EHOVE Instructor Honored EHOVE Criminal Justice instructor Tom Dunlap was awarded the Excellence in Law Enforcement Award at the Sheriff ’s Award Banquet in Huron County. Dunlap received the award for his service in law enforcement and in educating young men and women for 20 years in the career field. A former Huron County Sheriff, he will be retiring from his long-held position instructing at EHOVE. “It was an honor and a privilege to be given this award by Sheriff Dane Howard and his Command Staff,” said Dunlap. “It was made even better having my Command Staff on hand to see me receive this award. Cadet Chief Kaitlin Rucker and Cadet Captain Matt Scheerer have been instrumental in making my last year at EHOVE enjoyable.”

Can’t File By April 17?

Firelands Historical Society members and friends will hear Fire Chief Shawn Dickerson tell the “History of Norwalk Fire Department” at a meeting on Wednesday, April 18. It will be held at 7 p.m. at the Research Center at 9 Case Ave., Norwalk.

Dickerson became Chief in June of 2011.

He has researched his subject through 80 years of records at the station and other sources of information on Norwalk’s early history. He is a Coast Guard veteran and received his training at the Ohio Fire Academy in Columbus. The meeting is free and open to the public.

As the April 17th deadline (yes, we have 2 extra days to file this year) some taxpayers may find themselves unable to complete their return or pay their taxes just yet. Below is some information from the IRS about extensions.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today reminded taxpayers that quick and easy solutions are available if they can’t file their returns or pay their taxes on time.

The IRS says don’t panic. Tax-filing extensions are available to taxpayers who need more time to finish their returns. Remember, this is an extension of time to file; not an extension of time

to pay. However, taxpayers who are having trouble paying what they owe usually qualify for payment plans and other relief. Last month, for example, the IRS, as part of its Fresh Start initiative announced penalty relief for unemployed taxpayers and selfemployed individuals whose income has dropped.

Either way, taxpayers will avoid stiff penalties if they file either a regular income tax return or a request for a tax-filing extension by this year’s April 17 deadline. Taxpayers should file, even if they can’t pay the full amount due. Filing this form gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file a return.

By properly filing this form, a taxpayer will avoid the late-filing penalty, normally five percent per month based on the unpaid balance, that applies to returns filed after the deadline. In addition, any payment made with an extension request will reduce or eliminate interest and late-payment penalties that apply to payments made after April 17. The current interest rate is 3% per year, compounded daily, and the late-payment penalty is normally 0.5 percent per month.

By Lisa Yako On a recent trip to the grocery store, I was in need of real maple syrup for our typical Saturday morning breakfast of pancakes or waffles. Being the perpetual bargain hunter, I was quickly drawn to a jug of syrup that was on sale and markedly cheaper than the brand next to it. The front of this particular jug of syrup had the claim “All Natural Syrup”. Though impressed by the words “all natural”, the price, and the fact that it was packaged like real maple syrup, I proceeded to look at the ingredient list. I was dismayed to read that the “All Natural Syrup” resembled neither real maple syrup, nor anything natural. The ingredients listed were as follows: syrup (brown rice, sugar, maple [4%]), water, natural flavor, Xanthan gum (natural thickener), and citric acid. On a positive note, the producer of this syrup had previously stopped using high fructose corn syrup in lieu of sugar and eliminated caramel color.

In my opinion, the word “natural” holds no true meaning in this instance and is often used flippantly on food labels. Technically, the claim of “natural” is true on this product because there are no artificial ingredients used, but this concoction is definitely not something found in nature! tative, Peter Welch, took issue with the fact that the syrup described above was masquerading as true maple syrup and suggested that it should be shelved separately from the true maple syrup products.

So, what is a consumer to do? I suggest that you question terms such as “natural”, “sugar-free”, or even “fat-free”. If in doubt, read the ingredient list thoroughly. If there is an ingredient listed that you do not recognize and cannot pronounce, then the label’s claim of “all natural” is likely a stretch. Calorielab.com offers the following information: “According to the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates most food label claims, ‘natural’ means a product does not contain artificial ingredients. For meat and poultry, which are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a ‘natural’ food label means that the product was minimally processed without adding artificial ingredients, such as flavors, colors and preservatives.” Further, do not be deceived by the misconception that “natural” means healthy. Many ingredients, such as butter, are definitely natural, but are far from healthy. In the end, the claim of “natural” on a product might suggest that the product is somewhat better than another, similar product, but you should understand that the claim is ambiguous at best.

Like a book’s cover, the fancy label and packaging do not a healthy product make.

Goodwill Earns Award The Erie County Board of Developmental Disabilities named Goodwill Industries of Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky Counties as the 2011 “Provider of the Year” for Erie County. “As we celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month this March, we are excited to honor Goodwill as the Erie County Provider of the Year. We rely on provider agencies to assist us in our mission and want to recognize Goodwill for exceptional service to individuals with developmental disabilities,” said Lisa Guliano, Superintendent, Erie County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Goodwill provides jobs and job training to area residents with developmental disabilities and other employment challenges.

Funding for Goodwill job programs is derived from the sale of donated clothing, furniture and housewares in Goodwill retail stores, as well as recycling programs and contract services for area businesses.

dusky Goodwill facility, was also named “Direct Care Professional of the Year” by the Erie County Board of Developmental Disabilities. “Libby is compassionate, friendly, neat, organized and professional.

She is willing to meet individuals outside the normal settings in order to assist them.

She is patient and a creative problem solver when implementing skill developments and services,” said Guliano.

“I am humbled by this award,” said Boros, “but the true reward is knowing that in some small way I can have a positive impact on someone’s life.”

Mary Strayer Master Gardener Many questions have come to me about young newly planted trees leaves yellowing and falling off. First of all the most common reason for yellowing leaves on a young newly planted tree is excess heat, then excess water, and perhaps late frosts.

If your gardens are stressed now, this could be the problem. Many of the trees tried to bud out way early this spring, and now, are coming back about 3 weeks late. Our wisteria vine did this as well, and it should be blooming shortly, but instead it is just pushing out the first sign of green. All plants need the right growing temperatures, and when nature changes things, sometimes they really suffer.

We planted 6 new apple trees this year, and remembered to plant a plastic tile horizontally beside each tree. This way we could water right to the root of the tree without wasting so much water with run off, and hoping that the water went to the roots of the tree where it was needed the most. Remember this tip when planting trees in the future. You may remove the tile in 2-3 years, and feel certain the roots of the tree are established enough to continue on.

As you see, the all plants simply need enough time for their roots to establish themselves before the weather changes. The natural reaction of the tree is to drop some of its foliage. The only thing that you can do is to make sure the young plants have enough soil moisture at the right times.

Every year is different; this year the apricots set on the tree, but the raspberries are slower in coming. This is why gardening is such an adventure. Have fun with it, and go with the flow.

This year Safety Town will take place from June 11-21 (Mondays-Thursdays) at Shawnee Elementary School.

Thursday, June 21st is Graduation Day… students and parents attend for a Graduation Ceremony/Party! The registration fee is $35 for Residents and $40 for Non-Residents, the deadline for registration is May 18, 2012. Safety Town Registration Forms are available on our website or at the office.

How do I become a Safety Town Counselor?

Safety Town Counselors are one of the most important parts in running a successful program. Each year we have between 40-50 counselors who donate their time daily.

The typical age of a Safety Town counselor is between 6th and 9th grades. We do have some older, experienced Safety Town counselors who are in 10th, 11th and 12th grade.

Safety Town Counselors must have completed 6th grade before Safety Town begins.

These counselors are vital in the day-to-day operations of Safety Town. Each counselor is assigned to a classroom or help on the blacktop outside.

More importantly, a Safety Town Counselor is responsible for bringing excitement and energy to the participants.

Many children in Safety Town are nervous the first day and it is the role of the counselor to make sure they feel comfortable. Most importantly, they make sure the kids are safe and have fun.

Safety Town is a great way to help your community and gain Community Service Hours toward your Diploma of Distinction. You must bring the required paperwork from your high school guidance counselor to the counselor meeting prior to the start of Safety Town. Forms will be completed after completion of Safety Town and you will be contacted to pick up these forms when ready.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, you will need to complete and return a “New Counselor Application Packet” which can be found on our website or pick one up from the office. The deadline for submitting an application is Friday, April 13th, 2012.

Bargains for Baby Sale Saturday, May 12th

The first garage sale of the season! This sale is limited to infant & toddler items only. Clean out your closets and basements and get ready to sell those gently used baby items!!

The sale will take place on Saturday, May 12th at the Huron Boat Basin parking lot from 9am-1pm. $8 per space (spaces approx 9 x19-parking space size). Pre-Registration is required to participate. Registration forms are available on the website or at our office. This event is held rain or shine.

City Wide Clean Up:

Saturday, April 21st 9:00am-12:00 at the Huron Boat Basin Come out and help make Huron, “A Great Lake Place” by volunteering to help clean-up our city! Gloves and trash bags will be provided when you check-in and receive your assignment. Hot dogs and drinks will be provided after the clean up.

Lady Tigers Roll to First Win

Five innings later, when the dust had settled, the Lady Tigers walked away with a 32-0 shutout. Maddie Orzech led the onslaught by going 3 for 4, driving in 6 RBI’s as well as scoring two runs. SS Amanda

Vacca went 1 - 1 but gathered 6 walks and scored times. Others with multiple hits included Morgan Asberry and Megan Popke.

Popke picked up her first win of the season throwing 8K’s in three innings of shutout

work. Freshman Kiersten Hammond then came in to complete the one hitter by contributing five more strikeouts of her own.

As a team, the Tigers played an error free game on defense.
