancing the community’s goals in education, income, and health. An additional $4.6 million in donor-designated dollars will be invested in specific nonprofit organizations. For a complete list of 2011/12 United Way of Greater Toledo community investments, visit www.unitedwayottawacounty. org.

Magruder Hospital advances minimally invasive procedures

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Thursday, June 23, 2011 7A

Thirty years ago, a patient having their gallbladder removed would have a 6-inch incision, spend several days recovering in the hospital and be limited in their physical activity for months. But then came the 1990s and surgical techniques improved when surgeons started performing these same procedures laparoscopically for what is known today as minimally invasive surgeries. Magruder’s surgeons have been performing these surgeries for years with three or four small incisions: one for the camera, one for the surgical instruments and one for suction. Performed as an outpatient procedure, patients usually go home the same or next day with only about 10 days of limited activity. And once again, the surgical technique has improved and Magruder surgeons are now performing single-port, single-incision laparoscopic surgeries, when appropriate. Dr. Isidro Amigo, Magruder’s General Surgeon, was the first one to perform one of these surgeries at Magruder. “This single-port, single-incision laparoscopic technique is a great option for gallbladder removal and other outpatient surgeries such as hernia or appendectomy and some orthopedic surgeries,” said Amigo. “It minimizes the amount of scarring, and recovery time. Our first patients have done extremely well and they were very happy with virtually no scarring and a quick recovery.” Mike Long, President & CEO of Magruder, said the hospital board of trustees approved the approximate $130,000 purchase of the technology in late 2010 from a leading medical technology company Stryker. “This is a great advancement for our community that chooses Magruder for surgical services. A well-researched investment that has paid us back on several levels of satisfaction from our patients.”

Red Cross makes urgent appeal for blood donors Despite the ongoing efforts to call and e-mail blood donors, the local Red Cross is unable to meet many blood orders for local hospitals in the timeliest manner. Due to the low supplies some orders, particularly type O negative, have been put on back order. There is a need for all blood types; particularly O negative, A negative and B negative, which are currently at critically low levels in our community. These critically low blood supplies are resulting in orders being placed on back order; in addition to only filling hospital’s O negative orders for “Transfuse Only.” This means hospitals requesting type O negative must have an immediate and specific need for a specific patient. O-Negative is always in high demand be-

Smart couples say ‘I do’ to value in wedding registries (ARA) - From custom cakes and invitations, to flowers, linens and finding the perfect dress, today’s brides face a flurry of expenses tied to the big day. Couple those costs with a not-so-blushing economy and it’s easy to see why many are paring down their platinum wedding plans and saying “I do” to more budget-friendly options. Whether it’s trimming the guest list or cutting out couture for something more demure, happy couples in 2011 are finding smart ways to curb their dream wedding costs but still throw chic, personalized affairs that won’t break the bank. This reasonable approach is perfect for piecing together the all-important gift registry, too. These essentials will be what take you and your new mate well beyond the honeymoon, so it’s important to cover all bases. But even this can get costly. According to bridal website The Knot, 88 percent of couples establish a gift registry with lists topping out, on average, at 151 items total. Remember, your guests are feeling the financial crunch, too. So when you’re setting out to select your shiny-new registry finds, follow these helpful tips from Black & Decker. That way, you’ll be sure to score great items without putting too much strain on your guests’ pocketbooks. * Stay practical. Everyone loves a splurge. That’s part of the fun. But for the majority of guests, pricey presents can quickly add up. Cash crunch or not, family and friends are forced to spend, on average, between $79 to $146 on wedding gifts. And

for guests feeling the effects of a slumping economy, this can sometimes make for a significant financial hit. Scanner-happy brides and grooms should remember practical picks, too, keeping in mind that lower prices don’t necessarily mean having to skimp on high style and function. So it’s always thoughtful to choose useful items that don’t break the budgets of your RSVPs. After all, guests just want to help you start your happily ever after off right. Help them help you ring in the matrimony by picking budget-friendly options that carry style and value across the threshold. * Kitchen essentials. Food for thought: Never ditch the kitchen. A whopping 90 percent of registered couples ask for kitchen appliances and electrics. After all, it’s the heart of the home and the perfect place to stock up on go-to gadgets for culinary crusades with your new spouse. The toaster, for one, is a classic and coffeemakers are key to starting every morning off right. Space-saving starter homes can always use a countertop oven when cooking for two, while blenders are perfect for whipping up smoothies, milkshakes, salsas and dips. There’s no telling what the future may hold. But with brand-new kitchen appliances, you’ll at least be covered for breakfast, lunch and dinner for two-and any new additions that may come up along the way. * Newfound newlywed features. Marriage may not always be easy. But your new appliances can be. And since home is where the heart is with your better half,

lobby of Central Auditorium, which was the original name of Hoover Auditorium. Antique furniture and glassware filled the lobby and, according to the LWC minutes from 1930, “Central Auditorium walls were hung with nearly 100 quilts, coverlets and antique shawls.” The LWC Antique and Quilt Show continued to be held in Central Auditorium for a number of years during the Great Depression. Hoover Auditorium is located at 115 Third St. in Lakeside. Admission to the Lakeside grounds requires a daily gate pass ($18 for adults, $12.50 for youth ages 1218 or free for children under age 12 and guests over age 90). The Lakeside Quilt Show is free once inside the gates of Lakeside. A partial day, or three-hour, gate pass is also available for $5.50. Free parking is available at Danbury High School (cars must be registered at the Hoover Auditorium Ticket Office). There is no shuttle service provided to or from the school. To park on the Lakeside grounds or the South Gate Parking Lot, there is a $7.50 auto fee.

Lakeside Summer Stage is looking for Jesus … and Judas, John the Baptist and a cast of followers to sing and act in a “light” version of “Godspell.” Auditions are 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 26, in the Upper Room on Second Street in Lakeside. The Lakeside Quilt Show will be on display through July 9 in the Hoover Auditorium Lobby at 7:45 p.m., a half hour prior to all evening shows at Hoover Auditorium. An annual tradition, the Lakeside Quilt Show will once again bring a multitude of colors to the auditorium walls in the opening three weeks of the Chautauqua season. Quilts of various sizes will be displayed, including twin- and crib-size bed quilts and wall hangings. Quilts may be hand or machine-quilted and reflect historic quilt patterns or modern designs. There will also be a special section of vintage quilts, made prior to 1950. This is not the first time that quilts have been displayed in the auditorium. Roth IRA: A lifetime investment Some investments are appropriate during your working years, while others are more suitable for retirement. But a Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA) can provide you with benefits at virtually every stage of your life. Let’s take a quick “journey” through some of these stages to see just how valuable a Roth IRA can be. To begin with, you can open a Roth IRA at any age, provided you have earned income and meet certain income limits. So if you’re just starting out in your career, put as much as you can afford into your Roth IRA and gradually increase your contributions as your income rises, up to the contribution limit. A Roth IRA is an excellent retirement savings vehicle because it can grow tax free and your contributions can be invested into just about any investment you choose — stocks, bonds, mutual funds, CDs and so on. Of course, when you’re young, you might not be thinking much about retirement. But the earlier you start contributing to a Roth IRA, the more you could end up with — and the difference could be substantial. In

fact, if you started putting money into a Roth IRA at age 30, and you contributed the maximum amount each year until you reached 65, you would accumulate more than $766,000, assuming you are in the 25% tax bracket and you earned a 7% return, compounded annually. But, given the same assumptions, you’d end up with only about $365,000 if you waited until 40 before you started contributing. It clearly pays to contribute early and annually to a Roth IRA. (In 2011, the annual contribution limit is $5,000, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older.) There are additional benefits to funding a Roth IRA, such as its flexible withdrawal options, which are available to you even before you retire. Since you already paid taxes on the money you put into your Roth, you can withdraw your contributions at any time without paying taxes or penalties. Generally speaking, it’s certainly best to leave your Roth IRA intact for as long as possible. But if there’s an emergency and you need access to the funds, you can also withdraw your Roth’s earnings tax free, provided you’ve

Things may be getting a little bit “fishy” on Saturday, June 25, at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. held your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’ve reached 59½. Now, let’s fast-forward to your retirement. Unlike other retirement accounts, such as a traditional IRA or a 401(k), your Roth IRA does not require you to start taking withdrawals at age 70½ — or ever. If you don’t need the money, you can leave it alone, possibly to grow further, for as long as you like. This means that you might have more money to bequeath to your children or other beneficiaries, and they won’t have to pay taxes on withdrawals from either your contributions or your earnings, provided your Roth IRA account has been open for at least five years. Keep in mind, though, that your beneficiaries will be required to take distributions based on their life expectancy. As you can see, a Roth IRA can be an excellent financial “traveling companion” as you go through life. So consider adding a Roth to your portfolio — and bon voyage.

Very competitive wages. (EOE) Please submit a resume to: JBH Director of Health Services Otterbein North Shore Retirement Living Community 9400 North Shore Blvd. Lakeside-Marblehead, OH 43440 Fax 419-798-4662 mlenthe@otterbein.org

Blanca Stransky. Events and activities will focus on the Lake Erie ecosystem and some favorite critters will be on hand including fish, snakes and of course plenty of mayflies. “Our annual Mayfly Fest honors those pesky insects we all love to hate. Yet, mayflies play such an important role in the local ecology and in determining the health of Lake Erie that they deserve our respect and understanding,” said Stransky. This year’s activities will again include a special presentation by Dr. Ken Krieger from Hiedelberg University. As a biologist and ecologist in the National Center for Water Quality Research since 1978, he conducts research on the population and community ecology of invertebrates in Lake Erie, its coastal marshes and tributaries including the Sandusky River and Old Woman Creek. “Dr. Krieger is well known for his research on the lives of Mayflies” Stransky said. “We are lucky and honored to have such an expert volunteer to help us with the day’s activities and teach our community.” Visitors will have the opportunity to study mayflies with Krieger and some student volunteers using viewing scopes provided by Ohio State University Stone Laboratory. Children may participate in the ever popular “Build A Bug” and “Bug Mask” crafts. Fishing, Ichthyology and Invasive Species Ranger Programs will provide kids with the opportunity to see and understand some interesting critters and plant species. Plus, some of the park rangers will help children discover the effects of pollution using hands-on water quality testing. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will teach visitors about Lake Erie using the “Lake Erie Literacy Program,” another hands-on activity that the kids really enjoy. Additionally, the Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy will be on hand with information and some of their fun critter friends. All the activities are free and begin at 11 a.m. at the Visitor Center. The activities conclude with Krieger’s presentation at 2 p.m. For information, call Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial at 419-285-2184 or visit www.nps.gov/ pevi.
