Huron Student Tells of Experiences in Finland Josh Battiste, A Huron Rotary Exchange Stu- Finnish in our native tongue. We slowly went through the basics, like numdent who is living in Finland for this school year, wrote this letter to his dad, Bob Battiste, bers and greetings, and all the while we were and Huron Rotarian Tony Samaniego describing his first week there. He is sponsored by the Huron Rotary Club thru a Rotary International Exchange Program. The Rotary Club will periodically provide letters he writes to the Huron Hometown News to keep everyone informed of his progress. For more information regarding the Rotary Exchange Program, contact the club at www.huronrotary.org. Dear Tony and Dad, Attached are pictures of some friends and me from the Language Camp, unfortunately I haven’t found time to upload my own photos, so there are only a few.

In the language camp there were 114 people from countries all over the world. America, Canada, Taiwan, Japan, China, Germany, France Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, France, Belgium, and India were all represented. We were broken into groups in an attempt to teach us
experiencing Finnish culture. We went to sauna 3 times (note that it is pronounced SOW-na, not SA-na) and it is one of the greatest things I have ever experienced. We also got more accustomed to the many meals; breakfast, lunch, coffee, dinner and evening snack, and all were very healthy. As our lessons progressed, I made tons of

friends whom I know I will stay in contact with my whole life. The only bad part about the language camp was leaving all the friends I had made. The consolation was, of course, the friends I would make in my new hometown. I have already made tons of friends, so many that I’m having trouble keeping up with all the names. My friends are eager to include me and none of the “Finnish shyness” has been apparent to me. I’ve found that once you are included in a group, you treat everyone like a brother or a sister... a genuine closeness that you can’t find in the U.S. Sure we have our hospitality and we aren’t typically shy, but that’s just because of the novelty of someone new being there. So far I have had a blast in Finland and have enjoyed all of my experiences so far. At this point I can’t imagine that I will be able to step on the plane at the end of the year. Thanks to all the Rotarians, Josh Battiste
Surface Water Advisories Continue Due to the presence of algal toxins found within the water of a number of inland lakes across Ohio and Lake Erie, Ohio EPA, Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Ohio Department of Health are releasing a comprehensive list of updated sampling results for algal toxins including microcystin, anatoxin-a, cylindrospermopsin and saxitoxin. All state parks remain open. During a sixth round of sampling last week, no algal toxins were detected in the treated drinking water at 11 public drinking water systems whose water comes from western Lake Erie. Public drinking water systems being sampled weekly by Ohio EPA are: Huron, Sandusky, Toledo, Oregon, Carroll Township (in Ottawa County), Ottawa County Regional Water, Marblehead, Kelleys Island, Camp Patmos (Kelleys Island), Put-in-Bay, and Lake Erie

Utilities (Middle Bass Island). In the raw (untreated) water, trace levels of microcystin was detected at two of the systems: Carroll Township, with 0.67 parts per billion (ppb); and Ottawa County Regional, with 0.28 ppb. Ohio EPA will continue to conduct sampling at these systems while the blue-green algae bloom persists on the lake. Ohio EPA is consulting with the affected water supplies to make sure their treatment processes are being optimized to be as effective as possible in removing toxins. Algal toxins in drinking water are not currently regulated by Ohio EPA or U.S. EPA. World Health Organization guidelines consider levels below 1.0 ppb in treated drinking water a minimal health risk.
