Huron firefighters participated in a ground and aerial ladder training evolution on June 7 at the Cole’s Training Center in Milan. During the evolutions, firefighters ascended and descended through different situations while carrying tools and managing their air supply in a continuous ladder maze consisting of multiple ladders. This training was intended to simulate the strenuous work and required the techniques that would be used at structural fire scenes.
Huron firefighters participated in a rope rescue training scenario recently at Kalahari. The realistic, but simulated exercise required rescuers to lower the victim from one of the four newly constructed zip-line towers.
Help Needed at Woodlands Children’s Garden
Thank You Huron Lagoons Marina
The Woodlands Children’s Garden is in dire need of some weeding and thinning of perennials. The garden is very large, and much help is needed. A community work day is planned for this Saturday, Sept. 18, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Gloves, shovels, and other garden tools will be provided. If anyone who can bring a wheelbarrow, it would be quite helpful. For more information, contact Lisa Yako at 419-4336233.

2010 Street Resurfacing Program ANDY WHITE, CITY MANAGER At its regular meeting Tuesday, September 14, 2010 the City Council authorized 7L Construction to complete the 2010 Road Paving Program. In May the city retained the Mannik & Smith Group to provide civil engineering and project management for the annual program. In total eight streets (Williams Street, Shirley Street, Mill Street, Huron Street, Tyler Street, Paris Street, Stedman Street and Riverside Drive) were selected for improvement and a project budget was set at $660,000.00. On Friday, September 10, 2010 a total of four bids were received by the city and 7L Construction was identified as the low bidder at $373,808.57, the high bid was $458,011.50. In

total the low bid represents a 44% reduction in the estimated project total. The current economy and industry status has generally supported a 20% - 30% reduction in costs for similar type projects this year. The timing of the city’s bid advertisement at the end of the construction season when work volumes are slowed is an additional factor in the cost reduction. A policy governing the use of the $286,191.43 in realized savings will be discussed this fall by the Council. The funds could be encumbered and used for additional paving work this fall and next spring or to retire existing debt. The city is considering an expansion of the Williams Street resurfacing project to include the replacement of a water distribution main for

the segment between Bogart Road to the south and the railroad crossing to the north. The water portion of the proposed project would be financed through the water capital projects fund and require affected property owners to pay an assessment. The resurfacing would be paid for through the realized savings from the 2010 resurfacing program. A formal decision is expected later this fall. A preconstruction meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 20, 2010 at City Hall. The meeting is open to the public and interested residents are directed to the City Manager’s office for additional information. Correspondence describing traffic impacts will be distributed after the preconstruction meeting.
