Grieving families Walk to Remember By ANGIE ADAIR ZAM Editor More than 70 people gathered Sunday near the lake at East Harbor State Park. Some sat quietly watching the water, others gathered in groups talking and laughing but all had one thing in common: the love for a child who left this earth too early. Members of the of The Compassionate Friends of Ottawa County, a nationwide self-help support organization for families following the death of a child, held a one-mile Walk to Remember. “Our hearts were joined with those hundreds of families across the country walking to remember all children who left us too soon,” said Roseann Hickman, chapter
leader. “We will always cherish the memories of our children, no matter how long or how short they were with us. The walk gave us a way to honor their lives in a truly memorable way.” According to many in attendance, the chance to gather and remember was both a way to celebrate the support and to remember their losses. “It’s a good day,” said Carolyn Pope, who walked with her husband in honor of their 17-yearold son Jonathon who was killed in a crash in 2009. “It’s still an emotional day, but it’s a good day.” Carolyn Pope said she has been attending the Compassionate

We don’t get any rain for a month or so, and then it’s time for the Magruder Hospital Golf Outing on Monday, and it pours! The team of Rick Nemecek, Quintin Smith, Mike Bassett and Doug Focht were the most disappointed team, since they struck for five birdies in their first five holes! Sorry guys … that didn’t win a thing!
About 75 walkers gathered Saturday to celebrate support and remember the children they’ve lost at the walk to remember. The Chaffin family (far left) walked and took part in the butterfly release in honor of their 4-year-old daughter Jaylah who died in a car crash this year.

The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District, in cooperation with Winous Point Marsh Conservancy, ODNR Division of Wildlife, Ohio EPA and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, invite youth in the seventh- through ninth-grades to spend “A Day on the Wild Side.” The camp will be held on Thursday, July 28, at the Winous Point Hunt Club in Port Clinton from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participants will want to bring waders or old tennis shoes, a change of clothes (just in case), binoculars or cameras and an appetite (lunch is included). Sessions you’ll experience include: archery, bird banding, water quality testing, importance of habitat, trapping experience and the history of Winous Point Hunt Club, North America’s Oldest Hunt Club. Cost to attend “A Day on the Wild Side” is $20 and is limited to 50 participants. If you are interested in attending, call 419-898-1595.
Sen. David Burke, left, is sworn in as the state senator for the 26th Senate District by Senate President Tom Niehaus (right). Also present were Burke’s wife Donna and his children.
Dave Burke sworn in as senator COLUMBUS — The Ohio Senate today appointed Dave Burke (RMarysville) as the senator for the 26th Senate District, which includes Crawford, Logan, Marion, Sandusky, Union and Wyandot counties as well as portions of Ottawa and Seneca counties. He replaces former Sen. Karen Gillmor, who resigned to join the Ohio Industrial Commission. “It is an honor to join the Ohio Senate, and I am grateful to have this opportunity to serve the people of the 26th Senate District,” Burke said. “I plan to continue to focus my legislative efforts on job creation, education and healthcare as we work to create a flourishing economy in Ohio that will benefit all of Ohio’s families.” Prior to joining the Senate, Burke served as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives as well as vice-president of Marysville City Council. Earlier this year, then-Rep. Burke sponsored legislation — now law — that gives state officials and local law enforcement agencies new tools to help better fight the growing problem of prescription drug abuse in Ohio. He also served as chairman of the Health and Human Services Subcommittee of the House Finance Committee. In addition to his legislative duties, Burke also owns and operates Dave’s Pharmacy in Marysville. He and his wife Donna have two children, Alexandra and Adam.

Gary Steyer named principal of PCHS Gary Steyer was named Port Clinton High School Principal at the July 18 meeting of the Port Clinton Board of Education. Steyer began his career in the Port Clinton City School District in 1998 as a special education teacher. He was the principal of Portage and Catawba elementary schools and Jefferson Elementary prior to becoming the high school assistant principal in 2008. A committee of high school teachers and administrators selected Steyer who replaces Ralph Moore. Moore was hired by the Ohio Department of Education as a “Race to the Top” Regional Specialist. Steyer earned his Bachelor of Education degree and Masters Degree from The University of Toledo. “I am extremely grateful to be named principal of Port Clinton High School,” Steyer said. “I have been in the community and the school district for 15 years, and I have been impressed by the involvement
of the community members and parents in the schools as well as the dedication of the school staff. It’s a great place to live and work, and I’m proud to be a part of it. “Port Clinton High School has been a leader in the area, and I hope to continue the strong tradition that we have and see our students accomplish great things both academically and in their extra-curricular pursuits,” he added Patrick Adkins, Superintendent of Schools said: “Gary has been an excellent administrator in our school district for a number of years. I am confident that he will continue and build upon the Excellence of Port Clinton High School.” Port Clinton High School has achieved the “Excellent” rating on the Ohio Graduation Test for the past five years. A new assistant principal will be hired. Interviews are currently taking place in order to have the position filled by the start of the new school year.
BUG STUDY The Firelands Preschool in Port Clinton spent a week studying all kinds of insects and bugs. The children pictured made their own magnifying glasses to study their captured visitors with and then released them all later.
Local students participate in pinning ceremony Fifteen students from Bowling Green State University Firelands College will participate in a pinning ceremony in conjunction with their attainment of an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Radiologic Technology. “We are proud of our graduates who have completed the program and have chosen to work in an admirable profession for the delivery of healthcare,” said BGSU Firelands Radiography Program Director Sylvia Fedro. The graduates have completed a rigorous program that included a two-year clinical internship and they have earned the right to take the national examination of American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. “Many of these students will continue their education in advanced placement for radiation therapy, mammography, CAT scan, or MRI, and will work toward
a bachelor’s degree. We congratulate them all.” Local graduates are: • Port Clinton — Courtney Benner, Thomas Day and Elizabeth Norden • Marblehead — Alea Thompson The pinning ceremony is a 1,000-year old symbol of service to others. The earliest ancestor of the pin dates back to the Maltese Cross and was adopted by the Crusaders. The nursing profession assumed the ceremony for their graduates and was soon joined by other professions that serve in direct patient care. The ceremony will be at noon Sunday, July 31, in the Cedar Point Center at BGSU Firelands. Department Chairwoman of Applied Sciences Cynthia Miglietti, Fedro and Radiography Clinical Coordinator Valerie Glowacki will preside over the event.
Local among medical assistant grads Kristen Abney, from Port Clinton, was among the 21 graduates who recently completed the EHOVE Medical Assistant program. Medical assistants are multi-skilled personnel that can perform administrative and clinical procedures. The EHOVE Medical Assistant students worked diligently in this program to complete their 900 hours required. The last 200 hours of their practicum experience were attended in surrounding physician offices to include Norwalk, Bellevue, Clyde, Lorain, Sandusky, Oberlin,
Berlin Heights, Huron and Vermilion. “We cannot thank the healthcare community enough,” said EHOVE Medical Office Programs Coordinator Tonya Lloyd. “Their support is instrumental in continuing the student’s education with hands experience outside of the classroom.” The graduates will be looking forward to taking their rigorous Certified Medical Assistant Exam from the American Association of Medical Assistants organization. Local heads to Uganda for farming program By RON OVERMYER I volunteered for a Farmer-to-Farmer Program administered by the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs. It is administered by USAID. My assignment was to help a Ugandan maize (what we call corn) sector organization with organizational development issues. The organization is composed of farmers, millers, buyers, input suppliers, institutional representatives, society representatives and government officials. The challenge is to structure the organization so that collectively they can have an effective voice in determining their destiny for the maize sector in the Kasese District. The Kasese District is in western Uganda next to the Congo border. Uganda is in East Africa. The district is a major maize production area for Uganda. They presently have about 1,700 farmers in 16 farmer groups that are part of the organization along with the representatives from the other stakeholders in the maize sector. Most maize farmers are small subsistence farmers. Most are growing 1 to 3 acres of maize. They grow two maize crops per year. Due to limited resources and the lack of support services like we have in the U.S., most of them are only producing about 31 bushels per acre. Most of the field work and harvesting is done by hand. They have the capability of raising 120 bushel per acre maize if they used modern technology that is suited to their situation. They would also greatly benefit from an effective agricultural research program, an effective extension service and an agricultural credit system like we have in the U.S. I met about 13 stakeholders for five days per week for two weeks in mid-June to conduct training sessions on organizational development. The training was directly related to their organization. We worked on vision, mission, goals and objective statements that reflected the purpose of the organization. We developed a business constitution that outlined the membership requirements, rights, powers and obligations of the various stakeholder groups in the organization. We developed a five-year plan for the development of the
organization. We developed job descriptions for key people in the organization. We outlined potential enterprises that could be developed by the organization that would significantly help the farmers and also produce income for the organization. We collected financial information that will be used to develop five-year financial projections for the organization. I was impressed with the leaders who met with me. They are very intelligent. They know their challenges. They know their weaknesses. They recognize that they can only solve them by working together. It is similar to the U.S. farming community back in the late 1800’s when farmers formed organizations like the Grange to give them a collective voice in dealing with the railroad monopolies. There are three major production challenges: production cultural practices, proper maize storage and the need for agricultural credit at the farm level. They would like to address the cultural practices with their own extension worker to help farmers improve the use of hybrid seed, timely planting, proper fertilizer use and proper harvesting techniques. They would also like to have an extension worker who will assist the farmers and storage owners with proper storage techniques that will reduce the loss of grain to pests and mold. Then they would like to establish a credit system for farmers that will allow them to keep ownership of their grain until the market has higher prices. Right now, most farmers have to sell at harvest because of household bills that are due around harvest time. Prices are low at harvest and then tend to increase during the next four months. Farmers need credit to pay the bills at harvest but to delay maize sales until later in the marketing season. It was also a tremendous cultural experience to visit one of the developing countries of East Africa. I had many experiences with foods, facilities and people that are much different than the experience in the United States but that story is for another time. Just know that there are wonderful people in Uganda who want to improve their quality of life and it is possible to help them on a one-on-one basis.

Fear of losses may lead to negative investment behavior Like every other investor, you prefer not to see the value of your investments drop. But at some point they will fall simply because of the ups and downs of the market. And how you respond to short-term losses can help determine if you enjoy long-term investment success. Investors’ feelings about losses can be complex. In the field of economics, an area of study is devoted to “loss aversion” — the concept that people dislike losing money so much that, given a choice, they’d prefer to avoid losses rather than take gains. For example, if you have a high degree of loss aversion, then you will find greater dissatisfaction by losing $100 than you’d get satisfaction from taking a $100 profit.
Loss aversion can lead to various forms of negative investment behavior. Here are two of the most common results: • Seeking “risk-free” investments — When you think of investment losses, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a drop in stock prices. If you’re really loss-averse, you might seek to avoid this situation by simply avoiding stocks and placing all your money in other investments. While some of these investments may seem “risk free,” you must consider factors such as inflation risk — the possibility that these investments may provide returns that don’t keep up with the rate of inflation. • Holding “losers” too long — From time to time, you will own investments that, for whatever rea-

son, underperform. If you’re highly loss-averse, though, you may have a tough time acknowledging the losing nature of these investments, so you may be tempted to hold on to them until they “bounce back.” But if the investment’s fundamentals change, or if the investment no longer aligns with your goals, it may be time to sell it and look for other opportunities. Conversely, you may want to hold on to quality investments whose price has dropped in the short term, because these investments may well recover. How can you avoid these types of behavior? For starters, you’ll need to recognize the symptoms of loss aversion in yourself — and then resolve to overcome them. Accept the fact that short-term losses are part of investing and that every single investment carries some type of risk. This doesn’t mean, of course, that you should do nothing to reduce your risk. One effective risk-fighting measure you can take is to diversify your holdings by investing in a variety of stocks, bonds, government securities, CDs and other investment vehicles. If you had all your holdings in only stocks or bonds, a downturn primarily affecting one of those assets could lead to a big hit for your portfolio. But by spreading your dollars among a variety of investments, you’re also spreading the risk. Keep in mind, though, that diversification by itself can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Investment losses, even short-term ones, aren’t much fun. But by not overreacting to these losses, and by diversifying your portfolio in a way that best meets your individual needs, you can look past today’s losses toward tomorrow’s possibilities.

Baumann Auto Center steps up to the plate Baumann Auto Center is supporting the Port Clinton community through a partnership with Port Clinton Youth Baseball and Softball League. The dealership will provide baseball equipment, instructional clinics, a monetary donation and an opportunity to raise an additional $10,000 in funds through a Chevy vehicle giveaway-fundraiser. The effort by Baumann Auto Center is part of the Chevy Youth Baseball initiative being rolled out across the nation from March through July 2011. “Baseball is a great American past-time and Chevrolet is proud to have a longstanding history with this tradition on a national level. The Baumann Auto Center is bringing that level of commitment for youth baseball to the Port Clinton community, where our customers and their families live,” said Buck Baumann, owner of the Baumann Auto Center. “Our youth baseball program in Port Clinton is truly cherished and we are happy and excited to support the kids in a significant way.” Baumann Auto Center presented the Port Clinton Youth Baseball and Softball League with equipment kits complete with equipment bags, baseball buckets, dugout managers, and Chevy Youth Baseball T-shirts. The sponsorship includes clinics with experienced instructors from former
MLB/MiLB players and coaches or the Ripken Baseball professional staff. In addition, a one-time monetary donation check was presented by Baumann Auto Center to Port Clinton Youth Baseball and Softball League. The team also will have an opportunity to raise additional funds for their use as part of a Chevy Youth Baseball Fundraiser. Sponsored leagues across the country will each receive 2,000 fundraiser entry tickets to distribute for a suggested donation, and the league will keep 100 percent of proceeds raised. At the end of the fundraiser, there will be five winners of a Chevy Equinox or Chevy Cruze vehicle of choice (up to $30,000 in value), and in each participating market there will be a secondary prize of a home entertainment center valued at $1,000.
