Parks & Rec Hosts Annual Pumpkin Event The Third Annual Huron Pumpkin Fest will be held from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Huron Boat Basin and Amphitheater. Entertainment scheduled throughout the day at the Amphitheater will include Heller Magic, an exciting magic and illusion act, Jungle Terry’s safari animal show, and more. A petting zoo will also be open to visitors all day. Visitors are encouraged to check out the craft tent that will be there, courtesy of Just Like Home Childcare and the Jumping Beans Bounce House. Stop by “My Mother’s Mar-
ket” for cooking demonstrations, kids’ obstacle course, and mums and pumpkins for purchase. The Touch-A-Truck activity is always a hit with kids; they can get in and explore some of their favorite vehicles. A scarecrow decorating contest is open to all, and ideally a family project – all materials will be supplied by the parks & rec department. And, of course, one of the favorite events of the fest is the Barnes Nursery Pumpkin Drop. A schedule for the event follows: Noon – Festival opens

formation to be passed along quickly. Both locations were carefully selected due to the amount of travel along those routes. Barnes Nursery graciously donated the landscaping around both of the signs.

Huron Schools Welcome New Teachers The Huron City School District is pleased to announce the hiring of five new teachers for the 2010-2011 school year. Congratulations to Janelle Bollinger, Amy Brown, Kyle Hammond, Mary James, and Stefanie Lee as they have begUn the 2010-2011 school year. Janelle Bollinger Bollinger has joined the teaching force at Woodlands Intermediate School this fall as an Intervention Specialist. This year marks Ms. Bollinger’s first year as a full-time teacher. Ms. Bollinger had completed her Student Teaching at Roosevelt Elementary in Hubbard, Ohio, and has also substituted in the ClydeGreen Springs School District and the Hopewell BOLLINGER Loudon Local School District. Bollinger is very enthusiastic about her new position. “I plan on seeking out and utilizing feedback from students to reflect on my teaching practices and strategies,” said Bollinger. She also plans to add to the classroom management and intervention strategies by working with parents, colleagues, support staff and supervisors. When not in school, Ms. Bollinger enjoys shopping, reading, and watching athletic activities, such as, baseball, basketball and football. Bollinger is very appreciative of the support she has received not only from her mentor, Karen Lamb, but the entire Woodlands staff. Bollinger is a Niles, Ohio native. She graduated from Youngstown State University in December of 2009. She moved to the Huron area in January of 2010 after becoming engaged to her fiancé. ing eighth-grade Language Arts. Mrs. Brown comes to the Huron District with several years experience. She has taught Physical Education and Reading Intervention at St. Peter’s School over the past six years. When asked about her goals Brown replied, “to improve student achievement in reading and to provide opportunities for students to increase their sense of academic responsibility.” BROWN When Mrs. Brown is not in school, she enjoys spending time with her family, exercising and sports. Mrs. Brown was very complimentary of the staff and students of McCormick Junior High. Kyle Hammond Hammond is also a new staff member at McCormick Junior High. He has accepted the position of an Intervention Specialist. Mr. Hammond brings with him an additional year of experience. He taught in the Fremont City Schools as an Intervention Specialist. “My goal for the 2010-2011 school year is to have all of my students reach their maximum potential,” said HAMMOND Hammond. In addition to his position at McCormick, Mr. Hammond will also be the Freshman Boys Basketball Coach later this year. Mr. Hammond has been very impressed with the hard-working and well behaved students. He also has been very appreciative of the Huron staff, as they have been very welcoming and helpful to him. James comes to Huron from Bellevue Junior High having taught seventh-grade Science and eighth-grade Technology Education. Her goals for the school year include: a smooth transition into her new position, getting to know her students and to help them become successful in both Science and school. Outside of school Mrs. James enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. She enJAMES joys reading and traveling and also works part-time for the Eye Team Optical in Sandusky. The school year has started off very well for James. She has enjoyed meeting her new colleagues, getting to know her students, and many members of the community. “I am happy to be a part of the education system in Huron and I look forward to many great school years ahead,” said James. Stefanie Lee Stefanie Lee has joined the teaching staff at Huron High School. Lee is the ninth-grade English teacher. She comes to Huron High School from Margaretta High School in Castalia. Her goals for the 2010-2011 school year include getting acclimated to her new position and to make a difference at HHS. When not in school, Lee enjoys spending time with her husband, running, playing sports and looks LEE forward to coaching the Girls JV Basketball Team. “It has had a wonderful start (to the school year) and the students have been great,” said Lee.
