City getting ready for winter By DEBBIE HYMORE-TESTER Port Clinton Mayor To the citizens of Port Clinton: it is hard to believe another year is coming to an end. We the Administration, hope you all are enjoying the new street, sewer and water improvements throughout our community. Mother Nature was certainly on our side in helping us bring this project near completion. This spring, the Kwest Group will

return to complete the restoration of this project. We thank all of you again for your patience through this process. nnn

The city crews have been busy with leaf pickup, along with putting up the snow fence, which is getting us ready for Old Man Winter. nnn

Our Community Christmas was a little different this year. The location

was downtown, in hopes of sparking shopping for our local merchants. They served very good cookies and hot chocolate (just ask my grandkids and nephew)! The beautiful voices of the Fostoria Lake Plains Chorus (barbershop), the French Club and Touch of Class from the high school really enhanced the celebration. I would like to thank the Main Street promotional committee and the Port Clinton Chamber for having

a jolly man in a red suit named Santa that was at Mango Mama’s. This truly put smiles on many children and some adult’s faces. I would also like to thank the interim Safety Service Director Tracy Colston and the Port Clinton Fire and the Police departments for the parade to the Adams Street gazebo. nnn

WINTER BLAST

By ANGIE ADAIR ZAM Editor Port Clinton’s annual Walleye Madness at Midnight was chosen as one of America’s Top 10 Quirkiest New Year’s Eve Events by editors at TripAdvisor. According to the travel website — www.tripadvisor.com — “This unique New Year’s Eve celebration includes games, fireworks and the dropping of a 20-foot, 600-pound walleye fish named Wylie at midnight. Attendees can warm up with walleye-themed food and drink, including walleye chowder, and a local wine specialty called,

Snow and cold temperatures kept kids out of school a few days this week but it didn’t keep them from venturing outside. This pair is ready to hit Taft Hill just before sunset Monday afternoon.

Hot Jobs list for Ottawa County:

B-C-S students shop local for the holidays Students at a few Benton-Carroll-Salem elementary schools got a chance to buy gifts last week for friends and family at a Santa Shop featuring all local products. The Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce, at its October board meeting, unanimously agreed to support the “buy local” concept for Rocky Ridge and Graytown elementary schools’ Santa Shops. Joe Wank, principal of the schools, first proposed the concept to

the board over the summer and revisited the request at the October meeting, where he asked board members for their support in contacting and encouraging local businesses to participate in the schools’ Santa Shops this year. The premise, he explained, is that instead of some out-of-state vendor selling cheaply made, lower quality trinkets to students for their parents and grandparents, lo-

Tell Tales

I brought home more than arts and crafts ... I was just going out to the Christmas on Catawba arts and craft Show last Saturday to take a few pictures. I remembered it was also a fundraiser for the Humane Society. We lost our beloved pet dog back in August and, well, we were just blown away by this cute dude. So we have adopted him. The Humane Society shelter at the corner of Sand and Christie Chapel roads has lots of adorable dudes just like the one we got. What a perfect Christmas gift!

The Mitten Tree ornaments were picked up last week by the Holiday Bureau. Once again, we had well over 100 mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and caps donated by folks in the community to help keep heads, hands and hearts warm this winter. My thanks to all who contributed this year to our Mitten Tree.
