City unveils upgrades The City of Port Clinton held an open house at the Wastewater Treatment facilities last week. Mayor Debbie HymoreTester kicked off the event that showcased the treatment plant’s upgrades and new technology. Residents and guests were provided tours of the 2 MGD average flow/4 MGD peak flow wastewater treatment plant facility. Phase 1 of the multi-year project included a new head works building, improved screening, influent pumping, compaction and grit washing processes, odor control unit, a new process building with ACTIFLOW process equipment, grit separators, secondary pumping, chemical storage and chemical feed equipment. The city also purchased a sewage sludge press to process the sludge as the volume increased. These improvements allowed the plant facility to treat 24 MGD during a storm event. Phase 2 included the demolition of some existing onsite structures. Additionally, Phase 2 included piping modifications, raising the height of the chlorine contact tanks, modifying the secondary treatment clarification units, conversion of the anaerobic digester to aerobic digestion, construction of a solids handling building and maintenance shop. The sludge press was then relocated to the new solids building. Working with Floyd Browne Group engineers, the city of Port Clinton has made each of these improvements with the intent of reducing odor from the wastewater treatment facilities and ensuring that all effluent from the plant is in compliance with Ohio Environmental Protection Agency regulations. Most importantly, the facility improvements have resulted in a community-wide wastewater treatment and collection system which keeps the city environmentally healthy.

This has been a most interesting season for mid-term election year. Ottawa County has always been one of those bellwether places leading the national trends, so our election results will be most interesting. Next Tuesday is election day, so, if you can’t get to the Board of Elections to vote early, get to your polling place and make your voice be heard. Remember, if you don’t vote, you lose your right to complain! n
