Soil & Water Conservation District puts on Lake Erie Ag Tour BY ANGIE ADAIR ZAM Editor About 40 area farmers boarded boats Monday morning and headed out onto Lake Erie during the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District’s Lake Erie Ag Tour. The groups — aboard the Gibraltar III and the BioLab — were then led by Stone Lab staffers through a number of water quality monitoring exercises. In addition to basics like wave direction and speed, water and air temperature and the depth of the station, participants learned how to measure sunlight penetration and the amount of oxygen in the water. To see what was living in the lake, the guests also dredged the bottom pulling up zebra mussels and mayflies and trawled for fish. After the net was in the water for about 5 minutes, the BioLab brought up more than 200 fish including yellow, white

Anyway, all day this Saturday, starting at noon, some great bands will be playing some great rock ’n’ roll classics harkening back to the days when Gem Beach Dance Hall was a rock ’n’ roll Mecca! One of the bands to play there back in the 60s was Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. The feature band Saturday will be the Bob Seger tribute band Lookin’ Back. The party runs until 8 p.m. and parking will be available with shuttles along Ohio 163 in the old Winke’s Storage Building lot. All proceeds go to United Way in Ottawa County. nnn

Prosecuting Attorney Mark Mulligan and Treasurer Bob Hille are now concluding the initial phase of their campaign to collect past-due real estate taxes in Ottawa County. The officials have collected more than $1,138,000 over an 18-month period. Hille and Mulligan primarily concentrated their efforts on large delinquencies that were the result of willful failures to pay. When confronted with the possibility of foreclosure, many delinquent taxpayers paid off the outstanding debt; other property owners went through the foreclosure process. “Foreclosure is the final alternative, but is

Nathan Green, Director of Strategic Business Investment Division of the Ohio Department of Development, was the main speaker at the Friday morning breakfast event for Experience Ottawa County. He explained the changes coming with the JobsOhio initiative, a portion of which was declared unconstitutional by the Ohio Supreme Court on Monday. One of the sponsors of the Supreme Court challenge to House Bill 1 that created the JobsOhio program was local State Rep. Dennis Murray. The Court essentially agreed with Murray that the legislature did not have the authority to take the challenge directly to the Supreme Court. It can now be heard in lower courts. One of the other initiatives he talked about was the creation of a new “TourismOhio” operation to challenge neighboring states like Michigan in their marketing efforts. Experience Ottawa County is a longs-tanding program sponsored by the Ottawa County Community Improvement Corp. and this year’s event started

By JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher Following a national trend, new home prices along the lakeshore have dropped in the past several years. However, according to statistics from the Ohio Association of Realtors, home sale prices were up in July compared with 2010 figures. “Throughout the state we experienced a significant uptick in activity in July which has buoyed the industry’s outlook for the second half of the year,” said OAR President Meg Hudson. “We’re hopeful that the marketplace is poised to regain its footing and overcome the challenges that have beset the sector since the onset of the recession in 2008.” According to statistics published by OAR, sales since January 2011 have been very flat for total units sold, increasing by one through July of 2011 compared with the same period last year. Of more significance was the average sale price and the dollar volume, which increased by roughly 8 percent year over last year’s January through July numbers. For the month of July, local sales increased from 140 units in July of 2010 to 170 in July of 2011, a healthy jump of 21.4 percent. Of even more significance, dollar volume in sales nearly doubled compared to July of 2010 while the average sale price jumped by more than 60 percent.

There is a whole lot of Port Clinton under construction these days, some of which is happening on Fulton Street now through Friday. The contractor firm Inland Waters is lining the sanitary sewer lines between Second and Fourth streets. Since school started Tuesday in Port Clinton and Fulton Street is a popular route to the high school, they will be working from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the rest of the week. Fulton Street will not be closed during the nighttime construction, but drivers should take care to avoid accidents and injuries to the workers.

Sound Off Vets gone fishing I would like to take a moment to thank Jack and Kay Tibble from Tibbles Marina and Service for the recent Free Veterans Fishing trip. After 90 years of serving the Lake Erie Islands Community, Tibbles Marine and Service of Marblehead, decided to give back for their years of success. A flier was sent out to the area Veterans Organizations welcoming Veterans to a free trip of perch fishing. Fifty-three veterans from the area signed on four charter boats to the Erie Island area to fish for perch at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11. Three WWII vets, five Korea vets, 22 Vietnam Vets and one Iraqi Freedom veteran were amongst the attendees. These 55 veterans represented VFW Posts 2920, 2480,108, 7572,1148 and 4738. There were also 13 AmVets members and 17 American Legion members. Myself and 14 other veterans were assigned to the Harbor Queen II with Captain Charles Muding. Captain Chuck chose the best honey hole on the lake! His boat limited out by noon. The larg-
est fish caught was 11 3/4” by Past District 9 VFW Commander Warren “David” Croxton of Port Clinton. The other three boats — Miss Jill with Captain Jim, Miss Jackie with Captain John and the original Harbor Queen with Captain Coop —followed shortly behind. Upon the return of all four boats, Tibbles Marina and Service provided a mouthwatering fish fry with french fries, coleslaw, baked beans and adult beverages free of charge to the veterans. The Lake Erie Perch and fries were provided by Cook Opie Rohrer. During the conclusion of this excursion, all gathered and sang “God Bless America.” Thank you Jack and Kay Tibble for your continued support for our veterans and our community! We are trying to secure funding for our building and hopefully this is not so far away! and Rodney Kusic who volunteered their time to educate and answer questions related to animal care and our efforts; and Bruce Cohagen from Camp Runinmuck who allowed us to use his PA system at the end of the sale and let us set up a table for information to his customers and members prior to the event. So many were involved in this effort that I hope I did not exclude anyone. Thank you to all and a special thank you to all who attended and donated. Four graduate from court program Magistrate Louis Wargo III presided over a special session of the Ottawa County Municipal Court Tuesday, Aug. 16. Wargo recognized the Court’s most recent class of graduates of its Benchmark Alcohol/Drug and Mental Health Intervention Court Program. The Court session, followed by a reception for the graduates and their supporters, honored the program’s graduates for their successful completion of their 26-month program. “The Benchmark Program continues its service as an innovative program responding to the mental health and substance abuse issues facing the citizens and families of our county,” said Judge Fritz Hany. Wargo, who regularly presides over the weekly court sessions, commended the four, highlighting the fact that they made good progress toward turning their lives around for not only their individual betterment but also their family and our community as well.
“These four graduates have not only bettered themselves, but have served as a role model and active mentor for those participants following them in the program,” he said. “You can see their progress and improvement by not only the looks on their faces, but by their comments, attitudes, and outlook on life.” The Court’s Benchmark Intervention Program has been, with the assistance of the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office and other community agencies, supervising a rehabilitation program for chemically dependent individuals as well as individuals with serious mental health problems charged with misdemeanor offenses since July 2009. Funding for the establishment and operation of the Intervention Court was initially being supplemented by a Department of Justice Grant, but has, since that date, received the full support of the Ottawa County Commissioners.

The palate is deeply concentrated with silky tannins and a rich, multi-faceted juicy finish. Cameron Confidential: North Coast brands are being bought, sold, and traded lately as vintners struggle to stay ahead of their obligations. The wines we sourced from this deal make up a considerable part of the repositioning of a particular ultra-premium Zinfandel and Zin-based blend producer that was sold a year or so ago. As part of the deal one of the brands was discontinued altogether and we purchased all of those wines and others from the flagship brand as they sought to maintain the high-dollar price point by reducing inventory. This is a classic deal for Cameron Hughes Wine but it’s also a one-time deal as they severely cut back the 2010 contracts, so grab what you can of these incredible values.

The time may come when the skilled nursing facility is the best solution for the proper care of your parents. At this point, you are deciding your parent’s future and where they will live. Here are some talking points and things to consider if that day comes. • WHEN — Many families wait too long to get the skilled nursing help that is needed. Love is making the right decisions and getting the professional care that is needed for the parent. When it is time, approach the process with a positive attitude. • STAFF — Check the turn over rate of the employees. Talk to employees of different levels. The aids, nurses and kitchen staff will each give different perspectives of the environment. Get an overall view. Each will have positive and negative comments but you should sense an overall positive view. Long term staff is a good indication of the maturity and focus that the staff will have toward the patient. There are license requirements relating to the number of staff. Are they temporaries or have they been there awhile?
• PATIENTS — Do not be shocked if you see patients a lot sicker then your mom or dad. You may also see those with mental disabilities. Your parent will have his or her own space and a professional staff will know how to allow all patients to live together with minimal conflict between patients. If your parent will have a roommate ask early on who makes that decision and what are the options if it does not work out. That can be ever changing and you need to know your rights relating to who occupies that room with your loved one. • PHYSICAL VIEW — Is the physical plant comfortable to the eyes and nose? It is not home but there are some facilities that are much more pleasant to visit and live in than others. Listen to your parents but use your senses to make a rational decision. Obviously, cleanliness should be first on the list. • INSPECTIONS — You should visit more than one home. Even if the home is not in the immediate area, use it for comparison. Much can be learned by comparing the facility, the staff and the care. You should visit each facility at least three times. During the day. Talk to the Administrator, the Director of Nursing and social worker. Look at the attention given to the patient and how the employCome see ees work together. Treating more than cavities A Healthy Mouth is Not Optional. It is necessary. Your teeth are more important than you may think. The mouth is a vulnerable internal organ connected to the body by several pathways. It just might be the most difficult organ to maintain, but necessary to keep healthy for a healthier body. Taking care of your mouth is extremely important to your overall health, and is not as simplistic as getting the split ends cut from hair. Several months ago I wrote an article about the link between the health of the mouth and its link to the diseases of the body. I am writing on this subject again, because I believe it is extremely important to understand that an unhealthy mouth (teeth, gums, jawbone, TMJ) can be very detrimental to one’s health and quality of life; it can even be linked to death. A healthy smile does do a body good! Centuries ago, oral infections such as a tooth or gum abscess, more than likely ended in death. Then antibiotics were discovered to treat the infections, decreasing the mortality rate. However, even in the year 2011, some people ignore infections, live with the pain, and try home remedies that more often than not, aren’t fully effective in treating the problem. People, especially the debilitated, still die from oral infections because the bacteria get into the bloodstream and travel throughout the body. I knew a young woman who died from an infection that started with her tooth. A few years ago, the news reported the story of a woman from Colorado, who had a toothache that was worsening. She went to the emergency room and landed in ICU for five days. The doctors did not expect her to survive; but miraculously she did. The origin of the problem was traced back to a gum abscess. Some physical diseases go hand in hand with oral diseases. The old lyric, “The knee bone is connected to the shin bone,” holds true. The mouth is connected to the body. People with diabetes are more than likely to have gum disease. Cardiovascular disease is linked to gum disease. Oral plaque is suspected to contribute to clogged arteries, leading to heart attacks and strokes. Proteins found in infected gum pockets are the same as those found circulating after a heart attack. The inflammation factors in these pockets are the same as those associated with arthritis inflammation. Bacteria from the mouth can be inhaled into the lungs, causing pneumonia. We must keep a healthy balance between good and bad bacteria throughout our bodies, mouth included. Teeth are important to process our food for proper nutrition. They also provide muscular support. When teeth are pulled, but not replaced, the surrounding teeth tip and drift. This causes a misalignment of the jaws that in turn, strains the jaw muscles, which connect to the cartilage of the TMJ. Damage to the joint disk can result. The muscles of the TMJ also connect to the muscles that surround the head. Strain on these muscles causes headaches. The head muscles are connected to the neck muscles, the neck muscles are connected to the back muscles… leg muscles…feet. You can see where I am going with this. Pain elsewhere in the body might be traced back to a mouth problem or vice versa, because everything is connected. When one muscle over compensates for another, things get strained. If you have a broken or chipped tooth, get it checked out. Only your dentist can assess the cause and the need for repair, in order to avoid future infections or TMJ

problems. If it has been a long time since you had a dental exam and cleaning, or never had one, make an appointment. If you have been told that you have gum disease, or if family members have it, it is imperative to see your dentist regularly as advised. We all need help cleaning our teeth, dentists included, because teeth have concavities and grooves where plaque escapes our brushes and floss. Decay and infections can result. A hygienist’s tools are designed to reach these areas. The relationship between the mouth and body is so close, that researchers are working on isolating a factor in the saliva that might be able to detect pancreatic cancer at its early stages. Also, scientists are researching a factor that might tell doctors if a breast tumor is benign or malignant. Stem cell researchers are working with stem cells from the nerve areas of healthy extracted teeth (wisdom teeth, baby teeth) that potentially will grow new organs. Physicians are realizing that oral health is so important that surgeons are sending patients to the dentist for oral health clearance before operations or cancer treatment. So please be diligent about your oral health. It does matter. Be sure to practice good brushing and flossing techniques twice a day. Visit your dentist at least twice a year, more if it is recommended, and ask about the correct techniques to be sure. X-rays are necessary to check for cavities between teeth and under fillings (cavities don’t always hurt). X-rays also reveal abscesses, gum and bone disease, and cancer. They are an important tool to your oral diagnosis, as x-rays are to an orthopedic surgeon. Your dentist is trained to assess how often they are necessary as dictated by your dental and medical history. Without them on a periodic basis, you are not receiving a complete exam and assurance of health. A healthy smile does a body good.

Port Clinton schools rated ‘Excellent’ Staff at the Port Clinton City School District is excited about the results of the 2011 State mandated tests. Once again, Port Clinton High School is rated “Excellent” on the Ohio Graduation Test. PCHS has achieved this rating for the past five years and continues to exceed the required state indicators. PCHS students posted outstanding scores by scoring more than 90 percent in eight of the 10 areas tested and over 80 percent in the other two. Reading and writing were the highest scoring areas with 98.5 percent of 10th graders proficient in reading and 96.9 percent in writing. There were 97.4 percent of 11th grad-
ers proficient in reading and 98.1 percent in writing. Percentages were also over 90 percent for mathematics (both 10th and 11th grades) as well as 11th grade science and social studies. Faculty and students worked hard all year in preparation for the test, even hosting special OGT review sessions. Jefferson Elementary joined PCHS by also achieving the “Excellent” rating for the first time. Improvement was shown overall at Jefferson by making major strides in test scores. “We have concentrated a lot of kindergarten through fifth grade professional development for the past five years target-
ed at increasing student achievement on state mandated tests” said Jack Nitz, who works with the curriculum as Director of Student Services. Grade five scores made the largest strides with the percentage of students proficient in mathematics jumping from 60.9 percent last year to 75 percent in 2011. In grade three, 83.3 percent of students were proficient in reading and 84.2 percent in mathematics (an increase from 80.7 percent in 2010). “The Excellent ratings at Jefferson/Bataan and PCHS are a compliment to the hard work and effort by our teachers and
students,” said Patrick Adkins, Superintendent of Schools. Even though Bataan Memorial Elementary students are not tested they will also receive a rating of Excellent since they are considered a “feeder” school to Jefferson. “The staff has been receptive to new initiatives through professional development and it is starting to pay off,” Adkins said. Banners announcing the “Excellent” ratings were unveiled at the opening staff meetings on Aug. 22 and will be displayed at PCHS and Jefferson.
B-C-S board votes to move forward with levy Board meeting The scheduled meeting of the B-C-S Board of Education will be at 6 p.m. for Aug. 23 at the Board of Education, 11685 W. Ohio 163 with a tour of the facilities. The board meeting will resume at the Board of Education Office at 6:30 p.m.
The Benton-Carroll-Salem School Board voted to put a 3.9 mill emergency levy back on the ballot for the November election. The Board decided not to increase the levy request to account for the additional $1 million in state aid that was cut from the most recent budget. Instead, the loss of state funding will be made up through cuts to both staff and programs.
Superintendent Diane Kershaw presented a plan that would cut an additional $1 million per year by closing two elementary schools and reducing staff by at least 16 employees. The majority of the savings comes from the reduction of staff. Kershaw indicated that she would bring the final plan recommendations to the Aug. 23 board meeting. Treasurer Anne Arnold presented the

and log perch, sheepshead, walleye, gizzard shad, minnows and round gobies, an invasive species. “We wanted to bring the farmers out to see what’s going on in the lake,” said Soil and Water board member and tour participant Jerry Whipple. In addition to the invasive species, another thing plaguing the lake is Harmful Algal Blooms. “This year they are expecting harmful blooms because of a record level of phosphorus,” said John Hageman, who manages Stone Lab. Hageman added that the biggest source of phosphorus is from agriculture. After the on-water testing, tour participants were taken to Gibraltar Island and Ohio State University and Ohio Sea Grant’s Stone Lab. There they heard more about the algae and other issues from Dr. Jeffrey Reutter, Director of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Reutter explained that one of the biggest contributors to phosphorus and nutrient loading in the lake is sedimentation. Rain sweeps the earth and runoff into the water system and that farmland is often loaded with fertilizers and high amounts of phosphorus. “You don’t want to lose it and we don’t want to get it,” Reutter said of the erosion problem.

Another suggestion from Reutter is to test the soil before adding anything. “I’m encouraging the agriculture community to be proactive on this,” Reutter said. Farmers Dave and Lois Fastinger from the Oak Harbor area said they came on the tour to see what’s going on with the algae and to share with other farmers ideas to stop the phosphorus loading. “I enjoy the lake, I don’t want to see it a wreck,” Dave Fastinger said. “It’s not just an effort just by the farmers. Everyone’s got to do it together.” “July is the first month to compare apples to apples. Redskins look to build on best season since 1994 By JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher With 21 lettermen returning, Port Clinton High School head football coach Toby Hammond is hoping to build on a .500 season last year. The Redskin head coach, who has twice taken teams to the state playoffs, has spent the last 7 years trying to re-build the football program that had not experienced a winning season in 17 years … a proud football program that experienced championship seasons in the early 60s and 70s. “Last season we were 5-3 going into our last two games, and folks around here weren’t talking about hurrying up into the basketball season,” said Coach Hammond. “We had a good group of seniors last year most of whom stuck it out through difficult times. We also had a strong group of sophomores who played a lot.” Those sophomores are now juniors and will form a base of what this team
hopes to become in 2011. 21 lettermen is a lot! The question is…can they play? Also, there are a lot of big shoes to fill, particularly at some of the skill positions. Derek Colston was a three year starter at quarterback. Eric Reynolds and Josh Graves were consistent performers as primary targets for Colston. Those players also formed the foundation of the defensive secondary and those areas are the primary concern for Coach Hammond. “We need to find out about and develop players in those areas without a doubt.” Good football teams are built in the offseason, and Toby Hammond says that this was the best winter and spring he has seen since he got here. “We need more commitment in the summertime. Many of our kids have to work to contribute to their families in the summer in this economy,” said the eighth-year head coach. Offensively, the Redskins will
return to the Wing-T offense. Addison Rospert will get the first shot at replacing Derek Colston as the Redskin QB, backed up by Chris Stokes and Andrew Leidheiser. The new receivers will come from a group composed of Steve Wingo, Jacob Carrisales, Joe Escobedo and sophomore Brock Moore. Returning starter Diante Laurel will likely be the featured running back along with Leidheiser, Cody Smith and Jimmy Digby. Rospert may never leave the field since he will also serve as the team’s punter and placekicker. The offensive line is solid. Trey Gluth and Chase Minnier will see lots of time at tight end. Robert Beck and Corey Colston will start at tackle, Nick Leone and Chouinard Stransky will open at the guard positions while Ben Peterson will anchor the line at center. On defense, Coach Hammond’s

REDSKINS from 9A be a 4-3 alignment. The tackles will be Trey Gluth, Chris Oberfield and Brad Hotz. The ends will be Chouinard Stransky, Andrew Leidheiser and Michael Kirkpatrick. Their primary purpose will be to keep the opposing offensive linemen off the linebackers. Jacob Carrisales will be primary among them at middle linebacker, flanked by Cody Smith, Diante Laurel, Chase Minnier and Jimmy Digby. Asked if he had any significant surprises during pre-season camp, Hammond felt the progress he had seen from sophomore Brock Moore was perhaps his biggest surprise. “He really stood out,” said Hammond. So, the question is…can the Redskins build on their first .500 season since 1994? It is safe to say that none of the members of the current team can remember that season since some of them hadn’t even been born yet!

Oak Harbor pushing for postseason play By YANEEK SMITH After going 7-3 last season and missing out on the playoffs by 0.05 of a point, the Rockets hope to get over the proverbial hump this season and qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2007. Coach Mike May enters his fourth season with a 13-17 overall coaching record. In Oak Harbor, the formula for success over the years has been quite simple: 1 — run the ball effectively by establishing control at the line of scrimmage; 2 — play good, stout defense; and 3 — limit turnovers. It worked well for last year’s team, which finished 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the SBC and outscored its opponents 225-128 in the process. However, there are only six returning starters (three on offense, three on defense) from last year’s team. This season, there are 42 players on the varsity squad, 12 of them being seniors. May is encouraged by the hard work that’s been invested by his players thus far during the offseason, noting their commitment to working hard in the weight room
and being well-conditioned coming into practice this summer. Despite having to replace 16 starters, May likes what he has seen thus far. “I like the guys we have com-
peting for these spots,” he said. “I think we’ll be okay with them.” The team will have to replace its share of standout players, as it loses its quarterback (Steve Young), its top-two rushers

Starters return to bigger Danbury Lakers team By J. PATRICK EAKEN For Danbury coach Tim Heffernan, having 27 high school football players on his team would be a disappointment at the school he went to. That’s because Heffernan played his prep football at Cleveland St. Ignatius, where there are more football players in one class, possibly, than there are male students at Danbury High School. It’s not just the 27 players on his varsity team, which is up from under 20 last year that has Coach Heffernan excited. It’s the fact he has nine letter winners, including seven seniors returning, and that includes his entire backfield and receiving corps. “We’re healthy. We only lost two starters off of last year’s team, and we really only replaced two linemen,” Heffernan said. “I feel like we are going the right direction. The seventh and eighth grade has great numbers — up near 30 in those two grades alone. Things are really set and going the right direction. We still have a lot of work to do, but we’ve taken some steps forward.” Varsity returners include AllOhio quarterback Lucas Kennedy, returning wide receiver Cory
Rosters/schedule PAGE 15A Schenk, and backs Cody German and Brandon Bahnsen. Kennedy finished the season with 1,189 yards rushing on 152 carries with 14 touchdowns. He also completed 53-of-117 passes for 871 yards and five touchdowns, plus he caught one touchdown pass. Actually, Kennedy had four catches for 93 yards. “We’re happy to have him back,” Heffernan said. Cory Schenk had 12 catches for 258 yards and four touchdowns, Bahnsen had 30 catches for 497 yards and a touchdown and German had 12 catches for 139 yards. German ran the football 71 times for 198 yards and one touchdown and Bahnsen had 130 yards on 48 carries. This year, Danbury will return to the spread offense, but Heffernan hopes to diversify a little bit. “We ran the spread last year and we are going to try to be a little even-more even handed, at 5050 run-pass for sure,” Heffernan said. Danbury finished the 2010
season 1-8 overall. Two teams in Danbury’s league, the Toledo Area Athletic Conference, continued their seasons in the playoffs — league champion Toledo Christian (Division VI) and Northwood (D-V). Gibsonburg has been added as the eighth member of the TAAC, and Danbury will travel to play the Golden Bears on October 21.
“Gibsonburg is a great addition to the TAAC — there is no question,” Heffernan said. Danbury opens its schedule this Saturday night at Fostoria St. Wendelin, hosts Toledo Woodward on September 2, and then hosts Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic on September 9 to finish its non-league portion of the schedule.

ROCKETS from XA (4.9 per carry) last season, while Young (81-of-157 with 870 yards, 5 TDs) teamed with Burkett (28 catches, 321 yards, 1 TD) and Priesman (23 catches, 262 yards) to form a passing attack that helped to complement the team’s potent ground game. Offensively, the team must replace Scott’s output, and it hopes to do so with running backs Mark Konieczny, a 5-7, 170-pound junior, and Alex Bergman (5-9, 180), a senior. Konieczny saw some time last year at running back and should receive the bulk of the carries this season. May also notes that Brian Mallernee (6-2, 175), the team’s quarterback, will see his share of carries this season, too. Despite being a first-year starter, Mallernee has seen action at quarterback in each of the past two seasons while filling in when Young was injured. One of the three returning starters on offense is center Allen Boss (5-11, 190), who will be a three-year starter. Boss should provide leadership for the offensive line, which will need to open up holes for its running backs. Despite having an effective rushing attack last season, the real key to the Rockets’ success in 2010 was their defense, which allowed just 12.8 points per game. Returning for the defense, which uses a 4-4-3 format, is linebacker Joey Mallernee (6-2, 180), who was a First-Team SBC and First-Team All-Press Selection in 2010. Teaming with Mallernee at linebacker will be his twin brother, Brian, as well as Boss, and several others. Up front, the Rockets will use a variety of players on the defensive line, but the
starters should be Ryan Helle (5-11, 230), Adam Losie (5-9, 230), Dalton Reau (6-1, 245) and Jordan Grodi (5-10, 175). Patrolling the defensive backfield will be Austin Weigand (6-1, 155), Greg Haar (511, 165) and A.J. Cecil (6-0, 175). If the defense can work well together as a unit and hold opponents from scoring touchdowns in the red zone, there’s no reason to believe the Rockets can’t finish with a good record. Oak Harbor received some good news recently when it was told that the football team would be competing in Division IV as opposed to Division III, as they were last season. May notes that the move from Region 10 to Region 14 (which includes Eastwood, Genoa, and Lake) will put the Rockets in a better position to make the playoffs. It will not be easy for the Rockets, that much is for certain. The non-conference portion (at Holland Springfield, Genoa, at Eastwood) of their schedule is tough, and, seeing as they play in a conference, the SBC, that fields its share of good, competitive teams year in and year out, the Rockets will certainly have their work cut out for them. Having a difficult schedule will, however, allow Oak Harbor to score more computer points, helping them in the standings. Oak Harbor begins play on Friday, August 26 when it travels to Holland to face the Springfield Blue Devils. All things considered, May in content with the progress the team has made thus far in the lead-up to the season. “I feel pretty good about where we are (right now).”

Marblehead welcomes wine bar Canoe Club gets warm reception By ANGIE ADAIR ZAM Editor Marblehead’s latest addition, Canoe Club Wine Bar, is filling up fast on Friday nights and firing up pizzas for table service inside and out. The restaurant and bar was opened July 1 by Mark LaGrange, who splits his time between a home in Marblehead and another in Avon. “I just thought the area needed something a little upscale,” he said. “I wanted to do something different.” And for LaGrange, the winetheme is just that. His other bar, Edison’s Pub, is located in the Tremont neighborhood in Cleveland and focuses on beer. All types of alcohol are available at Canoe Club and the bar’s specialty drinks are served up in Ball canning jars to match the homemade chandelier hanging from the ceiling. “My job is to try and fix old buildings and to save them so I’ve always had an interest in eclectic materials,” said LaGrange, who works as restora-
tion contractor in Cleveland. In addition to booze, Canoe Club offers a full menu featuring a variety of simple, small plates instead of large dinners. Wood-fired pizzas come in eight varieties from spinach and artichoke to margarita. Paninis are served up on Tuscan bread and inch-thick buschetta is among the starters. Salads are also a hit as is the S’mores dessert straight from the brick oven. Adjacent to the bar is a gallery space that according to LaGrange is a work in progress. His hope is to that eventually guests can get a glass of wine and wander through that space before or after their meal on the restaurant side. LaGrange is hoping to add other entertainment features as well such as pizza making classes, wine tastings and a Sunday brunch featuring a bloody Mary bar. For now though, the Canoe Club is only open for dinner. “It’s been excellent,” LaGrange said of the new venture. “We’ve had a really good reception.”

It’s time to brush up on your investment education
You don’t need to have young children to be keenly aware that we’ve reached that “back-to-school” time of year. Whether you’re shopping for school supplies or not, you may want to take a cue from this season to think about getting a little more education yourself — specifically, investment education. Many people find the language of investing to be confusing, but with a little effort, you can learn important concepts and principles. And the more you know about investing, the better off you’ll be because, in the investment world as in other areas of life, knowledge is power. So take just a few minutes to read more on these basic investment concepts: • Growth — You purchase some types of investments with the hope that their value will rise over time. Of course, over the short term, the prices of growth-oriented investments can and will fluctuate, sometimes substantially, and the preservation of your principal is not guaranteed.
• Income — When you invest in income-oriented or fixed-income vehicles, you receive income in the form of interest payments. The market value of fixed-income investments can also fluctuate, but if you hold them until maturity, you can generally expect to receive the original principal value. • Investment risk — When most people talk about investment risk, they are usually referring to the possibility of losing money — and that is indeed an ever-present risk. But all investments carry some type of risk. When you invest in fixed-income investments, for example, you may incur interest rate risk — the risk that the value of your investment will drop if interest rates rise. Or you may encounter purchasing power risk — the risk that your rate of return may not keep up with inflation. • Risk tolerance — Generally speaking, your risk tolerance refers to what type of investor you are. If you’re an aggressive investor, you may be willing to accept greater risk in exchange for potentially higher
returns, whereas if you’re a conservative investor, you’ll take lower returns if you can receive greater preservation of principal. • Time horizon — Your investment strategy will be partially based on your time horizon — the number of years in which you plan to invest. Your time horizon will likely stretch into your retirement years. • Diversification — Diversification is an important factor in investment success. By spreading your investment dollars among an array of investment vehicles, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio, although diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. While far from exhaustive, this list of investment terms can help you gain a clearer understanding of the “nuts and bolts” of investing — and perhaps encourage you to further your investment “education.” nnn

Chelle Blausey named business manager for ORSI Ottawa Residential Services Inc. is pleased to announce Chelle Blausey as its new Business Manger. After graduating from Terra Community College with an associates degree in accounting, Blausey began her career with ORSI 12 years ago when she was hired as a part-time accounting specialist. She continued to enhance her skills and build her career with ORSI as the Housing Operations Manager. Through this position, Blausey received certifications in Tenant/Landlord Law, Fair Housing and became a HUD-Certified Housing Occupancy Specialist. While employed as ORSI’s Housing Manager, she was in charge of overseeing 106 rent units throughout Ottawa County. It was her sole role to work with tenants, lease units, partner with the social service agencies as needed, collaborate with the Ottawa County Board of DD to develop a long term housing plan
for persons in need of housing, as well as operate the application and eligibility process of the Tenant Based Rental Assistance Program for both Ottawa County and the City of Port Clinton. Along with these responsibilities, Blausey served as a liaison to the Ottawa County Housing Authority to continuously assist in bringing portable Housing Choice Vouchers to Ottawa County. As the availability of funding decreases and the need for services increase, ORSI, like many non-profit agencies struggles to find the balance; Blausey has brought fresh ideas and a new perspective to her role as business manager to assist in achieving that balance. Through implementation of new systems and processes, she has assisted ORSI in stabilizing during trying financial times. ORSI’s Board of Director’s is pleased with Blausey in her new role and looks forward to a long working relationship.

Grand marshal named for perch parade The Marblehead Peninsula Lions Club has selected David B. King as grand marshal of this year’s Perch Festival parade to be held Aug. 27. King moved to the Marblehead area from Columbus Grove Ohio in 1988 to serve as the vice president of The Marblehead Bank. The bank promoted him to president in 1992 and he will continue to serve in that capacity until his retirement scheduled for October. King has also been a member of the Lions Club for 30 years, holding the positions of treasurer, tail twister, vice president, president and director. He served on the committee for the first Perch Festival Parade and continued working with the committee for many years thereafter. King was also involved with the local chamber of commerce and served
as the basketball scoreboard operator at Danbury High School for about 19 years. While banking is his profession, farming, antique tractors and antique machinery are his passion. King drove his tractor in several parades and his engines were on display at past Perch Festivals. Upon retirement, he plans to move back to the Columbus Grove area to be near his two children where he will pursue his agricultural passions. He is also looking forward to spending time with his wife, Dinah, watching their three grandchildren in sporting and 4-H events.
