TellTales BY JOHN SCHAFFNER
I received a note from old friend and classmate Dick Mullins, who provided us with the information for our Memorial Day story on Bill Matthews, the first local resident who was killed in action in Vietnam. Now we learn that our story was read by another former local, Dan Rupp, who lives in southern Indiana. Rupp was inspired to do a wood carving of the portrait of Bill Matthews. He made one for both of Bill’s brothers and donated one to the VFW for the William Matthews Jr. Pavilion. ——— We had 109 correct entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Our winner is Valerie Pines of Wellington, Ohio, who correctly found Wylie in the NOMS ad on page 5A last week. Valerie wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Convenient Stores. We’ll hide Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop us a note at our office or click on the Find Wylie icon online at www.thebeacon.net. ——— Many of us remember the amazing Lindsay Kaufman, who was an educator extraordinaire in Port Clinton. I got a note this week from Cathy Greene that Lindsay now lives in the Dominican Republic and works for a mission there. She is now directly involved with the relief effort in Haiti leading a team of doctors and paramedics in treating the earthquake victims. If anyone wants to donate to their efforts, they can go to www.dominicancrossroads.com. ——— Tom Ganley, a Cleveland auto dealer and candidate for the U.S. Senate will be the speaker for the Fourth Thursday Republican Lunch Bunch on Jan. 28 at the Port Clinton Elks Lodge. All are welcome and the cost of the noon lunch is $10. Also, Ohio Republican Gubernatorial candidate John Kasich will be the featured speaker at the Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca Lincoln Day Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. Tickets are $35 and available by calling 419-898-6874 or 419-360-6874. ——— Congratulations to the following honor roll students at THE Ohio State University: Jamie Que, Jessica Sheppard, Lindsay Tisza and Alexandria Underwood, all of Port Clinton. ——— Last week we told you about John Waite being honored with the Oliver True Award at Port Clinton Yacht Club. Unfortunately, his cancer has worsened and treatments have become a real financial burden on John’s family. His friends have organized a Spaghetti Dinner Benefit from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at PCYC. Chef Dick Renn will be preparing the spaghetti featuring his original sauce. The public is invited. Cost for the meal is $12. There will also be a silent auction during dinner followed by a little rock ’n’ roll with the Travelin’ Lounge Lizards at 8 p.m. ——— Services this Sunday at Peace Lutheran in Port Clinton will be a little out of the ordinary. Pastor Mike Wiechers will be welcoming “To the Glory,” a puppet ministry out of Bellevue. This company of professional puppeteers will be presenting four vignettes especially written for the youth of the congregation. A free-will offering will be accepted. Following 9 a.m. services, the puppeteers will be staying on for Sunday School. The high school ELMS youth group will be preparing and serving a special “Flapjacks with Friends” breakfast for the youngsters and their new friends.

Bassett's Market serving as donation collection site
Helping Haiti
Bassett’s Market, the United Way and WPCR Port Clinton Radio have teamed up to help Haiti. Last week’s earthquake has left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands in need of everything from water to medical supplies. This weekend, locals are getting a chance to join in the worldwide response. Bassett’s Market will serve as an ISOH/IMPACT disaster relief collection site. ISOH/IMPACT, which according to its Web site is “a community based non-profit, tax-exempt, charitable organization whose mandate is devoted to ensuring a brighter future for children,” will make two pickups from the Portage Township store. The items will then be taken to the warehouse in Waterville before being sent to Pensac-

The Salvation Army-Port Clinton Service Unit is saying a big thank you this post holiday season. Ottawa County brought in $52,908.22 for this year’s Red Kettle campaign — almost $8,000 more than the goal. According to director Maureen Saponari, the volunteers are responsible for the success. In a press release, Saponari said: “We could not have accomplished this task if not for all the countless hours of volunteers and donations. Thanks to all involved, including the hard work and dedication from all the bell ringing volunteers, Port Clinton Advisory Board, the staff at Huntington Bank, who provided all the banking needs and the wonderful owners and staff at the seven ‘ringing’ locations: Bassett’s, Community Market PC/Oak Harbor, Kroger, Miller’s Market/Genoa and Wal-Mart. And a special thanks to residents of Ottawa County who volunteered for the first time and took the challenge of our economy at heart by pulling together to make this unreachable goal, reachable.” The Port Clinton Service Unit also would like to thank all involved the Coats for Families program, which has currently provided over 848 Ottawa County residents with warm winter coats. The Beacon — with it’s mitten tree — News Herald, Executive Cleaners, Howard Hanna and local residents all make this program a great success. The annual Toy and Food Drive was also a hit. The project, in collaboration with The Holiday Bureau and Toys for Tots, distributed more than 4,500 toys to more than 1,676 children. Again, this was made possible by the group effort of the community and businesses allowing The Salvation Army to put our boxes out for distribution, the generous response from the community to donate toys and Mon Ami’s “Annual Tree A Rama,” with all proceeds going to the purchase of toys.
