Have you ever seen the handful of houses in the Rye Beach neighborhood that are constructed using a strange-looking, porous rock and wondered what exactly it was? The rock is called tufa. Tufa is a porous rock formed by the deposition of calcium carbonate from supersaturated water. According to Mike Angle, a geologist with the Ohio Division of Geological Survey, tufa and its sister, marl, are “a bit of an enigma for geologists to classify.” These rocks differ from all other bedrocks in Ohio because, unlike limestone and other bedrocks that are millions of years old, they are still being formed. Tufa, a soft, volcanic-looking rock that ages and hardens in the sun, is essentially a porous deposit of calcium carbonate. “It will form anywhere where ground water is super-saturated with calcium carbonate” states retired Ohio geologist, Nate Fuller. When the precipitation of the calcium carbonate occurs underground, marl is formed. When it precipitates out above ground, tufa is formed. Upon settling, the carbonate encrusts those objects with which it comes in contact. Large deposits of tufa and marl are fairly rare and not very widespread; yet, small quantities of tufa rock can be found throughout western and northern Ohio. Deposits of tufa and marl are associated with areas containing caves or caverns and/or seeps or springs along relatively steep slopes and valleys. In Ohio, the largest deposits of tufa were traditionally found at White’s Landing, the Resthaven Wildlife area just northeast of

Castalia, and the area around Miller’s Blue Landing and other areas, including Huron’s Hole, all in Erie County near Sandusky Bay. Rye Beach neighborhood and the Catawba In all areas where it occurs, the majority of Cliffs neighborhood, the tufa/marl was used

the tufa and marl has been mined. At Resthaven, the largest deposit in the state, tufa/ marl initially covered an area of about 3,500 acres and averaged six feet deep. This area was mined extensively in the early 1900s by the Portland Cement Company of Sandusky for use in their cement products. At White’s

EHOVE’s got talent It’s clear that EHOVE students have talent. About a dozen students found the courage to perform at the school’s Talent Show in front of their fellow classmates on February 17. There was something for everyone with jazz and hip hop dance performers and singers performing country and pop songs. Before the show, EHOVE staff and teachers put on a fun skit that warmed up the audience. EHOVE Forensics student Haley Olds (Monroeville High School) rocked the crowd with EHOVE Talent her first place singing perfor- Show First Place mance. Auto Tech student Shan- winner-Forennon Murphy (Perkins High sics student HalSchool) took second place with ey Olds (Monrohis guitar-playing and singing eville H.S.) performance, while Teacher Academy student Claire Woodburn (Huron High School) song and piano playing gave her the third place prize. While awaiting the results, the students were entertained with a surprise EHOVE Talent Show appearance by The Blues Second Place Win- Brothers (actually instrucner-Auto Tech stu- tors Chef Michael Edwards dent Shannon Mur- and Social Studies teacher Ed Sennish) who danced phy (Perkins H.S.) through the aisles teasing students with Super Soakers. But the crowd went wild when they got to vote for one of three blindfolded participants to get a pie in the face. Principal Rod Smith received the most votes and earned plenty of cheers as The Blues Brothers smashed the pie in his face. Videos of all the performances can be seen on EHOVE’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/ EHOVEworks. Plenty of photos can also be found EHOVE Talent Show at EHOVE’s Facebook Third Place WinnerAcademy page at www.facebook. Teacher student Claire Woodcom/EHOVEworks. burn (Huron H.S.)

Huron Residents Must File Income Tax with R.I.T.A. The City of Huron has contracted with the Regional Income Tax Agency (R.I.T.A.) to begin collecting the municipal income tax, effective December 1, 2010. All Huron residents should have received an Individual Municipal Income Tax Return Form 37 in the mail this January in order to accommodate submission for the April 18, 2011 filing date. Replacement forms can be obtained at the Tax Office in City Hall, the Huron Public Library, or on-line at www. ritaohio.com. On August 10, 2010 Huron City Council adopted Ordinance No. 2010-29 authorizing R.I.T.A. to provide income tax processing for City Income Tax Returns. The nonprofit governmental agency offers residents and businesses free e-filing and payment, customer service support by phone, round the clock on-line support and a downloadable Auto-Calculate Form that assists with the tax preparation process. At minimum, the only change a Huron taxpayer may notice will be the location in which the tax returns are processed. If mailing a return, the proper address must be used. Tax returns are no longer accepted at the Finance & Tax Department in City Hall. Payments must be mailed to: Regional Income Tax Agency, PO Box 6600, Cleve-
