Safety strategy revealed After a string of fatal crashes and an outcry from local residents, changes are coming to Ohio 53. The Ohio Department of Transportation recently led a safety audit of a stretch of the road from the Sandusky County line to Ohio 2. The audit team — which included local law enforcement, the Ottawa County engineer and school, city and township officials — studied data and made field observations, finally suggesting upgrades to increase safety. Those upgrades were revealed last week at a special meeting of the Bay Township Trustees. Michael Stormer, planning engineer for ODOT’s District 2 office, led the discussion and reviewed the audit findings which were based on relevant roadway data such as traffic volumes, traffic speed, locations maps, aerial images, crash data and collision diagrams. According to Stormer, most of the collisions on the 5.37-mile stretch of road were rear-end crashes and drivers following too close was “far and away” the main cause. The proposed changes for the road are split into three categories: low cost, short term; medium cost, medium term; and high cost long term. The short-term plans, which according to Stomer will be completed in the next year, will cost less than $50,000. • Install intersection warning signs before Paulsen, Little Portage East, Oak Harbor Southeast, Darr-Hopfinger and Streeter roads. • Install deer warning signs at mile marker 2.1-3.1, a quarter mile south of Little Portage to

I’m sending you this note to send accolades to Cary Ferguson and his staff at Ferguson Gallery in Marblehead. After receiving a gift certificate this holiday season to have a private lesson with Cary to blow glass, I returned last weekend from Wilmington, Delaware and had the pleasure to spend time with Cary and his son blowing glass. What an absolute treasure! I was pleasantly surprised at several other galleries, and glad to participate in your Marblehead Rocks Project for the school, getting a detailed description of the location of the rocks previous home by the Galleries delightful owners. As a seasonal visitor, it’s great to see art is alive in your beautiful area. Mary Ann Moore, Wilmington, Del.

Medium cost, medium term upgrade plans — which are expected to be completed in the next one to five years and cost an estimated $2 million — put a lot of focus on the Ohio 2 interchange. Update plans at that intersection include relocating the guardrail south of the Ohio 2 bridge; installing of turn lanes at Wilcox Road and for the eastbound and westbound ramps; installing traffic lights; and addressing access management at OK Rental and Sales Station. Access issues will also be addressed at Sunoco Gas Station by modifying ingress and egress locations. ODOT is currently working with the station’s owner to address these items. The final medium cost, medium term solution is road resurfacing, both at the Ohio 53 and 2 ramps and the entire section between the Sandusky County Line and the Ohio 2 interchange. As for high-cost, long-term solutions, Stormer said no changes are planned though they will evaluate the need for a modern roundabout at the Ohio 2 interchange.

County forming Citizens Emergency Response Team The Ottawa County Emergency Management Agency announces the formation of the Ottawa County Citizen Corps Advisory Council to guide and direct the upcoming development of an Ottawa County Citizens Emergency Response Team, or CERT. Volunteers are being recruited to serve on both the Citizen Corps Advisory Council and the CERT. The Citizen Corps program is a federally developed volunteer organization, and it is supported by small grants from FEMA to the state and then distributed to county applicants. Ottawa County EMA will re-

ceive $7,000 over the next year to support its CERT program development. Services are provided free to disaster victims and county residents and training to be part of the team is covered by the grant. The Citizens Corps Advisory Council will meet quarterly to assist with the development of policies and procedures, activation guidelines and funding of the efforts to organize the CERT. Their first meeting is 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, at the Sutton Center, 1868 E. Perry St., Port Clinton. The CERT will consist of county residents and workers who want to help when

a disaster strikes or who want to assist with family and individual disaster preparedness activities in the county. CERT does not duplicate efforts of other organizations, but instead helps other organizations who respond to disasters. CERT can do things like establish a Volunteer Reception and Donations Management Center at the disaster site. The work directly with homeowners and victims to get spontaneous volunteers where they are needed, and to distribute unsolicited donations to help them. They support the victims of disaster as well as the organizations and first

responders who are mobilized. In June 2010 when tornadoes devastated an area of Allen Township, the Erie County CERT responded and provided over 800 hours of serve in the ten days following the disaster. The initial training program for the CERT is free and open to the public. The first class will be offered early this fall in Ottawa County. CIC Run/Walk brings in more than $11.5K for Habitat CIC has been doing a Run/Walk for 17 years with the help of the Catawba Cliffs Association, CIVFD, Catawba Island Police, the Stouffer family and Catawba Island Club and numerous CIC employee volunteers. This year, the race brought in more than $11,500 for Habitat for Humanity. According to Michael Schenk, general manager of Catawba Island Club, everyone is proud to help a local family; we can truly say this is a locally

supported event. Many businesses sponsor this race and have for many years. “It was a beautiful sunny day,” said Schenk. “We had over 230 runners, walkers and several volunteers from Habitat for Humanity thanks to Shelley Asmus.” The run/walk is held on the first Sunday in June every year and wraps up with steel drum music and a party with food and beverages for all. Nine-

ty percent of the funds raised from entry fees and local support goes directly to Ottawa County Habitat for Humanity. The goal of the race committee next year is to reach more than 300 runners. Committee members include CIC staff members Jim Wildman, Holly Geary, Michael and Ginger Schenk, Tyson Smith and Dave Kruse. Next year’s race will be on Sunday, June 3, 2012.

The Hahn 2010 Pinot showcases all that is exceptional about Monterey County Pinot Noir. Fresh raspberry and black cherry scents are intense and concentrated followed in the mid-palate by decadent berry compote flavors with fragrant cardamom and clove undertones. This is a rich and vibrant wine whose purity of Pinot Noir flavors are given dimension by a light touch of toasty oak, supported by earthy tannins and classic cool-climate acidity. This versatile wine stands alone well, but would be a perfect partner to a variety of fish, poultry or pasta dishes. Try it with risotto with shellfish, wild mushrooms and pancetta, roast fivespice duck with mango chutney or a traditional pairing of grilled salmon with Pinot Noir pan sauce and garlic mashed potatoes.

Rally for the Kids shopping spree held at Bassett’s Market

Joyful Connections and Ottawa County CASA recently held the “Rally for the Kids” shopping spree at Bassett’s Market. Cathy Gibbons from Marblehead was chosen for the spree when her ticket was drawn at the Rally in May. Gibbons was given 3 minutes to fill as many shopping carts as possible. Before participating in the shopping spree, she spent time formulating her plan of attack. The start of the shopping spree was in the produce section, but Cathy headed directly to the paper products and meat aisle. All together, she was able to grab $318 worth of groceries in the allotted time. The shopping spree raffle was held in conjunction with the Rally for the Kids fundraiser. Both Joyful Connections and Ottawa County CASA are organizations that help children and families in crisis situations. Joyful Connections mission is to provide a healthy, safe and home-like environment where children can interact with family members in a non-judgmental setting. Ottawa County CASA’s mission is to advocate on behalf of abused, neglected and dependent children. Both organizations rely heavily on the generosity of their donors and would like to thank everyone who purchased a ticket for the raffle. The shopping spree and the Rally event would not have been possible without the kind consideration and help of Mike Bassett. Many thanks to Mike for his generosity!

Music in the Firelands Enjoy the toe-tapping music of the 65-piece North Coast Concert Band as the Wolcott Keeper’s House presents Music in the Firelands from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 9. The 1820s Keeper’s House is located at 9999 E. Bayshore Road in Marblehead, 2 1/2 miles southwest of the Marblehead Lighthouse, and was home to Benajah and Rachel Wolcott, early Ottawa County settlers and first keepers of the lighthouse. The natural amphitheater on the grounds behind the picturesque stone home offers a relaxing setting for an afternoon of music and light refreshments. Heritage musician Tracie Henson will perform from noon to 2 p.m. and the North Coast Concert Band’s performance is at 2 p.m. Pie, brownies, ice cream and beverages will be available. Bring your own lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on. The house and adjacent museum/ gift shop will also be open for tours throughout the day, and the Wolcott family cemetery is behind the house and

available for self-guided tours. The event is sponsored by the Ottawa County Historical Society, who purchased the house in 1989 and has carefully restored it as a living history venue. Docent-led tours are available 1 to 5 p.m Monday through Friday throughout the summer season and on second Saturdays through October. The Keeper’s House is supported through donations, grants and fundraising. Tickets for the annual drawing are available at the Gift Shop, and prizes include a framed and signed print, “Holiday Hearth,” by Ben Richmond; a sterling lighthouse pendant and chain from G.S.E. Jewelers; and a Heritage design quilt and a John Deere canister set from Martha and Molly’s. Wyland Gallery to host Ohio-born artist Adam Rote PUT-IN-BAY — Ohio-born modern romanticist Adam Rote will showcase his latest images at Put-in-Bay’s Wyland Gallery, 495 Catawba Ave., Thursday through Sunday, July 7-10. He will be on hand daily and by appointment to meet gallery visitors and discuss his techniques and inspirations. Rote, who grew up in the Cleveland suburb of Lakewood, is fascinated by the cinema and music of the mid-20th century. Many of his canvases reflect the drama and glamour of that era, and feature his signature “uniques” — insets of the age’s film and musical icons. Rote’s paintings often incorporate a combination of acrylics, watercolor pencil, gouache paint and an airbrushing layer to create a striking effect of high-contrast

light and dark. “I love the contrast of black and white, playing with the shadows,” said Rote. “I think shadows typically create mood — they give texture and depth to an image, a painting, a movie.” As well as classic film and music, Rote is inspired by endangered species. His recent work includes a series of bold depictions of jungle creatures. For information, call the gallery at 419285-2233 or visit www.wylandkw.com. “Snow Leopard,” by Adam Rote, captures the bold, muscled grace of the endangered creature. Rote will appear at Putin-Bay’s new Wyland Gallery July 7-10 to showcase his dramatic images.

BUSINESS

The Beacon with GARY COON

Financial Focus

Work toward your own financial Independence Day On July 4, we shoot fireworks, attend picnics, watch parades and otherwise celebrate our nation’s independence and the many freedoms we enjoy. But as you go through life, you’ll find out how important it is to work towards another type of freedom — financial freedom. That’s why you need to put strategies in place to help you work towards your own Financial Independence Day. And there’s no way to “sugarcoat” this task, because it will be challenging. In recent years, a combination of factors — including depressed housing prices, rising health care costs, frozen or eliminated pension plans and the financial market plunge of 2008 and early 2009 — has made

it more difficult for many of us to accumulate the resources we’ll need to enjoy the retirement lifestyle we’ve envisioned. In fact, the average American family faces a 37 percent shortfall in the income they will need in retirement, according to a recent report by consulting firm McKinsey & Company. But now that we’ve gotten the “bad” stuff out of the way, let’s turn to the good news: You can do a great deal to work towards financial freedom during your retirement years. Here are some suggestions that can help: • Save and invest more. Obviously, the younger you are, the greater the benefit you’ll get by increasing your savings and investments. But whatever your

age, you’ll find that it pays to save and invest more. During difficult economic times, of course, it’s not always easy to boost your savings and investments, but try to find ways that are as “automatic” as possible. For example, whenever you get a raise, increase your 401(k) contributions, which come directly from your paycheck. And whenever you get a “windfall,” such as a tax refund, try to use part of it for your IRA or another investment account. • Rebalance your portfolio. It’s always a good idea to periodically rebalance your investments to make sure they are still aligned with your goals and risk tolerance. But it’s especially important to rebalance as you get older

and you near retirement. At this stage, you’ll want to decrease the volatility in your portfolio and lock in what gains you’ve achieved, so you may want to move some (but certainly not all) of your more aggressive investments into less volatile ones.

ments. In fact, the concept of “retirement” has changed so that it now includes any number of activities — including part-time work in a completely different area from one’s previous career. If you are willing to do even a little part-time work during your retirement years, you can greatly reduce the financial pressures you may face during this time of your life. The 4th of July comes and goes quickly. So put strategies in place now to help you work towards your own Financial Independence Day.

• Cut down on debts. It’s easier said than done, but anything you can do to reduce your debt load will free up money to invest for your retirement. Work diligently to pay off whatever debts you can and examine your lifestyle to find areas in which you can reduce spending. • Consider working part-time during retirement. Many Americans are now living longer and enjoying happy, healthy retire-

Hop aboard the tugboat ‘Restless’ for sunset cruise around the Lake Erie islands An Ohio island journey becomes a fresh lake adventure, Put-in-Bay Cruises announce new Put-in-Bay and Lake Erie Island harbor and sunset cruises aboard a historic 38 foot tugboat, the Restless. Take the helm, or sit back and enjoy a sunset and islands of western Lake Erie.

With a home port at Miller Marina, 535 Bayview Ave., Put-in-Bay harbor, the 1938 tug Restless gives a relaxing one and a half hour tour of the bay, along the cottagelined west shore of South Bass Island, and past Middle Bass Island, home of Lonz Winery. The fare is $65 per person, with a two person minimum, for up to six passengers. Light snacks, soda, water and ice are provided. Reservations and more information can be found by calling 419BBQ & Caterers 285-5902 or visit the webBar-B-Que Bills Ribs & Chicken Shack site www.putinbaycruises. www.barbequebills.com com. long history of operating boats on the waters of Lake Erie. In 1978 Market’s parents Bill and Mary Ann Market bought Miller Boat Line, a passenger and vehicle ferry service that operates on Lake Erie between Catawba and Put-in-Bay/South Bass and Middle Bass Island, Ohio. A fifth generation islander, he owns the boat line along with brother Bill Market and sister Julene Market, holds a 100 ton Great Lakes Captain license, and owns and operates the Miller Marina, Put-in-Bay. The tugboat Restless was launched in 1938 by the Palmer Johnson Shipbuilding Company of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, when the Army Corps of Engineers sought a prototype work tug. In hopes of landing a contract to build these tugs, Palmer Johnson built a 38’ 2” tug with a 12’ 3” beam

that drew 5’ of water. However, the Corp pursued a different design, leaving the tug without a home. She was taken back to the shipyard where a For Sale sign was displayed in her wheelhouse. A gentleman from Milwaukee bought the tug and added an aft cabin, head and sleeping quarters. A collector of Great Lakes marine artifacts, he also installed an 1800’s binnacle, a brass steering helm, and portholes and beveled glass windows salvaged from a Great Lakes freighter. The vessel passed into the hands of Roland Schultz, of Traverse City, Michigan, who further restored the tug and named her Restless. Market found the vessel up for sale, drove from Put-in-Bay to Traverse City and immediately knew she would be perfect fit on the island of Putin-Bay.

Coffin’s Corner

Forgotten lessons from the playground

I was an elementary school physical education teacher for over 20 years. It took me a while to figure out that even though my lesson plans focused on learning sports skills, developing coordination, improving fitness and playing great games; what I was really doing was teaching kids how to play together. It was becoming a lost art. Gone were the days when the neighborhood kids gathered in the nearest vacant lot, the local park or even a street to play games. They decided what to play, shared equipment, choose teams and generally only went home to eat and sleep. There was NO adult there to help, so the kids had to figure out everything for themselves. They learned to play together. What follows in my totally unscientific list of what those children knew that today’s kids don’t understand. • 1 — Play fair or you get called “a cheater” and nobody likes you. If you are mean to other people, no one wants you on their team even if you are a good player. • 2 — No one listens to kids who whine and blame others for their mistakes. They end up going home and missing all the fun. • 3 — Everybody gets a turn, even the little kid who isn’t

very good yet. • 4 — Teams need to be fair or it’s no fun. That means all the good players don’t get to be on the same team. Sometimes it backfires, because everybody wants to beat them so badly. (Certain NBA players just learned that lesson, didn’t they?) • 5 — The players on the other team are your friends too. It’s not worth losing a friend to win a game. • 6 — You are looked up to when you stand up for what’s fair. • 7 — The leaders are not necessarily the best players, but usually they are. Being the best carries responsibility for leadership – being a “role model” in today’s vernacular. • 8 — Teammates take care of each other. They have common goals, not just their own agendas. • 9 — You can make up your own games. You can change the rules of any game to make it fairer or more fun. • 10 — Everyone knows who is a star. They don’t have to go around bragging about it or acting better than

County resident joins board of Black Swamp Conservancy Black Swamp Conservancy, a nonprofit land conservation organization based in Perrysburg, held elections of its board of trustees on June 21. Neil Munger, director of the Wood County Park District, and Carol Gee, a communications consultant from Perrysburg, were re-elected to the conservancy’s board. Elected to their first terms on the board of trustees were: • Kelly Faris, chair of the Put-in-Bay Township Park District. • Katie Swartz Rousseau, associate director of American Rivers in Toledo.

• Ford Weber, president and CEO of Lucas County Improvement Corp. Also elected to the board were Tom Reed, treasurer of Entelco Corp. of Perrysburg, and Eric Kraus, product manager of Aquablok, Ltd. The conservancy board elected Reed as president and Kraus as vice president. Louise Jackson was elected as treasurer. Jackson is a partner with the law firm of Spengler Nathanson, PLL. Birding Symposium returns to Lakeside From Sept. 15-18, the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium is returning to Lakeside, where in 2009 it hosted nearly 1,000 attendees. The 2011 event promises to be bigger and better — organizers of this premier birding event expect a capacity crowd of bird watchers from around the continent to converge along the shores of Lake Erie. The symposium will feature programs and performances by North America’s leading bird watchers, an opportunity for birders to network with hundreds of their fellow enthusiasts, a vendor area with nature products and services, and field trips to the area’s best birding spots. The Midwest Birding Symposium is a non-profit birding event held every other year in the Midwest. Since the first symposium in the Chicago suburbs in 1989, the event has been held in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. The symposium took place in Lakeside, Ohio, in 1997, 1999, and most recently in 2009. The MBS always donates the majority of its net proceeds to support conservationoriented organizations and programs. In 2009, MBS made donations totaling $10,000 thanks to a matching donation from The Ohio Ornithological Society. During the past three decades, bird watching has grown in popularity, with about 50 million United States residents taking part in this hobby. Meanwhile the birdwatching and bird-feeding industries have soared to more than $14 billion in annual sales. Bird Watcher’s Digest, The Ohio Ornithological Society and the Lakeside Association are hosts for the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium. Sponsorship and vendor opportunities are available. The conservancy does this to preserve the rural heritage, unique natural habitats and lakes and streams of northwest Ohio. By protecting the region’s valuable land and water resources, the conservancy hopes to create healthier communities with strong, sustainable economies including agriculture and ecotourism. everyone else. • 11 — Yes, there are a lot of arguments, and even sometimes, pushing and shoving, but it all gets worked out. Fair is fair and out is out. You get over it and keep playing. • 12 — No body keeps score. It really IS about how you play the game. Ah yes, I do think those were the good old days. nnn

Student team’s Robotic Water-Sampling Boat expected to save time and money COLUMBUS — An Ohio Sea Grant researcher and his team of engineering students are testing an automated boat prototype that will lower the cost of water quality testing. The team took the craft on a trial run in May at Ohio’s Grand Lake St. Marys and Dr. John-David Yoder, Associate Professor in Ohio Northern University’s College of Engineering, plans to continue the project next year, developing the boat into a product for everyday use. Made of a fishing boat hull and powered by a trawling motor, the 240-pound robotic monitor fits in the back of a pickup truck. Two people can place it in the water, programming its navigation system with a set of GPS coordinates, and then the robot takes over. It travels to those locations, recording water characteristics, such as pH, temperature, and conductivity, before returning to the dock where people can download the data with a flash drive. State agencies and parks test water multiple times over the summer to determine if water is safe for boaters and visitors at public beaches. Advisories have been posted recently at Buckeye Lake and Grant Lake because of toxins created by harmful algae. Frequent automated sampling would offer faster results for state parks, allowing managers to close lakes before

harmful algae concentrations reach unsafe levels. Yoder predicts long-term savings in human power will quickly outweigh the craft’s upfront cost. “We know certain lakes that are used for recreation and drinking water have algae problems,” says Linda Merchant-Masonbrink, Harmful Algal Bloom Coordinator at the Ohio EPA. “We could deploy automated crafts to constantly monitor these ‘usual suspects,’ and would be able to gather rapid results and postings. If we can get real-time data, we can protect people faster.” Yoder predicts that monitoring surface water quality will continue to be important in the years to come. “Hopefully this automated sampler will be a low-cost solution for agencies and watershed management to keep much better control over what’s going on with surface water,” he says.
