By Lisa Yako For the past 25 years, Dr. Carlyn Sebastian, DDS, has practiced dentistry with colleagues around Ohio. However, Dr. Sebastian, a graduate of the dental program at Creighton University, Nebraska, has now opened her own practice in Huron. Sebastian Dental, located at 204 Cleveland Road W, officially opened its doors for business on March 1. For the past 7 years, Dr. Sebastian has been treating patients at the Ohio Veteran’s Home (OVH) in Sandusky. The OVH proved to be a valuable and unique professional experience for Dr. Sebastian, teaching her that many people just want you to hold their hand and be there to listen. Because of these very personal experiences in patient care, Dr. Sebastian is committed to scheduling one-hour appointments so her patients never feel rushed, and offer her adequate time to provide that one-on-one relationship that is mostly absent from the medical field today. According to office manager, Jennifer Sanders, the family of the veterans and employees at the OVH saw that Dr. Sebastian “has compassion and puts time and effort into the pa-

tient to make sure they not only received good dental care, but that they were emotionally satisfied with the experience.” The family members of the veterans and the OVH employees began asking Dr. Sebastian if she could treat them also. Though she could not treat anyone other than the residents at the OVH, Dr. Sebastian decided that there was enough need that this was the right time for her to open her own practice. Dr. James Kilbury, who recently retired from his practice in Huron, had approached Dr. Sebastian in the past about taking over his small office. But, the timing had not been quite right, until now. Over the past few months, Dr. Sebastian and her crew have worked diligently to transform and update Dr. Kilbury’s former office. The office is small, but that is fine with Dr. Sebastian because she wants things to remain low-key. Also, she does not want to grow the practice too quickly or too much, such that she loses the personal connection with her patients. Dr. Sebastian stressed that “Dentistry is about understanding the need, opposed to selling them (the patient) what you want.” Dr. Sebastian is excited also to have an office in Hu-

ron where she and her family, husband, John Wise, and sons, Jacob and Aaron Wise, live. Opening her own office affords Dr. Sebastian the opportunity to once again treat patients of all ages. She especially looks forward to treating children again. Dr. Sebastian has worked with a wide range of people, including those with mental, physical, and emotional disabilities. Through her many years of dentistry, Dr. Sebastian has learned that “(Patients) like to see that you care. A Few Changes at H & R Block in Huron By Lisa Yako Without the general public even knowing it, some changes have been taking place at the H & R Block office in Huron. Dee Hartley, who opened the Huron office in 1971, has officially sold the business. But Dee is far from retired; she simply did not want to be concerned with running a business any longer. Currently, Dee can be found at her desk at the H & R Block office preparing tax returns anywhere from 40 to 60 hours per week. Dee plans to stay in this current position, in which she has the title of Master Tax Advisor, as long as possible. This past October, Dee officially sold the H & R Block franchise in Huron to long-time colleague, Betti Harmon. Betti has worked with H & R Block for the past 35 years, and she was very familiar with the Huron office. Betti’s former position with H & R Block was in management as a district director. When Betti, a resident of Vermilion, learned the Huron office was for sale, she jumped at the opportunity to transition into a new role. Both Dee and Betti are very experienced tax

professionals. They are both fun-loving ladies who really love preparing tax returns and truly enjoy discussing the topic. In addition to Dee and Betti, there are 11 other employees at the Huron office. Amazingly, the Huron H & R Block office prepares roughly 1,500 tax returns each year. In addition, they offer audit assistance and business services including payroll and bookkeeping. Though Betti recognizes that the Huron H & R Block offices runs smoothly, she does hope to extent their business services offerings and do a little remodeling. If you are in need of some help in preparing your taxes or want to take advantage of H & R Block’s Second Look Program, give the Huron office a call at 419-433-2083 or just stop by the office which is located at 519 South Main Street. The office’s current hours are 9 AM-9 PM Monday through Thursday, 9 AM-6 PM on Friday, and 9 AM-5 PM on Saturday. The tax professionals at H & R Block will be sure to guide you in the preparation of your tax return so you will not miss any credits or deductions to which you are entitled.

Dr. Amy Browne Awarded Board Certification

Norwalk physician Dr. Amy Browne has been awarded board certification in Family Practice and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) on the recommendation of the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, the Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Dr. Browne is in practice with Dr. James A. Gottfried, Dr. Rolland R. Rogers and Rebecca Beck, CNP at 257 Benedict Avenue, Bldg. C, Suite 1, Norwalk, OH. She is accepting new patients and takes all insurances. Dr. Browne is a member of Fisher-Titus Medical Center’s Medical Staff. Doctors of Osteopathy (DO) combine today’s medical technology with their ears to listen caringly to their patients, with their eyes to see their patients as whole persons, and with their hands to diagnose and treat patients for injury and illness. Osteopathic physicians understand how all the body’s systems are interconnected and how each one affects the others. They focus special attention on the musculoskeletal system, which reflects and influences the condition of all other body systems. When an osteopathic physician is “certified,” it means he or she has chosen to achieve expertise in a medical specialty or subspecialty by meeting the requirements of one (or more) of the AOA Specialty Certifying Boards.

Around Town Pied Piper to Open March 14 By Lisa Yako Despite the crazy weather and the lack of a true winter, one thing residents of Huron can always count on as a harbinger of spring is the opening of Pied Piper. The official opening for 2012 is only a few days away and preparations are underway! The Pied Piper has been a fixture in Huron since 1952 when it was opened by Ellsworth and Helen Piper. According to Sheila Ehrhardt, the Pipers operated the Dairy Bar, a fullservice restaurant that was located on Main Street in Huron. Ice cream was a big seller at the restaurant,

and the children often followed Mr. Piper over to the ice cream cooler in mass to make their selection. Hence, Mr. Piper was frequently compared to the legendary Pied Piper. Thus, the name, Pied Piper, seemed fitting for the Piper’s new ice cream stand which they built at the corner of Cleveland

Road and Huron Street. The Piper’s operated the Pied Piper for a few years before selling it to Carl Wechter. This was a fitting match since the Wechter family had long been in the dairy business. The Pied Piper has been in the Wechter family ever since. For the past approximately ten years, the Pied has been owned by Chris and Kelly Wechter. According to Chris Wechter, visitors to the Pied will not see any big changes this year, but all of the favorites will be back. So, if you are dreaming of a Nut Dip or a Turtle Sundae or even just a small cone with a face, you will not have long to wait!

Woodlands Kids Care Club Cares for Others The Woodlands Kids Care Club of the Volunteer Center of Erie County will be hosting a “Totes for Teens & Tots” Suitcase Drive this Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Woodlands Intermediate School, 1810 Maple Ave in Huron, between noon and 4:00 pm. The Club will be collecting gently used suitcases, backpacks, blankets, and personal items for Erie County Foster Children. “One of the best parts of being a part of the club is helping people who are not as fortunate,” explained 6th grader Club Member Erin Kleinhans. The Club has decided the “Totes for Teens & Tots” Suitcase Drive is a way of helping others.

Foster Care Children often times have very few personal belongings with no means of transporting them other than in a plastic bag. A suitcase can add value and meaning to a child’s life. Blankets often offer security and personal hygiene items are often left behind or have never been. The Woodlands Kids Care Club recognizes a need and has set a goal to help Erie County Foster Children who are less fortunate. Stop out Saturday with gently used suitcases, backpacks, blankets, or personal items and help the Woodlands Kids Care Club care for others!

Sports Tiger Men Fall in Sectional Finals This past week the boys basketball team started and finished their State playoff run at the Sandusky High School gymnasium. On the opening night, Huron struggled shooting from the field but still closed out a win against Genoa, 54-46. Jake Justus and Cody Thompson led the way with 20 and 12 points respectively in the winning cause. The young Tigers’ shooting woes continued in the sectional finals against Lake High School. Huron jumped out to a fast lead during the first few minutes of the game, but then went cold as ice shooting (even on lay-ups) for the next two and half quarters. Trailing 35-24 at the end three periods, Huron tried to rally in the final period, but fell short 51-46. Aaron Casey was the Tigers’ leading scorer with 14 points.

Traditional Irish Band Presents a Celtic Celebration Toast the Emerald Isle on St. Patrick’s Day with the exuberant General Guinness Band and Riverdance veteran dancer Joe Moriarty. This Celtic celebration, presented by the Firelands Symphony, begins at 8 p.m. March 17 at the Sandusky State Theatre. The General Guinness Band has a repertoire of emotive Irish ballads, energetic fiddle tunes and traditional airs on the Celtic harp, collected over a span of 30 years. True to its Irish heritage, the band relates tales of life and adventure through music, song and dance. The Kalamazoo Gazette recently reviewed, “In their own way (the General Guinness Band) are lords of the dance – without glitz, fog machines and canned music.” Lead vocalist James O’Shea, a native of Killkenny, Ireland, brings a fresh passion and joy to the poetry, wit and inspiration that have characterized Irish songs for generations. Providing backup vocals and a wall of instrumental music are: Larry Dulin (Irish flute and tin whistles); Steve Steele (guitar and Irish bouzouiki); Carol Methneny (fiddle); Sheree Green (fiddle); Tom Davis (Bodhran and banjo); and Judy Davis (step dancing). The band weaves lively ballads with fiddle tunes and step dancing to provide a quick paced program with visual as well as aural interest. Solid vocals, intricate step dancing, and riveting instrumentals will keep toes tapping. Joe Moriarty teams up with the band after more than 14 years with Riverdance, which brought Irish step dancing to the world stage in 1994. A native of Columbus, Ohio, and award-winning traditional Irish dancer, Moriarty left high school as a sophomore and joined Riverdance at the age of 16. A year later, he became the youngest principal male dancer in the history of the troupe. He has performed on Broadway, in the Peoples Hall of China, and before the Empress of Japan and the president of Ireland. To order tickets, call the Sandusky State Theatre box office at 419-626-1950 or 1-877626-1950 or access the symphony’s secure website at www.sanduskystate.com. Tickets are $26 for adults, $24 for seniors and $10 for students. A 30-minute “Conversation with the Conductor and Guest Artists” begins one hour before the performance.
