First food and wine fair Saturday at Bassett’s Vendors will be on site with samples and coupons Now that Halloween has come and gone, it’s time to start thinking about the coming Holiday season. In line with that idea, The Beacon, along with WPCR Internet radio and Bassett’s Market have partnered to present the first annual North Coast Holiday Food & Wine Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at Bassett’s Market. Some 20 Bassett’s vendors will

be providing free food samples and special coupons all day long at this special event. Admission will be one (or more) canned or non-perishable food item to be donated to the Ottawa County Holiday Bureau and the “Fish and Loaves” organization in Bellevue. Among the vendors providing displays and samples of their products will be: Kaito Foods,

Tank’s Meats, Gerber, NOO Beverage, Keystone, Keebler, CocaCola, Euclid Fish, Gentle Bens, Nash Brothers/Trading, Murray Brokerage, Paramount Coffee, Heidelberg, Hammer, Heineman’s and Stanley Meats. There will also be tables featuring other retailers located in the Knoll Crest Shopping Center, including Desdemona’s and Newport Dry Goods.

Election results are in By ANGIE ADAIR Editor The state will see some changes after Tuesday’s election but for Ottawa County, things remain mostly the same. Ottawa County Commissioner Jim Sass retained his seat after a challenge from Genoa minister Tim Davies. “You’re stuck with me for another four years,” said Sass to cheers from the small crowd gathered at Port Clinton Yacht Club Tuesday. Sass, a Democrat from Portage Township, defeated Davies 8,628 to 6,912 according to unofficial results from the Ottawa County Board of Elections. “I’m just relieved and glad it’s over. I’m ready to get back to work,” said Sass. JoEllen Regal, who ran unopposed to keep her position as county auditor, dramatically wiped her brow as the results came in. “It was a touch campaign,” she joked.

It takes hundreds of volunteers to sort and pack the thousands of food and other essential items that are donated to the Holiday Bureau every year for individuals and families right here in Ottawa County. The all-volunteer-operated Ottawa County Holiday Bureau provides direct assistance to people in need during the Christmas holiday season. Food on the table everyday, mittens and hats for our kids, fresh fruits and vegetables — what many of us take for granted — isn’t what every household experiences. But, in mid-December, because of heartfelt giving by residents, schools and businesses in Ottawa County, individuals and families in need are given food, daily living items and toys, mittens and hats. In partnership with the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots, in 2009 the Holiday Bureau brightened the lives of 914 families — 2,827 people, 50 percent of whom are under 18 — right here in Ottawa County. That total is 7 percent of the population.
