KINDERCOOKING
Kids share favorite recipes
Each year, the kindergarten children of Immaculate Conception School in Port Clinton, Ohio dictate their favorite food recipes to their teacher, Pat Seibert. The Beacon publishes them. They are printed here to be shared with their families and friends. Lindsey Kaufman started this process 27 years ago. Seibert picked up the project 23 years ago. Can you tell when little eyes and ears are paying attention? Sometimes they can surprise you. They may notice things you take for granted and not notice others. This may be their first published work, but it won’t be their last! All it takes is a little encouragement for them to express themselves. Move over, Rachael Ray!

Danbury’s Wellness Committee continues fight against obesity By ROBERTA REDFERN Beacon Correspondent Danbury Elementary children are getting up and getting motivated these days, as the school’s Wellness Committee continues to work on the health of its students. “Kids in Motion” is a program started by elementary physical education teacher Nan Sauber and the school’s nurse, Allison Holzaepfel. It is the second big diet and exercise program put on by the school in an effort to teach children a healthy lifestyle and get childhood obesity numbers down. “We have kids who come every day, and it’s great to see,” Sauber said. “They love running relays, with activities thrown in.” From 8 to 8:20 a.m. daily, first- through fourth-grade students trickle into the school’s gym to start their school day with exercise. Sauber, who teaches the program with the exception of Thursdays — when Laura Tyson comes in to teach an aerobic dance class — mixes it up with cardiovascular, games and muscle work.
Sauber has been getting 25-30 kids a day, which only dropped recently because of the cold and the start of a school reading program. Sauber is pleased with the outcome, only wishing that if they had some kind of transportation for students, the attendance numbers would increase. There are no tangible prizes for the children; no incentives. “We thought about giving out a prize. In our world of education, it’s always about ‘what am I going to get if I do this.’ These kids come because they want to and as an educator, that’s really refreshing,” Sauber said. The school’s Wellness Committee punched things into high gear last spring when health department figures showed that in Ottawa County, Danbury had the highest overweight and obese rates — 47 percent up from 39 percent three years prior. Countywide, two out of five students fell above the healthy weight range for their age when a study of more than 2,300 local students was done in fall 2009. In an attempt to be a healthy example,

You put eight noodles in a pan. Then you put cheese in there. Then you turn the heat thing on to 70. Sometimes my mom cooks it for 80 minutes. Then you probably eat it. I think there’s some water in it and some sauce. I eat mine with sprinkle cheese.

36 teachers and other staff members teamed up in a 10-week diet and exercise contest tailored after the popular television show “The Biggest Loser.” On the show, overweight contestants compete against each other by dieting and working out in an effort to lose unwanted pounds. Less than two weeks ago President Obama signed into law the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which will authorize funding for federal school meal
You get one of those big measuring cups. You put two eggs in soil. You get a half cup of powder and put it in the big measuring cup. You put water in up to about three. You mix it up and pretty soon it will be raw eggs. You put it in a pan and cook it up. Wait for it to get the brown stuff on it, and that’s it! I can eat a lot of them, they are so great! I love ‘em! I put syrup and peanut butter on them.

Free cats for Christmas I received an awful lot of comments about the puppy we got from the Humane Society. Did you know they have free cats? I dropped in at the shelter to get my new puppy some shots last week and had a chance to wander through. Boy, do they have nice friendly cats everywhere. Think about it. Remember, the Ottawa County shelter does not euthanize the animals. nnn
Next week is my annual “New Year … 10-year Predictions” about things happening in Ottawa County. The sad part is I can’t use the Port Clinton boys’ basketball team going to state any more. It already happened. Every now and then, one of my predictions comes true despite the fact that most of my predictions are either tongue in cheek sarcastic, or just wishful thinking. Either way, I always have a little fun with it. If you have any

We had a little mental mix-up two weeks ago when we hid Wylie in a photograph on page 6A. He was not in an ad! I think we have that problem corrected now, so congratulations to our Find Wylie contest winner this week, Lee Toyrek, from Dublin, who found Wylie in the ad for Gabriel and Anthony’s Spa on page 8A last week. Lee wins a $20 gift/gas card from Friendship Convenience Stores. We’ll be hiding Wylie again this week, if you find him, just drop us a note at our office at Beacon Place on Southeast Catawba Road or click on the Find Wylie icon at www.thebeacon.net. nnn
