Six groups of deserving citizens were honored at the Huron Chamber of Commerce’s “Celebrate Huron” gala on Saturday, March 10 at Mesenburg’s Plaza Place. Chamber president Bruce Miller, director Sheila Ehrhardt and Rotary president Christine Crawford introduced the honorees. The event was opened to the public in effort to once again create an annual recognition night for all Huron residents, not just Chamber members. Guests vied for prize-filled balloons, an opportunity to beat the dealers in a live gaming event, numerous raffle and door prizes. Honorees included: The Solberg Family, Ralph Pisano, The Christmas Ladies, Rev. Tom Holzaepfel, and Derrick Chennault. Huron Lagoons Marina, a third-generation family enterprise for the Solbergs is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It was named “Business of the Year.” The Huron Rotary Club and the Chamber teamed up to honor Ralph Pisano, the senior
living members of each organization. The former Huron Municipal Court judge has been practicing law in the community since 1951. In 2008 a trio of local women decided that downtown Huron could using some sprucing up at Christmastime and set about initiating an innovative “Adopt a Lamppost” drive. Sandy Otterman, Beth Fisher and Julie Sowecke, with the help of Huron Street Department crews, decorate downtown lampposts with fresh greenery and red velvet bows. Thanks to generous donations, they have plans to illuminate the greenery next year. The recipient of the “Star Award 2012” was the Rev. Tom Holzaepfel, a person who has dedicated his life to helping others. As pastor of Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, he has a full-time position shepherding his flock. But her also reaches out to needy people of the area, running a food pantry at the Huron church, as well as the local unit of the Salvation Army. The Community Beautification Award went
to a business owner who has lovingly spruced up what was already a Huron landmark. From the stately white rocking chairs on the front porch, to the hand-carved wooded brown bears that can be found around the property, Derrick Chennault has made the large red building at the corner of Cleveland Road and Huron Street, once again the landmark it was when known as Wileswood Country Store. His business, Eastwood Environmental, and the Huron Chamber, have offices there. Past Chamber president Doug Studer presented the “Unsung Hero Award” to Huron City Schools Superintendent Fred Fox. A Huron native, he chose to return to the helm of the local schools “because of his love of our community,” said Studer. “One way or another, we and all our children, have been touched by Fred’s dedication to Huron.” Committee members planning the event included: Jacquie Clark, Christine Crawford, Sandy Foster, Sharon Miller and Doug Studer.

terest, taxes, charitable contributions, casualty losses and miscellaneous deductions is more than your standard deduction, you can usually benefit by itemizing. 2. Standard deduction amounts -Your standard deduction is based on your filing status and is subject to inflation adjustments each year. For 2011, the amounts are: Single $5,800 Married Filing Jointly $11,600 Head of Household $8,500 Married Filing Separately $5,800 Qualifying Widow(er) $11,600 3. Some taxpayers have different standard deductions - The standard deduction amount depends on your filing status, whether you are 65 or older or blind and whether another taxpayer can claim an exemption for you. If any of these apply, use the Standard Deduction Worksheet on the back of Form 1040EZ, or in the 1040A or 1040 instructions. 4. Limited itemized deductions - Your itemized deductions are no longer limited because of your adjusted gross income.
5. Married filing separately - When a married couple files separate returns and one spouse itemizes deductions, the other spouse cannot claim the standard deduction and therefore must itemize to claim their allowable deductions. 6. Some taxpayers are not eligible for the standard deduction - They include nonresident aliens, dual-status aliens and individuals who file returns for periods of less than 12 months due to a change in accounting periods. 7. Forms to use - The standard deduction can be taken on Forms 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ. To itemize your deductions, use Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, and Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. I would like to help you with more information on all of these points but time and space don’t allow me to do that. Schools “Reading is Seussational”! ‘Reading is “Seussational”!’ That is what the students of Shawnee Elementary School are saying after the weeklong celebration of “Right to Read” week. The ‘Reading is “Seussational”’ theme was to tribute the legendary Dr. Seuss. Celebrating what would have been his 108th birthday on March 2, Theodor Geisel, aka, Dr. Seuss had published and illustrated a total of 44 best-selling children’s books filled with nonsense words and peculiar characters and places prior to his death in September of 1991. The Shawnee students honored Dr. Seuss throughout the week in many fun, yet creative ways. Kicking off the event student’s adorning “Crazy Hats” took the Reader’s Oath on Monday to promise to read a little extra each day of the week. Some very “Mix Match” Socks filled the hallways on Tuesday followed by “Pajama Bottom” Day on Wednesday. “Green Eggs & Ham” one of Dr. Seuss’s famous books was the menu choice at Shawnee on Wednesday. Thursday the students wore one of Dr. Seuss’s favorites, stripes, while they enjoyed “Cat in the Hat” cupcakes provided by Sue Whitaker and the Food Service Staff. Friday was “Wear
your Favorite Color Day”. Every day a different book was chosen to be the “Book of the Day”. “Dr. Seuss had used his imagination to create so many wonderful children’s stories. Reading is both important and fun.” This was the message Jim Kleefeld of Avon shared with the students during “The Cat and A Hat and Green Eggs and Ham” program on Thursday afternoon. Kleefled presented several routines which involved students in a variety of Dr. Seuss books. Each routine centered on a specific book and demonstrated through magic and creativity the life lessons the author portrayed in the stories. Kleefled’s background consists of a combination of a Theatrical Arts and Early Childhood Education. His energy level and enthusiasm held the young audience captive for the forty-five minute magic program. The Jim Kleefled program was brought to Shawnee by the Huron PTO. Crazy hats, mix-match socks, pajamas, stripes, whatever nonsense it takes….”reading is both important and fun”.
. . . but does Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs like EHOVE? Mike Rowe, best known for his filthy adventures as the host of Discovery Channel’s Emmy®nominated Dirty Jobs, knows what works. He’s a regular guy. Likeable, relatable and somewhat skilled when it comes to manual labor. He knows what it’s like to work, but also to work hard, and feel the satisfaction of that at the end day. Rowe has taken a public stand to shine a light on the widening skills gap in America’s workforce and the importance of career tech education, the type of education offered at EHOVE, formerly known as vocational education. Earlier this year, he spoke to the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee about the need for change in America’s workforce to promote
The Cat in the Hat made a grand appearance on Thursday, March 8, 2012 as the Shawnee students celebrated Dr. Seuss’ Birthday.
skilled trades as desirable jobs. Rowe’s compelling, convincing and sometimes humorous message can be seen in a video at www.mikeroweworks.com. EHOVE Career Center appreciates Rowe’s willingness to stand up and speak about the importance and relevance of career tech education, and recently released information about Rowe’s testimony, charitable foundation and other efforts. EHOVE tweeted the article and a thanks to Mike Rowe, then discovered the article had been published on the official Mike Rowe website. Subsequent Facebook posts and tweets by EHOVE suggesting that Rowe should visit EHOVE have gone unanswered. EHOVE students relate well to Rowe and his dirty jobs. Yet, EHOVE students are left wondering whether or not Mike Rowe may someday make an appearance at EHOVE. At least they don’t bite, unlike the Lake Erie water snakes Rowe encountered during one Dirty Jobs stint at Put-in-Bay.

596 Items Donated and Looking to Continue to Help Others Just less than 600 items were collected on Saturday during the Totes for Teens & Tots drive put on by the Woodlands Kids Care Club. Two van loads of suitcases and backpacks along with blankets, diapers and other personal items were taken to Erie County Family & Children Services to help children during difficult times. Ten students from a sturdy club of about 50 regulars spent their Saturday afternoon collecting the items from generous community members who stopped by with donations. Donors of all ages stopped with suitcases, blankets, toys and personal items. “This was very exciting! The kids were having a blast! It was a huge success!” stated Lisa Pinkerton, Woodlands Kids Care Club Coordinator. Third grade student, Jayden Lacrosse, describes the club as a fun way to help others. To her it is a good feeling to know she is helping other children who are less fortunate. Jayden’s
favorite part of the Club is being a part of a group that is making a difference and helping others. Sixth grade student, Erin Kleinhans, remembered making cards for the service men and women and making the little flower pot children were two of her favorite projects so far this year. The little flower pot people was a project the club completed earlier in the year and was a reminder to the community there are foster children in our county that need assistance. Keaton Balduff, 6th grade, also enjoyed making cards for the service men and women. Another one of his favorite projects this year was making holiday posters for the homeless people. The Woodlands Kids Care Club is always looking for needs to be filled within the community. The students are dedicated to the projects and helping others. They are amazing listeners and are learning how it feels good to
do something good for others, stated Pinkerton. Now that the Totes for Teens & Tots Drive is complete for this year the Woodlands Kids Care Club is beginning to focus on their next big project. The students have decided to perform a Talent Show for the residences of Admiral’s Point Nursing Home. The residences that are able to travel to the school will do so late April for an afternoon of performing arts from Woodlands finest talent pool. Certainly there will be many smiles exchanged. There are 33 Kids Care Clubs in Erie County involving over 700 students county-wide in the Volunteer Center of Erie County. The Woodlands Kids Care Club is the largest Club in Erie County, explained Brandy Bennett, Youth Coordinator from The Volunteer Center. The Woodland’s Club Generous donors of all ages stopped by to meets once a month to decide where drop off donations of blankets, toys, suitcases the greatest needs are in the commu- and personal items. nity at the time.

EHOVE students are college bound and career ready Coming back to school after Winter Break is tough, but this year, students came back to something new, Career Readiness Week. This week of workshops was designed to give all students the opportunity to enhance the skills they need to be career-ready and college-bound. Students participated in workshops to learn about job-seeking, interview prep, group interviews, and college and scholarship applications. Juniors created the main components of their resumés and career portfolios, while Seniors updated, refined and organized theirs. Open sessions were also offered to help students who needed some additional assistance in any area. EHOVE’s Career Portfolios are digital and physical items that document students’ experience, skills, achievements and grades. Typically included are: resumes, reference letters, awards, work samples, certifications, liGOLDEN censes and projects. “I felt I was prepared with my resumé and everything else, but it was still good for me because now I’m sure. For anyone who didn’t have
their resumé ready, it was just what they needed,” said Health Careers student Alyssa Golden (Bellevue HS). “I thought it was very informational. The group interviews were really helpful to me. I was HURST surprised to find out what employers can’t ask you in an interview. I liked the college part too. I thinking of looking into college too,” said Cosmetology student Samantha Hurst (Norwalk HS). “They helped me zero in on what I need to complete with my resumé and portfolio. I also got a better idea of what it’ll be like when I go to get an actual job after high school. RYERSON It was helpful because now I know what to expect at interviews,” said Auto Body student Brandon Ryerson, (South Central HS).
